Abstract

Using ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations combined with linear-response theory, we studied the x-ray absorption near-edge spectra (XANES) of a two-temperature dense copper plasma. As the temperature increases, XANES spectra exhibit a pre-edge structure balanced by a reduction of the absorption just behind the edge. By performing systematic simulations for various thermodynamic conditions, we establish a formulation to deduce the electronic temperature Te directly from the spectral integral of the pre-edge that can be used for various thermodynamic conditions encountered in a femtosecond heating experiment where thermal non equilibrium and expanded states have to be considered., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures submitted to Physical Review B

Abstract

In this letter, we describe the stabilization of indium antimonide (InSb) in the high-pressure orthorhombic phase (InSb-III) at ambient conditions. Until now, InSb-III has only been observed above 9 GPa, or at around 3 GPa as a metastable structure during the phase transition from cubic zinc blende (InSb-I) to orthorhombic InSb-IV. The crystalline phase transition from InSb-I to InSb-III was driven by an ultrashort, laser-generated, non-hydrostatic pressure pulse. The transition occurred in preferred orientations locked to the initial orientation of the InSb-I crystal, breaking the symmetry of the InSb-I cubic cell to form the InSb-III orthorhombic cell.

Abstract

Several important geophysical features such as heat flux at the Core-Mantle Boundary or geodynamo production are intimately related with the temperature profile in the Earth's core. However, measuring the melting curve of iron at conditions corresponding to the Earth inner core boundary under pressure of 330 GPa has eluded scientists for several decades. Significant discrepancies in previously reported iron melting temperatures at high pressure have called into question the validity of dynamic measurements. We report measurements made with a novel approach using X-ray absorption spectroscopy using an X-ray free electron laser source coupled to a laser shock experiment. We determine the state of iron along the shock Hugoniot up to 420 GPa (+/- 50) and 10800 K (+/- 1390) and find an upper boundary for the melting curve of iron by detecting solid iron at 130 GPa and molten at 260, 380 and 420 GPa along the shock Hugoniot. Our result establishes unambiguous agreement between dynamic measurement and recent extrapolations from static data thus resolving the long-standing controversy over the reliability of using dynamic compression to study the melting of iron at conditions close to the Earth's inner core boundary and beyond., Comment: 9 pages 3 figures

Abstract

Clusters excited by intense laser pulses are a unique source of warm dense matter, that has been the subject of intensive experimental studies. The majority of those investigations concerns atomic clusters, whereas the evolution of molecular clusters excited by intense laser pulses is less explored. In this work we trace the dynamics of $\mathrm{CO_2}$ clusters triggered by a few-cycle 1.45-$\mu$m driving pulse through the detection of XUV fluorescence induced by a delayed 800-nm ignition pulse. Striking differences among fluorescence dynamics from different ionic species are observed.

Abstract

We report time-resolved X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) measurements of warm dense MgO. We used a high power nanosecond pulse to drive a strong uniform shock wave into an MgO sample, and a picosecond pulse to generate a broadband X-ray source near the Mg K-edge. We used this setup to obtain XANES spectra across a large area of the phase diagram, with densities up to 6.8 g/cc and temperatures up to 30 000 K, conditions at which no prior investigations of electronic and ionic structure exist. Our XANES results, together with quantum molecular dynamic simulations, demonstrate that the sample metallizes due to the bandgap closure as it melts, after which it shows typical behavior for a disordered ionic liquid.

Abstract

We present results on laser-driven relativistic electron beam propagation through aluminum samples, which are either solid and cold or compressed and heated by laser-induced shock. A full numerical description of fast electron generation and transport is found to reproduce the experimental absolute K-alpha yield and spot size measurements for varying target thicknesses, and to sequentially quantify the collisional and resistive electron stopping powers. The results demonstrate that both stopping mechanisms are enhanced in compressed Al samples and are attributed to the increase in the medium density and resistivity, respectively. For the achieved time-and space-averaged electronic current density, < j(h)> similar to 8 x 10(10) A/cm(2) in the samples, the collisional and resistive stopping powers in warm and compressed Al are estimated to be 1.5 keV/mu m and 0.8 keV/mu m, respectively. By contrast, for cold and solid Al, the corresponding estimated values are 1.1 keV/mu m and 0.6 keV/mu m. Prospective numerical simulations involving higher j(h) show that the resistive stopping power can reach the same level as the collisional one. In addition to the effects of compression, the effect of the transient behavior of the resistivity of Al during relativistic electron beam transport becomes progressively more dominant, and for a significantly high current density, j(h) similar to 10(12) A/cm(2), cancels the difference in the electron resistive stopping power (or the total stopping power in units of areal density) between solid and compressed samples. Analytical calculations extend the analysis up to j(h) = 10(14) A/cm(2) (representative of the full-scale fast ignition scenario of inertial confinement fusion), where a very rapid transition to the Spitzer resistivity regime saturates the resistive stopping power, averaged over the electron beam duration, to values of similar to 1 keV/mu m. Abstract

This paper presents the goals and some of the results of experiments conducted within the Working Package 10 (Fusion Experimental Programme) of the HiPER Project. These experiments concern the study of the physics connected to 'advanced ignition schemes', i.e. the fast ignition and the shock ignition approaches to inertial fusion. Such schemes are aimed at achieving a higher gain, as compared with the classical approach which is used in NIF, as required for future reactors, and make fusion possible with smaller facilities. In particular, a series of experiments related to fast ignition were performed at the RAL (UK) and LULI (France) Laboratories and studied the propagation of fast electrons (created by a short-pulse ultra-high-intensity beam) in compressed matter, created either by cylindrical implosions or by compression of planar targets by (planar) laser-driven shock waves. A more recent experiment was performed at PALS and investigated the laser-plasma coupling in the 10 16 W cm -2 intensity regime of interest for shock ignition. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

In order to extend plasma accelerators, the laser beam has to be guided inside gas or plasma over a distance of the order of the dephasing length, which is typically much larger than the diffraction length [z.sub.R] of the laser. A capillary tube can be used as a waveguide for high-intensity laser pulses over distances well in excess of [z.sub.R]. Experimental demonstration of monomode guiding over 100 [z.sub.R] of [10.sup.16] W/[cm.sup.2] pulses has been obtained in evacuated capillary tubes (45-70-[micro]m inner diameter). A drop of transmission has been observed when the intensity of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is high enough to ionize the capillary tube entrance. Propagation in helium gas-filled (10-40 mbar) capillary tubes has been studied at intensities up to [10.sup.16] W/[cm.sup.2]; a plasma column with on-axis density of the order of [10.sup.17] [cm.sup.-3] has been created on a length of the order of 4 cm. The use of a capillary tube for an extended accelerator is discussed for the case of linear, resonant excitation of plasma waves by laser wakefield. Index Terms--Guiding, plasma accelerator.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate the evolution of the electronic structure of fused silica in a dense plasma regime using time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We use a nanosecond (ns) laser beam to generate a strong uniform shock wave in the sample and a picosecond (ps) pulse to produce a broadband x-ray source near the Si $K$ edge. By varying the delay between the two laser beams and the intensity of the ns beam, we explore a large thermodynamical domain with densities varying from 1 to 5 g/cm$^3$ and temperatures up to 5 eV. In contrast to normal conditions where silica is a well-known insulator with a wide band gap of 8.9 eV, we find that shocked silica exhibits a pseudogap as a semimetal throughout this thermodynamical domain. This is in quantitative agreement with density functional theory predictions performed using the generalized gradient approximation.
