1. Relation between regional and global systolic function in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy after β-Blocker therapy or revascularization

Abstract

Abstract Background To assess the relationship between improved regional and global myocardial function in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy in response to β-blocker therapy or revascularization. Materials and methods Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) was performed in 32 patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy before and 8 ± 2 months after therapy. Patients were assigned clinically to β-blocker therapy (n = 20) or revascularization (n = 12). CMR at baseline was performed to assess regional and global LV function at rest and under low-dose dobutamine. Wall thickening was analyzed in dysfunctional, adjacent, and remote segments. Follow-up CMR included rest function evaluation. Results Augmentation of wall thickening during dobutamine at baseline was similar in dysfunctional, adjacent and remote segments in both patient groups. Therefore, baseline characteristics were similar for both patient groups. In both patient groups resting LV ejection fraction and end-systolic volume improved significantly (p < 0.05) at follow-up. Stepwise multivariate analysis revealed that improvement in global LV ejection fraction in the β-blocker treated patients was significantly related to improved function of remote myocardium (p < 0.05), whereas in the revascularized patients improved function in dysfunctional and adjacent segments was more pronounced (p < 0.05). Conclusion In patients with chronic ischemic LV dysfunction, β-Blocker therapy or revascularization resulted in a similar improvement of global systolic LV function. However, after β-blocker therapy, improved global systolic function was mainly related to improved contraction of remote myocardium, whereas after revascularization the dysfunctional and adjacent regions contributed predominantly to the improved global systolic function.

Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract

The quantity P_{mu}^{pi}xi, where xi is one of the muon decay parameters and $P_{\mu}^{\pi}$ is the degree of muon polarization in pion decay, has been measured. The value P_{mu}^{pi}xi = 1.0003 +- 0.0006 stat. +- 0.0038 syst. was obtained. This result agrees with previous measurements but is over a factor of two more precise. Abstract

The muon decay parameter delta has been measured by the TWIST collaboration. We find delta = 0.74964 +- 0.00066(stat.) +- 0.00112(syst.), consistent with the Standard Model value of 3/4. This result implies that the product Pmuxi of the muon polarization in pion decay, Pmu, and the muon decay parameter xi falls within the 90% confidence interval 0.9960 < Pmuxi < xi < 1.0040. Abstract

The advent of robotics in schools and universities curricula are preparing students to encompass new didactic fields. This article presents ReFiBot which is an education robot that have been used to increase the technical literacy on robotics and bring more awareness on open science at Wageningen University. The ReFiBot, combines open-source hardware and software, integrated in a chassis made from recycled plastic from fishnets. The ReFiBot was carefully designed to be easily assembled with off-the-shelf electronic parts and programmed using the Arduino IDE. Moreover, a software library is facilitated to ease it adoption in educational activities from any curricula level. The ReFiBot has been mainly used for education but can also be used for research on swarm robotics. The CAD files, components list, software files and tutorial within this contribution will guide the reader through the assemblage and best practices of this circular robotic kit.

Abstract

Although health in children has improved significantly over the last decades, health in adolescence has only slightly improved. Adolescence is an important period in developing mental health problems. A predictor for adolescent mental health problems that is often studied is parental income (objective socioeconomic status), but objective socioeconomic status (SES) appears to be weakly and inconsistently related to mental health problems. Less is known about subjective perceptions of SES and their influence on mental health problems. We examined mental health differences in 14790 Dutch adolescents using measures of objective SES and subjective socioeconomic status (SSS) as measured in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children-studies (HBSC-studies) of 2009 and 2013 to examine the influence of the economic crisis on income and subsequently on mental health problems. We carried out a hierarchical regression analysis. Results showed that SSS was a significant moderator in the relation between objective SES and mental health problems. No significant differences were found when adding a 3-way interaction between objective SES, SSS and HBSC-year. In this study, the difference in mental health problems was not explained by the Great Recession. Economic crisis effects are possibly to be found when comparing other HBSC data collections.

Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the\ud last unknown lepton sector mixing angle y13 by observing ne appearance in a nm beam. It also aims to\ud make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, Dm2\ud 23 and sin2\ud 2y23, via nm\ud disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross-section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the\ud J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex\ud (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. This paper\ud provides a comprehensive review of the instrumentation aspect of the T2K experiment and a summary\ud of the vital information for each subsystem.

Doel van dit onderzoek is om na te gaan of een bemonstering uitgevoerd vóór de teelt van aardappelen betrouwbare informatie verschaft over de aan- of afwezigheid van Meloidogyne chitwoodi (maïswortelknobbelaaltje) en de risico’s op partijbesmettingen. Een bedrijfszekere bemonstering garandeert een goede perceelskeuze waarmee telers een afkeuring van partijen door een voorgeschreven partijonderzoek kunnen minimaliseren of voorkomen.

Abstract

Study of rare decays is an important approach for exploring physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). The branching ratio of the helicity suppressed pion decays, R = , is one of the most accurately calculated decay process involving hadrons and has so far provided the most stringent test of the hypothesis of electron-muon universality in weak interactions. The branching ratio has been calculated in the SM to better than 0.01% accuracy to be R SM = 1.2353(1) × 10 . The PIENU experiment at TRIUMF, which started taking physics data in September 2009, aims to reach an accuracy five times better than the previous experiments, so as to confront the theoretical calculation at the level of ±0.1%. If a deviation from the RSM is found, "new physics" beyond the SM, at potentially very high mass scales (up to 1000 TeV), could be revealed. Alternatively, sensitive constraints on hypotheses can be obtained for interactions involving pseudoscalar or scalar interactions. So far, 4 million π + → e+ νe ue events have been accumulated by PIENU. This paper will outline the physics motivations, describe the apparatus and techniques designed to achieve high precision and present the latest results.

Eind 2004 is door het Hoofdproductschap Akkerbouw (HPA), het Productschap Tuinbouw (PT) en LTO Nederland het initiatief genomen om de aaltjesproblemen gezamenlijk aan te pakken. Hiervoor is het actieplan aaltjesbeheersing gelanceerd. Eén van de projecten binnen dit actieplan was het monitoren van de nulsituatie. Dit project is uitgevoerd door een consortium van Blgg BV, NAK AGRO BV, en PPO-AGV. Binnen het project zijn tussen 2005 en 2006 425 akkerbouwbedrijven grondmonsters genomen. Deze zijn geanalyseerd op de meest bekende plantenparasitaire aaltjes. Daarnaast is aan de deelnemers gevraagd mee te werken aan een enquête over hun bedrijfsvoering en hun ervaringen met aaltjes
