The Dirac equation is critical to understanding the universe, and plays an important role in technological advancements. Compared to the stationary solution, the dynamical evolution under the Dirac Hamiltonian is less understood, exemplified by Zitterbewegung. Although originally predicted in relativistic quantum mechanics, Zitterbewegung can also appear in some classical systems, which leads to the important question of whether Zitterbewegung of Dirac Fermions is underlain by a more fundamental and universal interference behavior without classical analogs. We here reveal such an interference pattern in phase space, which underlies but goes beyond Zitterbewegung, and whose nonclassicality is manifested by the negativity of the phase-space quasiprobability distribution, and the associated pseudospin-momentum entanglement. We confirm this discovery by numerical simulation and an on-chip experiment, where a superconducting qubit and a quantized microwave field respectively emulate the internal and external degrees of freedom of a Dirac particle. The measured quasiprobability negativities well agree with the numerical simulation. Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a novel phenomenon appearing in non-Hermitian systems. Here, we report the experimental observation of NHSE. Different from the previous non-reciprocal circuit implementation scheme using logic components, we construct our one-dimensional (1D) circuits using linear components only. Besides, we achieve the non-reciprocity by proportionally varying the parameter value of the components. By measuring the voltage response of each site, the information of eigenstates can be mapped out. The results show that the voltage response is always larger on one end of the circuit no matter on which end voltage driving is applied, indicating clearly the presence of the NHSE. Furthermore, we also simulate the interplay of NHSE and Anderson localization (AL) when additional disorder is introduced. Upon increasing the disorder strength, we observe the transformation from the skin effect phase to the localized phase. In the regime of skin effect phase, the eigenstates are all localized at one edge while eigenstates are affected by the voltage supply input in localized phase. Generative adversarial networks are an emerging technique with wide applications in machine learning, which have achieved dramatic success in a number of challenging tasks including image and video generation. When equipped with quantum processors, their quantum counterparts—called quantum generative adversarial networks (QGANs)—may even exhibit exponential advantages in certain machine learning applications. Here, we report an experimental implementation of a QGAN using a programmable superconducting processor, in which both the generator and the discriminator are parameterized via layers of single- and two-qubit quantum gates. The programmed QGAN runs automatically several rounds of adversarial learning with quantum gradients to achieve a Nash equilibrium point, where the generator can replicate data samples that mimic the ones from the training set. Our implementation is promising to scale up to noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, thus paving the way for experimental explorations of quantum advantages in practical applications with near-term quantum technologies.

Random quantum states serve as a powerful tool in various scientific fields, including quantum supremacy and black hole physics. It has been theoretically predicted that entanglement transitions may happen for different partitions of multipartite random quantum states, however, the experimental observation of these transitions is still absent. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the entanglement transitions witnessed by negativity on a fully connected 20-qubit superconducting processor. We apply the parallel entangling operations, that significantly decrease the depth of the pseudo-random circuits, to generate pseudo-random pure states of up to 15 qubits. By quantum state tomography of the reduced density matrix of six qubits, we measure the negativity spectra. Then, by changing the sizes of the environment and subsystems, we observe the entanglement transitions that are directly identified by logarithmic entanglement negativities based on the negativity spectra. In addition, we characterize the randomness of our circuits by measuring the distance between the distribution of output bit-string probabilities and the Porter-Thomas distribution. Our results show that the superconducting processor with all-to-all connectivity behaves a promising platform in generating random states and understanding the entanglement structure for multipartite quantum systems.

The non-Hermitian systems with the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) are very sensitive to the imposed boundary conditions and lattice size, which leads to size-dependent non-Hermitian skin effects. Here, we report the experimental observation of NHSE with different boundary conditions and different lattice size in a unidirectional hopping model based on a circuit platform. The circuit admittance spectra and corresponding eigenstates are very sensitive to the presence of the boundary. Meanwhile, our experimental results show how the lattice size and boundary terms together affect the strength of NHSE. Therefore, our electric circuit provides a good platform to observe size-dependent boundary effects in non-Hermitian systems., 8 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables

The quantum Hall effect, fundamental in modern condensed matter physics, continuously inspires new theories and predicts emergent phases of matter. Analysing Chern insulators, a lattice version of the quantum Hall effect without external magnetic field, by testing the bulk-edge correspondence remains challenging on quantum simulation platforms. Here we experimentally demonstrate three types of Chern insulators with synthetic dimensions on a programable 30-qubit-ladder superconducting processor. Using a dynamic spectroscopic technique, we directly measure the band structures of the 2D Chern insulator along synthetic dimensions with various configurations of Aubry-André-Harper chains. By monitoring the quantum walks of an excitation initialised at the edge qubit, we observe dynamical localisation of the topologically protected chiral edge states. With these two signatures of topology, our experiments implement the bulk-edge correspondence in the synthetic 2D Chern insulator. Moreover, we simulate two different bilayer Chern insulators on the ladder-type superconducting processor. With the same periodically modulated on-site potentials for two coupled chains, we observe topologically nontrivial edge states with zero Hall conductivity. When the on-site potentials of two coupled chains have opposite signs, we probe a Chern insulator with higher Chern numbers. Our work shows the potential of using superconducting qubits for investigating different intriguing topological phases of quantum matter.

Hawking radiation is one of the quantum features of a black hole that can be understood as a quantum tunneling across the event horizon of the black hole, but it is quite difficult to directly observe the Hawking radiation of an astrophysical black hole. Remarkable experiments of analogue black holes on various platforms have been performed. However, due to the experimental difficulty of accurately constructing curved spacetime and precisely measuring the thermal spectrum, Hawking radiation and its quantum nature, such as entanglement, have not been adequately investigated. Based on the recent architecture breakthrough of tunable couplers for superconducting processors, we experimentally realize an analogue black hole using our newly developed chip with a chain of 10 superconducting transmon qubits with interactions mediated by 9 transmon-type tunable couplers. By developing efficient techniques to engineer the couplings between qubits via tuning couplers, we achieve both flat and curved spacetime backgrounds. The quantum walks of quasi-particle in the curved spacetime reflect the gravitational effect near the black hole, resulting in the behavior of Hawking radiation. By virtue of the state tomography measurement of all 7 qubits outside the analogue event horizon, we show that Hawking radiation can be verified. In addition, an entangled pair is prepared inside the horizon and the dynamics of entanglement in the curved spacetime is directly measured. Our results would stimulate more interests to explore the related features of black holes using the programmable superconducting processor with tunable couplers.

Many-body localization (MBL) describes a quantum phase where an isolated interacting system subject to sufficient disorder displays non-ergodic behavior, evading thermal equilibrium that occurs under its own dynamics. Previously, the thermalization-MBL transition has been largely characterized with the growth of disorder. Here, we explore a new axis, reporting on an energy resolved MBL transition using a 19-qubit programmable superconducting processor, which enables precise control and flexibility of both disorder strength and initial state preparations. We observe that the onset of localization occurs at different disorder strengths, with distinguishable energy scales, by measuring time-evolved observables and many-body wavefunctions related quantities. Our results open avenues for the experimental exploration of many-body mobility edges in MBL systems, whose existence is widely debated due to system size finiteness, and where exact simulations in classical computers become unfeasible., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures + supplementary information

Simulating response properties of molecules is crucial for interpreting experimental spectroscopies and accelerating materials design. However, it remains a long-standing computational challenge for electronic structure methods on classical computers. While quantum computers hold the promise to solve this problem more efficiently in the long run, existing quantum algorithms requiring deep quantum circuits are infeasible for near-term noisy quantum processors. Here, we introduce a pragmatic variational quantum response (VQR) algorithm for response properties, which circumvents the need for deep quantum circuits. Using this algorithm, we report the first simulation of linear response properties of molecules including dynamic polarizabilities and absorption spectra on a superconducting quantum processor. Our results indicate that a large class of important dynamical properties such as Green's functions are within the reach of near-term quantum hardware using this algorithm in combination with suitable error mitigation techniques., 22 pages, 4 figures

In this study, we introduce an online public quantum computation platform, named as ScQ, based on a 1D array of a 10-qubit superconducting processor. Single-qubit rotation gates can be performed on each qubit. Controlled-NOT gates between nearest-neighbor sites on the 1D array of 10 qubits are available. We show the online preparation and verification of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of up to 10 qubits through this platform for all possible blocks of qubits in the chain. The graphical user interface and quantum assembly language methods are presented to achieve the above tasks, which rely on a parameter scanning feature implemented on ScQ. The performance of this quantum computation platform, such as fidelities of logic gates and details of the superconducting device, are presented.

The step-edge type high temperature superconductor (HTS) radio frequency (rf) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) were fabricated from YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films with a field sensitivity of 66 fT/Hz1/2. Even though the sensitivity of the rf SQUID sensor used in the experiments was degraded to 77 fT/Hz1/2 in the magnetic shielded room (MSR), the performance of the rf SQUID sensor was good enough for the ultra-low field (ULF) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments at a measurement field of 61.5 μT. With the help of a strictly controlled fast switching circuit and a coupled LC circuit which acted as flux transformer, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the rf SQUID-based ULF NMR system with different operating points was measured. The optimum SNR was 40 dB which increased significantly by coupling an input coil closely beneath the rf SQUID sensor. The extracted 1/T1 value for pure water sample at 23 ∘C showed the rf SQUID based ULF NMR was an effective system for ULF NMR researches. All above, the direct coupled method and the control circuit show a great potential in the future rf SQUID-based ULF NMR &MRI system.

The temperature dependence of proton's spin-lattice relaxation time T 1 in water samples and Gd-based contrast agents with a measurement field of 72 μ T was systematically studied by dc-SQUID-based ultralow field (ULF) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. The temperature of samples was controlled by a thermostatic bath and the standard error of T 1 was around 0.01 s within five different groups, the results showed that T 1 had a similar linear temperature dependence when it was compared to conventional NMR data and varied with the purity of the water samples. Then, the relaxivity r 1 of Gd-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and Gd-DTPA (where DTPA is diethylene triamine pentaacetate) were also studied. Both of them had a much higher r 1 in ULF NMR than conventional NMR, which was around 45 mM−1·s−1 and 98 mM−1·s−1, respectively; however, the T 1 of Gd-based contrast agents did not follow the linear temperature dependence, and the relaxivity r 1 would not be influenced by temperature, which implies Gd-MOFs and Gd-DTPA are also high performance T 1 contrast agents in ULF NMR and MRI.

Direct atomic-scale observations and measurements on dynamics of amorphous metallic nanoparticles (a-NPs) are challenging owing to the insufficient consciousness to their striking characterizations and the difficulties in technological approaches. In this study, we observe coalescence process of the a-NPs at atomic scale. We measure the viscosity of the a-NPs through the particles coalescence by in situ method. We find that the a-NPs have fast dynamics, and the viscosity of the a-NPs exhibits a power law relationship with size of the a-NPs. The a-NPs with sizes smaller than 3 nm are in a supercooled liquid state and exhibit liquid-like behaviours with a decreased viscosity by four orders of magnitude lower than that of bulk glasses. These results reveal the intrinsic flow characteristics of glasses in low demension, and pave a way to understand the liquid-like behaviours of low dimension glass, and are also of key interest to develop size-controlled nanodevices., Nanoscale materials often exhibit size-dependent behaviour. Here, the authors use electron microscopy to quantitatively study the size-related dynamics of amorphous metallic nanoparticles, finding that particles below a critical size are in a supercooled liquid state at room temperature, with a viscosity much lower than that of bulk glasses.

According to quantum mechanics, chiral states cannot be non-degenerate eingenstates of a parity-conserving Hamiltonian. This is in contradiction to the existence of chiral molecules—a fact known as as the Hund paradox1. The origin of molecular and biological chirality is conjectured to be related to parity-breaking interactions2,3 or environmental decoherence4, but a quantum superposition of two chiral molecular states with distinctive optical activities has never been observed5. To make progress in addressing these questions, it would be helpful to construct an artificial quantum system that breaks the parity symmetry and that can be prepared in a superposition of two chiral states. Here we report the synthesis of the parity-breaking antisymmetric spin exchange interaction in all-to-all connected superconducting circuits, which allows us to show various chiral spin dynamics in up to five-spin clusters. We also demonstrate the entanglement of up to five qubits in Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger states based on a three-spin chiral logic gate. Our results are a step towards quantum simulation of magnetism with antisymmetric spin exhange interaction and quantum computation with chiral spin states. Parity-breaking antisymmetric spin exchange interaction is reported in clusters of five qubits within superconducting circuits. This allows the creation of chiral spin dynamics, with potential for future quantum simulations of chiral molecules.

Multipartite entangled states are significant resources for both quantum information processing and quantum metrology. In particular, non-Gaussian entangled states are predicted to achieve a higher sensitivity of precision measurements than Gaussian states. On the basis of metrological sensitivity, the conventional linear Ramsey squeezing parameter (RSP) efficiently characterises the Gaussian entangled atomic states but fails for much wider classes of highly sensitive non-Gaussian states. These complex non-Gaussian entangled states can be classified by the nonlinear squeezing parameter (NLSP), as a generalisation of the RSP with respect to nonlinear observables, and identified via the Fisher information. However, the NLSP has never been measured experimentally. Using a 19-qubit programmable superconducting processor, here we report the characterisation of multiparticle entangled states generated during its nonlinear dynamics. First, selecting 10 qubits, we measure the RSP and the NLSP by single-shot readouts of collective spin operators in several different directions. Then, by extracting the Fisher information of the time-evolved state of all 19 qubits, we observe a large metrological gain of 9.89$^{+0.28}_{-0.29}$ dB over the standard quantum limit, indicating a high level of multiparticle entanglement for quantum-enhanced phase sensitivity. Benefiting from high-fidelity full controls and addressable single-shot readouts, the superconducting processor with interconnected qubits provides an ideal platform for engineering and benchmarking non-Gaussian entangled states that are useful for quantum-enhanced metrology., 13+12 pages, 10+2 figures

Qubit initialization is a critical task in quantum computation and communication. Extensive efforts have been made to achieve this with high speed, efficiency and scalability. However, previous approaches have either been measurement-based and required fast feedback, suffered from crosstalk or required sophisticated calibration. Here, we report a fast and high-fidelity reset scheme, avoiding the issues above without any additional chip architecture. By modulating the flux through a transmon qubit, we realize a swap between the qubit and its readout resonator that suppresses the excited state population to 0.08% $\pm$ 0.08% within 34 ns (284 ns if photon depletion of the resonator is required). Furthermore, our approach (i) can achieve effective second excited state depletion, (ii) has negligible effects on neighbouring qubits, and (iii) offers a way to entangle the qubit with an itinerant single photon, useful in quantum communication applications., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) are one of the most fundamental subjects in many-body physics, and has recently attracted considerable research interests in quantum simulations. Here we experimentally investigate the emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge invariance in a 1D superconducting circuit with 10 transmon qubits. By precisely adjusting staggered longitudinal and transverse fields to each qubit, we construct an effective Hamiltonian containing an LGT and gauge-broken terms. The corresponding matter sector can exhibit a localization, and there also exists a 3-qubit operator, of which the expectation value can retain nonzero for a long time in low-energy regimes. The above localization can be regarded as the confinement of matter fields, and the 3-body operator is the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge generator. These experimental results demonstrate that, despite the absence of gauge structure in the effective Hamiltonian, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge invariance can still emerge in low-energy regimes. Our work provides a method for both theoretically and experimentally studying the rich physics in quantum many-body systems with emergent gauge invariance., Comment: 7+9 pages, 4+6 figures

The Bloch oscillation (BO) and Wannier-Stark localization (WSL) are fundamental concepts about metal-insulator transitions in condensed matter physics. These phenomena have also been observed in semiconductor superlattices and simulated in platforms such as photonic waveguide arrays and cold atoms. Here, we report experimental investigation of BOs and WSL simulated with a 5-qubit programmable superconducting processor, of which the effective Hamiltonian is an isotropic $XY$ spin chain. When applying a linear potential to the system by properly tuning all individual qubits, we observe that the propagation of a single spin on the chain is suppressed. It tends to oscillate near the neighborhood of their initial positions, which demonstrates the characteristics of BOs and WSL. We verify that the WSL length is inversely correlated to the potential gradient. Benefiting from the precise single-shot simultaneous readout of all qubits in our experiments, we can also investigate the thermal transport, which requires the joint measurement of more than one qubits. The experimental results show that, as an essential characteristic for BOs and WSL, the thermal transport is also blocked under a linear potential. Here we report the first observation of simultaneous excitation of two noninteracting atoms by a pair of time-frequency correlated photons in a superconducting circuit. The strong coupling regime of this process enables the synthesis of a three-body interaction Hamiltonian, which allows the generation of the tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state in a single step with a fidelity as high as 0.95. We further demonstrate the quantum Zeno effect of inhibiting the simultaneous two-atom excitation by continuously measuring whether the first photon is emitted. Superradiance and subradiance concerning enhanced and inhibited collective radiation of an ensemble of atoms have been a central topic in quantum optics. However, precise generation and control of these states remain challenging. Here we deterministically generate up to 10-qubit superradiant and 8-qubit subradiant states, each containing a single excitation, in a superconducting quantum circuit with multiple qubits interconnected by a cavity resonator. The $\sqrt{N}$-scaling enhancement of the coupling strength between the superradiant states and the cavity is validated. By applying an appropriate phase gate on each qubit, we are able to switch the single collective excitation between superradiant and subradiant states. While the subradiant states containing a single excitation are forbidden from emitting photons, we demonstrate that they can still absorb photons from the resonator. However, for an even number of qubits, a singlet state with half of the qubits being excited can neither emit nor absorb photons, which is verified with 4 qubits. This study is a step forward in coherent control of collective radiation and has promising applications in quantum information processing.

Superconducting simulators are used to investigate dynamical phase transitions, revealing their applications in quantum metrology., Nonequilibrium quantum many-body systems, which are difficult to study via classical computation, have attracted wide interest. Quantum simulation can provide insights into these problems. Here, using a programmable quantum simulator with 16 all-to-all connected superconducting qubits, we investigate the dynamical phase transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model with a quenched transverse field. Clear signatures of dynamical phase transitions, merging different concepts of dynamical criticality, are observed by measuring the nonequilibrium order parameter, nonlocal correlations, and the Loschmidt echo. Moreover, near the dynamical critical point, we obtain a spin squeezing of −7.0 ± 0.8 dB, showing multipartite entanglement, useful for measurements with precision fivefold beyond the standard quantum limit. On the basis of the capability of entangling qubits simultaneously and the accurate single-shot readout of multiqubit states, this superconducting quantum simulator can be used to study other problems in nonequilibrium quantum many-body systems, such as thermalization, many-body localization, and emergent phenomena in periodically driven systems.

We have developed an electronic hardware system for the control and readout of multi-superconducting qubit devices. The hardware system is based on the design ideas of good scalability, high synchronization and low latency. The system, housed inside a VPX-6U chassis, includes multiple arbitrary-waveform generator (AWG) channels, analog-digital-converter (ADC) channels as well as direct current source channels. The system can be used for the control and readout of up to twelve superconducting transmon qubits in one chassis, and control and readout of more and more qubit can be carried out by interconnecting the chassis. By using field programmable gate array (FPGA) processors, the system incorporates three features that are specifically useful for superconducting qubit research. Firstly, qubit signals can be processed using the on-board FPGA after being acquired by ADCs, significantly reducing data processing time and data amount for storage and transmission. Secondly, different output modes, such as direct output and sequential output modes, of AWG can be implemented with pre-encoded FPGA. Thirdly, with data acquisition ADCs and controlAWGs jointly controlled by the same FPGA, the feedback latency can be reduced, and in ourtest a 178.4 ns latency time is realized. This is very useful for future quantum feedback experiments. Finally, we demonstrate the functionality of the system by applying the system to the control and readout of a 10 qubit superconducting quantum processor.

Josephson parameter amplifier (JPA) is a microwave signal amplifier device with near-quantum-limit-noise performance. It has important applications in scientific research fields such as quantum computing and dark matter detection. This work reports the fabrication and characterization of broadband JPA devices and their applications in multi-qubit readout and squeezing of vacuum state. We use a process in which transmission lines and electrodes are made of niobium thin film and aluminum Josephson junctions are made by Dolan bridge technique. We believe this process is more convenient than the process we used previously. The whole production process adopts electron beam lithography technology to ensure high structural resolution. The test result shows that the gain value of the manufactured JPA can exceed 15 dB, and the amplification bandwidth is about 400 MHz. The noise temperature is about 400 mK at the working frequency of 6.2 GHz. The devices have been successfully used in experiments involving superconducting multi-qubit quantum processors. Furthermore, the device is applied to squeeze vacuum fluctuations and a squeezing level of 1.635 dB is achieved.

Holonomies, arising from non-Abelian geometric transformations of quantum states in Hilbert space, offer a promising way for quantum computation. These holonomies are not commutable and thus can be used for the realization of a universal set of quantum logic gates, where the global geometric feature may result in some noise-resilient advantages. Here we report the first on-chip realization of a non-Abelian geometric controlled-Not gate in a superconducting circuit, which is a building block for constructing a holonomic quantum computer. The conditional dynamics is achieved in an all-to-all connected architecture involving multiple frequency-tunable superconducting qubits controllably coupled to a resonator; a holonomic gate between any two qubits can be implemented by tuning their frequencies on resonance with the resonator and applying a two-tone drive to one of them. This gate represents an important step towards the all-geometric realization of scalable quantum computation on a superconducting platform., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

Superconducting quantum computing is a solid state quantum computing technology based on Josephson junction circuits. It becomes one of the most promising candidates for realizing practical quantum computer/simulator, because of its scalability, easy to coupling and control, compatibility to semiconductor technologies, etc. As the complicated electromagnetic environment in solid state metal and insulator, superconducting quantum bits (qubits) suffered from shot coherence time since its early development. In this review, we described some recently developed superconducting qubit structures, including Transmon/Xmon, Fluxonium and C-shunt flux qubit. Although these new qubit structures have very different circuit parameters and energy scales, they all find their way to effectively suppress environmental noises. As a result, their coherence time were improved significantly. Transmon, a transmission-line shunted plasma oscillation qubit, was now among the most popular structures for building a multi-qubit superconducting quantum circuit. It introduced a relatively large shunt capacitor to remarkably reduce the charge dispersion. Although the non-linearity is also decreased, by operating in a properly chosen E J / E c , transmon can greatly reduce the charge noise while only sacrificing a small amount of non-linearity. Xmon can be considered as a modified version of transmon. It is designed and optimized for multi-qubit operation and measurement with separate X / Y and Z control lines for each qubit, and a readout bus (a transmission line or a low- Q bandpass filter) for simultaneous readout of all the qubits. Fluxonium provide another solution for suppressing the charge noise in Cooper-pair box (CPB). It introduces a large shunt inductance to filter low-frequency offset charge in the small capacitor of the phase-slip junction (the small junction). To keep the qubit operating in the charge region, the shunt inductor should be large enough to keep the impedance larger than the superconducting impedance quantum R Q ~1 kΩ. As a result, the inductance can only be provided by a large series of Josephson junctions. Fluxonium keeps the advantage of high anharmonicity of CPB. In addition, it introduces another degree of freedom: external flux Φext. Quasiparticles (electrons or holes) tunneling at the small junction add coherently to produce a ″1+cos φ ″ term. As a result, when Φext= Φ0/2, dissipation caused by quasiparticle tunneling is suppressed and the energy relaxation time ( T 1) increases drastically. C-shunt flux qubit (CSFQ) decreases α and E J to suppress flux noise in the qubit. While the charge noise becomes the dominant noise source, a large shunt capacitor is added to suppress the charge noise, similar to that in a transmon qubit. It is worth to notice that in CSFQ, the α decreases to below but near 1/2. As a result, the double-well potential no longer exists. The energy structure become similar to transmon, with the anharmonicity be opposite. CSFQ can get a much improved coherence time, while its anharmonicity can be larger than that of transmon. Those new superconducting qubit structures provide different solutions to improve the coherence time. Although it looks much different in circuit models and parameters, they have ideas in common, and may act as guides to other novel designs with longer coherence time. We can summarize as below. (1) The qubit circuit should be free of small superconducting islands. Charge fluctuation in small islands is a major source of decoherence. As a result, increase the area of the islands, that is, increase the capacitance becomes a straight forward way to suppress the charge noise. In Fluxonium, the small junction is connected with a large series of large junctions that there is also no small islands in the whole loop. (2) Remove superconducting loops in the qubit circuit, or minimize the loop size and loop current to suppress flux noise. (3) Bias the phase difference of the small junction to π, where dissipation caused by quasiparticle tunneling can be suppressed coherently. (4) Decrease the coupling bandwidth of qubit to the environment. In a circuit-QED readout scheme, a high- Q readout resonator that dispersively coupled to the qubit protects the qubit from exposed to the electromagnetic environment of the readout circuit. A ″Purcell filter″ can also be added to suppress such decoherence further. In conclusion, we overviewed some qubit engineering techniques or ideas to improve the coherence time, which is a very important figure for building practical quantum computer/simulator. We hope that someone can combine and optimize these ideas, while interact with developments in materials and micro-fabrication technologies, to develop novel new generation superconducting qubit structures in the near future.

Entanglement swapping, the process to entangle two particles without coupling them in any way, is one of the most striking manifestations of the quantum-mechanical nonlocal characteristic. Besides fundamental interest, this process has applications in complex entanglement manipulation and quantum communication. Here we report a high-fidelity, unconditional entanglement swapping experiment in a superconducting circuit. The measured concurrence characterizing the qubit-qubit entanglement produced by swapping is above 0.75, confirming most of the entanglement of one qubit with its partner is deterministically transferred to another qubit that has never interacted with it. We further realize delayed-choice entanglement swapping, showing whether two qubits previously behaved as in an entangled state or as in a separable state is determined by a later choice of the type of measurement on their partners. Nucleation has been studied for hundreds of years and can be described by classical nucleation theory (CNT) in many cases. However, the understanding of nucleation has been limited by its short time and small size scale, which causes substantial experimental challenges in direct visualization of the nucleation process. Here, using double-aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, we show the real space imaging of the atomic level nucleation process and the evolution of nucleus in PdSi nanoparticles produced by pulsed laser deposition. Critical nucleus size, indicated by a structural transition from amorphous to crystal, is clearly observed and found to be in consistent with CNT prediction. We also show that the nano-scale nucleation process is analogous with size induced amorphization process which is confirmed by the molecular dynamics simulation.

We investigated structural, electrical and magnetic properties of epitaxial La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) thin films (20–100 nm thick) deposited by pulsed laser ablation on different substrates. Single crystalline substrates: (001) SrTiO3, (001) LaAlO3, (001) La0.26Sr0.76Al0.61Ta0.37O3 and (001) MgO were used to vary the substrate-induced epitaxial strain. The LSMO films exhibit very good crystal quality and enhanced temperatures of metal-insulator transition (TMI) as well as temperature of ferromagnetic ordering (Curie temperature, TC) up to 451 K with TMI = TC coincidence of both temperatures. The enhanced TC (TMI) values were analyzed with respect to substrate-induced strain and LSMO film thickness. We ascribe the increased TC (TMI) values to decreasing strength of electron-phonon coupling coming from Jahn-Teller splitting. The substrate-induced strain in the LSMO films only decreased the TC (TMI) values depending on magnitude of biaxial strain.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage offers significant advantages for coherent population transfer between uncoupled or weakly coupled states and has the potential of realizing efficient quantum gate, qubit entanglement and quantum information transfer. Here we report on the realization of the process in the superconducting Xmon and phase qutrits—two ladder-type three-level systems in which the ground state population is coherently transferred to the second excited state via the dark state subspace. We demonstrate that the population transfer efficiency is no less than 96% and 67% for the two devices, which agree well with the numerical simulation of the master equation. Population transfer via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage is significantly more robust against variations of the experimental parameters compared with that via the conventional resonant π pulse method. Our work opens up a new venue for exploring the process for quantum information processing using the superconducting artificial atoms., Quantum state engineering necessitates transfer between quantum states. Here the authors demonstrate coherent population transfer between un- or weakly-coupled states of solid state systems, superconducting Xmon and phase qutrits, using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage and microwave driving.

We study superconducting properties of NbN thin film samples with different thicknesses and an ultra-thin NbTiN meander nanowire sample. For the ultra-thin samples, we found that the temperature dependence of upper critical field (H c2) in parallel to surface orientation shows bending curvature close to critical temperature T c, suggesting a two-dimensional (2D) nature of the samples. The 2D behavior is further supported by the angular dependence measurements of H c2 for the thinnest samples. The temperature dependence of parallel upper critical field for the thick films could be described by a model based on the anisotropic Ginzburg–Landau theory. Interestingly, the results measured in the field perpendicular to the film surface orientation show a similar bending curvature but in a much narrow temperature region close to T c for the ultra-thin samples. We suggest that this feature could be due to suppression of pair-breaking caused by local in-homogeneity. We further propose the temperature dependence of perpendicular H c2 as a measure of uniformity of superconducting ultra-thin films. For the thick samples, we find that H c2 shows maxima for both parallel and perpendicular orientations. The H c2 peak for the perpendicular orientation is believed to be due to the columnar structure formed during the growth of the thick films. The presence of columnar structure is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, we have measured the angular dependence of magneto-resistance, and the results are consistent with the H c2 data.
