In recent years, in order to improve the fuel efficiency of electric vehicles, a lot of research has been conducted to adopt photovoltaic (PV) systems to electric vehicles. In addition, various Differential Power Processing (DPP) converters that can mitigate power imbalance among submodules in PV systems are being studied and developed. However, most conventional DPP converters suffer from large volume, low-price competitiveness, and low efficiency. Therefore, in this paper proposes a novel DPP converter. The proposed DPP converter can significantly reduce the volume of converter by integrating multiple transformers into single transformer. Moreover, because of the active clamp structure, it is possible to eliminate secondary side circuits. Furthermore, more than 95% efficiency under 10-60% load and maximum 96.654% efficiency about 20% load were achieved. Thus, the proposed DPP converter can achieve high power density, high price competitiveness, as well as high efficiency. To support the validity of the proposed converter, a prototype of the proposed DPP converter was built, and experiments were proceeded with 8V input and 60W/30V output specifications.

In this study, the inductor optimization design is performed by applying the Pareto optimization technique. As environmental problems emerge, the electric vehicle market is expanding, and accordingly, volume reduction and high efficiency of the onboard charger (OBC) are required. An OBC consists of a PFC stage and a DC/DC stage. The inductor is a major component in a converter and affects the volume and efficiency of the entire converter system. However, reducing the volume of the inductor leads to an increase in loss due to an increase in the change in flux density. Therefore, it is important to derive a suitable design for the target between the two parameters in the trade-off of loss and volume. This paper introduces the optimal design algorithm for boosting inductors of PFC converters in terms of volume and loss. Volume and loss are difficult to compare with each other, making it difficult to set weights. Therefore, Pareto optimization was applied which can be selected according to the needs and purposes of the decision-maker, without weighting as an optimization method. Through a series of procedures of applying Pareto optimization to the inductor design, several optimal inductor designs can be derived. At this time, the optimal designs become a set of designs in which the loss does not decrease without an increase in volume, or the volume does not decrease without an increase in loss. A designer can select a design with an appropriate volume and loss that meets the purpose of the design or preference. Therefore, through the proposed method, the inductor can be flexibly designed according to the target of the application. The proposed algorithm is applied to the interleaved totem-pole bridgeless boost PFC converter, to review its effectiveness. As a result, several inductor designs are derived in the search space, and various optimal designs are visualized through the Pareto Frontier. This facilitates comparative analysis of various inductor designs and helps designers select reasonable inductors. The validity was verified by selecting one of the obtained optimal inductor designs and driving the experiment with the resulting inductor.

High concentrations of aerosols associated with various meteorological phenomena show different physical characteristics. Because these phenomena are differentiated based on the visibility observed with the eyes, the observation may be unreliable. To investigate aerosol physical properties across various meteorological phenomena and develop an algorithm to classify high-concentration aerosol events, each phenomenon was assessed by analyzing the aerosol number and mass concentrations according to particle size observed with an optical particle counter. Furthermore, the optimal probability density function for each phenomenon was derived using the mass concentration by diameter. In addition, total aerosol mass concentrations, geometric mean particle diameters, and geometric standard deviations were calculated. In the coarse mode, the total mass concentration of the Asian dust case was the highest (16.3 μg·cm−3), whereas in the accumulation mode, the haze value was greatest (22.86 μg·cm−3). Average diameters were 4.41 and 0.41 μm in the coarse and accumulation modes, respectively. A classification algorithm for high-concentration aerosol phenomena was proposed based on the determined physical properties, results of simulating long-distance transport using a backward trajectory model, and meteorological conditions. Among the nine verification cases, all the cases coincided with the observation results of the Korea Meteorological Administration.

In this study, high-resolution quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) in lagged runs with a cloud-resolving model are evaluated for three typhoons in the Philippines: Mangkhut (2018), Koppu (2015), and Melor (2015), hitting northern Luzon, central Luzon, and the middle section of the Philippine archipelago, respectively. In Part I of this study, the QPFs were verified using 56 gauge observations on land over the Philippines. Here, in Part II, they are verified against the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite estimates (also covering nearby oceans), using categorical scores in the same way. For each typhoon, rainfall valid at a selected 24 h period and the whole event (48 or 72 h) is examined. For 24 h rainfall inside the short range (lead time ≤ 72 h), good QPFs (with a threat score of ≥0.2) were produced for Koppu at 200 mm by almost all runs, and at 100 mm by all runs for Mangkhut, but only 22% of the runs for Melor. At longer lead times, good QPFs at 100 mm were also produced by all runs for Koppu, half of the runs for Mangkhut, and only 1 out of 16 runs for Melor. For whole events (48 or 72 h), the QPFs were similarly the best for Koppu, followed by Mangkhut, and least ideal for Melor. The quality of the GPM data during the three typhoons was found to be generally good and suitable for QPF verification, and the results were more stable and, thus, more reliable for the assessment of bias. However, the threat scores using the GPM dropped lower at high thresholds, and the results could become different from those obtained against the gauges (Part I), suggesting a much higher skill. Thus, verification using rain gauges is still needed toward high thresholds, especially over mountain regions where satellite estimates tend to exhibit larger errors.

This paper proposes an active-clamp forward-flyback (ACFF) converter with an integrated planar transformer for wide-input voltage and high-output current applications, such as low-voltage direct-current (LDC) converters in electric vehicles. An integrated planar transformer that consists of a forward-flyback transformer, single primary winding, and efficient structure of secondary windings is adopted for the proposed converter, and since this transformer is implemented with a common four-layer printed circuit board (PCB) winding, a high power density and low cost of the proposed converter can be achieved. In addition, due to the low leakage inductance induced by the planar transformer, a reduced commutation period can be achieved, and it is possible to increase the switching frequency resulting in low volume of transformer. Although the integrated planar transformer has relatively high conduction loss, the active-clamp topology can significantly reduce the conduction loss on switches compared with widely used full-bridge (FB) converters because it only utilizes two switches and shows the low circulating current. As a result, the proposed converter with an integrated planar transformer has strengths in high power density and cost competitiveness without degraded efficiency, and it is a very attractive topology for LDC converters and other applications that require wide-input voltage and high-output current.

To investigate the variation in aerosol particles removed by rainfall, we determined the relationship between aerosols and raindrops observed on Jeju Island, Korea, during a heavy rainfall period (Changma) from 1–15 July 2012. Various instruments, including an aerodynamic particle sizer, rain gauge, and disdrometer, were installed at the Gosan meteorological observation site on Jeju Island. During the Changma period, precipitation between 0.7 and 25.4 mm per day was recorded, and large variations in aerosol and raindrop size distributions were observed. Aerosol removal by precipitation was indicated, and its scavenging effect was confirmed from the results. Three major parameters (Brownian diffusion, interception, and impaction) described the collision efficiency based on aerosol and raindrop size distributions. The variations in the scavenging coefficient and below-cloud scavenging rate produced similar results for the accumulated rain amount. Therefore, these field observations explained the relationship between aerosol and raindrop size distributions.

The precipitation systems that pass over mountains develop rapidly due to the forcible ascent caused by the topography, and spatial rainfall distribution differences occur due to the local development of the system because of the topography. In order to reduce the damage caused by orographic rainfall, it is essential to provide rainfall field data with high spatial rainfall accuracy. In this study, the rainfall estimation relationship was calculated using drop size distribution data obtained from 10 Parsivel disdrometers that were installed along the long axis of Mt. Halla (oriented west–east; height: 1950 m; width: 78 km; length: 35 km) on Jeju Island, South Korea. An ensemble rainfall estimation relationship was obtained using the HSA (harmony search algorithm). Through the linear combination of the rainfall estimation relationships determined by the HSA, the weight values of each relationship for each rainfall intensity were optimized. The relationships considering KDP, such as R(KDP) and R(ZDR, KDP), had higher weight values at rain rates that were more than 10 mm h−1. Otherwise, the R(ZH) and R(ZH, ZDR) weights, not considering KDP, were predominant at rain rates weaker than 5 mm h−1. The ensemble rainfall estimation method was more accurate than the rainfall that was estimated through an independent relationship. To generate the rain field that reflected the differences in the rainfall distribution according to terrain altitude and location, the spatial correction value was calculated by comparing the rainfall obtained from the dual-polarization radar and AWS observations. The distribution of Mt. Halla’s rainfall correction values showed a sharp difference according to the changes in the topographical elevation. As a result, it was possible to calculate the optimal rain field for the orographic rainfall through the ensemble of rainfall relationships and the spatial rainfall correction process. Using the proposed methodology, it is possible to create a rain field that reflects the regional developmental characteristics of precipitation.

To analyze the difference in the microphysical development characteristics of orographic rainfall, several Parsivel disdrometers were installed along the windward and leeward slope of a mountain. There were differences in the raindrop size distribution according to the difference in height and distance from the center of the mountain. In low-altitude coastal areas and adjacent areas, the number concentration of raindrops smaller than 1 mm was relatively lower than in mountainous areas, and the rain rate increased with the growth in the size of the raindrops. On the other hand, a higher rain rate was observed as the number concentration of raindrops smaller than 1 mm increased in the hillside area. The increase in the number concentration of small raindrops was evident at the LCL (lifting condensation level) altitude. The main factors affecting the increase in the rain rate on the windward and leeward slopes were the concentration of raindrops and the growth of raindrops, which showed regional differences. As a result of a PCA (principal component analysis), it was found that raindrop development by vapor deposition and weak convection were the main rainfall development characteristics on the windward and leeward slopes, respectively. The difference in regional precipitation development characteristics in mountainous areas affects the parameters of the rainfall estimation relational expression. This means that the rainfall relation calculated through the disdrometer observation data observed in a specific mountainous area can cause spatial and quantitative errors.

In this study, 24 h quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) in Taiwan at the ranges of day 1 (0–24 h), day 2 (24–48 h), and day 3 (48–72 h) by a cloud-resolving model are examined using categorical statistics, targeted mainly for the most-rainy 24 h from 10 typhoon cases between 2010 and 2015, following two earlier studies that evaluated the overall performance for all the typhoons that hit Taiwan from 2010 to 2012 and through 2015. In the selected examples with a peak amount of 322 to 1110 mm, the QPFs by the model (with a grid size of 2.5 km) are shown to be of very high quality for two typhoons (Soulik and Soudelor), and fairly good quality for three cases (Fanapi, Megi, and Fung-Wong) up to day 3 and for four others (Saola, Kong-Rey, Nanmadol, and Tembin) within day 2, respectively. The results are more variable for the one remaining case of Matmo, also impressive on day 1 but degraded at longer ranges. Overall, the quality of the QPFs ranges from excellent to satisfactory for all the typhoons studied as the threat score can achieve 0.2 at thresholds fairly close to the observed peak amount in some typhoons, or at least about half of it in most others. Since the majority of the typhoons produced the greatest rainfall amounts over the mountains in Taiwan due to the topographic effect, in agreement with many previous studies, the QPF skills by the model, often extending into high thresholds, as demonstrated, suggest that heavy rainfall from typhoons in Taiwan is generally of high predictability if and when the model has an adequate resolution.

On 2 April 2007, a strong bow echo struck southern Taiwan, with a peak surface wind speed of 26 m s−1. On observation, the rear inflow jet (RIJ) was located at the northern flank and only one anticyclonic vortex dominated behind the bow structure. This case was different from commonly occurring cyclonic–anticyclonic pairs of bookend vortices, and was investigated through data analysis, model simulation, and vorticity budget diagnostics. The present bow echo formed at the leading edge of a cold front, with favorable ingredients of instability, large west-southwesterly vertical wind shear, and dry air aloft. Farther behind the front, however, stable conditions could not support deep convection and the portion north of the RIJ was therefore missing. Within a frontal flow structure, the developing mechanism of the anticyclonic vortex also differed from typical cases. As the low-level (west-southwesterly) vertical shear pointed from right to left of the line, and the tilting effect of updrafts generated positive (negative) vorticity at the front (rear) side. South of and below the RIJ, the anticyclonic vorticity was enhanced by the stretching and tilting effect of system-generated horizontal vorticity via a sinking motion. These sources of vorticity were then advected downward and southwestward by the postfrontal flow near the surface.

In recent years, to increase the fuel efficiency of environment-friendly vehicles, a large volume of research is ongoing regarding applying photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, in PV systems, a power imbalance between submodules is common due to shading or pollution, and this degrades the power generation efficiency of the system. To solve this problem, various differential power processing (DPP) converters have been developed. In order to adopt the DPP converter to environment-friendly vehicles, the DPP converter must have a small volume, high efficiency, and high price competitiveness. In this regard, we propose a DPP converter with a single multi-winding transformer by integrating multiple transformers and secondary sides of the conventional flyback DPP converter. Since the proposed DPP converter can be applied to battery balancing circuits as well as photovoltaic systems, the proposed circuit is a valuable converter. In the PV system, the maximum output power of each submodule is 60 W, and the total PV system is 240 W by connecting four submodules in series. To verify the validity of the proposed DPP converter, a prototype with 8 V input and 60 W/30 V output specification was built and tested, and the effectiveness of the proposed converter is supported by the experimental results.

During 19–20 October 2004, a series of spectacular arc-shaped rainbands developed south or southeast of southwestern Japan when Typhoon Tokage (TY0423) approached the region from the southwest. As the typhoon moved closer and the upstream Froude number (Fr) continued to increase, these rainbands first remained quasi-stationary but eventually retreated backward. Using the Nagoya University Cloud-Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS) at 1-km grid size, these rainbands were successfully simulated, and their behavior during the transition period from a relatively low-Fr to a high-Fr regime was investigated and compared with idealized two-dimensional (2D) model results from theoretical studies. In the present case, the rainbands were found to develop along a low-level frontal convergence zone between the southerly flow associated with the typhoon and the northerly flow from the Sea of Japan. The northeasterly winds accelerated through gaps between topography and fed the offshore flow at the backside of the rainbands, producing a strong resistance that allowed the rainbands to remain stationary under significantly higher Fr values (at least 1.2) than predicted by 2D simulations (of about 0.3–0.5) for the retreat to occur in conditionally unstable flow with a convective available potential energy of about 1300 J kg−1. Typically ≤ 500 m in depth with a potential temperature (θ) deficit of 2–4 K across the rainband, the cooler offshore flow was also found to be enhanced by evaporative cooling as in some other events. The cooling effect helped the rainbands to hold their position until Fr of the upstream flow became too large, and the rainband with stronger cooling behind was able to withstand a higher Fr before retreat. Once the retreat started, the offshore layer became thinner and the θ deficit also reduced, and the rainbands were washed back by the strengthening upcoming flow.

The current study summarizes the raindrop size distributions (RSDs) characteristic of the North Indian Ocean (NIO) tropical cyclones (TCs) measured with ground-based disdrometers installed at the coastal (Thiruvananthapuram, 8.5335°N, 76.9047°E) and inland (Kadapa, 14.4742°N, 78.7098°E) stations in south India. The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled “Three-dimensional analysis of the initial stage of convective precipitation using an operational X-band polarimetric radar network” [1]. The data presented were obtained using a three-dimensional constant-altitude plan-position-indicator (3D CAPPI), which was generated by a new method proposed by [1]. The data used to create the 3D CAPPI were derived from two X-band polarimetric radar installations in the Kanto region of Japan, Ebina (139.39°E, 35.40°N), and Shin-yokohama (139.60°E, 35.51°N). These data are superior to operational radar data in terms of their temporal and spatial resolution. These high resolution data can indicate a rapidly developing storm, such as localized precipitation. It is particularly important to understand the early stages of storms in terms of numerical and short-term models. These data show the time of appearance, life cycle, and evolution of each cell that constitutes a storm in three-dimensional detail. This study describes a recently developed object-oriented method suitable for Taiwan for the purpose to verify quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) produced by mesoscale models as a complement to the traditional approaches in existence. Using blended data from the rain-gauge network in Taiwan and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) as the observation, the method developed herein is applied to twice-daily 0–48 h QPFs produced by the Cloud-Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS) during the South-West Monsoon Experiment (SoWMEX) in May–June 2008. In this method, rainfall objects are identified through a procedure that includes smoothing and thresholding. Various attribute parameters and the characteristics of observed and forecast rain-area objects are then compared and discussed. Both the observed and the QPF frequency distributions of rain-area objects with respect to total water production, object size, and rainfall are similar to chi-distribution, with highest frequency at smaller values and decreased frequencies toward greater values. The model tends to produce heavier rainfall than observation, while the latter exhibits a higher percentage of larger objects with weaker rainfall intensity. The distributions of shape-related attributes are similar between QPF and observed rainfall objects, with more northeast–southwest oriented and fewer northwest–southeast oriented objects. Both observed and modeled object centroid locations have relative maxima over the terrain of Taiwan, indicating reasonable response to the topography. The above results are consistent with previous studies.

In this study, the performances of Mei-yu (May–June) quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) in Taiwan by three mesoscale models: the Cloud-Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS), the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), and the CWB Non-hydrostatic Forecast System (NFS) are explored and compared using an newly-developed object-oriented verification method, with particular focus on the various properties or attributes of rainfall objects identified. Against a merged dataset from ~400 rain gauges in Taiwan and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data in the 2008 season, the object-based analysis is carried out to complement the subjective analysis in a parallel study. The Mei-yu QPF skill is seen to vary with different aspects of rainfall objects among the three models. The CReSS model has a total rainfall production closest to the observation but a large number of smaller objects, resulting in more frequent and concentrated rainfall. In contrast, both WRF and NFS tend to under-forecast the number of objects and total rainfall, but with a higher proportion of bigger objects. Location errors inferred from object centroid locations appear in all three models, as CReSS, NFS, and WRF exhibit a tendency to simulate objects slightly south, east, and northwest with respect to the observation. Most rainfall objects are aligned close to an E–W direction in CReSS, in best agreement with the observation, but many towards the NE–SW direction in both WRF and NFS. For each model, the objects are matched with the observed ones, and the results of the matched pairs are also discussed. Overall, though preliminarily, the CReSS model, with a finer grid size, emerges as best performing model for Mei-yu QPFs.

Tools to identify and classify stratiform and convective rains at various times of the 12 days from June 2015 to March 2016 in Jincheon, Korea, were developed by using a Parsivel disdrometer and S-band polarimetric (S-POL) radar data. Stratiform and convective rains were identified using three different methods (vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR), the method proposed by Bringi et al. (BR03), and a combination of the two (BR03-VPR)) by using a Parsivel disdrometer for its applications to radar as a reference. BR03-VPR exhibits a better classification scheme than the VPR and BR03 methods. The rain types were compared using the drop size distribution (DSD) retrieved from polarimetric variables and reflectivity only. By using the DSD variables, a new convective/stratiform classification line of the log-normalized droplet number concentration ( log 10 N w ) − median volume diameter ( D 0 ) was derived for this area to classify the rainfall types using DSD variables retrieved from the polarimetric radar. For the radar variables, the method by Steiner et al. (SHY95) was found to be the best method, with 0.00% misclassification of the stratiform rains. For the convective rains, the DSD retrieval method performed better. However, for both stratiform and convective rains, the fuzzy method performed better than the SHY95 and DSD retrieval methods.

In the summer rainy season, the Korean Peninsula is frequently influenced by severe weather phenomena such as floods and rain-induced landslides. A band-shaped precipitation system associated with unstable atmospheric conditions occurred over northwest Korea on 27 July 2011. This precipitation system produced heavy rainfall over the Seoul metropolitan area, which received over 80 mm h−1 of rainfall and suffered 70 weather-related fatalities. To investigate the precipitation system, we used diverse meteorological data of environmental condition and estimated three-dimensional wind field from dual-Doppler radar measurements of vertical air motion. Environmental conditions included high equivalent potential temperature (θe) of over 355 K at low levels, and low θe of under 330 K at middle levels, causing vertical instability. Furthermore, a pressure trough was located to the northwest of Korea, favouring the development of the band-shaped precipitation system. The tip of the band-shaped precipitation system was made up of line-shaped convective systems (LSCSs) that caused flooding and landslides, and the LSCSs were continuously enhanced by merging between new cells and the pre-existing cell. The position of merging moved from the coast to offshore areas and influenced the positioning of the regions of enhanced convection. In turn, this affected the roughness of the convective cell and the internal structure of the enhanced convective regions. Onshore, the convective area was higher than in offshore areas because of strong convergence (≤−4×10−4 s−1) at low levels caused by friction over land. The strong convergence generated strong updraft (≥4 m s−1) that influenced the height of the convective area. The convective region offshore was wider than that onshore because of weak convergence (≥−2.2×10−4 s−1) at low levels. Updraft in offshore areas was weak (≤3 m s−1) compared with onshore, resulting in a lower and wider convective area. Spatial variations in surface roughness result in different structural features and profiles of divergence within LSCSs, even if they originate in the same convective region.

A series of idealised experiments using a cloud-resolving storm simulator (CReSS) was performed to investigate the effects of the isolated elliptically shaped terrain of Jeju Island (oriented east–west), southern Korea, on the enhancement of pre-existing rainfall systems under the influence of prevailing southwesterly moist flows. Control parameters were the low-altitude wind speed (Froude numbers: 0.2, 0.4, 0.55) and the initial location of the elongated (oriented north–east) rainfall system (off the northwestern or western shores of the island). Simulations were conducted for all combinations of initial location and wind regime. Overall, results indicate that weak southwesterlies flowing around the steep mountain on the island (height, 2 km) generate two local convergences, on the northern lateral side and on the lee side of the island, both in regions of moist environments, thus producing conditions favourable for enhanced rainfall. As an eastward-moving rainfall system approaches the northwestern shore of the island, the southwesterlies at low altitudes accelerate between the system and the terrain, generating a local updraft region that causes rainfall enhancement onshore in advance of the system's arrival over the terrain. Thus, the prevailing southwesterlies at low altitudes that are parallel to the terrain are a crucial element for the enhancement. Relatively weak southwesterlies at low altitudes allow system enhancement on the lee side by generating a convergence of relatively weak go-around northwesterlies from the northern island and relatively strong moist southwesterlies from the southern island, thus producing a relatively long-lived rainfall system. As the southwesterlies strengthen, a dry descending air mass intensifies on the northeastern downwind side of the terrain, rapidly dissipating rainfall and resulting in a relatively short-lived rainfall system. A coexisting terrain-generated local convergence, combined with the absence of dry descending air on the downwind side of the terrain, prolongs the lifetime of the rainfall system.
