Introduction: While extant research has looked at parole and its various actors as an institution, few studies recount the parole experience from the perspective of parolees. Additionally, despite the prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) within the criminal justice system, research that assesses the additional challenges this population faces throughout parole supervision is even scarcer., Methods: To address this gap, we analyze in-depth qualitative interviews (n = 51) conducted with reentering men with SUDs as they navigate parole in Pennsylvania. Three independent coders identified all narratives relating to a broad theme of "parole and probation experiences." The authors then completed iterative rounds of more fine-grained independent coding within that theme., Results: Our results emphasize that SUDs present a significant barrier to reentry success, and the tension of surveillance and revocation is amplified for those enduring simultaneous reentry and recovery. Importantly, our respondents regard parole officers more positively than they view parole as an institution, yet this perception of officers does not equate to provision of reintegration and recovery support. Respondents perceive that parole presents unnecessary additional hurdles to their reentry success, and their perceived risk level impacts their surveillance intensity., Conclusions: The information gleaned through inclusion of perspectives from those enduring parole supervision calls for a critical assessment of current parole practices. Three concepts for the application of multi-extreme conditions under in situ neutron scattering are described here. The first concept is a neutron diamond anvil cell made from a non-magnetic alloy. It is shrunk in size to fit existing magnets and future magnet designs and is designed for best pressure stability upon cooling. This will allow for maximum pressures above 10 GPa to be applied simultaneously with (steady-state) high magnetic field and (ultra-)low temperature. Additionally, an implementation of miniature coils for neutron diamond cells is presented for pulsed-field applications. The second concept presents a set-up for laser-heating a neutron diamond cell using a defocused CO 2 laser. Cell, anvil, and gasket stability will be achieved through stroboscopic measurements and maximum temperatures of 1500 K are anticipated at pressures to the megabar. The third concept presents a hybrid levitator to enable measurements of solids and liquids at temperatures in excess of 4000 K. This will be accomplished by a combination of bulk induction and surface laser heating and hyperbaric conditions to reduce evaporation rates. The potential for deployment of these multi-extreme environments within this first instrument suite of the Second Target Station is described with a special focus on VERDI, PIONEER, CENTAUR, and CHESS. Furthermore, considerations for deployment on future instruments, such as the one proposed as TITAN, are discussed. Overall, the development of these multi-extremes at the Second Target Station, but also beyond, will be highly advantageous for future experimentation and will give access to parameter space previously not possible for neutron scattering.

Through a series of x-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy diamond anvil cell experiments, combined with density functional theory calculations, we explore the dense CH_{4}-H_{2} system. We find that pressures as low as 4.8 GPa can stabilize CH_{4}(H_{2})_{2} and (CH_{4})_{2}H_{2}, with the latter exhibiting extreme hardening of the intramolecular vibrational mode of H_{2} units within the structure. On further compression, a unique structural composition, (CH_{4})_{3}(H_{2})_{25}, emerges. This novel structure holds a vast amount of molecular hydrogen and represents the first compound to surpass 50 wt % H_{2}. These compounds, stabilized by nuclear quantum effects, persist over a broad pressure regime, exceeding 160 GPa.

Diamond and graphite are fundamental sources of carbon in the upper mantle, and their reactivity with H 2 -rich fluids present at these depths may represent the key to unravelling deep abiotic hydrocarbon formation. We demonstrate an unexpected high reactivity between carbons' most common allotropes, diamond and graphite, with hydrogen at conditions comparable with those in the Earth's upper mantle along subduction zone thermal gradients. Between 0.5-3 GPa and at temperatures as low as 300 °C, carbon reacts readily with H 2 yielding methane (CH 4 ), whilst at higher temperatures (500 °C and above), additional light hydrocarbons such as ethane (C 2 H 6 ) emerge. These results suggest that the interaction between deep H 2 -rich fluids and reduced carbon minerals may be an efficient mechanism for producing abiotic hydrocarbons at the upper mantle., (© 2021. Hydrogen bond networks play a crucial role in biomolecules and molecular materials such as ices. How these networks react to pressure directs their properties at extreme conditions. We have studied one of the simplest hydrogen bond formers, hydrogen chloride, from crystallization to metallization, covering a pressure range of more than 2.5 million atmospheres. Following hydrogen bond symmetrization, we identify a previously unknown phase by the appearance of new Raman modes and changes to x-ray diffraction patterns that contradict previous predictions. On further compression, a broad Raman band supersedes the well-defined excitations of phase V, despite retaining a crystalline chlorine substructure. We propose that this mode has its origin in proton (H + ) mobility and disorder. Above 100 GPa, the optical bandgap closes linearly with extrapolated metallization at 240(10) GPa. Our findings suggest that proton dynamics can drive changes in these networks even at very high densities.

Earth-abundant antimony trisulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ), or simply antimonite, is a promising material for capturing natural energies like solar power and heat flux. The layered structure, held up by weak van-der Waals forces, induces anisotropic behaviors in carrier transportation and thermal expansion. Here, we used stress as mechanical stimuli to destabilize the layered structure and observed the structural phase transition to a three-dimensional (3D) structure. We combined in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to study the evolution of structure and bandgap width up to 20.1 GPa. The optical band gap energy of Sb 2 S 3 followed a two-step hierarchical sequence at approximately 4 and 11 GPa. We also revealed that the first step of change is mainly caused by the redistribution of band states near the conduction band maximum. The second transition is controlled by an isostructural phase transition, with collapsed layers and the formation of a higher coordinated bulky structure. The band gap reduced from 1.73 eV at ambient to 0.68 eV at 15 GPa, making it a promising thermoelectric material under high pressure., (© 2021. The Author(s).)

The chalcogens are known to react with one another to form interchalcogens, which exhibit a diverse range of bonding and conductive behavior due to the difference in electronegativity between the group members. Through a series of high-pressure diamond anvil experiments combined with density functional theory calculations, we report the synthesis of an S-Se hydride. At pressures above 4 GPa we observe the formation of a single solid composed of both H 2 Se and H 2 S molecular units. Further compression in a hydrogen medium leads to the formation of an alloyed compound (H 2 S x Se 1- x ) 2 H 2 , after which there is a sequence of pressure-induced phase transitions associated with the arrested rotation of molecules. At pressures above 50 GPa, there is a symmetrization of hydrogen bonds concomitantly with a closing band gap and increased reflectivity of the compound, indicative of a transition to a metallic state.

Mixtures of ammonia and water are major components of the "hot ice" mantle regions of icy planets. The ammonia-rich ammonia hemihydrate (AHH) plays a pivotal role as it precipitates from water-rich mixtures under pressure. It has been predicted to form ionic high-pressure structures, with fully disintegrated water molecules. Utilizing Raman spectroscopy measurements up to 123 GPa and first-principles calculations, we report the spontaneous ionization of AHH under compression. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that molecular AHH begins to transform into an ionic state at 26 GPa and then above ∼69  GPa transforms into the fully ionic P3[over ¯]m1 phase, AHH-III, characterized as ammonium oxide (NH_{4}^{+})_{2}O^{2-}.

When compressed in a matrix of solid hydrogen, many metals form compounds with increasingly high hydrogen contents. At high density, hydrogenic sublattices can emerge, which may act as low-dimensional analogues of atomic hydrogen. We show that at high pressures and temperatures, ruthenium forms polyhydride species that exhibit intriguing hydrogen substructures with counterintuitive electronic properties. Ru 3 H 8 is synthesized from RuH in H 2 at 50 GPa and at temperatures in excess of 1000 K, adopting a cubic structure with short H-H distances. When synthesis pressures are increased above 85 GPa, we observe RuH 4 which crystallizes in a remarkable structure containing corner-sharing H 6 octahedra. Calculations indicate this phase is semimetallic at 100 GPa.

Diatomic elemental solids are highly compressible due to the weak interactions between molecules. However, as the density increases the intra- and intermolecular distances become comparable, leading to a range of phenomena, such as structural transformation, molecular dissociation, amorphization, and metallisation. Here we report, following the crystallization of chlorine at 1.15(30) GPa into an ordered orthorhombic structure (oC8), the existence of a mixed-molecular structure (mC8, 130(10)-241(10) GPa) and the concomitant observation of a continuous band gap closure, indicative of a transformation into a metallic molecular form around 200(10) GPa. The onset of dissociation of chlorine is identified by the observation of the incommensurate structure (i-oF4) above 200(10) GPa, before finally adopting a monatomic form (oI2) above 256(10) GPa.

Transition-metal nitrides have applications in a range of technological fields. Recent experiments have shown that new nitrogen-bearing compounds can be accessed through a combination of high temperatures and pressures, revealing a richer chemistry than was previously assumed. Here, we show that at pressures above 50 GPa and temperatures greater than 1500 K  elemental copper reacts with nitrogen, forming copper diazenide (CuN 2 ). Through a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations we have explored the stability and electronic structure of CuN 2 . We find that the novel compound remains stable down to 25 GPa before decomposing to its constituent elements. Electronic structure calculations show that CuN 2 is metallic and exhibits partially filled N 2 antibonding orbitals, leading to an ambiguous electronic structure between Cu + /Cu 2+ . This leads to weak Cu-N bonds and the lowest bulk modulus observed for any transition-metal nitride.

Through a series of Raman spectroscopy studies, we investigate the behavior of hydrogen-helium and hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures at high pressure across a wide range of concentrations. We find that there is no evidence of chemical association or increased miscibility of hydrogen and helium in the solid state up to pressures of 250 GPa at 300 K. In contrast, we observe the formation of concentration-dependent N_{2}-H_{2} van der Waals solids, which react to form N-H bonded compounds above 50 GPa. Through this combined study, we can demonstrate that the recently reported chemical association of H_{2}-He can be attributed to significant N_{2} contamination and subsequent formation of N_{2}-H_{2} compounds.

Although the hydrogenous analogue of the D2-D2O system has been well explored in the regimes above 1 GPa, and below 0.2 GPa, there have been very few studies in the region between these pressures. The recent discovery in the range 0.5-0.7 GPa of a new phase, C0, that possesses a new clathrate structure with a new H2O network, along with the proposal of another structure stable at similar conditions, has prompted further studies of the hydrogen water system in this intermediate pressure region. Here, we report the results of neutron-diffraction experiments that observed transitions from metastable to stable structures in the D2-D2O system around 0.2-0.3 GPa between 130 K and 280 K. These metastable structures were observed in the stability region of the sII hydrogen hydrate clathrate and computational studies of their relative enthalpies suggest that transition sequence observed is in line with Ostwald's 'Rule of Stages'.

In situ high-pressure high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction studies of the cobalt-hydrogen system reveal the direct synthesis of both the binary cobalt hydride (CoH) and a novel cobalt dihydride (CoH 2 ). We observe the formation of fcc CoH at pressures of 4 GPa, which persists to pressures of 45 GPa. At this pressure, we see the emergence with time of a further expanded fcc lattice, which we identify as CoH 2 , where the hydrogen atoms occupy the tetrahedral vacancies. We have explored alternative synthesis routes of CoH 2 and can lower the synthesis pressure to 35 GPa by the application of high temperature. CoH 2 is stable to at least 55 GPa and decomposes into CoH below 10 GPa, releasing molecular hydrogen before further decomposing completely into its constituent elements below 3 GPa. As a first-row transition metal, cobalt has a relatively lower mass than other hydride-forming transition metals, and as a result, CoH 2 has a high hydrogen content of 3.3 wt. % and a volumetric hydrogen density of 214 g/l.

We present full in situ structural solutions of carbon dioxide hydrate-II and hydrogen hydrate C 0 at elevated pressures using neutron and X-ray diffraction. We find both hydrates adopt a common water network structure. The structure exhibits several features not previously found in hydrates; most notably it is chiral and has large open spiral channels along which the guest molecules are free to move. It has a network that is unrelated to any experimentally known ice, silica, or zeolite network but is instead related to two Zintl compounds. Both hydrates are found to be stable in electronic structure calculations, with hydration ratios in very good agreement with experiment.

The disordered-molecular-alloy phase (DMA) of ammonia hydrates [J. S. Loveday and R. J. Nelmes, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4329 (1999)] is unique in that it has substitutional disorder of ammonia and water over the molecular sites of a body centred cubic lattice. Whilst this structure has been observed in ammonia di- and mono-hydrate compositions, it has not been conclusively observed in the ammonia hemihydrate system. This work presents investigations of the structural behaviour of ammonia hemihydrate as a function of P and T. The indications of earlier studies [Ma et al. RSC Adv. 2, 4290 (2012)] that the DMA structure could be produced by compression of ammonia hemihydrate above 20 GPa at ambient temperature are confirmed. In addition, the DMA structure was found to form reversibly both from the melt, and on warming of ammonia hemihydrate phase-II, in the pressure range between 4 and 8 GPa. The route used to make the DMA structure from ammonia mono- and di-hydrates--compression at 170 K to 6 GPa followed by warming to ambient temperature--was found not to produce the DMA structure for ammonia hemihydrate. These results provide the first strong evidence that DMA is a thermodynamically stable form. A high-pressure phase diagram for ammonia hemihydrate is proposed which has importance for planetary modelling.

Reverse genetics approaches that enable the generation of recombinant influenza A viruses entirely from plasmids are invaluable for studies on virus replication, morphogenesis, pathogenesis, or transmission. Furthermore, influenza virus reverse genetics is now critical for the development of new vaccines for this human and animal pathogen. Periodically, influenza gene segments are unstable within plasmids in bacteria. The PB2 gene segment of a highly pathogenic avian H5 influenza virus A/Turkey/Ontario/7732/1966 (Ty/Ont) was unstable in commonly available cloning plasmids (e.g., pcDNA3.1/V5-His-TOPO) and in standard influenza virus reverse genetics plasmids (e.g., pHH21), which contain high copy origins of replication. Thus, a low-copy influenza reverse genetics plasmid (pGJ3C3) was developed to enable rapid cloning of unstable influenza A virus genes using ligation-independent recombination-based cloning. The unstable Ty/Ont PB2 gene segment was efficiently cloned using the pGJ3C3 plasmid and this clone was used to rescue a recombinant Ty/Ont virus. This low copy reverse genetics plasmid will be useful for cloning other unstable segments of influenza A viruses in order to rescue recombinant viruses, which will facilitate basic studies and vaccine seed stock production., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Pandemic influenza A viruses that emerge from animal reservoirs are inevitable. Therefore, rapid genomic analysis and creation of vaccines are vital. We developed a multisegment reverse transcription-PCR (M-RTPCR) approach that simultaneously amplifies eight genomic RNA segments, irrespective of virus subtype. M-RTPCR amplicons can be used for high-throughput sequencing and/or cloned into modified reverse-genetics plasmids via regions of sequence identity. We used these procedures to rescue a contemporary H3N2 virus and a swine origin H1N1 virus directly from human swab specimens. Together, M-RTPCR and the modified reverse-genetics plasmids that we designed streamline the creation of vaccine seed stocks (9 to 12 days).

This paper describes the characteristics of the 450 residents of all statutory residential homes for the elderly within five local government districts in Northern Ireland. The residents are described in terms of demographic detail, prevalence of dementia and prevalence of problem behaviour. Results are comparable with those of other studies. There are more females, fewer are married and more are over the age of 75 years than would be predicted from the general population. Roughly half scored within the dementia range, with 56% of those over 85 years being demented. More than 33% had some degree of incontinence, 9% were immobile and 10% were physically aggressive at least once a week. Five percent were wanderers and nearly all residents required help with bathing.
