Abstract

We present the first public version of Caravel, a C++17 framework for the computation of multi-loop scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory, based on the numerical unitarity method. Caravel is composed of modules for the $D$-dimensional decomposition of integrands of scattering amplitudes into master and surface terms, the computation of tree-level amplitudes in floating point or finite-field arithmetic, the numerical computation of one- and two-loop amplitudes in QCD and Einstein gravity, and functional reconstruction tools. We provide programs that showcase Caravel's main functionalities and allow to compute selected one- and two-loop amplitudes.

Abstract

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. Abstract

We present the analytic form of all leading-color two-loop five-parton helicity amplitudes in QCD. The results are analytically reconstructed from exact numerical evaluations over finite fields. Combining a judicious choice of variables with a new approach to the treatment of particle states in $D$ dimensions for the numerical evaluation of amplitudes, we obtain the analytic expressions with a modest computational effort. Their systematic simplification using multivariate partial-fraction decomposition leads to a particularly compact form. Our results provide all two-loop amplitudes required for the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of three jets at hadron colliders in the leading-color approximation., Comment: v2: Minor text changes, matches published version

Abstract

We present the analytic form of the two-loop five-gluon scattering amplitudes in QCD for a complete set of independent helicity configurations of external gluons. These include the first analytic results for five-point two-loop amplitudes relevant for the computation of next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD corrections at hadron colliders. The results were obtained by reconstructing analytic expressions from numerical evaluations. 5. Debugging procedural level designs with mental maps

Abstract

Procedural Level Generation provides tools and techniques for generating many game levels from a single specification. Instead of creating levels by hand, level designers make use of generators that automate the creation process. However, iteratively improving a level's design requires encoding generators of adventures, puzzles and encounters in notations that bear little resemblance to generated content. Raising the level quality is difficult, because it is hard to reason about bugs that can manifest inside generated content. We take the position that debugging requires special attention. We argue that advancing the area of PCG calls for tools and debugging techniques that speed up procedural level design and empower level designers. We propose exploring how Domain-Specific Languages can help in authoring a level’s design, validating the generator’s code, and debugging issues in generated content. We introduce Mental Maps, a visual language that expresses the spacial relations between rooms, objects and paths. We discuss how Mental Maps can serve as generator blueprints before the generation happens, and as debugging lenses for projecting issues afterwards.

Abstract

International audience; We discuss the recent calculation of the analytic form of the two-loop five-parton amplitudes in QCD. These constitute the full set of amplitudes required for the computation of NNLO QCD corrections to three-jet production at hadron colliders in the leading-color approximation. The calculation is done by combining efficient numerical evaluations and analytic reconstruction techniques. The techniques we present open the door to the evaluation of multi-leg two-loop amplitudes beyond the current state of the art.

Abstract

International audience; The operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been a great success with Run 1 culminating in the discovery of the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2012. In Run 2, the LHC experiments have moved towards performing high precision measurements with uncertainties reaching below percent level for certain observables. Looking forward to the Future Circular Collider with electron beams (FCC-ee), which will operate in the experimentally much cleaner environment of electron-positron initial states, there will be an even more dramatic increase in experimental precision. In order to exploit the precision measurements, the theory community will need to provide high-precision predictions that match the experimental uncertainties. This requires the development of efficient ways to compute these corrections, breaking through the current computational bottlenecks.

Abstract

Procedural level generation for games is an active field of research with successful applications. However, how to generate content that embodies design intent is still an open research question. Level designers lack abstractions and tools for authoring generated artifacts for affecting emotion. We propose a novel pattern language for generative level design inspired by Appraisal Theory. Its patterns enable designers to add meaning, depth, and cohesiveness to the resulting content, and modify artifacts to make the content more engaging. We illustrate how these patterns can be implemented in a generative grammar for level generation for an adventure game. Formative evaluation of generated level content demonstrates the feasibility of the approach and suggests points for further improvements. Future work could focus on other elements which seem important for affecting emotions, including pacing, perception, and expectation.

In early game development phases game designers adjust game rules in a rapid, iterative and flexible way. In later phases, when software prototypes are available, play testing provides more detailed feedback about player experience. More often than not, the realized and the intended gameplay emerging from game software differ. Unfortunately, adjusting it is hard because designers lack a means for efficiently defining, fine-tuning and balancing game mechanics. The language Machinations provides a graphical notation for expressing the rules of game economies that fits with a designer’s understanding and vocabulary, but is limited to design itself. Abstract

Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is a low-molecular-weight compound which is known to cause occupational asthma in 5 to 10% of exposed workers. Previously, we developed a murine model to investigate TDI-induced occupational asthma. Short-term exposure to TDI (skin sensitization twice daily on Day 0 and Day 1 and intranasal challenge on Day 8) led to a nonspecific tracheal hyperractivity 24 h after the challenge in TDI-sensitized mice when compared with nonsensitized mice whereas no TDI-specific IgE antibodies were found in the serum. Because 20% of subjects with TDI-induced occupational asthma exhibit an increase in serum IgE antibodies, we exposed mice for a longer period of time to investigate whether this procedure could induce TDI-specific antibody production in exposed mice. Long-term exposure (skin sensitization on 6 consecutive weeks followed by intranasal challenge on Week 7) resulted in the production of total IgE and IgG and TDI-specific IgE and IgG antibodies. Airway reactivity to various agonists was also measured in vitro and in vivo in long-term exposed mice. TDI-sensitized mice exhibited in vitro tracheal hyperreactivity to carbachol 3 h after the challenge when compared with the nonsensitized mice. Moreover, in vivo airway hyperresponsiveness to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5HT]) was found 3 h after the challenge in TDI-sensitized mice. Interestingly, in vivo airway hyperresponsiveness was not observed at any time point in the mice exposed to TDI according to the short-term protocol. In conclusion, by altering the exposure time and/or cumulative dosage of TDI different biological reactions can be elicited in exposed mice. This important finding might be a reflection of the diversity of symptoms found in patients suffering from TDI-induced asthma. Both the short-exposure and the long-exposure model will be useful to further investigate the mechanisms of action of TDI.

Abstract

We investigated whether inhaling peak concentrations of aldehydes several times daily is more damaging than semi-continuously inhaling low-dose aldehydes. We exposed Xpa-/-p53+/- knock-out mice either intermittently or semi-continuously to mixed acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and acrolein. The intermittent regimen entailed exposure to the aldehydes 7 min every 45 min, 12 times/day, 5 days/week, corresponding to concentrations inhaled by smokers. Semi-continuously exposed animals received half the dose of aldehydes in 8 h/day, 5 days/week. Some mice in each group were sacrificed after 13 weeks of exposure; the rest breathed clean air until the end of 1 year. Mice injected intratracheally with benzo[a]pyrene formed a positive control group. The nasal cavity, lungs, and any macroscopically abnormal organs of all mice were analysed histopathologically. After 13 weeks of exposure, the subacute, overall, histopathological changes induced by the inhalation differed noticeably between the intermittently and semi-continuously treated Xpa-/-p53+/- knock-out mice. After 13 weeks of mixed aldehyde exposure, atrophy of the olfactory epithelium generally appeared, but disappeared after I year (adaptation and/or recovery). Respiratory epithelia] metaplasia of the olfactory epithelium occurred at a higher incidence at I year. Except for a significantly greater number of tumours observed in knock-out mice compared to wild mice (semi-continuous aldehyde exposure and controls), no differences between the semi-continuous and intermittent exposure groups were observed. Abstract

An ex vivo model system was developed to investigate melanocyte migration. Within this model system, melanocytes migrate among other epidermal cells in the epibolic outgrowth of skin explants. This process is initiated by loss of contact inhibition of epidermal cells at the rim of the explants and by locally produced chemotactic factors. Punch biopsies provided explants of reproducible diameter. Optimal culture conditions include medium consisting of Dulbecco's Minimal Essential Medium containing 10% inactivated normal human serum and placement of explants epidermal side up at the air-liquid interphase. Within 7 days, epidermal cells completely surround the explant. Approximately 3 days after the onset of keratinocyte migration, melanocytes distribute themselves within the newly formed epidermis. Throughout the 7-day culture period, melanocytes and keratinocytes show maintenance of subcellular morphology, and the dermo-epidermal junction remains intact. Melanocyte migration was quantified using immunoperoxidase staining in combination with light microscopy and computer-aided image analysis. Preliminary results using the model system to compare migration in control and nonlesional vitiligo skin indicate that no inherent migration defect is responsible for impaired repigmentation of vitiligo lesions. The organotypic culture model system allows for investigations on melanocytes within their environment of autologous epidermal and dermal components, closely resembling in vivo circumstances in human skin
