The evaluation of the overlap between the ADOS BOSCC and Standard BOSCC as well as the exploration of child characteristics that may predict change are important steps in consolidating data-driven definitions of "improvement". Participants were seen between 2 and 5 times with Standard BOSCC and ADOS BOSCC observations over the course of early intervention trials (Grzadzinski et al. in J Autism Dev Disord 46:2464, 2016; Kim et al. in Autism 23:5, 2019). Results showed consistency between the Standard BOSCC and ADOS BOSCC, highlighting the utility of both as metrics of change and treatment outcome across contexts. Baseline characteristics may play a role in the tailoring of early intervention to maximize treatment outcome and may offer guidance when determining which outcome measures to use.

While Bitcoin mining's high electricity consumption has traditionally been seen as problematic from an environmental and grid reliability perspective, this article proposes a win-win solution for Bitcoin mining, the environment, and grid reliability by synergizing mining operations with renewable energy projects. Where Bitcoin miners require an abundance of inexpensive electricity, remote renewable energy projects--particularly wind farms--have the potential to produce excess electricity that is either unprofitable or risks grid overload. By implementing overlay zoning with the locational, renewable, and demand-response considerations that this article proposes, policymakers can incentivize electricity-intensive Bitcoin mining operations to co-locate near remote renewable energy projects, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that will support, rather than threaten, United States climate and electricity goals.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often display atypical sensory reactivity within the first years of life, prior to a diagnosis. This study examined sensory reactivity patterns at 14 months, changes from 14 to 23 months, and later ASD severity at 3 to 5 years of age in children (n = 87) at elevated likelihood of ASD. Results indicated that observed hyporeactivity at 14 months and increases from 14 to 23 months were related to higher ASD severity during the preschool years. Parent report of hyperreactivity at 14 months was associated with higher ASD severity in the RRB domain during the preschool years. Early hypo and hyperreactivity may predict later severity of ASD and aid in subtyping and developing individualized treatments.

The work of the French anthropologist-cum-philosopher Bruno Latour has influenced a wide variety of disciplines in the past three decades. Yet, Latour has had little noticeable effect within development studies, including those sub-fields where it might be reasonable to expect affinity, such as the anthropology of development. The first half of this article outlines some core aspects of Latour's oeuvre as they relate to development and anthropology, particularly focusing on the post-development critique. Latour's approach to constructivism and translation, his analytical commitment to ‘keeping the social flat’ and his distribution of agency offer novel ways of maintaining some of the strengths of post-development without falling prey to some of its weaknesses. The second half of the article explores the potential for a Latour-inspired theory of development that may provide fruitful avenues for scholarship and practice beyond post-development, emphasizing materialism, relationality and hybridity.

In 1975, the Ugandan state established an Economic Crimes Tribunal to investigate and penalize smuggling, hoarding, overcharging, and other commercial malfeasance. In the coming years, innumerable Ugandans were arrested and charged with contravening the state's economic regulations. Prior observers have seen this as another instance of a capricious state, but in this article, I demonstrate the popular investment in economic regulation. Ugandans demanded better stewardship of money and things because they were aghast at the ungovernable world of commodities. For one thing, the inaccessibility of so-called "essential commodities" — sugar and salt, preeminently — impeded ethical expectations surrounding social reproduction, hospitality, and masculine respectability. More troubling, essential commodities were not completely unavailable; rather, they were available on exclusionary and confusing terms. Relative deprivation was more upsetting than absolute scarcity because it offended a sense of consumptive entitlement. As a result, it was not only the state that accused citizens of economic crimes. There were widespread accusations in which allegation and denunciation circulated among neighbors, families, and bureaucrats in an urgent effort to discipline commodities and people. The African experience with mobile telephony has been extolled as a defining moment in the continent’s contemporary economic, social, and political development. Yet SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) registration schemes are threatening to throttle the technology’s developmental potential. These mandates, which require the registration of identity information to activate a mobile SIM card, are fast becoming universal in Africa, with little to no public debate about the wider social or political effects. Whereas some authors have explored the motivations behind these drives, as well as their potential economic impacts, this paper focuses its critique on the broader diversity of implications of this regulatory transformation. Viewing SIM registration through a lens that combines surveillance studies and information & communication technologies for development, it examines elements of resistance across a range of actors, as well as other emerging effects like access barriers, linkages to financialization, and Africa’s budding mobile surveillance society.

In the past few years Kenya has received widespread acclaim as a rising digital power on the African continent. Terms like ‘Silicon Savannah’ are now used to describe the success and excitement around Kenya’s ICT industry, with Safaricom’s M-Pesa leading the way. But this progress did not arise accidentally; it took committed political, bureaucratic and corporate leadership, including the reform of trade, tax and financial rules. Yet new regulations may threaten the success of Kenyan ICT, especially for those most in need of its opportunities. This post explores how one of these new developments - the case of SIM registration - may be inadvertently diminishing the positive aims of mobile phones and financial inclusion (though others, like the drive to shut-off counterfeit phones deserveattention, too).
