Cyberbullying is a harmful practice to which schools must respond. Australia does not have a cyberbullying-specific law, so schools navigate their responses within a range of laws not created for the online world, nor for youth. In this study, the murky legal environment of youth cyberbullying was problematised from perspectives found within two Australian secondary school communities. School leaders, key staff, teachers, students, and parents participated in interviews or focus groups held to gather their views about whether a new cyberbullying-specific law was needed to help reduce youth cyberbullying. A thematic analysis found three themes: that an educational approach was favoured over a legal one; that current laws mediated a constrained discussion about the benefit a new cyberbullying-specific law would have for schools and that there were school-identified unmet spaces where the law should be contributing better solutions to youth cyberbullying. Legal responses with implications for reducing youth cyberbullying are discussed.

Background: Cyberbullying is a significant problem for young people and secondary schools are the main institutions expected to address it. School anti-bullying measures have only modestly reduced the problem to date. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the perspectives of members within the school community regarding their actions to reduce cyberbullying. Method: School stakeholders were recruited from two large independent high schools in Australia. Overall, four school leaders, two key personnel with roles in cyberbullying prevention, and two parents participated in semi-structured interviews, while two groups of Year 9 teachers, and four groups of Year 9 students (aged 13–15 years) participated in focus groups. Interview and focus group protocols were developed to gather views about prevention and intervention measures for cyberbullying in the stakeholders’ schools. Copies of anti-cyberbullying policies and documents were also collected for review. Analysis: A thematic content analysis was conducted on 14 stakeholder transcripts from interviews and focus groups, and school policy documents were reviewed for anti-bullying components. The distal systems of a social-ecological framework were used to frame a wider view of school efforts to prevent and intervene in cyberbullying. Findings: The content analysis and review showed that school actions were reflective of evidence-based best practice. However, despite actions towards making students safe from cyberbullying, stakeholders were left questioning why these incidents were still observed. The analysis revealed that the continued presence of cyberbullying was not simply attributable to ineffective school practices, but rather from societal influences. Three macrosystem themes were identified from the data: the culture of technology; the legal framework; and the media portrayal of cyberbullying. These macrosystem influences could be seen impacting four school exosystems (i.e. communities of school practice): the parent community, the organisational community, the support and advice community, and commercial communities of schools. Conclusion: The macrosystems and exosystems of schools are influencing school actions, with implications for the reduction of student cyberbullying.

Bullying is a perplexing and persistent problem with negative consequences for all involved. Schools are assigned considerable responsibility for the management of bullying because of its prevalence amongst youth. Despite considerable efforts over decades to curtail bullying through the use of anti-bullying policies and other school-based interventions, the rates of young people who frequently bully has not decreased significantly. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a relational and affirming conversational method that strengthens an individual's motivation and commitment to change, overcoming ambivalence toward the problem. The aim of the current study was to provide preliminary insight into the feasibility of incorporating MI into student service repertoires for addressing bullying. Ten staff participants from six secondary schools, who had roles in bullying intervention within their respective schools, were offered training in MI and invited to use and monitor this method in their practice as an intervention for students who perpetrate bullying. Results indicated a number factors which influenced the uptake of MI in schools. Facilitators enabling the use of MI included practitioner's professional background, administrative support, training and implementation of MI. Barriers to the use of MI included time pressure and administrative expectations, school roles and system limitations, and preconceptions and the stigma of bullying.

Religious and spiritual facets of life seem to be important for psychological wellbeing of sex addicted individuals participating in self-help groups. The aim of this study was verification that in a sample of members of Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) from Poland religiosity and spirituality are important factors for hope and spirituality directly influence hope being mediator between faith as well as religious practices and hope. The sample consisted of 30 participants of SLAA groups from Poland. The following tools were used: Herth Hope Index (HHI), Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSORFQ), Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES), and two one scales regarding attending at mass and praying. Using multiple regression analysis confirmed that spiritual experiences mediate between religious faith as well as prayer and hope. It means that among SLAA participants relationship between religiosity and hope is indirect. It was proven that in a sample of sex addicted individuals participating in selfhelp groups higher level of religious faith and more frequent prayer has a positive impact on spiritual experiences, which in turn improve hope. Implications for future research as well as treatment of sex addiction are discussed.

Identifying and using preferred items and activities to increase motivation and participation of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been an important and frequently used intervention strategy. Preferred objects, typically identified through a preference assessment, are most frequently used during instruction as reinforcers. These objects may be offered contingent upon a correct response or following a set period of work or may be made available continuously by incorporating them into the learning task. This alternating treatment design study examined the effects of offering preferred items during a word-learning task on learning and on-task behaviour under 2 conditions: following the completion of a set of learning trials (sequential) or continuously during a set of learning trials (embedded). Participants were 3 children with ASD aged 3–5 years. Results showed that children were more on task when preferred items were embedded, but the sequential condition led to superior learning of target behaviours for 2 of the children. Implications of using preferred items to enhance learning and on-task behaviour are discussed.

Parent and teacher ratings on the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist were compared to determine its reliability for assessing challenging behaviour in young children with developmental disabilities. Twenty-four boys and eight girls aged 20 to 72 months (mean age = 51 months) were assessed independently by a parent and teacher using the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist. There were no significant differences between parent and teacher ratings on any of the five subscales. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients between parent and teacher ratings for each of the five subscales ranged from 0.50 to 0.83 (mean = 0.62). All correlations were significant (p < 0.01). Confirmatory factor analyses generated item loadings consistent with the original factor structure of the ABC and similar component loadings for parents and teachers. These results suggest the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist can provide a reliable assessment of challenging behaviour when used by parents and teachers of young children with developmental disabilities.

Two studies were conducted on teaching children with Rett syndrome to request preferred objects using aided communication. In Study 1, two children were taught to request preferred objects by selecting the generalized symbol "WANT" from a communication board. Intervention consisted of differential reinforcement, verbal, gesture, and physical prompting. With intervention, one child showed a steady increase in the percentage of independent requests to the 80 to 100% range. Although the other child never obtained a similarly high level of performance, she did become more consistent during intervention. Study 2 involved two other children who failed to show progress during the initial generalized request training. For these children, the response requirements and intervention procedures were modified. One child was taught an explicit request for a single preferred item and the other child was taught to operate a switch to access music. With these modifications, the children's responses increased. The studies provide a preliminary demonstration of teaching aided communication to children with Rett syndrome.

This study examined the effects of tactile stimulation on self-injurious behaviour (SIB) in a 10-year-old boy with developmental disabilities. SIB occurred at high rates during unstructured play, suggesting an automatic reinforcement, sensory stimulation function. Noncontingent application of an alternative source of tactile stimulation produced only modest reductions in SIB, but contingent removal of the objects used to obtain tactile stimulation produced clinically significant reductions.

Two studies were conducted to assess choice making among seven children with Rett syndrome. Study 1 entailed 20 opportunities to choose between a pair of food, beverage, and leisure items. All children made choices by either looking at or touching one of the items. However, half the opportunities elapsed without a choice having been made. Study 2 was designed to analyze the function of these no responses. Each item was offered individually on 10 separate occasions and the child received the item even if a prior choice had not occurred. Items were generally accepted whether or not a prior choice had been made. This suggests that the lack of a choice may not necessarily indicate lack of preference and that the relationship between selecting and accepting items may vary as a function of task configuration. Nonetheless, both configurations provided useful assessment information.

Two experiments were conducted to assess discrimination of picture requests for missing items among young children with developmental disabilities. In Experiment 1, three children were first taught to request one object when it was missing from a set of two related leisure items. In Experiment 2, two children were taught to request one object belonging to a set of three leisure items. In both studies the requesting response consisted of pointing to a photograph of the missing item. After acquisition of the initial request, discrimination of picture requests was assessed when the second item (Experiment 1) and second or third item (Experiment 2) was missing. Requests for the untrained items emerged in the presence of natural maintaining contingencies and in the absence of instructional prompts for all but the third child in Experiment 1. This child required continued intervention on the initial request. The results suggest that for some children a sequence of intervention and the programming of natural maintaining contingencies may prove effective in promoting the discrimination of picture requests for missing items among young children with developmental disabilities.

Background Active support is being introduced in many residential and respite homes in an effort to improve engagement in meaningful activity of people with intellectual disability. Method A train-the-trainer approach was used in a large government organisation that supports people with intellectual disability in Australia. Five apprentice trainers were trained to provide active support training to 65 staff associated with 6 group homes. These 5 trainers were then monitored to provide training to 54 staff in another 6 group homes. Staff evaluated their interactive training experiences, and pre and post outcome data were collected for a small number of service users from the second set of group homes, along with staff outcome data regarding residential working practices, group home management, and staffing practices. Results The train-the-trainer model proved to be an effective strategy for training large numbers of staff. The interactive training component was particularly effective and was associated with improvements in service user engagement in domestic tasks and decreased depression levels. Staff job satisfaction increased and significant improvements were recorded in residential working practices. Conclusions Active support training is an effective strategy for empowering staff to better support people with an intellectual disability to be meaningfully engaged in daily activities. There are implications for organisations related to ongoing implementation and practice improvement.

Effective engagement of young children in the classroom is a critical step toward achieving positive learning outcomes. The Learning and Engagement Questionnaire (LEQ) was developed by the first two authors to identify ways in which teachers strive to engage learners in the classroom. In this study, the factor structure of the LEQ is examined. Participants were 274 teachers of children in their first 3 years of formal schooling. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted and supported a five factor solution: Goal Directed Learning; Task Selection; Teacher Responsiveness; Intensive Teaching; and Planning the Learning Environment.

A family-centered approach to the support of families with a young child with an intellectual or developmental disability has been widely adopted in the last decade. While some of the foundational assumptions of family-centered theory have been tested, there remain considerable gaps in the research evidence for this approach. While parenting stress and competence have been examined in the general family support literature, these variables have received little attention in the family-centered support literature. This pilot study examined the relationship between parent stress and parenting competence and family-centered support. The results suggest that important components of family-centered practice are significantly associated with parent stress, but that a meaningful association between parenting competence and family-centered practice is yet to be demonstrated.
