To ensure specificity, loading of the sense strand of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) into RISC must be inhibited. We show here that siRNAs with 5′- and 6′-morpholino LNA residues or 6′-OH-LNA at the 5′ terminus of a fully phosphodiester sense strand resulted in metabolically stable siRNAs with a potency and a duration of action in mice that were greater than those of an siRNA in which the 5′ terminus of the sense strand has two terminal phosphorothioate linkages and regular LNA.

The purpose of this study was to examine the cathartic and therapeutic effects of written essays and therapy interviews about traumatic events over four successive days as compared with a control writing about trivial events. The subjects were 102 male and female college students. A content analysis showed that both treatment groups expressed more positive and negative emotion than the control as well as showed more cognitive, self-esteem, and behavior changes. Positive emotion, cognitive changes, and self-esteem changes increased over days while negative emotion decreased. Pain and upset about the topic decreased over days for both treatment groups. A post-experimental questionnaire showed that both treatment groups felt more positive about their topics and themselves. On the other hand, there were dramatic differences in pre- to post-session mood with written expression consistently increasing negative mood and decreasing positive mood.

The stability of cloning vectors belonging to incompatibility groups P and Q was investigated in Rhizobium meliloti and Bradyrhizobium japonicum. The IncQ plasmids pKT230 and pKT231 could not be established in B. japonicum CJ1. These plasmids were readily transferred into R. meliloti CM2. Under non-selective aerobic growth conditions, plasmid pKT231 segregated from R. meliloti CM2 at a rate of 2% per generation compared to a rate of < 1% per generation for the IncP-1 plasmid pRK290. The segregation rate of plasmid pRK290 was also shown to increase when it contained a 40-kb DNA insert. Under free living nitrogen-fixing conditions the segregation rate of the P-1 plasmids from B. japonicum was estimated to be 10% per generation which is significantly higher than the rate observed under aerobic growth conditions. The implications of these findings are discussed.

We wish to report this case for the following reasons: The patient presented a diagnostic problem on admission. Few cases of thrombosis of the renal artery have been reported in the literature. The clinical manifestations of renal artery thrombosis are as yet not well recognized and therefore not thought of. Early recognition of the syndrome and proper therapy may prevent extensive renal pathologic changes.While many cases of renal infarction due to emboli1 and thrombosis of the small branches of the renal artery secondary to nephritis,2 trauma3 and periarteritis4 have been reported, we found in the literature only an incomplete description of the syndrome, reported by one of us,5 and3 cases of fatal thrombosis of the renal artery6 associated with general vascular disease.There is no complete description, as far as we can find, in any textbook or periodical of the clinical manifestations
