1. Simulating Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors: A Technology-Independent Approach Using Generic Doping Profiles

Abstract: The optimisation of the sensitive region of CMOS sensors with complex non-uniform electric fields requires precise simulations, and this can be achieved by a combination of electrostatic field simulations and Monte Carlo methods. This paper presents the guiding principles of such simulations, using a CMOS pixel sensor with a small collection electrode and a high-resistivity epitaxial layer as an example. The full simulation workflow is described, along with possible pitfalls and how to avoid them. For commercial CMOS processes, detailed doping profiles are confidential, but the presented method provides an optimisation tool that is sufficiently accurate to investigate sensor behaviour and trade-offs of different sensor designs without knowledge of proprietary information. The workflow starts with detailed electric field finite element method simulations in TCAD, using generic doping profiles. Examples of the effect of varying different parameters of the simulated sensor are shown, as well as the creation of weighting fields, and transient pulse simulations. The fields resulting from TCAD simulations can be imported into the Allpix Squared Monte Carlo simulation framework, which enables high-statistics simulations, including modelling of stochastic fluctuations from the underlying physics processes of particle interaction. Example Monte Carlo simulation setups are presented and the different parts of a simulation chain are described. Simulation studies from small collection electrode CMOS sensors are presented, and example results are shown for both single sensors and multiple sensors in a test beam telescope configuration. The studies shown are those typically performed on sensor prototypes in test beam campaigns, and a comparison is made to test beam data, showing a maximum deviation of 4% and demonstrating that the approach is viable for generating realistic results., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures, submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A

Abstract: Monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) produced in a 65 nm CMOS imaging technology are being investigated for applications in particle physics. The MAPS design has a small collection electrode characterized by an input capacitance of ~fF, granting a high signal-to-noise ratio and low power consumption. Additionally, the 65 nm CMOS imaging technology brings a reduction in material budget and improved logic density of the readout circuitry, compared to previously studied technologies. Given these features, this technology was chosen by the TANGERINE project to develop the next generation of silicon pixel sensors. The sensor design targets temporal and spatial resolutions compatible with the requirements for a vertex detector at future lepton colliders. Simulations and test-beam characterization of technology demonstrators have been carried out in close collaboration with the CERN EP R&D program and the ALICE ITS3 upgrade. TCAD device simulations using generic doping profiles and Monte Carlo simulations have been used to build an understanding of the technology and predict the performance parameters of the sensor. Technology demonstrators of a 65 nm CMOS MAPS with a small collection electrode have been characterized in laboratory and test-beam facilities by studying performance parameters such as cluster size, charge collection, and efficiency. This work compares simulation results to test-beam data. 3. Test-beam Performance Results of the FASTPIX Sub-Nanosecond CMOS Pixel Sensor Demonstrator

Abstract: Within the ATTRACT FASTPIX project, a monolithic pixel sensor demonstrator chip has been developed in a modified 180 nm CMOS imaging process technology, targeting sub-nanosecond timing precision for single ionising particles. It features a small collection electrode design on a 25 micrometers-thick epitaxial layer and contains 32 mini matrices of 68 hexagonal pixels each, with pixel pitches ranging from 8.66 to 20 micrometers. Four pixels are transmitting an analog output signal and 64 are transmitting binary hit information. Various design variations are explored, aiming at accelerating the charge collection and making the timing of the charge collection more uniform over the pixel area. Signal treatment of the analog waveforms, as well as reconstruction of digital position, time and charge information, is carried out off-chip. This contribution introduces the design of the sensor and readout system and presents performance results for various pixel designs achieved in recent test beam measurements with external tracking and timing reference detectors. Abstract: Monolithic CMOS sensors in a 65 nm imaging technology are being investigated by the CERN EP Strategic R&D Programme on Technologies for Future Experiments for an application in particle physics. The appeal of monolithic detectors lies in the fact that both sensor volume and readout electronics are integrated in the same silicon wafer, providing a reduction in production effort, costs and scattering material. The Tangerine Project WP1 at DESY participates in the Strategic R&D Programme and is focused on the development of a monolithic active pixel sensor with a time and spatial resolution compatible with the requirements for a future lepton collider vertex detector. By fulfilling these requirements, the Tangerine detector is suitable as well to be used as telescope planes for the DESY-II Test Beam facility. The project comprises all aspects of sensor development, from the electronics engineering and the sensor design using simulations, to laboratory and test beam investigations of prototypes. Generic TCAD Device and Monte-Carlo simulations are used to establish an understanding of the technology and provide important insight into performance parameters of the sensor. Testing prototypes in laboratory and test beam facilities allows for the characterization of their response to different conditions. By combining results from all these studies it is possible to optimize the sensor layout. 5. Development of novel single-die hybridisation processes for small-pitch pixel detectors

Abstract: Hybrid pixel detectors require a reliable and cost-effective interconnect technology adapted to the pitch and die sizes of the respective applications. During the ASIC and sensor R\&D phase, especially for small-scale applications, such interconnect technologies need to be suitable for the assembly of single dies, typically available from Multi-Project-Wafer submissions. Within the CERN EP R&D programme and the AIDAinnova collaboration, innovative hybridisation concepts targeting vertex-detector applications at future colliders are under development. Recent results of two novel interconnect methods for pixel pitches of 25um and 55um are presented in this contribution -- an industrial fine-pitch SnAg solder bump-bonding process adapted to single-die processing using support wafers, as well as a newly developed in-house single-die interconnection process based on ACF. The fine-pitch bump-bonding process is qualified with hybrid assemblies from a recent bonding campaign at Frauenhofer IZM. Individual CLICpix2 ASICs with 25um pixel pitch were bump-bonded to active-edge silicon sensors with thicknesses ranging from 50um to 130um. The device characterisation was conducted in the laboratory as well as during a beam test campaign at the CERN SPS beam-line, demonstrating an interconnect yield of about 99.7%. The ACF interconnect technology replaces the solder bumps by conductive micro-particles embedded in an epoxy film. The electro-mechanical connection between the sensor and ASIC is achieved via thermocompression of the ACF using a flip-chip device bonder. The required pixel pad topology is achieved with an in-house ENIG plating process. This newly developed ACF hybridisation process is first qualified with the Timepix3 ASICs and sensors with 55um pixel pitch. Abstract: Small collection-electrode monolithic CMOS sensors profit from a high signal-to-noise ratio and a small power consumption, but have a limited active sensor volume due to the fabrication process based on thin high-resistivity epitaxial layers. In this paper, the active sensor depth is investigated in the monolithic small collection-electrode technology demonstrator CLICTD. Charged particle beams are used to study the charge-collection properties and the performance of devices with different thicknesses both for perpendicular and inclined particle incidence. In CMOS sensors with a high-resistivity Czochralski substrate, the depth of the sensitive volume is found to increase by a factor two in comparison with standard epitaxial material and leads to significant improvements in the hit-detection efficiency and the spatial and time resolution.

8. Comparison of Supervised and Unsupervised Anomaly Detection in Belle II Pixel Detector Data

Abstract: Machine learning has become a popular instrument for the identification of dark matter candidates at particle collider experiments. They enable the processing of large datasets and are therefore suitable to operate directly on raw data coming from the detector, instead of reconstructed objects. Here, we investigate patterns of raw pixel hits recorded by the Belle II pixel detector, that is operational since 2019 and presently features 4 M pixels and trigger rates up to 5 kHz. In particular, we focus on unsupervised techniques that operate without the need for a theoretical model. These model-agnostic approaches allow for an unbiased exploration of data, while filtering out anomalous detector signatures that could hint at new physics scenarios. We present the identification of hypothetical magnetic monopoles against Belle II beam background using Self-Organizing Kohonen Maps and Autoencoders. The two unsupervised algorithms are compared to a convolutional Multilayer Perceptron and a superior signal efficiency is found at high background rejection levels. Our results strengthen the case for using unsupervised machine learning techniques to complement traditional search strategies at particle colliders and pave the way to potential online applications of the algorithms in the near future.

Abstract: An ever-increasing demand for high-performance silicon sensors requires complex sensor designs that are challenging to simulate and model. The combination of electrostatic finite element simulations with a transient Monte Carlo approach provides simultaneous access to precise sensor modelling and high statistics. The high simulation statistics enable the inclusion of Landau fluctuations and production of secondary particles, which offers a realistic simulation scenario. The transient simulation approach is an important tool to achieve an accurate time-resolved description of the sensor, which is crucial in the face of novel detector prototypes with increasingly precise timing capabilities. The simulated time resolution as a function of operating parameters as well as the full transient pulse can be monitored and assessed, which offers a new perspective on the optimisation and characterisation of silicon sensors. In this paper, a combination of electrostatic finite-element simulations using 3D TCAD and transient Monte Carlo simulations with the Allpix Squared framework are presented for a monolithic CMOS pixel sensor with a small collection diode, that is characterised by a highly inhomogeneous, complex electric field. The results are compared to transient 3D TCAD simulations that offer a precise simulation of the transient behaviour but long computation times. Additionally, the simulations are benchmarked against test-beam data and good agreement is found for the performance parameters over a wide range of different operation conditions.

10. Test-beam and simulation studies for the CLICTD technology demonstrator -- a monolithic CMOS pixel sensor with a small collection diode

Abstract: The CLIC Tracker Detector (CLICTD) is a monolithic pixel sensor featuring pixels of 30um x 37.5um and a small collection diode. The sensor is fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS imaging process, using two different pixel flavours: the first with a continuous n-type implant for full lateral depletion, and the second with a segmentation in the n-type implant for accelerated charge collection. Moreover, CLICTD features an innovative sub-pixel segmentation scheme that allows the digital footprint to be reduced while maintaining a small sub-pixel pitch. In this contribution, test-beam measurements for the pixel flavour with the segmented n-implant are presented. The performance is evaluated in terms of time and spatial resolution as well as efficiency. Furthermore, the test-beam data is compared to simulation studies using a combination of 3D TCAD and Monte Carlo simulation tools.

Abstract: Corryvreckan is a versatile, highly configurable software with a modular structure designed to reconstruct and analyse test beam and laboratory data. It caters to the needs of the test beam community by providing a flexible offline event building facility to combine detectors with different read-out schemes, with or without trigger information, and includes the possibility to correlate data from multiple devices based on timestamps. Hit timing information, available with high precision from an increasing number of detectors, can be used in clustering and tracking to reduce combinatorics. Several algorithms, including an implementation of Millepede-II, are provided for offline alignment. A graphical user interface enables direct monitoring of the reconstruction progress and can be employed for quasi-online monitoring during data taking. This work introduces the Corryvreckan framework architecture and user interface, and provides a detailed overview of the event building algorithm. The reconstruction and analysis capabilities are demonstrated with data recorded at the DESY II Test Beam Facility using the EUDAQ2 data acquisition framework with an EUDET-type beam telescope, a Timepix3 timing reference, a fine-pitch planar silicon sensor with CLICpix2 readout and the AIDA Trigger Logic Unit. The individual steps of the reconstruction chain are presented in detail.

12. The CLICTD Monolithic CMOS Sensor

Abstract: CLICTD is a monolithic silicon pixel sensor fabricated in a modified 180 nm CMOS imaging process with a small collection electrode design and a high-resistivity epitaxial layer. It features an innovative sub-pixel segmentation scheme and is optimised for fast charge collection and high spatial resolution. The sensor was developed to target the requirements for the tracking detector of the proposed future Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). Most notably, a temporal resolution of a few nanoseconds and a spatial resolution below 7 microns are demanded. In this contribution, the sensor performance measured in beam tests is presented with emphasis on recent studies using assemblies with different thicknesses (down to 50 microns to minimize the material budget) and inclined particle tracks.

13. Silicon vertex and tracking detector R&D for CLIC

Abstract: The physics aims at the proposed future high-energy linear $e^+e^-$ collider CLIC pose challenging demands on the performance of the detector system. In particular, the vertex and tracking detectors have to combine a spatial resolution of a few micrometres and a low material budget with a time-stamping accuracy of a few nanoseconds. For the vertex detector, fine-pitch sensors, dedicated 65nm readout ASICs, fine-pitch bonding techniques using solder bumps or anisotropic conductive films as well as monolithic devices based on Silicon-On-Insulator technology are explored. Fully monolithic CMOS sensors with large and small collection electrodes are under investigation for the large surface CLIC tracker. This contribution gives an overview of the CLIC vertex and tracking detector R&D, focusing on recent results from test-beam campaigns and simulation-based sensor optimisation studies.

Abstract: Combining electrostatic field simulations with Monte Carlo methods enables realistic modeling of the detector response for novel monolithic silicon detectors with strongly non-linear electric fields. Both the precise field description and the inclusion of Landau fluctuations and production of secondary particles in the sensor are crucial ingredients for the understanding and reproduction of detector characteristics. In this paper, a CMOS pixel sensor with small collection electrode design, implemented in a high-resistivity epitaxial layer, is simulated by integrating a detailed electric field model from finite element TCAD into a Monte Carlo based simulation with the Allpix$^2$ framework. The simulation results are compared to data recorded in test-beam measurements and very good agreement is found for various quantities such as cluster size, spatial resolution and efficiency. Furthermore, the observables are studied as a function of the intra-pixel incidence position to enable a detailed comparison with the detector behavior observed in data. The validation of such simulations is fundamental for modeling the detector response and for predicting the performance of future prototype designs. 15. Search for Highly Ionizing Particles with the Pixel Detector at Belle II

Abstract: The Belle II experiment, located at the SuperKEKB collider at the high-energy research facility KEK in Tsukuba, Japan, started operation in 2018. Compared to the predecessor experiment Belle, Belle II plans to increase the peak luminosity by a factor of about 40, by employing nano-beam technology in the interaction region. In particular the new, innermost sub-detector of Belle II - the Pixel Vertex Detector (PXD) - is in close proximity to the interaction point. This allows for the detection of particles, which do not leave a signal in the outer sub-detectors. Among these, Highly Ionizing Particles (HIPs) encounter a characteristically high energy loss, limiting their penetration depth into the detector. Anti-deuterons and magnetic monopoles as possible HIPs are considered. Without a signal in the outer sub-detectors, no track trigger is issued, resulting in possible information loss. Abstract: we have conceived an extension of the R&D programme covering the period 2024 to 2028, i.e. again a 5-year period, however with 2024 as overlap year. This step was encouraged by the success of the current programme but also by the Europe-wide efforts to launch new Detector R&D collaborations in the framework of the ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap. We propose to continue our R&D programme with the main activities in essentially the same areas. All activities are fully aligned with the ECFA Roadmap and in most cases will be carried out under the umbrella of one of the new DRD collaborations. The program is a mix of natural continuations of the current activities and a couple of very innovative new developments, such as a radiation hard embedded FPGA implemented in an ASIC based on System-on-Chip technology. A special and urgent topic is the fabrication of Al-reinforced super-conducting cables. Such cables are a core ingredient of any new superconducting magnet such as BabyIAXO, PANDA, EIC, ALICE-3 etc. Production volumes are small and demands come in irregular intervals. Industry (world-wide) is no longer able and willing to fabricate such cables. The most effective approach (technically and financially) may be to re-invent the process at CERN, together with interested partners, and offer this service to the community.

22. Silicon pixel-detector R&D for future lepton colliders

Abstract: The physics aims at future lepton colliders such as CLIC or FCC-ee pose challenging demands on the performance of the proposed all-silicon vertex and tracking-detector systems. A single-plane spatial resolution of a few micrometers is needed, combined with a low mass of ~0.2% X0 per layer for the vertex detectors and ~1% X0 per layer for the main trackers. Moreover, hit-time tagging with a few nanosecond resolution is required for CLIC, to reduce the impact of beam-induced background on the measurement accuracy to an acceptable level. An even better timing precision below 100 ps on pixel level would improve the background rejection further, and opens up the possibility of particle-identification by time of flight measurements within the tracking layers. To address these detector requirements, a broad R&D program on new silicon detector technologies is being pursued within various collaborative frameworks, such as the CERN EP R&D programme, AIDAinnova and the CLICdp collaboration. Different small pitch (25 micron) hybrid technologies with innovative sensor concepts are explored as candidates for the inner vertex-detector layers. A dedicated 65 nm readout chip (CLICpix2) has been developed and interconnected via fine pitch bump-bonding to 50-150 micron thin planar active-edge sensors. Furthermore, alternative interconnects such as bonding using anisotropic conductive films (ACF) are explored. Fully monolithic CMOS technologies are considered both for the vertex and the tracking detectors. Based on 3D TCAD simulations and previous test results, innovative concepts for CMOS sensors with a small collection electrode have been developed, targeting various future projects. Several prototype chips have been produced using variants of a modified 180 nm CMOS process with different substrate materials. The CLICTD tracker demonstrator design includes an innovative sub-pixel segmentation scheme for a readout pitch of 300 micron x 30 micron. An extensive test-beam measurement campaign has been performed to compare the various CLICTD design and processing variants. Recent measurements with the ATTRACT FASTPIX timing demonstrator produced in the same 180 nm CMOS process have demonstrated the feasibility of performing time tagging on single-hit level with a precision of approximately 100 ps for a pixel pitch of 20 micron and below. Similar concepts are currently being explored in a 65 nm CMOS process offering further performance improvements. To predict and optimise the performance of the various prototype technologies, a fast and versatile Monte Carlo Simulation Tool (Allpix-Squared) has been developed. This contribution introduces the requirements and gives an overview of the R&D program for silicon-based vertex and tracking detectors at future lepton colliders, highlighting new results from measurements and simulations of recent prototypes.

23. Simulation Studies and Characterisation of Monolithic Silicon Pixel-Detector Prototypes for Future Collider Detectors & Unsupervised Anomaly Detection in Belle II Pixel-Detector Data

Abstract: Present and future high-energy physics experiments pose challenging demands on the detector systems and analysis methods. This dissertation addresses both aspects by focusing on the optimisation and characterisation of a novel technology demonstrator for a monolithic silicon sensor design and the development of model-agnostic analysis techniques for the pixel detector at the Belle II experiment. In the first part, the requirements of vertex and tracking detectors for future Higgs factories such as the Compact Linear e+e- Collider (CLIC) or the Future Circular e+e- Collider (FCCee) are addressed. The experimental conditions at these colliders require high-precision sensors with a low material content. The CLIC Tracker Detector (CLICTD) is a technology demonstrator for a monolithic pixel sensor fabricated in a modified 180 nm CMOS imaging process that targets the requirements of the CLIC tracker. The performance of the sensor is assessed for different operation conditions, pixel designs and wafer materials. A spatial resolution down to (3.9 ± 0.2) μm, time resolution down to (4.8 ± 0.1) ns as well as a hit detection efficiency >99.7 % over a wide range of detection thresholds is observed and the CLIC tracker requirements are found to be fulfilled. Modern silicon sensors such as CLICTD incorporate complex sensor designs that are challenging to simulate and model. This dissertation presents a combination of elec- trostatic finite-element and transient Monte Carlo simulations to provide simultaneous access to precise sensor modelling and high-statistics simulation samples. The advanced simulation approach is validated against data and excellent agreement is found over a wide range of different operation conditions. In the second part, patterns of minimally-processed pixel hits recorded by the Belle II pixel detector are investigated. In particular, a focus on model-agnostic approaches is placed that enable an unbiased exploration of data, while filtering out anomalous detector signatures that could hint at new physics scenarios. The identification of hypothetical magnetic monopoles against Belle II beam background is presented using Self-Organizing Kohonen Maps and Autoencoders. The two unsupervised algorithms are compared to a convolutional Multilayer Perceptron and a superior signal efficiency at high background- rejection levels is found for the unsupervised techniques.

Abstract: Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research / A 1031, 166491 (2022). doi:10.1016/j.nima.2022.166491, An ever-increasing demand for high-performance silicon sensors requires complex sensor designs that are challenging to simulate and model. The combination of electrostatic finite element simulations with a transient Monte Carlo approach provides simultaneous access to precise sensor modelling and high statistics. The high simulation statistics enable the inclusion of Landau fluctuations and production of secondary particles, which offers a realistic simulation scenario. The transient simulation approach is an important tool to achieve an accurate time-resolved description of the sensor, which is crucial in the face of novel detector prototypes with increasingly precise timing capabilities. The simulated time resolution as a function of operating parameters as well as the full transient pulse can be monitored and assessed, which offers a new perspective for the optimisation and characterisation of silicon sensors. In this paper, a combination of electrostatic finite-element simulations using 3D TCAD and transient Monte Carlo simulations with the Allpix2 framework are presented for a monolithic CMOS pixel sensor with a small collection electrode, that is characterised by a highly inhomogeneous, complex electric field. The results are compared to transient 3D TCAD simulations that offer a precise simulation of the transient behaviour but long computation times. Abstract: The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it.
