SPIDER is a balloon-borne instrument designed to map the cosmic microwave background at degree-angular scales in the presence of Galactic foregrounds. SPIDER has mapped a large sky area in the Southern Hemisphere using more than 2000 transition-edge sensors (TESs) during two NASA Long Duration Balloon flights above the Antarctic continent. During its first flight in January 2015, SPIDER observed in the 95 GHz and 150 GHz frequency bands, setting constraints on the B-mode signature of primordial gravitational waves. Its second flight in the 2022-23 season added new receivers at 280 GHz, each using an array of TESs coupled to the sky through feedhorns formed from stacks of silicon wafers. These receivers are optimized to produce deep maps of polarized Galactic dust emission over a large sky area, providing a unique data set with lasting value to the field. Using data from the first flight of SPIDER and from Planck HFI, we probe the properties of polarized emission from interstellar dust in the SPIDER observing region. Component separation algorithms operating in both the spatial and harmonic domains are applied to probe their consistency and to quantify modeling errors associated with their assumptions. Analyses spanning the full SPIDER region demonstrate that i) the spectral energy distribution of diffuse Galactic dust emission is broadly consistent with a modified-blackbody (MBB) model with a spectral index of $\beta_\mathrm{d}=1.45\pm0.05$ $(1.47\pm0.06)$ for $E$ ($B$)-mode polarization, slightly lower than that reported by Planck for the full sky; ii) its angular power spectrum is broadly consistent with a power law; and iii) there is no significant detection of line-of-sight decorrelation of the astrophysical polarization. The size of the SPIDER region further allows for a statistically meaningful analysis of the variation in foreground properties within it. Assuming a fixed dust temperature $T_\mathrm{d}=19.6$ K, an analysis of two independent sub-regions of that field results in inferred values of $\beta_\mathrm{d}=1.52\pm0.06$ and $\beta_\mathrm{d}=1.09\pm0.09$, which are inconsistent at the $3.9\,\sigma$ level. Furthermore, a joint analysis of SPIDER and Planck 217 and 353 GHz data within a subset of the SPIDER region is inconsistent with a simple MBB at more than $3\,\sigma$, assuming a common morphology of polarized dust emission over the full range of frequencies. These modeling uncertainties have a small--but non-negligible--impact on limits on the cosmological tensor-to-scalar ratio derived from the \spider dataset. The three-dimensional galaxy power spectrum is a powerful probe of primordial non-Gaussianity and additional general relativistic (GR) effects on large scales, which can be constrained by the current and upcoming large-scale structure surveys. In this work, we calculate the linear-order relativistic power spectrum in the spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis, a coordinate system that preserves the geometry of the curved sky and fully accounts for the wide-angle effect. In particular, we model the GR effects present in the discrete SFB power spectrum, which is a more efficient and stable decomposition of the galaxy density field compared to the continuous SFB basis in the presence of radial windows. To validate our GR calculations, we introduce a mapping between the angular power spectrum and the SFB power spectrum, and we compare our calculations with outputs from CLASS. We discuss the rich pattern of GR effects in the SFB basis and compare the GR effects to the local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) effect. The Doppler and lensing effects have different angular and Fourier dependence compared to the PNG in the SFB basis, while the gravitational potential term is more degenerate with the PNG and comparable to a signal of $f_{\rm NL}\sim 1$. Adaptive control provides techniques for adjusting control parameters in real time to maintain system performance despite unknown or changing process parameters. These methods use real data to tune controllers and adjust plant models or controller parameters. The field has progressed significantly since the 1970s, helped by digital computers. Early applications offered essential feedback, and theoretical advances solved many basic problems. This book comprehensively treats adaptive control, guiding readers from basic problems to analytical solutions with practical applications. Presenting a unified view is challenging due to various design steps and applications. However, a coherent presentation of basic techniques is now possible. The book uses a discrete-time approach to reflect the role of digital computers and shares practical experiences and understanding of different control designs. Mathematical aspects of synthesizing and analyzing algorithms are emphasized, though they alone may not solve practical problems. The book includes applications of control techniques but stresses that a solid mathematical understanding is crucial for creatively applying them to new challenges. Mathematical synthesis and analysis are highlighted, but they must be supplemented with practical problem-solving and algorithm modifications for specific applications.

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Conservation laws play a crucial role in the modeling of heavy-ion collisions, including the those for charges such as baryon number (B), strangeness (S), and electric charge (Q). In this study, we present a new 2+1 relativistic viscous hydrodynamic code called CCAKE which uses the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) formalism to locally conserve BSQ charges, together with an extended description of the multi-dimensional equation of state (EoS) obtained from lattice Quantum Chromodynamics. Initial conditions for CCAKE are supplied by the ICCING model, which samples gluon splittings into quark anti-quark pairs to generate the initial BSQ charge distributions. We study correlations between the BSQ charges and find that local BSQ fluctuations remain finite during the evolution, with corresponding chemical potentials of ($\sim100$--$200 \,\rm MeV$) at freeze-out. We find that our framework produces reasonable multiplicities of identified particles and that ICCING has no significant effect on the collective flow of all charged particles nor of identified particles when only one particle of interest is considered. However, we show specifically for Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV that ICCING does have an effect on collective flow of identified particles if two particles of interest are considered., Comment: 51 pages, 28 Figures

Finite discrete-time dynamical systems (FDDS) model phenomena that evolve deterministically in discrete time. It is possible to define sum and product operations on these systems (disjoint union and direct product, respectively) giving a commutative semiring. This algebraic structure led to several works employing polynomial equations to model hypotheses on phenomena modelled using FDDS. To solve these equations, algorithms for performing the division and computing $k$-th roots are needed. In this paper, we propose two polynomial algorithms for these tasks, under the condition that the result is a connected FDDS. This ultimately leads to an efficient solution to equations of the type $AX^k=B$ for connected $X$. These results are some of the important final steps for solving more general polynomial equations on FDDS.

We present six nearly full-sky maps made from data taken by radiometers on the Juno satellite during its 5-year flight to Jupiter. The maps represent integrated emission over $\sim 4\%$ passbands spaced approximately in octaves between 600 MHz and 21.9 GHz. Long time-scale offset drifts are removed in all bands, and, for the two lowest frequency bands, gain drifts are also removed from the maps via a self-calibration algorithm similar to the NPIPE pipeline used by the Planck collaboration. We show that, after this solution is applied, residual noise in the maps is consistent with thermal radiometer noise. We verify our map solutions with several consistency tests and end-to-end simulations. The paper explores the use of dynamic adaptation gain/step size (DAG) for improving the adaptation transient performance of variable step-size LMS (VS-LMS) adaptation algorithms. A generic form for the implementation of the DAG within the VS-LMS algorithms is provided. The properties of the VS-LMS algorithms using dynamic adaptation gain are discussed in detail. Stability issues in deterministic environment and convergence properties in stochastic environment are examined. A transient performance analysis is proposed. SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, is a NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75 micron and 5 micron with spectral resolving power ~40 between 0.75 and 3.8 micron and ~120 between 3.8 and 5 micron At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 0.75-to-5 micron spectra of each 6.2"x6.2" pixel on the sky - 14 billion spectra in all. This paper updates an earlier description of SPHEREx presenting changes made during the mission's Preliminary Design Phase, including a discussion of instrument integration and test and a summary of the data processing, analysis, and distribution plans.

The three-dimensional galaxy power spectrum is a powerful probe of primordial non-Gaussianity and additional general relativistic effects, which become important on large scales. At the same time, wide-angle (WA) effects due to differing lines-of-sight (LOS) on the curved sky also become important with large angular separation. In this work, we accurately model WA and Doppler effects using the spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) formalism, before transforming the result into the commonly used power spectrum multipoles (PSM). This mapping from the SFB power spectrum to PSM represents a new way to non-perturbatively model WA and GR effects present in the PSM, which we validate with log-normal mocks. Moreover, for the first time, we can compute the analytical PSM Gaussian covariance on large scales, exactly including WA-induced mode-couplings, without resorting to any plane-parallel approximations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

As galaxy redshift surveys expand to larger areas on the sky, effects coming from the curved nature of the sky become important, introducing wide-angle (WA) corrections to the power spectrum multipoles at large galaxy-pair separations. These corrections particularly impact the measurement of physical effects that are predominantly detected on large scales, such the local primordial non-Gaussianities. In this paper, we examine the validity of the perturbative approach to modeling WA effects in the power spectrum multipoles for upcoming surveys by comparing to measurements on simulated galaxy catalogs using the Yamamoto estimator. We show that on the scales $k \lesssim 2\pi/\chi$, where $\chi$ is the comoving distance to the galaxies, the estimated power spectrum monopole differs by up to $5\%$ from the second-order perturbative result, with similar absolute deviations for higher multipoles. To enable precision comparison, we pioneer an improved treatment of the $\mu$-leakage effects in the Yamamoto estimator. Additionally, we devise a solution to include $f_{\rm NL}$ in the perturbative WA calculations, avoiding divergences in the original framework through the integral constraint. This allows us to conclude that WA effects can mimic a $f_{\rm NL}\sim5$ signal in the lowest SPHEREx redshift bin. We recommend using non-perturbative methods to model large scale power spectrum multipoles for $f_{\rm NL}$ measurements. Line intensity mapping (LIM) has emerged as a promising tool for probing the 3D large-scale structure through the aggregate emission of spectral lines. The presence of interloper lines poses a crucial challenge in extracting the signal from the target line in LIM. In this work, we introduce a novel method for LIM analysis that simultaneously extracts line signals from multiple spectral lines, utilizing the covariance of native LIM data elements defined in the spectral--angular space. We leverage correlated information from different lines to perform joint inference on all lines simultaneously, employing a Bayesian analysis framework. We present the formalism, demonstrate our technique with a mock survey setup resembling the SPHEREx deep field observation, and consider four spectral lines within the SPHEREx spectral coverage in the near infrared: H$\alpha$, $[$\ion{O}{3}$]$, H$\beta$, and $[$\ion{O}{2}$]$. We demonstrate that our method can extract the power spectrum of all four lines at the $\gtrsim 10\sigma$ level at $z<2$. For the brightest line, H$\alpha$, the $10\sigma$ sensitivity can be achieved out to $z\sim3$. When working in a proof assistant, automation is key to discharging routine proof goals such as equations between algebraic expressions. Homotopy Type Theory allows the user to reason about higher structures, such as topological spaces, using higher inductive types (HITs) and univalence. Cubical Agda is an extension of Agda with computational support for HITs and univalence. A difficulty when working in Cubical Agda is dealing with the complex combinatorics of higher structures, an infinite-dimensional generalisation of equational reasoning. To solve these higher-dimensional equations consists in constructing cubes with specified boundaries. We develop a simplified cubical language in which we isolate and study two automation problems: contortion solving, where we attempt to "contort" a cube to fit a given boundary, and the more general Kan solving, where we search for solutions that involve pasting multiple cubes together. Both problems are difficult in the general case - Kan solving is even undecidable - so we focus on heuristics that perform well on practical examples. We provide a solver for the contortion problem using a reformulation of contortions in terms of poset maps, while we solve Kan problems using constraint satisfaction programming. We have implemented our algorithms in an experimental Haskell solver that can be used to automatically solve goals presented by Cubical Agda. We illustrate this with a case study establishing the Eckmann-Hilton theorem using our solver, as well as various benchmarks - providing the ground for further study of proof automation in cubical type theories.

The bispectrum, the three-point correlation in Fourier space, is a crucial statistic for studying many effects targeted by the next-generation galaxy surveys, such as primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) and general relativistic (GR) effects on large scales. In this work we develop a formalism for the bispectrum in the Spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis - a natural basis for computing correlation functions on the curved sky, as it diagonalizes the Laplacian operator in spherical coordinates. Working in the SFB basis allows for line-of-sight effects such as redshift space distortions (RSD) and GR to be accounted for exactly, i.e without having to resort to perturbative expansions to go beyond the plane-parallel approximation. Only analytic results for the SFB bispectrum exist in the literature given the intensive computations needed. We numerically calculate the SFB bispectrum for the first time, enabled by a few techniques: We implement a template decomposition of the redshift-space kernel $Z_2$ into Legendre polynomials, and separately treat the PNG and velocity-divergence terms. We derive an identity to integrate a product of three spherical harmonics connected by a Dirac delta function as a simple sum, and use it to investigate the limit of a homogeneous and isotropic Universe. Moreover, we present a formalism for convolving the signal with separable window functions, and use a toy spherically symmetric window to demonstrate the computation and give insights into the properties of the observed bispectrum signal. We use QCD effective kinetic theory to calculate far-from-equilibrium dynamics on an event-by-event basis within the K\o{}MP\o{}ST framework. We present non-equilibrium charge response functions and the dynamical evolution of the conserved charge current pertinent to the early-time dynamics of heavy-ion collisions at the highest energies. The K\o{}MP\o{}ST framework with conserved baryon, strangeness, and electric charges can then be readily implemented into a multistage model allowing for the initialization of a non-equilibrium charge current in hydrodynamic simulations.

At the Large Hadron Collider it is possible to generate BSQ (baryon, strangeness, and electric) charge density fluctuations from gluon splittings into quark/anti-quark pairs, generated within the ICCING model. In this work, we implement BSQ charge dynamics in a fully integrated framework. We propagate these conserved charges within an upgraded version of the v-USPhydro hydrodynamic model, which conserves the BSQ densities exactly. Our hydrodynamic simulation uses the full 4D equation of state $\left\{T,\mu_B,\mu_S,\mu_Q\right\}$ from lattice Quantum Chromodynamics and includes decays from the Particle Data Group 2016+. We study the dynamical trajectories of fluid cells passing through the QCD phase diagram. We simulate galaxy properties and redshift estimation for SPHEREx, the next NASA Medium Class Explorer. To make robust models of the galaxy population and test spectro-photometric redshift performance for SPHEREx, we develop a set of synthetic spectral energy distributions based on detailed fits to COSMOS2020 photometry spanning 0.1-8 micron. Given that SPHEREx obtains low-resolution spectra, emission lines will be important for some fraction of galaxies. Here we expand on previous work, using better photometry and photometric redshifts from COSMOS2020, and tight empirical relations to predict robust emission line strengths and ratios. A second galaxy catalog derived from the GAMA survey is generated to ensure the bright ($m_{AB}<18$ in the i-band) sample is representative over larger areas. Using template fitting to estimate photometric continuum redshifts, we forecast redshift recovery of 19 million galaxies over 30000 sq. deg. with $\sigma_z<0.003(1+z)$, 445 million with $\sigma_z<0.1(1+z)$ and 810 million with $\sigma_z<0.2(1+z)$. We also find through idealized tests that emission line information from spectrally dithered flux measurements can yield redshifts with accuracy beyond that implied by the naive SPHEREx channel resolution, motivating the development of a hybrid continuum-line redshift estimation approach., Comment: 33 pages, 30 figures, 3 tables. The bispectrum is an important statistics helpful for measuring the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ to less than order unity in error, which would allow us to distinguish between single and multi-field inflation models. The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission is particularly well-suited for making this measurement with its $\sim$100-band all-sky observations in the near-infrared. Consequently, the SPHEREx data will contain galaxies with spectroscopic-like redshift measurements as well as those with much larger errors. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of photometric redshift errors on $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ constraints in the context of an updated multi-tracer forecast for SPHEREx, finding that the azimuthal averages of the first three even bispectrum multipoles are no longer sufficient for capturing most of the information (as opposed to the case of spectroscopic surveys shown in the literature). The final SPHEREx result with all five galaxy samples and six redshift bins is however not severely impacted because the total result is dominated by the samples with the best redshift errors, while the worse samples serve to reduce cosmic variance. Our fiducial result of $\sigma_{f_{\mathrm{NL}}} = 0.7$ from bispectrum alone is increased by $18\%$ and $3\%$ when using $l_{\mathrm{max}}=0$ and 2 respectively. We also explore the impact on parameter constraints when varying the fiducial redshift errors, as well as using subsets of multi-tracer combinations or triangles with different squeezing factors. Tuning into the bass notes of the large-scale structure requires careful attention to geometrical effects arising from wide angles. The spherical Fourier-Bessel (SFB) basis provides a harmonic-space coordinate system that fully accounts for all wide-angle effects. To demonstrate the feasibility of the SFB power spectrum, in this paper we validate our SFB pipeline by applying it to lognormal, and both complete and realistic EZmock simulations that were generated for eBOSS DR16 LRG sample. We include redshift space distortions and the local average effect (aka integral constraint). Gravitational waves (GWs) are a new avenue of observing our Universe. So far, we have seen them in the ~10-100 Hz range, and there are hints that we might soon detect them in the nanohertz regime. Multiple efforts are underway to access GWs across the frequency spectrum; however, parts of the frequency space are currently not covered by any planned or future observatories. Photometric surveys can bridge the microhertz gap in the spectrum between LISA and Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) through relative astrometric measurements. Similar to PTA measurements, these astrometric measurements rely on the correlated spacetime distortions produced by gravitational waves at Earth, which induce coherent, apparent stellar position changes on the sky. To detect microhertz GWs with an imaging survey, a combination of high relative astrometric precision, a large number of observed stars, and a high cadence of exposures are needed. Roman's proposed core community survey, the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey (RGBTDS), would have all of these components. RGBTDS would be sensitive to GWs with frequencies ranging from $7.7\times 10^{-8}$ Hz to $5.6\times 10^{-4}$ Hz, which opens up a unique GW observing window for supermassive black hole binaries and their waveform evolution. Active processes drive and guide biological dynamics across scales -- from subcellular cytoskeletal remodelling, through tissue development in embryogenesis, to population-level bacterial colonies expansion. In each of these, biological functionality requires collective flows to occur while self-organized structures are protected; however, the mechanisms by which active flows can spontaneously constrain their dynamics to preserve structure have not previously been explained. By studying collective flows and defect dynamics in active nematic films, we demonstrate the existence of a self-constraint -- a two-way, spontaneously arising relationship between activity-driven isosurfaces of flow boundaries and mesoscale nematic structures. Our results show that self-motile defects are tightly constrained to viscometric surfaces -- contours along which vorticity and strain-rate balance. This in turn reveals that self-motile defects break mirror symmetry when they move along a single viscometric surface, in contrast with expectations. This is explained by an interdependence between viscometric surfaces and bend walls -- elongated narrow kinks in the orientation field. Although we focus on extensile nematic films, numerical results show the constraint holds whenever activity leads to motile half-charge defects. This mesoscale cross-field self-constraint offers a new framework for tackling complex 3D active turbulence, designing dynamic control into biomimetic materials, and understanding how biological systems can employ active stress for dynamic self-organization., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Electric throttle valves represent a challenge for control design, as their dynamics involve strong nonlinearities, characterized by an asymmetric hysteresis. Carrying experiments on multiple valves, a large variability in the characteristics of each valve and erratic steady-state behaviors can also be noticed, impairing classical model-based control strategies. Nevertheless, local data-driven linear models can be obtained and simple proportional-integral (PI) controllers, tuned individually for each valve with the appropriate data set, provide good tracking performance. As these controllers cannot be transposed from one valve to another, a robust strategy and an adaptive controller (using identification in closed-loop and controller re-design) may be necessary to propose a general method. This review aims at providing an extensive discussion of modern constraints relevant for dense and hot strongly interacting matter. It includes theoretical first-principle results from lattice and perturbative QCD, as well as chiral effective field theory results. From the experimental side, it includes heavy-ion collision and low-energy nuclear physics results, as well as observations from neutron stars and their mergers. The validity of different constraints, concerning specific conditions and ranges of applicability, is also provided.

Cells are fundamental building blocks of living organisms displaying an array of shapes, morphologies, and textures that encode specific functions and physical behaviors. Elucidating the rules of this code remains a challenge. In this work, we create biomimetic structural building blocks by coating ellipsoidal droplets of a smectic liquid crystal with a protein-based active cytoskeletal gel, thus obtaining core-shell structures. By exploiting the patterned texture and anisotropic shape of the smectic core, we were able to mold the complex nematodynamics of the interfacial active material and identify new time-dependent states where topological defects periodically oscillate between rotational and translational regimes. Our nemato-hydrodynamic simulations of active nematics demonstrate that, beyond topology and activity, the dynamics of the active material are profoundly influenced by the local curvature and smectic texture of the droplet, as well as by external hydrodynamic forces. These results illustrate how the incorporation of these constraints into active nematic shells orchestrates remarkable spatio-temporal motifs, offering critical new insights into biological processes and providing compelling prospects for designing bio-inspired micro-machines., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures
