Ponding at the soil surface exerts profound impacts on infiltration. However, the effects of ponding depth on infiltration, especially the development of a saturated zone below the soil surface, have not been considered in present infiltration models. A new general Green-Ampt model solution (GAMS) was derived for a one-dimensional vertical infiltration into soils under a uniform initial moisture distribution with ponding on its surface. An expression was included in the new solution for simulating the saturated layer developed below the soil surface as long as the pressure head at the surface is greater than the water-entry suction. The GAMS simulates the infiltration processes closer to the numerical solution by HYDRUS-1D than the traditional and a recently improved Green-Ampt model. Moreover, an inversion method to improve the estimates of soil hydraulic parameters from one-dimensional vertical infiltration experiments that is based on the GAMS was suggested. The effect of ponding depth (hp), initial soil moisture content, soil texture, and hydraulic soil properties (Ks, hd and n) in the saturated zone was also evaluated. The results indicate that the saturated zone developed at a much faster rate than the unsaturated zone during infiltration. Generally, a larger saturated zone was found for soils with higher initial soil moisture content, coarser texture, higher Ks values and lower hd and n. Our findings reveal that including the saturated zone in the infiltration model yields a better estimate for the soil hydraulic parameters. The proposed GAMS model can improve irrigation design and rainfall-runoff simulations.

Accurate determination of evapotranspiration (ET) has tremendous potential in guiding irrigation and improving the efficiency of water resources utilization in the North China Plain. Eddy covariance (EC) method is currently a popular method for determining field-scale ET. However, due to varying foot print and unclosed energy balance, the applicability of EC in different regions needs to be tested and corrected. In present work, we compared the ET of the winter wheat – summer maize rotation cropland measured by the EC method with the ET measured by large-scale lysimeters on different time scales. The degree of energy balance closure of EC measurements in this region is 78%. After adjusted by using Bowen ratio forced closure method, the ET monitored by EC is comparable with those monitored by large-scale lysimeters. The results also indicated that the consistency of the observed ET by the EC and lysimeters got better with an increasing time scale, especially for the multi-year average ET values with a relative deviation of less than 1%. The short-time events such as irrigation and precipitation and the mismatch of the varying footprint area of the EC and the small fixed source area of the lysimeter should be responsible for the discrepancy of ET in two methods on daily scale. However, the factors of crop biomass, total available water, and local climate condition exert more effects on the observed ET on large time scale. Overall, the EC technique is responsible for ET measurement of winter wheat – summer maize rotation cropland of the North China Plain.

The ability of soil microorganisms to uphold a variety of ecosystem services is of increasing interest, but our understanding of the linkage between cropland ecosystem services and the soil microbiome under long-term different fertilizer regimes is still limited. Here, we measured 15 response variables commonly used as indicators of cropland ecosystem services, and employed a shotgun metagenomic sequencing technology to determine microbiome taxonomic composition and functional composition in a sandy loam soil amended with organic and inorganic fertilizers for 28 years. Long-term application of fertilizers had overall positive effects on the variables that indicate soil C and nutrient status, organic material decomposition, nutrient transformation, and plant productivity, but the strength of these effects differed between organic and inorganic fertilization. In long term, organic fertilizers significantly increased the abundance of Sphingomonas and Acidobacteria as well as genes involved in C and N metabolism and degradation of aromatic organic compounds. The observed differences in the indicators of overall biological activity, litter decomposition, nutrient transformation, cropland fertility and productivity were associated with changes in taxonomic composition and functional composition of the soil microbiome. Network analysis revealed that soil organic C, total N, L-leucine aminopeptidase, phosphatase, microbial biomass C and N, and the multifunctionality index showed strong positive associations with Acidobacterium, Lysobacter and Nitrososphaera. These microbes are implicated in the decomposition of organic material, soil C and N transformation, and plant growth promotion. The present study deepens our understanding of the relationship between the soil microbiome and agro-ecosystem functioning, and provides support for the use of organic fertilization strategy to enhance multiple ecosystem services in croplands.

This study aims to investigate the presence of aggregate hierarchy during the decomposition of rice straw in a subtropical soil (Ultisol) with large quantities of Fe and Al oxides and in two temperate soils with a large amount of montmorillonite (Vertisol) or with less organic matter but a large content of CaCO3 (Inceptisol) and to explore the relationship between relative contributions of biotic and abiotic processes in soil aggregation and the presence of aggregate hierarchy. Dielectric techniques are fundamental methods for measuring soil water content, and they commonly rely on the conventional laboratory calibration of the dielectric permittivity models between a dielectric constant and water content. As a non‐negligible factor, porosity has been constructed differently in some models as a calibration constant, but the systematic porosity variations during the laboratory model calibration and field applications are not yet well addressed. Based on time‐domain reflectometer laboratory calibration experiments, this study investigated this issue using three preestablished dielectric permittivity models: the Purdue calibration equation (American Society for Testing and Materials model [ASTM]), the complex refractive index model (CRIM), and a piecewise CRIM model (CRIMP). Results demonstrate that a generalized porosity constant used in the calibration would bring in additional structural bias compared with the calibration using variable porosities, and its magnitude varies with the model structure. The deviation of the generalized porosity constant can further amplify the structural bias of ASTM and CRIM for soils with low clay content, but it is insensitive for the soils with high clay content due to the overwhelming role of model structure error. Only the model CRIMP with a “perfect” model structure can effectively cope with the systematic porosity variation and keep a stable built‐in capability for estimating calibration constants from readily available soil data. These findings highlight ignoring porosity variation should not be taken for granted for calibrating and applying the preestablished models.

Land use change has remarkable impact on hydrological processes. However, little is known on the land use dependent variation of soil water infiltration characteristics. This study aims to investigate the effects of land use type on the spatial variation of infiltration characteristics and to identify their scale-specific controls. A total of 132 in-situ infiltration measurements were conducted using a disc infiltrometer along four 96-m transects under different land use types (forestland, shrubland, cropland with tillage, and cropland without tillage) in a typical agricultural region in north China. Classical statistics and multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) were used to explore the features of the overall and scale-specific spatial variation of four infiltration characteristics, i.e., cumulative infiltration over 30 min (I 30 ), sorptivity (S), unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (K 0 , h 0 = –2 cm) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s ). Besides, the scale-specific correlations between the infiltration characteristics and selected environmental factors, i.e., bulk density (BD), soil organic matter (SOM), initial soil water content (IWC) and water temperature (T) were investigated. The results indicated that land use type significantly affected not only the values of the infiltration characteristics but also their overall and scale-specific spatial variability. Tillage was found to have great impact on these infiltration characteristics. Generally, cropland with tillage revealed significantly higher values and weaker overall spatial variation of I 30 and S; while its K 0 and K s were significantly lower. Four major common spatial scales, i.e., 8–9 m, 13–16 m, 28–34 m and 47–94 m, were identified for the infiltration characteristics under different land use types using MEMD. The spatial variation of infiltration characteristics in forestland and shrubland were decomposed into larger common scales than that in croplands. Furthermore, the dominating factors of infiltration characteristics were scale-specific and also varied with land use type. Generally, SOM and BD were considered as important controls in smaller scales in croplands and the impacts of IWC and T were more effective in larger scales in forestland and shrubland.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the key to soil fertility and quality. However, SOC has severely declined in the past several decades due in part to inappropriate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) input levels. Thus far, the influences of N and P input levels on the accrual of different SOC fractions and relevant microbial traits at aggregate scales remain uncertain. Here, a 3-year field experiment was used to reveal the effects of N and P input levels on SOC fractions in a Mollisol. Treatments included straw return (SR) and combinations of high nitrogen (N) and high phosphorus (P) inputs (N + P + SR), high N and low P inputs (N + P1/2 + SR), and low N and high P inputs (N1/2 + P + SR). Irrigation and nitrogen (N) fertilization in excess of crop requirements are responsible for substantial nitrate accumulation in the soil profile and contamination of groundwater by nitrate leaching during intensive agricultural production. In this on-farm field trial, we compared 16 different water and N treatments on nitrate accumulation and its distribution in the soil profile (0-180cm), nitrate leaching potential, and groundwater nitrate concentration within a summer-maize (Zea mays L.) and winter-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation system in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain over five cropping cycles (2006-2010). The results indicated that nitrate remaining in the soil profile after crop harvest and nitrate concentration of soil solutions at two depths (80cm and 180cm) declined with increasing irrigation amounts and increased greatly with increasing N application rates, especially for seasonal N application rates higher than 190kgNha-1. During the experimental period, continuous torrential rainfall was the main cause for nitrate leaching beyond the root zone (180cm), which could pose potential risks for contamination of groundwater. Nitrate concentration of groundwater varied from 0.2 to 2.9mgL-1, which was lower than the limit of 10mgL-1 as the maximum safe level for drinking water. In view of the balance between grain production and environmental consequences, seasonal N application rates of 190kgNha-1 and 150kgNha-1 were recommended for winter wheat and summer maize, respectively. Irrigation to the field capacity of 0-40cm and 0-60cm soil depth could be appropriate for maize and wheat, respectively. Therefore, taking grain yields, mineral N accumulation in the soil profile, nitrate leaching potential, and groundwater quality into account, coupled water and N management could provide an opportunity to promote grain production while reducing negative environmental impacts in this region.

The Calci-Aquic Vertisols comprise one of the largest areas with low crop yields in China normally characterized with black color, high smectite contents but low organic matter contents. This study aims to establish a physical method for extracting black matter from the Calci-Aquic Vertisols, and explore the formation mechanism of black nano-organo-mineral complexes of the soils. The alternation of freezing-thawing and adding dispersant followed by oscillation and multi-level ultrasound(HOMU) method were proposed and tested to disperse soil and extract black matters from the topsoil layers (0−40 cm) and black soil layers (40−70 cm) of three Calci-Aquic Vertisols. Six different components including POM, white, light white, light black, black and nano-black were extracted successively and analyzed for blackness, organic matter content, particle gradation, mineral composition and elemental oxides. The nano-organo-mineral complexes are found be responsible for the Calci-Aquic Vertisols appearing black. Smectite (SM) absorbing organic matters mainly through cation bridges of Fe3+ and Al3+, hydrogen bond, van der Waals force formed the black nano-organo-mineral complexes which consists the main parts of the black matters in the Calci-Aquic Vertisols. Agricultural activities increased the organic matter contents in the topsoil layers, but the difference of formation environment resulted in the poorer crystallinity and higher content smectites and thus higher nano-organo-mineral complex contents and blackness in the black soil layers in the Calci-Aquic Vertisols. The result in this research is of great value for understanding the organic matter turnover and improving the productivity of the Calci-Aquic Vertisols.

The importance of soil saprotrophic fungi in agroecosystems is receiving increasing attention. However, the linkages between saprotrophic fungal communities and soil fertility and stoichiometry in agroecosystems are poorly understood. Here, four long-term field fertilization experiments with three treatments (i.e., no fertilizer (control), chemical nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilizer (NPK), chemical combined with organic fertilizer (NPKM)) were performed to evaluate the associations of saprotrophic fungal communities with the soil fertility index (SFI) and stoichiometric carbon (C):N:P ratios. Long-term NPKM application increased the SFI by 57.66%–129.50% at the four sites, and the SFI was strongly correlated with the saprotrophic fungal community composition, which indicated that exogenous organic matter improved soil fertility to a large extent and stimulated the growth of saprotrophic fungi in arable soils. The soil C:P and N:P ratios were notably decreased in the fertilization treatment, indicated that P was sufficient. Further, the composition of saprotrophic fungi was significantly related to the C:N and N:P ratios, suggested that N status is an important factor for soil saprotrophic fungal communities. Our study provides empirical evidence that the saprotrophic fungal communities in arable soils are strongly associated with soil fertility and stoichiometry and offers guidance for improving soil fertility by regulating the saprophytic fungal community.

Summary Dendrite formation is the major hurdle limiting the deployment of energy-dense Li-metal batteries, including the solid-state prototypes. Through grafting polyether amine (PEA) brushes onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets, here, we present precise control over the metallic deposits according to the preset two-dimensional (2D) geometry. The experiment and simulation results reveal that the lithiophilic ether groups of PEA not only induce uniform nuclei distribution but also tailor the ion migration pathway along the optimized polymer chain, enabling conformal deposits propagation via a bionic “seedling technology.” The regulated Li deposition behaviors are further demonstrated in an energy-dense battery (2.1 mAh, Li(Ni0.85Co0.1Al0.05)O2|PEA grafted RGO) and all-solid-state prototype (LiFePO4|PEA grafted RGO with composite electrolyte). Their encouraging cycle performance, coupled with the wide range of applicability, affords great potential to customize the geometry of Li deposits according to the preset orientations.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, an important N source to agro-ecosystems, has increased intensively in China during recent decades. However, knowledge on temporal variations of total N deposition and their influencing factors is limited due to lack of systematic monitoring data. In this study, total N deposition, including dry and wet components, was monitored using the water surrogate surface method for a typical agro-ecosystem with a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and summer maize (Zea mays L.) rotation system in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain from May 2008 to April 2012. The results indicated that annual total N deposition ranged from 23.8 kg N ha−1 (2009–2010) to 40.3 kg N ha−1 (2008–2009) and averaged 31.8 kg N ha−1. Great inter-annual variations were observed during the sampling period, due to differences in annual rainfall and gaseous N losses from farmlands. Monthly total N deposition varied greatly, from less than 0.6 kg N ha−1 (January, 2010) to over 8.0 kg N ha−1 (August, 2008), with a mean value of 2.6 kg N ha−1. In contrast to wet deposition, dry portions generally contributed more to the total, except in the precipitation-intensive months, accounting for 65% in average. NH 4 + -N was the dominant species in N deposition and its contribution to total deposition varied from 6% (December, 2009) to 79% (July, 2008), averaging 53%. The role of organic N (O–N) in both dry and wet deposition was equal to or even greater than that of NO 3 − -N. Influencing factors such as precipitation and its seasonal distribution, reactive N sources, vegetation status, field management practices, and weather conditions were responsible for the temporal variations of atmospheric N deposition and its components. These results are helpful for reducing the knowledge gaps in the temporal variations of atmospheric N deposition and their influencing factors in different ecosystems, to improve the understandings on N budget in the typical agro-ecosystem, and to provide references and recommendations for field nutrient management in this region.

Low-cost, simple, rapid and accurate approaches for measuring soil hydraulic properties are of great importance in the application of hydrologic models of the vadose zone. A recently proposed method of constant-saturation absorption (MCSA) for determining Brooks-Corey (BC) model parameters is promising. However, this method has not been tested using experimental data. In this paper, measured soil-water diffusivity or soil-water retention curves (SWRCs) of 20 soil samples were used to test the reliability of MCSA. The results indicate that MCSA consistently estimated soil-water diffusivities by the Bruce and Klute method, but it substantially overestimated air-entry suctions (h(d)) and thereby soil suction. A new method (MCPA) is proposed herein to overcome the problems associated with MCSA. Using the improved method, estimated SWRCs are consistent with observation. With the estimated soil hydraulic parameters, HYDRUS-1D generated very accurate simulations of the cumulative absorption curves. Compared with direct or other indirect methods, MCPA is a more accurate, low-cost, and simple method, and it is especially useful for rapid determination of SWRC for soil-water movement simulations. However, if unsaturated soil-water diffusivity is of greater concern, our results also indicate that MCSA more accurately predicts this quantity and thus should be preferred. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Improvement of Shajiang black soil in the Huanghuai plain is crucial for sustainable agricultural production; however, the effects of intensified fertilizer input on microbial communities in this soil type remain uncertain. Here, we conducted a long-term field trial using a wheat-soybean-maize cropping system, which had five treatments: organic material (soybean cake) (OM), mineral fertilizers (NPK), standard nitrogen (N) (half from OM and half from NPK) (MNPK), high N (1.6-fold higher than other treatments, with half from OM and half from NPK) (HMNPK), and unfertilized control. The organic carbon (C) composition of the soil was analyzed by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and bacterial community structure was determined based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. Agricultural fertilization plays a crucial role in crop production, and the fungal communities catalyze transformation of soil nutrients in support of crop production. However, it remains controversial about the optimal strategy for fertilizer inputs and the adaptive mechanisms of fungal communities across China. By using seven long-term field fertilization experiments in China, we analyzed crop yields, soil properties and fungal communities in soils that were treated for > 25 years with no fertilizer (control), inorganic fertilizers (NPK) and organic-inorganic fertilizers (NPKM). Long-term NPK resulted in significant acidification up to a decline by 1.20 pH units, while NPKM prevented acidification and increased pH up to 6.39 in three acidic soils with pH 8.11, both NPK and NPKM led to only marginal decline of soil pH, and NPK and NPKM showed comparable crop yields. Some members of Ascomycota in alkaline soils were both enriched by NPKM and NPK. Soil available P and C:N ratio, rather than pH, directly or indirectly affect crop yield in alkaline soils. High crop yield can be achieved by the sole use of inorganic fertilizers in alkaline soils, but acidic soil productivity should be maintained by organic amendment to counteract acidification by inorganic fertilization. Our study advances a mechanistic understanding for optimizing fertilization strategies towards sustainable agriculture under increasingly intensified fertilizer inputs.

Succession and metabolism functions of bacterial communities were determined in maize straw composting with earthworm casts and zeolite addition by using high-throughput sequencing, Biolog and PICRUSt. Results showed that earthworm casts and zeolite addition increased the temperature, decreased NH4+ contents and affected bacterial community structure. The relative abundances of Firmicutes and Betaproteobacteria increased with earthworm casts and zeolite addition in the late stage. The abundances of genes related to carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and energy metabolism were increased by these two additives in the early stage, but decreased in the late stage. Network analysis demonstrated that members of Bacillaceae were identified as the keystone taxa. Temperature showed negative relationship with Georgenia, while NH4+ exhibited positive associations with Georgenia, Devosia, Ruania and Mycobacterium. These results indicated that earthworm casts and zeolite addition benefitted the keystone species and enhanced the metabolism capacity of bacterial community, thereby improved the quality of compost.

Soil organic matter (SOM) and interparticle forces, including the electrostatic repulsive force (ERF), surface-hydration repulsive force (SHRF) and van der Waals attractive force (vDWAF), play crucial roles in aggregate stability. However, few studies investigated their coupled effects on aggregate stability in variably charged soils, in which soil particle interactions are more complex than in permanently charged soils due to the coexistence of positive and negative charges and the variable surface charge characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to: 1) investigate the combined effects of soil solution pH and the overlapping of electric double layers (EDLs) between positively charged Fe/Al (hydro)oxides and negatively charged SOM on the ERF and aggregate stability before (control) and after SOM removal and after straw incubation for 240 days; and 2) evaluate the importance of soil interparticle forces and SOM for aggregate stability in a permanently charged temperate soil (Vertisol) and a variably charged subtropical soil (Ultisol). Pot experiments are a low-cost and easy-to-use technique for studies of soil evaporation and plant transpiration in controlled environments. However, little attention has been paid to the applicability of evapotranspiration (ET) measured in pot experiments to the field. The objective of this study was to determine whether a pot experiment can be used for measuring field ET. Evapotranspiration experiments with winter wheat and summer maize were conducted in pots and lysimeters under various water-deficit conditions. The measured ET values in the pot experiments under different water conditions were considerably different from those of the lysimeters. Causes of such differences in ET were analyzed, and a series of corrections were proposed to eliminate the effects of different crop densities, representative areas per plant, and soil moisture conditions on pot experiment results. After these corrections, the discrepancy in the total ET of wheat-maize seasons between pots and lysimeters was greatly reduced from a maximum of 117% to only approximately 10%. The relative mean square errors (RMSEs) for daily ET values also decreased from a maximum value of 4.56 mm to less than 1.5 mm for the wheat season and from a maximum value of 6.02 mm to approximately 2 mm for the maize season. Possible measures were proposed to further improve the accuracy of the corrected ET obtained from pot experiments. In sum, pot experiments can serve as a feasible tool for estimating ET in the field just with a few routine measurements at regions where large-scale weighing lysimeters, an eddy covariance device, and even meteorological data are not available. The proposed corrections can also be used for upscaling small-scale ET measurements to a large scale.

The North China Plain (NCP) is a strategic grain production base in China with a wild distribution of fertile soils. During the past 20 years, high-input intensive agriculture with excess chemical fertilizer application has sustained high grain yields, but may have resulted in contamination of some elements in farmland. In this study, the accumulation and transfer of arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) in typical Calcaric Fluvisols with long-term different fertilization practices were investigated. Field experiments with seven treatments were launched in 1989, and soil and plant samples were collected and analyzed periodically. The treatments include OM (organic manure), OM + NPK (50 % organic manure + 50 % chemical fertilizer), NPK, NP, PK, NK, and CK (the control experiment with no fertilizer). With over 20 years (1989–2009) of cultivation, various extents of As and Hg accumulations were really observed in the soil. The higher As and Hg contents were found in P fertilizers than those in N, K, or OM fertilizers. As a result, the long-term P fertilization slightly promoted Hg accumulations with decreased soil Hg concentrations in the order of NPK ≈ NP ≈ PK ≈ OM + NPK > OM > NK ≈ CK, which was similar to the order of crop yields. At the tillage layer (0–20 cm), Hg accumulation in the soil was enhanced by crop production, due to the highly accumulated Hg in plant roots finally remained in the soil. However, no significant differences of soil As concentrations can be found between treatments with and without P fertilizers probably due to water leaching and plant uptake. Soil As and Hg were mainly contributed by fertilizers, irrigation, and atmospheric deposition in recent years, but they did not exhibit in significant accumulations in the soil. The Green–Ampt model (GAM) is a widely used water infiltration model. However, it lacks a reliable theoretical basis to independently and simultaneously determine the GAM parameters of effective hydraulic conductivity (Kₑ) and the average matric pressure head at the wetting front (Hf) from those commonly measured soil hydraulic properties. In this paper, we derived an approximate analytical solution similar to GAM for one-dimensional vertical infiltration into soils with initially uniform soil moisture distribution, with Kₑ and Hf being simultaneously related to the Brooks–Corey (BC) model parameters. The new relationships are not restricted to the piston-type moisture profile or delta-type water diffusivity like in the traditional GAM (TGAM). Infiltration experiments on three soils of various textures were conducted to validate the new approximate analytical solution and the corresponding GAM parameters. It was demonstrated that the predicted cumulative infiltrations and soil moisture profiles by the GAM with Kₑ and Hf calculated by the new expressions (new GAM, NGAM) generally agreed well with the numerical solutions, especially for initially dry soils. In contrast, cumulative infiltrations were considerably over-predicted by the TGAM using Kₑ = Kₛ and Hf calculated by Neuman’s equation. Our theoretical analysis further indicated that even without air entrapped during infiltration, the effective hydraulic conductivity can still be less than the saturated hydraulic conductivity Kₛ. The relative effective hydraulic conductivity ζ (Kₑ/Kₛ) and the relative average matric pressure head at the wetting front η (-Hf/hd where hd is absolute value of the air-entry suction) show a dependency only on soil pore structure index (n) and effective initial soil-water saturation (Sᵢ). The values of ζ increased but η decreased with Sᵢ and n. The theoretical ranges of ζ and η were from 0.5 and 2 for dry heavy-texture soils to 1 and 0 for saturated soils, respectively, which are consistent with the experimental values reported in literatures.

Gaseous nitrogen (N) losses are mainly responsible for low N use efficiency of applied fertilizers and their derivative environmental hazards, while N application rates and soil water regime are important factors regulating these N processes. In this study, gaseous N losses via ammonia volatilization (AV) and denitrification, determined by sponge trapping-KCl extraction and acetylene inhibition-soil core incubation, respectively, were investigated under different coupled water-N management practices with a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and summer maize (Zea mays L.) rotation system in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Ammonia volatilization after urea application, particularly after topdressing during maize growing seasons, was the dominant gaseous N loss, amounting up to 53.2 kg N ha−1 (38.6 % of the applied N). Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been widely considered as an important N input into agroecosystems, but its measurement involves considerable uncertainties with various methods. In this study, a field sampler with distilled water as a surrogate surface was developed and trialed for the collection of dry and wet N deposition. The direct measuring results were compared with the value calculated by the N mass balance method (crop N uptake from plots receiving no N fertilizers of the long-term fertilization experiment in the monitoring station). The results indicated that exposure durations of 3–5 days and water volumes of 2000–2800 ml were tested to be suitable to collect dry N deposition, while water volumes of less than 1000 ml and sampling conducted immediately after rain event were found to be appropriate for wet N collection under the present experimental conditions. The monitoring work was conducted from June 2008 to May 2009, and annual N deposition totaled up to 40.32 kg N ha −1 , of which dry deposition accounted for 62.45%. NH 4 –N was the dominant species in N deposition and contributed 62.68% and 66.00% to wet and dry deposition, respectively. Organic N (O-N) was found to make greater contributions than NO 3 –N in both dry and wet depositions. Total N deposition was parallel to the results estimated by the method of mass N balance from the long-term experiment, as 45.6 kg N ha −1 . These results provide helpful knowledge to elucidate the N deposition scenario of a typical agroecosystem and can be of great importance for the calculation of fertilizer recommendations in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain.

Soil unsaturated hydraulic properties are an important input for simulations of water and solute movement in the vadose zone. However, in the case of soils containing rock fragments, direct measurement of unsaturated hydraulic properties remains difficult. Recently, an analytical method was proposed (Ma et al., 2009) for determining soil hydraulic properties from horizontal water absorption experiments. Here, we test if this method could be used in the determination of the hydraulic properties of stony soils with a set of experiments. The results show that the method can predict accurately and quickly the hydraulic parameters of stony soils using the cumulative infiltration volume and the rate of wetting front advancement during water absorption into a horizontal soil column. The influence of rock fragment content on some soil hydraulic properties including air entry suction, saturated hydraulic conductivity and the shape coefficients of hydraulic functions was further evaluated. Both air entry suction and shape coefficient show a large range of variation with rock fragment content. Globally, the saturated hydraulic conductivities of stony soils decreased with increasing rock fragment content. However, when the volumetric rock fragment content is about 0.08 cm(3) cm(-3), the stony soil displayed a greater saturated hydraulic conductivity compared to the fine earth at 95% confidence level. The relationship between saturated hydraulic conductivity and rock fragment content is not accurately estimated by different equations relating saturated hydraulic conductivity of stony soils to that of non-stony soils. Soils containing rock fragments are widely distributed in the world. However, literature on the dynamic simulation of water movement in stony soils is scarce. In this paper, a dual-porosity model was used to simulate water infiltration into soils containing rock fragments. Sensitivity analysis of the dual-porosity model parameters demonstrates that the increase of rock fragment content clearly decreased infiltration into stony soils. Big stones hampered infiltration more than small stones. Spherical stones accelerated infiltration compared with solid, cylindrical stones and rectangular, slab-like stones. Numerical analysis was also performed to test and compare a non-equilibrium dual-porosity model (NDPM) with an equilibrium dual-porosity model (EDPM) and an equilibrium single-pore model (ESPM). Infiltration experiments on disturbed soils were carried out to verify the ability of the NDPM to simulate infiltration into stony soils. Based on hydraulic parameters of soils without rock fragments and mass transfer coefficients obtained independently, the extrapolated cumulative infiltrations calculated by the NDPM were in good agreement with the observed data. Fitted model parameters of the NDPM indicate that rock fragments not only act as a source or sink to affect infiltration but also change the pore structure of the fine earth, apart from reducing the cross-sectional area for water flow. Though further studies are required to improve the dual-porosity model, it already describes more characteristics of infiltration into stony soils and explains more phenomena than does the single-porosity model.

Potassium (K+) deficiency as a common abiotic stress can inhibit the growth of plants and thus reduce the agricultural yields. Nevertheless, scarcely any development has been promoted in wheat transcriptional changes under K+ deficiency. Here we investigated root transcriptional changes in two wheat genotypes, namely, low-K+ tolerant “Tongzhou916” and low-K+ susceptible “Shiluan02-1”. There were totally 2713 and 2485 probe sets displayed expression changes more than 1.5-fold in Tongzhou916 and Shiluan02-1, respectively. Low-K+ responsive genes mainly belonged to the categories as follows: metabolic process, cation binding, transferase activity, ion transporters and so forth. We made a comparison of gene expression differences between the two wheat genotypes. There were 1321 and 1177 up-regulated genes in Tongzhou916 and Shiluan02-1, respectively. This result indicated that more genes took part in acclimating to low-K+ stress in Tongzhou916. In addition, there were more genes associated with jasmonic acid, defense response and potassium transporter up-regulated in Tongzhou916. Moreover, totally 19 genes encoding vacuolar H+-pyrophosphatase, ethylene-related, auxin response, anatomical structure development and nutrient reservoir were uniquely up-regulated in Tongzhou916. For their important role in root architecture, K+ uptake and nutrient storage, unique genes above may make a great contribution to the strong low-K+ tolerance in Tongzhou916.

A simple two-step microkinetic model for the high-temperature water−gas shift was developed using existing experimental data. This two-step redox model uses only three adjustable parameters, and it is capable of predicting the inhibitory effect of CO2 on the kinetics of the reaction. It was used to simulate the performance of an adiabatic membrane reactor for the water−gas shift where the membrane is based on Pd. The simulations show that excess steam in the feed is desirable to control the adiabatic temperature rise; a 3:1 ratio of steam to carbon monoxide was found to be near optimum. The simulations further suggest that the rate of reaction is the limiting process in the membrane reactor, not the permeation of hydrogen through the membrane. At 90% hydrogen yield, finding a perfect membrane would only reduce the reactor size by 12%, whereas eliminating the inhibitory effect of CO2 would reduce the reactor size by 76%.

Recently, a method based on the soil water flux ( F )–saturation (Θ) relationship, F (Θ), assumed to be independent of time and soil properties, has become an important technique to simplify solving Richards’ equation so as to develop a simple, rapid, and low-cost approach to estimate soil hydraulic properties. However, the actual F (Θ) is soil pore-structure dependent. So far, there exists no theory that can provide a specific functional form of soil pore-structure-dependent F (Θ). In this research, we derived a general soil moisture profile function and then a general expression of F (Θ): F = Θ[1 + a 2 (1 − )]. The only parameter in F (Θ), a 2 , is a function of the initial soil water saturation and the soil pore structure index that reflects the shape of the soil water retention curve. Infiltration experiments with three test soils and four actual soils were conducted to test the proposed relationships. The results verified the independence of F (Θ) on time at small time scales. The results also indicated that the derived formula predicted F (Θ) in good agreement with what was measured for all test soils under different initial soil moisture conditions. In addition, the upper and lower limit curves of F (Θ) calculated by the proposed formula were consistent with the theoretical curves. Compared with other empirical relationships, the new formula was the best for describing the theoretical upper limit curve of F (Θ). Furthermore, the new theoretical relationship was also found to be appropriate for horizontal absorption. Generally, the developed relationship is more accurate and helpful to solve Richards’ equation.
