18. SiN/VO2/SiN Sandwich‐Based Resonant Waveguide Grating to Produce Thermally Activated Optical Components.

Abstract

The insulator‐to‐metal transition (IMT) of vanadium dioxide (VO2) at ≈68 °C enables a variety of optical applications, including switching and modulation, and tuning of optical resonators. This work designs and demonstrates a novel thermally activated optical switch consisting of a SiN/VO2/SiN multilayer sandwich structure with an AMONIL‐based grating with a reduced transition temperature of 47 °C. The optical switching in the multilayer is due to the IMT of the VO2‐embedded layer. Here, the asymmetrical TE1 mode exhibiting a quasi‐zero electric field in the center of the multilayer waveguide is excited in the resonant waveguide grating (RWG) structure under normal incidence via the AMONIL‐based grating printed on top, leading to high resonant transmittance (75%) at room temperature. Increasing the temperature to more than 47 °C causes VO2 to undergo an insulator‐to‐metal transition accompanied by optical modifications in the IR region, completely canceling the resonance effect, while reducing the transmittance to 30%. Further, the modeling results aimed at optimizing the design of the experimental structure. These results demonstrate good performance of the proposed design and pave the way to fabricate VO2‐based optical switches for photonics applications including lasers, sensors, and detectors, in which external stimuli such as heat affect the transmittance or reflectance spectrum. Abstract

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) with an insulator-to-metal (IMT) transition (∼68 °C) is considered a very attractive thermochromic material for smart window applications. Indeed, tailoring and understanding the thermochromic and surface properties at lower temperatures can enable room-temperature applications. The effect of W doping on the thermochromic, surface, and nanostructure properties of VO2 thin film was investigated in the present proof. W-doped VO2 thin films with different W contents were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using V/W (+O2) and V2O5/W multilayers. Rapid thermal annealing at 400–450 °C under oxygen flow was performed to crystallize the as-deposited films. The thermochromic, surface chemistry, structural, and morphological properties of the thin films obtained were investigated. The results showed that the V5+ was more surface sensitive and W distribution was homogeneous in all samples. Moreover, the V2O5 acted as a W diffusion barrier during the annealing stage, whereas the V+O2 environment favored W surface diffusion. The phase transition temperature gradually decreased with increasing W content with a high efficiency of −26 °C per at. % W. For the highest doping concentration of 1.7 at. %, VO2 showed room-temperature transition (26 °C) with high luminous transmittance (62%), indicating great potential for optical applications. Abstract

Femtosecond laser texturing is a promising surface functionalization technology to improve the integration and durability of dental and orthopedic implants. Four different surface topographies were obtained on titanium-6aluminum-4vanadium plates by varying laser processing parameters and strategies: surfaces presenting nanostructures such as laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) and 'spikes', associated or not with more complex multiscale geometries combining micro-pits, nanostructures and stretches of polished areas. After sterilization by heat treatment, LIPSS and spikes were characterized to be highly hydrophobic, whereas the original polished surfaces remained hydrophilic. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) grown on simple nanostructured surfaces were found to spread less with an increased motility (velocity, acceleration, tortuosity), while on the complex surfaces, hMSCs decreased their migration when approaching the micro-pits and preferentially positioned their nucleus inside them. Moreover, focal adhesions of hMSCs were notably located on polished zones rather than on neighboring nanostructured areas where the protein adsorption was lower. All these observations indicated that hMSCs were spatially controlled and mechanically strained by the laser-induced topographies. The nanoscale structures influence surface wettability and protein adsorption and thus influence focal adhesions formation and finally induce shape-based mechanical constraints on cells, known to promote osteogenic differentiation., La texturation au laser femtoseconde est une technologie de fonctionnalisation de surface prometteuse pour améliorer l'intégration et la durabilité des implants dentaires et orthopédiques. Quatre topographies de surface différentes ont été obtenues sur des plaques de titane-6aluminium-4vanadium en faisant varier les paramètres et stratégies de traitement laser: des surfaces présentant des nanostructures telles que des structures de surface périodiques induites par laser (LIPSS) et des `` pointes '', associées ou non à des géométries multi-échelles plus complexes combinant des micro - des fosses, des nanostructures et des étendues de zones polies. Après stérilisation par traitement thermique, les LIPSS et les pointes ont été caractérisés comme étant hautement hydrophobes, tandis que les surfaces polies d'origine restaient hydrophiles. Les cellules souches mésenchymateuses humaines (hMSC) cultivées sur de simples surfaces nanostructurées se sont moins propagées avec une motilité accrue (vitesse, accélération, tortuosité), tandis que sur les surfaces complexes, les hMSC ont diminué leur migration à l'approche des micro-fosses et ont positionné préférentiellement leur noyau. à l'intérieur d'eux. De plus, les adhérences focales des hMSC étaient notamment localisées sur des zones polies plutôt que sur des zones nanostructurées voisines où l'adsorption des protéines était plus faible. Toutes ces observations ont indiqué que les hMSC étaient contrôlés spatialement et mécaniquement sollicités par les topographies induites par laser. Les structures nanométriques influencent la mouillabilité de surface et l'adsorption des protéines et influencent ainsi la formation d'adhérences focales et induisent finalement des contraintes mécaniques basées sur la forme des cellules, connues pour favoriser la différenciation ostéogénique.

Abstract

Graphene-based materials are widely studied to enable significant improvements in electroanalytical devices requiring new generations of robust, sensitive and low-cost electrodes. In this paper, we present a direct one-step route to synthetize a functional nitrogen-doped graphene film onto a Ni-covered silicon electrode substrate heated at high temperature, by pulsed laser deposition of carbon in the presence of a surrounding nitrogen atmosphere, with no post-deposition transfer of the film. With the ferrocene methanol system, the functionalized electrode exhibits excellent reversibility, close to the theoretical value of 59 mV, and very high sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide oxidation. Our electroanalytical results were correlated with the composition and nanoarchitecture of the N-doped graphene film containing 1.75 at % of nitrogen and identified as a few-layer defected and textured graphene film containing a balanced mixture of graphitic-N and pyrrolic-N chemical functions. The absence of nitrogen dopant in the graphene film considerably degraded some electroanalytical performances. Heat treatment extended beyond the high temperature graphene synthesis did not significantly improve any of the performances. This work contributes to a better understanding of the electrochemical mechanisms of doped graphene-based electrodes obtained by a direct and controlled synthesis process.

Abstract

International audience; A promising way to tailor the chemical and electronic properties of graphene layers is the doping of the carbon honeycomb using heteroatoms such as nitrogen or boron. In the domain of electrochemical sensor, this may allow to control both conductivity and chemical activity. Nitrogen doped graphene was produced by the thermal annealing of nitrogen doped amorphous carbon (a-C:N) deposited either on a nickel thin film on a silicon substrate or between the silicon substrate and the nickel catalyst layer. The a-C:N thin films were produced by femtosecond pulsed laser ablation of graphite in nitrogen, while the nickel thin film was thermally evaporated. The nitrogen content and bonding configuration in the produced films were evaluated by XPS spectroscopy, with a particular attention to the ratio of pyridinic and pyrrolic bondings, the former being more interesting to control the conductivity and chemical activity of the film. The structure of the graphene was studied through microRaman spectroscopy using Raman mapping. Those results were compared to the electrochemical properties of the produced N-doped graphene films, studied through cyclic voltammetry using ferrocene as a redox probe. Abstract

La mission du groupement est de fédérer les connaissances dans les domaines de la mécanique des fluides et matériaux biologiques au sein d'INSIS (sections 09-10-28) en interaction avec la biologie (INSB) et la physique (INP). Il vise à regrouper les chercheurs travaillant dans le domaine de la biomécanique en synergie avec des biologistes et des cliniciens. Une quarantaine d'équipes participent actuellement au GDR. 47. Micro–Nanostructured TiN Thin Film: Synthesis from a Photo-Patternable TiO2Sol–Gel Coating and Rapid Thermal Nitridation

Abstract

The miniaturization of optical components to control and manipulate light amplitude, phase, and polarization requires micro- to nanostructured metasurfaces that provide resonant light–matter interactions to exploit optical properties in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) range (plasmonic resonances, wavelength filtering, etc.). Such metasurfaces sometimes need to be implemented under hard-use conditions, including high temperatures and strong field confinement. Transition-metal nitrides, like titanium nitride (TiN), are ideal materials to achieve such properties, but TiN’s hardness and chemical inertness make patterning difficult. Here, we present an innovative direct fabrication process to easily synthesize a micro–nanostructured TiN thin film. The technological process is based on a direct photo-patternable titanium oxide TiO2sol–gel layer converted into TiN with a rapid thermal nitridation process. The nanoarchitecture and chemical composition of TiO2and TiN films were investigated by ultraviolet (UV)–visible–infrared (IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). We obtained micro–nanotextured crystallized TiN surfaces in a significantly shorter time than with conventional nitridation processes. Due to the sol–gel approach, this work also significantly extends the chances of obtaining TiN-based metasurfaces on various substrates (glasses, plastics, etc.) in complex shapes (non-planar-based surfaces), for demanding photonic applications in the future.

International audience; Cette étude présente une nouvelle méthodologie visant à augmenter le temps d'usinage simulé en coupe orthogonale .Le but est d'étudier ultérieurement l'évolution de l'usure des outils de coupe dans le cas de l'usinage de l'acier 42CD4. Un modèle lagrangien est donc développé sous le code de calcul ABAQUS simulant la formation du copeau. Une approche baptisée de « modélisation verticale » est développée dans le but d'augmenter le temps de coupe simulé tout en gardant un temps de calcul CPU modéré.

Abstract

Amorphous carbon nitride (a-C:N) material has attracted much attention in research and development. Recently, it has become a more promising electrode material than conventional carbon based electrodes in electrochemical and biosensor applications. Nitrogen containing amorphous carbon (a-C:N) thin films have been synthesized by femtosecond pulsed laser deposition (fs-PLD) coupled with plasma assistance through Direct Current (DC) bias power supply. During the deposition process, various nitrogen pressures (0 to 10 Pa) and DC bias (0 to ¿ 350 V) were used in order to explore a wide range of nitrogen content into the films. The structure and chemical composition of the films have been studied by using Raman spectroscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Increasing the nitrogen pressure or adding a DC bias induced an increase of the N content, up to 21 at.%. Nitrogen content increase induces a higher sp2 character of the film. However DC bias has been found to increase the film structural disorder, which was detrimental to the electrochemical properties. Indeed the electrochemical measurements, investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), demonstrated that a-C:N film with moderate nitrogen content (10 at.%) exhibited the best behavior, in terms of reversibility and electron transfer kinetics. Electrochemical grafting from diazonium salts was successfully achieved on this film, with a surface coverage of covalently bonded molecules close to the dense packed monolayer of ferrocene molecules. Such a film may be a promising electrode material in electrochemical detection of electroactive pollutants on bare film, and of biopathogen molecules after surface grafting of the specific affinity receptor.
