Emissions of NH

Atmospheric alkaline gases, including NH3 and amines, have been demonstrated to play crucial roles in atmospheric chemical processes, from enhancing atmospheric nucleation to promoting secondary particulate matter formation. It has been suggested that new particle formation can contribute significantly to haze formation in Beijing and other megacities in China. Although NH3 and amines have been ubiquitously detected in the atmosphere, little is known about the specific source profiles and the corresponding source contributions. It is well accepted that agriculture-related emissions dominate the global NH3 budget in the atmosphere. However, several recent field studies demonstrated that non-agricultural emissions are the primary NH3 sources in many urban areas in China. Therefore, atmospheric models based on emission inventories concentrated on agricultural emissions may not realistically simulate the atmospheric environment, particularly in the populated megacities of China. Recently, NH3, amines, amides, and imines emission characteristics of motor vehicles have been determined explicitly through in situ roadside measurements. However, the emission features from many other anthropogenic activities are still unknown. In this study, based on constrained SoFi-PMF analysis, we have investigated the specific impacts of motor vehicle emissions on NH3 and other alkaline gases in urban Beijing. It was found that motor vehicles can contribute a predominant portion of amines in the urban environment, particularly during daytime. Hence, reducing on-road vehicular emissions can decrease primary emissions of criteria air pollutants (such as NOx, SO2, and PM2.5) and suppress secondary aerosol formation. Although the PMF-based source apportionment analysis may be subjective to individual bias, it provides a valuable opportunity to explore other non-vehicular sources. The septic system in the urban area is recognized as a significant contributor to background NH3 and amines in urban Beijing. Motor vehicle emissions usually show less seasonal variability. Intense demands for central heating, power generation, and biofuel usage in suburban areas may play a significant role in wintertime haze formation. These emission activities, however, may highly depend on environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity. Further investigations of the underlying releasing mechanisms and emission intensities are critically needed.

Forming an (H2SO4)(1)(amine)(1) cluster is the rate-limiting step in atmospheric H2SO4-amine nucleation, which governs the fast formation of new particles from gaseous precursors.Transformation of low-volatility gaseous precursors to new particles affects aerosol number concentration, cloud formation and hence the climate. The clustering of acid and base molecules is a major mechanism driving fast nucleation and initial growth of new particles in the atmosphere. However, the acid-base cluster composition, measured using state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, cannot explain the measured high formation rate of new particles. Here we present strong evidence for the existence of base molecules such as amines in the smallest atmospheric sulfuric acid clusters prior to their detection by mass spectrometers. We demonstrate that forming (H2SO4)(1)(amine)(1) is the rate-limiting step in atmospheric H2SO4-amine nucleation and the uptake of (H2SO4)(1)(amine)(1) is a major pathway for the initial growth of H2SO4 clusters. The proposed mechanism is very consistent with measured new particle formation in urban Beijing, in which dimethylamine is the key base for H2SO4 nucleation while other bases such as ammonia may contribute to the growth of larger clusters. Our findings further underline the fact that strong amines, even at low concentrations and when undetected in the smallest clusters, can be crucial to particle formation in the planetary boundary layer.

Understanding the spatiotemporal characteristics of the interactions among ecosystem services (ESs) is a crucial but challenging task for maintaining human well-being and achieving sustainable regional development. However, understanding the spatiotemporal interactions of multiple ESs at different grid scales and within different ecosystem services bundles (ESBs) is relatively limited, particularly in coal mining areas with a high groundwater table (CMA-HGT) where the land use has drastically changed as a result of mining subsidence. This study examines CMA-HGT in Huainan, aiming to identify ESBs and explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of trade-offs/synergies among ESs at distinct grid scales and ESBs. Five ESs relating to provisioning, regulation, and maintenance, including food production (FP), water yield (WY), soil conservation (SC), carbon sequestration (CS), and biodiversity maintenance (BM) were quantified using different biological models during the period 1987–2018. Spatiotemporal trade-offs/synergies among ESs were explored using correlation analysis and significance tests at different scales. The spatiotemporal distributions and main characteristics of distinct ESBs were identified using a self-organizing map (SOM) and Calinski criterion. The interactions among ESs in different ESBs were detected. Relationships between ESs and land use or coal production (CP) were explored using redundancy analysis (RDA). The results demonstrate that spatiotemporal trade-offs were generally observed among provisioning services at distinct grid scales and within different ESBs. Meanwhile, spatiotemporal synergies generally appeared between regulation and maintenance services at distinct grid scales. Interactions among ESs presented temporal dynamic, spatial heterogeneity and scales dependence due to the relationships of FP–BM or SC–CS had changed with the increasing of research scales. Three ESBs—ESB1, ESB2, and ESB3—were identified at a grid of scale of 1000 m, and their spatial locations varied across different periods, but the areas of variation covered less than 24% of the study area. BM was synergistic with FP, WY, SC, and CS; while WY had only a trade-off relationship with FP in ESB1. WY had trade-off relationships with FP, SC, CS, and BM in ESB2. In ESB3, BM was synergistic with FP, SC, and CS; while it was in a trade-off relationship with WY. Cultivated land, construction land and CP were the main driving factors in the WSA, ESB1, ESB2 and ESB3. There was a certain degree of change in the relationships between ESs and land use/CP, and the relationships among ESs at different grid scales and ESBs over time and space, which indicates strong regional heterogeneity and scale dependence. These results can provide detailed guidelines for formulating spatially targeted ecosystem management, restoration programs and ES payment policies.

Intense and frequent new particle formation (NPF) events have been observed in polluted urban environments, yet the dominant mechanisms are still under debate. To understand the key species and governing processes of NPF in polluted urban environments, we conducted comprehensive measurements in downtown Beijing during January–March, 2018. We performed detailed analyses on sulfuric acid cluster composition and budget, as well as the chemical and physical properties of oxidized organic molecules (OOMs). Our results demonstrate that the fast clustering of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and base molecules triggered the NPF events, and OOMs further helped grow the newly formed particles toward climate- and health-relevant sizes. This synergistic role of H2SO4, base species, and OOMs in NPF is likely representative of polluted urban environments where abundant H2SO4 and base species usually co-exist, and OOMs are with moderately low volatility when produced under high NOx concentrations. publishedVersion

Understanding the atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) process within the global range is important for revealing the budget of atmospheric aerosols and their impacts. We investigated the seasonal characteristics of NPF in the urban environment of Beijing. Aerosol size distributions down to similar to 1 nm and H2SO4 concentration were measured during 2018-2019. The observed formation rate of 1.5 nm particles (J(1.5)) is significantly higher than those in the clean environment, e.g., Hyytiala, whereas the growth rate is not significantly different. Both J(1.5) and NPF frequency in urban Beijing show a clear seasonal variation with maxima in winter and minima in summer, while the observed growth rates are generally within the same range around the year. We show that ambient temperature is a governing factor driving the seasonal variation of J(1.5). In contrast, the condensation sink and the daily maximum H2SO4 concentration show no significant seasonal variation during the NPF periods. In all four seasons, condensation of H2SO4 and (H2SO4)(n)(amine)(n) clusters contributes significantly to the growth rates in the sub-3 nm size range, whereas it is less important for the observed growth rates of particles above 3 nm. Therefore, other species are always needed for the growth of larger particles.

The optical and radiative properties of aerosols during a severe haze episode from 15 to 22 December 2016 over Beijing, Shijiazhuang, and Jiaozuo in the North China Plain were analyzed based on the ground-based and satellite data, meteorological observations, and atmospheric environmental monitoring data. The aerosol optical depth at 500 nm was 1.4 as the haze pollution developed. The Angstrom exponent was > 0.80 for most of the study period. The daily single-scattering albedo was > 0.85 over all of the North China Plain on the most polluted days and was > 0.97 on some particular days. The volumes of fine and coarse mode particles during the haze event were approximately 0.05–0.21 and 0.01–0.43 μm3, respectively—that is, larger than those in the time without haze. The daily absorption aerosol optical depth was about 0.01–0.11 in Beijing, 0.01–0.13 in Shijiazhuang, and 0.01–0.04 in Jiaozuo, and the average absorption Angstrom exponent varied between 0.6 and 2.0. The aerosol radiative forcing at the bottom of the atmosphere varied from –23 to –227,–34 to –199, and –29 to –191 W m–2 for the whole haze period, while the aerosol radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere varied from –4 to –98, –10 to –51, and –21 to –143 W m–2 in Beijing, Shijiazhuang, and Jiaozuo, respectively. Satellite observations showed that smoke, polluted dust, and polluted continental components of aerosols may aggravate air pollution during haze episodes. The analysis of the potential source contribution function and concentration-weighted trajectory showed that the contribution from local emissions and pollutants transport from upstream areas were 190–450 and 100–410 μg m–3, respectively.

A proton transfer reaction ion-drift chemical ionization mass spectrometer (PTR-ID-CIMS) equipped with a hydronium (H3+O) ion source was developed and deployed near an industrial zone in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China in spring 2015 to investigate industry-related emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Air pollutants including formaldehyde (HCHO), aromatics, and other trace gases (O3 and CO) were simultaneously measured. Humidity effects on the sensitivity of the PTR-ID-CIMS for HCHO detection were investigated and quantified. The performances of the PTR-ID-CIMS were also validated by intercomparing with offline HCHO measurement technique using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (DNPH) cartridges and the results showed fairly good agreement (slope = 0.81, R2 = 0.80). The PTR-ID-CIMS detection limit of HCHO (10 s, three-duty-cycle averages) was determined to be 0.9–2.4 (RH = 1–81.5 %) parts per billion by volume (ppbv) based on 3 times the standard deviations of the background signals. During the field study, observed HCHO concentrations ranged between 1.8 and 12.8 ppbv with a campaign average of 4.1 ± 1.6 ppbv, which was comparable with previous HCHO observations in other similar locations of China. However, HCHO diurnal profiles showed few features of secondary formation. In addition, time series of both HCHO and aromatic VOCs indicated strong influence from local emissions. Using a multiple linear regression fit model, on average the observed HCHO can be attributed to secondary formation (13.8 %), background level (27.0 %), and industry-related emissions, i.e., combustion sources (43.2 %) and chemical productions (16.0 %). Moreover, within the plumes the industry-related emissions can account for up to 69.2 % of the observed HCHO. This work has provided direct evidence of strong primary emissions of HCHO from industry-related activities. These primary HCHO sources can potentially have a strong impact on local and regional air pollution formation in this area of China. Given the fact that the YRD is the largest economic zone in China and is dense with petrochemical industries, primary industrial HCHO emissions should be strictly monitored and regulated.

SO2 concentration decreased rapidly in recent years in China due to the implementation of strict control policies by the government. Particulate sulfate (pSO(4)(2-)) and gaseous H2SO4 (SA) are two major products of SO2 and they play important roles in the haze formation and new particle formation (NPF), respectively. We examined the change in pSO(4)(2-) and SA concentrations in response to reduced SO2 concentration using long-term measurement data in Beijing. Simulations from the Community Multiscale Air Quality model with a 2-D Volatility Basis Set (CMAQ/2D-VBS) were used for comparison. From 2013 to 2018, SO2 concentration in Beijing decreased by similar to 81% (from 9.1 ppb to 1.7 ppb). pSO(4)(2-) concentration in submicrometer particles decreased by similar to 60% from 2012-2013 (monthly average of similar to 10 mu g.m(-3)) to 2018-2019 (monthly average of similar to 4 mu g.m(-3)). Accordingly, the fraction of pSO(4)(2-) in these particles decreased from20-30% to b10%. Increased sulfur oxidation ratio was observed both in the measurements and the CMAQ/2D-VBS simulations. Despite the reduction in SO2 concentration, there was no obvious decrease in SA concentration based on data from several measuring periods from 2008 to 2019. This was supported by the increased SA:SO2 ratio with reduced SO2 concentration and condensation sink. NPF frequency in Beijing between 2004 and 2019 remains relatively constant. This constant NPF frequency is consistent with the relatively stable SA concentration in Beijing, while different from some other cities where NPF frequency was reported to decrease with decreased SO2 concentrations. In this work, we present on-line fluorescent aerosol measurements by the wideband integrated bioaerosol spectrometer (WIBS-4A) near an industrial zone in Nanjing, a megacity in the Yangtze-River-Delta (YRD) region. The fieldwork was conducted from April 1 to May 8, 2014. A TSI. 3321 aerosol-particle-sizer (APS) was simultaneously deployed to measure the total number size distribution of aerosol with diameter from 0.8–20 μm. Both WIBS-4A and APS reported similar number concentration and temporal profiles (R2 = 0.72). However, the daily average number of potential bioaerosols was only 0.5 ± 0.2% of the total particles detected by the WIBS-4A and displayed a completely different diurnal profile from that of APS. In addition, WIBS-4A can only provide integrated fluorescent signals, which strongly limited the potential to specifically identify the bioaerosols. Accordingly, hierarchical-agglomerative-cluster-analysis (HACA) was utilized to identify and speciate the potential bioaerosols from the WIBS-4A dataset. By maximizing the total distances among all potential cluster centers, a 12-cluster solution was accepted as the optimum result. These clusters were further identified according to their fluorescent signatures, size, and morphology, i.e., non-bioaerosols, bacteria, and fungal spores and/or pollen fragments. Bacteria were the dominant bioaerosol species detected in this work. The diurnal profiles of bioaerosols correlated very well with relatively humidity (RH), reaching daily maxima around 3 AM~6 AM, indicating the presence of humidity controlled bioaerosol emission mechanism, i.e., bacteria may flourish under moderate ambient temperature, RH, and the absence of UV radiation. The size- and AF-distributions of bioaerosols indicated that bioaerosols normally varied substantially in size and assumed a rather irregular shape. Although the number concentration of bioaerosols was relatively small, most bioaerosols can efficiently serve as ice nuclei by providing rough and irregular surfaces, verified by the observation results. Therefore, WIBS-4A measurements can still be informative for investigations of bioaerosols in the atmosphere, especially when HACA method was incorporated into the data processing.

New particle formation (NPF) and the subsequent particle growth occur frequently in various atmospheric environments. Significant influence of transport on aerosol size distributions is commonly observed, especially for non-regional NPF events. With certain assumptions and approximations, a population balance method is proposed to examine the influence of transport on the temporal evolution of aerosol size distributions during NPF events. The method is derived from the aerosol general dynamic equation in the continuous form. Meteorological information (e.g., wind speed, wind direction, water vapor mixing ratio) was used to complement the analysis. The NPF events observed in South-East Tibet, Fukue Island, and urban Beijing were analyzed using the proposed method. Significant contribution of transport to the observed aerosol size distributions is found during the NPF events in both South-East Tibet and Fukue Island. The changes in the contribution of transport is in good correlation with the changes in wind speed and direction. This correlation indicates that local mountain and valley breezes govern the observed new particles at the South-East Tibet site. Most NPF events observed at Fukue Island are closely related to the long-range transport of aerosols and gaseous precursors due to the movement of air masses. Regional NPF events are typically observed in urban Beijing and the contribution of transport to the observed aerosol size distributions is negligible compared to condensational growth and coagulation scavenging. In relatively clean atmospheric environment, the proposed method can be used to characterize the contribution of transport to particles in the size range from ~ 10 nm to ~ 50 nm. However, during intense NPF events in relatively polluted atmosphere, the estimated contribution of transport is sensitive to the uncertainties in condensational growth and coagulation scavenging due to the dominance of their corresponding terms in the population balance equation.

The accuracy in quantification of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) using a Q-ACSM has been comprehensively investigated in this work. SOA samples were generated under simulated photochemical oxidation conditions in a 4.5 m3 Teflon chamber from three different volatile organic compounds (VOC) of atmospheric relevant concentrations (dozens of ppbv): α-pinene, isoprene, and toluene, representing both biogenic and anthropogenic VOC. Different SOA oxidation states were achieved by changing the relative ratio of the VOC precursor to the oxidants (O3 or OH). A scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and an aerosol particle mass analyzer (APM) were used to determine the number-size distribution and the exact mass of the chamber-generated SOA, which were then used to deduce the SOA effective density and mass concentration. Results showed that aerosol mass concentration measured by the Q-ACSM based on SMPS calibration alone may be associated with considerable errors due to the fact that the effective density of SOA at different oxidation state can change substantially. More importantly, the sensitivity of the Q-ACSM to a specific type of SOA was found to be anti-correlated with the aerosol oxidation state regardless of the VOC precursors. This may be due to the decreasing of relative ionization efficiency (RIE) or the collection efficiency (CE) of the Q-ACSM for more oxidized SOA. To pinpoint the actual cause, ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) seed particles were injected into the chamber before SOAs were produced and the CE for a specific SOA sample was hence determined with reference to the changes in sulfate signals. Our experiment results along with previous literature reports strongly implied that as the SOA oxidation state increases, SOA will transform gradually from a liquid state (CE ≈ 1) into a solid (or glassy) state with a CE of 0.2~0.5. Meanwhile, the RIE of OA decreased substantially when SOA transformed from hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA) into more oxygenated OA (OOA) and may further decrease as O/C continued to increase. Our results indicated that the current Q-ACSM calibration procedure using a constant RIE may lead to somewhat underestimation of more oxidized OOA but overestimation of less oxidized HOA, i.e., a variable RIE shall be applied, most likely as a function of the SOA oxidation state.

A new corona discharge (CD) based ion source was developed for a commercial high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (HRToF-CIMS) (Aerodyne Research Inc.) to measure both gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and aerosol sulfate after thermal desorption. Nitrate core ions (NO3−) were used as reagent ions and were generated by a negative discharge in zero air followed by addition of excess nitrogen dioxide (NO2) to convert primary ions and hydroxyl radicals (OH) into NO3− ions and nitric acid (HNO3). The CD-HRToF-CIMS showed no detectable interference from hundreds parts per billion by volume (ppbv) of sulfur dioxide (SO2). Unlike the atmospheric pressure ionization (API) ToF-CIMS, the CD ion source was integrated onto the ion–molecule reaction (IMR) chamber and which made it possible to measure aerosol sulfate by coupling to a filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO). Moreover, compared with a quadrupole-based mass spectrometer, the desired HSO4− signal was detected by its exact mass of m/z 96.960, which was well resolved from the potential interferences of HCO3−⋅(H2O)2 (m/z 97.014) and O−⋅H2O⋅HNO3 (m/z 97.002). In this work, using laboratory-generated standards the CD-HRToF-CIMS was demonstrated to be able to detect as low as 3.1 × 105 molecules cm−3 gaseous H2SO4 and 0.5 μg m−3 ammonium sulfate based on 10-s integration time and two times of the baseline noise. The CD ion source had the advantages of low cost and a simple but robust structure. Since the system was non-radioactive and did not require corrosive HNO3 gas, it can be readily field deployed. The CD-HRToF-CIMS can be a powerful tool for both field and laboratory studies of aerosol formation mechanism and the chemical processes that were critical to understand the evolution of aerosols in the atmosphere.

The predominating role of aerosol Fuchs surface area, AFuchs, in determining the occurrence of new particle formation (NPF) events in Beijing was elucidated in this study. Analysis was based on a field campaign from March 12th to April 6th, 2016, in Beijing, during which aerosol size distributions down to ~ 1 nm and sulfuric acid concentration were simultaneously monitored. The 26 days were classified into 11 typical NPF days, 2 undefined days, and 13 non-event days. A dimensionless factor, LΓ, characterizing the relative ratio of the coagulation scavenging rate over the condensational growth rate and predicting whether or not a NPF event would occur (Kuang et al., 2010), was applied. The three parameters determining LΓ are sulfuric acid concentration, the growth enhancement factor characterizing contribution of other gaseous precursors to particle growth, Γ, and AFuchs. Different from other atmospheric environment such as in Boulder and Hyytiälä, the variations of daily maximum sulfuric acid concentration and Γ in Beijing are in a narrow range with geometric standard deviations of 1.40 and 1.31, respectively. Positive correlation was found between estimated new particle formation rate, J1.5, and sulfuric acid concentration with a mean fitted exponent of 2.4. However, sulfuric acid concentration on NPF days is not significantly higher than that on non-event days. Instead, AFuchs varies greatly among days in Beijing with a geometric standard deviation of 2.56, while it is relatively stable at other locations such as Tecamac, Atlanta, and Boulder. Good correlation was found between AFuchs and LΓ in Beijing (R2 = 0.88). It appears that the abundance of gaseous precursors such as sulfuric acid in Beijing is high enough to have nucleation, however, it is AFuchs that determines the occurrence of NPF event in Beijing. 10 in 11 NPF events occurred when AFuchs is smaller than 200 μm2/cm3, and the NPF event was suppressed due to coagulation scavenging when AFuchs is larger than 200 μm2/cm3. Measured AFuchs is in good correlation with PM2.5 mass concentration (R2 = 0.85) since AFuchs in Beijing is mainly determined by particles in the size range of 50–500 nm that also contribute to PM2.5 mass concentration.

Loess deposits (Xiashu Loess) are widely distributed in the lower Changjiang Valley, East China, and are considered to be of eolian origin with a similar provenance to the well-documented loess of north-central China. The Xiashu Loess is characterized by strong dissolution of carbonate, and considerable weathering of some silicate minerals, especially plagioclase. Chemical mobility of Ca>Sr>Na>Mg was observed in the Xiashu Loess sediments, whilst most transition metals are relatively enriched. Chemical index of variation (CIA) and element ratios of K/Na and K/Ca record several paleoclimate events in the lower Changjiang Valley during the mid-late Quaternary, corresponding with isotopic records in deep-sea sediments. East China might be governed by stronger summer monsoons than north-central China during interglacial periods of the mid-late Quaternary, which may somewhat obscure the record of winter monsoons during glacial periods.

Due to profound impact on climate and human health, air quality has attracted attention from all levels of the civil society. The key step in the provision of required tools for the society to tackle the complex air quality problem is to characterize it in a comprehensive manner with a long-term perspective. Here, we describe a continuous and comprehensive observation station and its accompanying state-of-the-art instrumentation that was established to investigate the complex urban atmospheric environment in a rapidly developing Chinese Megacity. The station, located in downtown Beijing, aims to study air quality by identifying the major atmospheric pollutants and key processes determining their formation and loss mechanisms. A few hundreds of parameters are continuously measured with the state-of-the-art instruments, including trace gas concentrations, aerosol particle size distributions, and mass concentrations, covering aerosol particle chemical composition from molecules to micrometer-sized aerosol particles. This produced long-term, comprehensive big data with around 1×1011 bytes per year. In this paper, we provide an overview on the facilities of the station, the instrumentation used, the workflow of continuous observations and examples of results from 2018 to 2019 and a basis for establishing a modern long-term, comprehensive atmospheric urban observation station in other megacities.

Due to profound impact on climate and human health, air quality has attracted attention from all levels of the civil society. The key step in the provision of required tools for the society to tackle the complex air quality problem is to characterize it in a comprehensive manner with a long-term perspective. Here, we describe a continuous and comprehensive observation station and its accompanying state-of-the-art instrumentation that was established to investigate the complex urban atmospheric environment in a rapidly developing Chinese Megacity. The station, located in downtown Beijing, aims to study air quality by identifying the major atmospheric pollutants and key processes determining their formation and loss mechanisms. A few hundreds of parameters are continuously measured with the state-of-the-art instruments, including trace gas concentrations, aerosol particle size distributions, and mass concentrations, covering aerosol particle chemical composition from molecules to micrometer-sized aerosol particles. This produced long-term, comprehensive big data with around 1×1011 bytes per year.
