Lithium-ion batteries and pseudocapacitors are nowadays popular electrochemical energy storage for many applications, but their cathodes and anodes are still limited to accommodate rich redox ions not only for high energy density but also sluggish ion diffusivity and poor electron conductivity, hindering fast recharge. Here, we report a strategy to realize high-capacity/high-rate cathode and anode as a solution to this challenge. Multiporous conductive hollow carbon (HC) nanospheres with microporous shells for high capacity and hollow cores/mesoporous shells for rapid ion transfer are synthesized as cathode materials using quinoid:benzenoid (Q:B) unit resins of coiled conformation, leading to ∼5-fold higher capacities than benzenoid:benzenoid resins of linear conformation. BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk for dementia. The effects of hypoglycemia on dementia are controversial. Thus, we evaluated whether hypoglycemia increases the risk for dementia in senior patients with T2DM. METHODS We used the Korean National Health Insurance Service Senior cohort, which includes >10% of the entire senior population of South Korea. In total, 5,966 patients who had ever experienced at least one episode of hypoglycemia were matched with those who had not, using propensity score matching. The risk of dementia was assessed through a survival analysis of matched pairs. In this paper, a crown-shaped trench gate formed by a sidewall spacer in insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) is proposed to improve breakdown voltage. When a sidewall spacer is added to trench bottom corners, the electric field is distributed to the surface of the sidewall spacer and decreased to 48% peak value of the electric field. Thus, the sidewall spacer IGBT improved to 5% breakdown voltage. Another study proposed an additional oxide layer for trench bottom corners and improved breakdown voltage similar to the proposed IGBT. Previous studies have shown degradation in other electrical characteristics. However, this study shows a sidewall spacer IGBT that increases the current over 3% compared to a conventional trench IGBT when the applied gate voltage is under 4 V. Additionally, the turn-off loss characteristic is similar to conventional trench IGBT. Therefore, the breakdown voltage of the IGBT was improved while maintaining similar electrical properties to existing IGBTs through the crown-shaped gate.

While dopaminergic dysfunction is believed to be a crucial role in restless legs syndrome (RLS), changes in peripheral microvasculature system such as peripheral hypoxia and altered skin temperature, have been found. This study aimed to investigate whether patients with RLS would have a cerebral and peripheral endothelial dysfunction, and this may have association with treatment responsiveness. We evaluated cerebral endothelial function using breath-holding index (BHI) on transcranial Doppler in bilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA), posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and basilar artery (BA) and peripheral endothelial function using brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in 34 patients with RLS compared with age and sex-matched controls. The values of BHI in both MCA and BA were significantly lower in RLS group than control group. The values of FMD also were significantly lower in RLS patients. There was a weak correlation between BHI and FMD (p = 0.038 in Rt MCA, p = 0.032 in Lt MCA, p = 0.362 in BA) in RLS, but not in controls. BHI differed according to treatment responsiveness. (p

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising photocatalysts for water oxidation, essential to generate solar fuels, but their limited accessible reaction sites, slow charge transfer, and activity degradation are yet to be overcome. As a solution to overcome these drawbacks, we report nanosheets of mono or dual layers derived via nitrogen plasma exfoliation of anion layers from NiAl LDHs. Moreover, such a sheet has rich O vacancies resulting in decreased Ni–O and shortened Ni–metal bonds. Furthermore, doped nitrogen leads to metal–N and N–O bonds along with oxynitrides. With O vacancies facilitating adsorption of water oxidation intermediates onto low-coordinated Ni and the doped N pulling electrons from water oxidation intermediates, the ultrathin nanosheets assembled on hematite nanorods are found to outperform the activity of hematite by about 2 fold and the charge transfer of LDH nanoplates assembled on hematite by about 4 fold, while showing excellent activity retention close to 100% in a long-term stability test.

Multimetallic electrocatalysts have shown great potential to improve electrocatalytic performance, but their deteriorations in activity and durability are yet to be overcome. Here, metal‐organic fragments with adhesive excipient to realize high activity with good durability in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are developed. First, a leaf‐like zeolitic–imidazolate framework (ZIF‐L) is synthesized. Then, ionized species in hydrogen plasma attack preferentially the organic linkers of ZIF‐L to derive cobalt–imidazole fragments (CIFs) as adhesive excipient, while they are designed to retain the coordinated cobalt nodes. Moreover, the vacant coordination sites at cobalt nodes and the unbound nitrogen at organic linkers induce high porosity and conductivity. The CIFs serve to stably impregnate trimetallic FeNiMo electrocatalysts (CIF:FeNiMo), and CIF:FeNiMo containing Fe contents of 22% and hexavalent Mo contents show to enable high activity with low overpotentials (203 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 238 mV at 100 mA cm−2) in OER. The near O K‐edge extended X‐ray absorption fine structure proves further that high activity for OER originates from the partially filled eg orbitals. Additionally, CIF:FeNiMo exhibit good durability, as demonstrated by high activity retention during at least 45 days in OER., A strategy is developed to produce metal‐organic fragments allowing to stabilize multimetallic electrocatalysts in which a leaf‐like zeolitic–imidazolate framework is transformed into Co–imidazole fragments (CIFs) with unsaturated orbitals and dangling bonds as adhesive excipient. Fe, Ni, and Mo elements impregnated within CIFs, referred as CIF:FeNiMo catalysts, demonstrate high activity with low overpotentials (203 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 238 mV at 100 mA cm−2) and robust durability with high activity retention (during at least 45 days) in oxygen evolution reaction.

An electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential in the realization of renewable energy conversion technologies, but its large overpotential, slow charge transfer, and degradation of surface reaction sites are yet to be overcome. Here, it is found that the metallic nickel domains and high-valence reduced molybdenum ions of NiFeMo electrocatalysts grown on a 3D conductive and porous electrode without using binders enable ultrahigh performance in OER. High resolution-transmission electron microscope and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses show that metallic nickel domains with Ni-Ni bonds are generated on the catalyst surface via a dry synthesis using nitrogen plasma. Also, Mo K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy reveals that Mo6+ ions are reduced into high-valence modulating Mo4+ ions. With the metallic nickel domains facilitating the adsorption of oxygen intermediates to low-coordinated Ni0 and the Mo4+ pulling their electrons, the catalyst exhibits about 60-fold higher activity than a Mo-free NiFe catalyst, while giving about threefold faster charge transfer along with longer stability over 100 h and repeated 100 cycles compared to a bare NiFeMo catalyst. Additionally, these metallic domains and high-valence modulating metal ions are exhibited to give high Faradaic efficiency over 95%.

Corticobasal syndrome is the most common phenotype of corticobasal degeneration (CBD). F-FP-CIT PET and MRI are not helpful in distinguishing CBD from idiopathic Parkinson disease. Dual-phase F-FP-CIT PET is a recently developed imaging that shows regional cerebral perfusion in the early phase and dopamine transporter density in the late phase. We investigated the usefulness of dual-phase F-FP-CIT PET imaging in 3 patients with corticobasal syndrome. This image highlights that the early phases of F-FP-CIT PET may reflect regional cerebral perfusion with a pattern very similar to that of regional glucose metabolism in CBD.

The high-NA angle-resolved scatterometer YieldStar 1250D, with a small 12x12μm2 inspection area, has been used to inspect CD variation After Develop (ADI) and After Partition/Final Etch (APEI/AFEI) on various layers and features of a HVM DRAM process. During recipe set-up, CD-SEM data were used to verify full recipe quality. The high sampling density enabled by the small inspection area and high speed of the YieldStar angle-resolved scatterometer could be used to reveal various kinds of CD variations. An intra-field control-loop with scanner dose corrections was tested, using very dense ADI and APEI measurements, 400ppf, 4fields. This strategy demonstrated a 21% improvement in intra-field CDU, in line with expectations from predictions. Inter-field control loops with different strategies have been simulated for APEI CD control. To capture all variations in the inter-field fingerprints a dense sampling, 24ppf full wafer, in combination with a dynamic, context-based control strategy, appeared to be necessary. An improvement of 30% of the wafer CDU (excluding the intra-field) is feasible. For the Self-Aligned Double Patterning process, essential for the dense DRAM cells, the CD variation at APEI contributes to pitch-walking at final etch. Pitch walking is an alternating OV error, therefore these control strategies will also contribute to improvement of the OV control budget.

Daphnia Magna Stratus has been widely accepted as useful species for estimating the toxicity of chemicals to aquatic invertebrate and recommended as species for the testing chemicals from the international guideline as well as Korean guideline. The study was performed for the acute toxicity test by using water flea(D. Magna) for effluents from several wastewater treatment plants and drainage canals in GyeongBuk area. Five heavy metals, 1,4-Dioxane and Perchlorate were tested. Most Toxicity Units(TU) of Industrial wastewater effluents were less than 1 which means effluent was not toxic to D. Magna. However, effluents containing 1,4-Dioxane and Perchlorate were significantly toxic to D. Magna. Therefore, facilities should reduce the 1,4-dioxane since new regulations will force them after the year of 2011.

Background and purpose We investigated predictors of institutionalization in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in South Korea. Methods In total, 2,470 patients with AD aged 74.5±7.8 years (mean±standard deviation, 68.1% females) were enrolled from November 2005 to December 2013. The dates of institutionalization were identified from the public Long-Term-Care Insurance program in January 2014. We used a Cox proportional-hazards model to identify predictors for future institutionalization among characteristics at the time of diagnosis in 2,470 AD patients. A similar Cox proportional-hazards model was also used to investigate predictors among variables that reflected longitudinal changes in clinical variables before institutionalization in 816 patients who underwent follow-up testing. Results A lower Mini Mental State Examination score [hazard ratio (HR)=0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.92-0.97] and higher scores for the Clinical Dementia Rating and Neuro-Psychiatric Inventory (HR=1.01, 95% CI=1.00-1.01) at baseline were independent predictors of institutionalization. The relationship of patients with their main caregivers, presence of the apolipoprotein E e4 allele, and medication at baseline were not significantly associated with the rate of institutionalization. In models with variables that exhibited longitudinal changes, larger annual change in Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes score (HR=1.15, 95% CI=1.06-1.23) and higher medication possession ratio of antipsychotics (HR=1.89, 95% CI=1.20-2.97) predicted earlier institutionalization. Conclusions This study shows that among Korean patients with AD, lower cognitive ability, higher dementia severity, more-severe behavioral symptoms at baseline, more-rapid decline in dementia severity, and more-frequent use of antipsychotics are independent predictors of earlier institutionalization.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although intracranial atherosclerotic disease is often encountered during endovascular treatment for acute vertebrobasilar occlusions, its clinical implication is not well-known. We aimed to evaluate whether intracranial atherosclerotic disease influences the clinical outcomes following endovascular treatment of acute vertebrobasilar occlusive stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients with acute vertebrobasilar occlusive stroke were included. The onset-to-groin puncture time was ≤12 hours, and aspiration- or stent-based thrombectomy was used as the primary treatment method. Following primary endovascular treatment, intracranial atherosclerotic disease (IAD group) was angiographically diagnosed when a fixed focal stenosis was observed at the occlusion site, whereas embolism (embolic group) was diagnosed if no stenosis was observed. Clinical and treatment variables were compared in both groups, and IAD was evaluated as a prognostic factor for clinical outcomes. RESULTS: The baseline NIHSS score tended to be lower (14 versus 22, P = .097) in the IAD group (n = 19) than in the embolic group (n = 32). The procedural time was longer in the IAD group (96 versus 61 minutes, P = .002), despite similar rates of TICI 2b–3 (89.5% versus 87.5%, P = 1.000). The NIHSS score at 7 days was higher (21 versus 8, P = .060) and poor outcomes (mRS 4–6 at 3 months) were more frequent in the IAD group (73.7% versus 43.8%, P = .038). IAD (odds ratio, 5.469; 95% CI, 1.09–27.58; P = .040) was independently associated with poor outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: An arterial occlusion related to IAD was associated with a longer procedural time and poorer clinical outcome. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the appropriate endovascular strategy.

We propose the syntheses of photopolymer with pendant cinnamic ester and cyclic carbonate groups by the addition reaction of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-styrene) with CO2 and then with cinnamoyl chloride. Quaternary ammonium salts showed good catalytic activity for this synthesis. Photochemical reaction experiments revealed that terpolymer having cinnamate and cyclic carbonate groups has good photosensitivity, even in the absence of sensitizer. In order to expand the application of the obtained terpolymer, polymer blends with poly(methyl methacrylate) were prepared. Differential scanning calorimetry and optical clarity tests showed that the blends were miscible over the whole composition ranges.

This study introduces a new Triangulated Irregular Network(TIN) compression method and a progressive visualization technique using Delaunay triangulation. The compression strategy is based on the assumption that most triangulated 2.5-dimensional terrains are very similar to their Delaunay triangulation. Therefore, the compression algorithm only needs to maintain a few edges that are not included in the Delaunay edges. An efficient encoding method is presented for the set of edges by using vertex reordering and a general bracketing method. In experiments, the compression method examined several sets of TIN data with various resolutions, which were generated by five typical terrain simplification algorithms. By exploiting the results, the connecting structures of common terrain data are compressed to 0.17 bits per vertex on average, which is superior to the results of previous methods. The results are shown by a progressive visualization method for web-based GIS.

In this paper, a sensorless speed control system is designed for the next generation high speed railway system currently under development in Korea with commercial speed 350 km/h, and maximum trial speed 400km/h. The maximum torque per ampere control approach is applied in the constant torque region and the field-weakening control is applied in the constant power region. For the sensorless operation, in the low speed region, a high frequency voltage signal injection method, and in the high-speed region, a model reference adaptive system method is used respectively. To verify the designed system, a simulator for the vector controller and sensorless controller is implemented using Matlab/simulink.

Modern GIS (geographic information system) application programs and simulation systems have to handle large datasets for rendering. Currently, three dimensional rendering hardware are facing a memory bus bandwidth bottleneck problem at the graphics pipeline. One general solution for this problem is to compress the static three dimensional geometry in a preprocessing phase. We present a new mesh compression/decompression algorithm for this application. Our compression algorithm breaks down a triangle mesh into a set of triangle strips and vertex chains. After decomposition, we encode vertex connectivity with entropy encoding. Our algorithm provides a 32% improvement in the compression ratio over existing "Generalized Triangle Mesh (GTM)" compression and supports parallel decompression. We also proposed a parallelogram prediction method for vertex coordinate compression.

In this paper we introduce a new compression technique for the connectivity of a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) by using Delaunay triangulation. The strategy in this paper is based on that most of 2.5 dimensional terrain connection are very similar to plane-projected Delaunay triangulation of their vertex set. We only need to keep the vertex coordinates and a few edges that are not included in the Delaunay edges. We present an efficient encoding method for the set of edges using vertex reordering and general bracketing algorithm. Also we propose progressive visualization method for web-based GIS. In the experiments, the method was examined on several TIN data with various resolutions, which were generated by five typical terrain simplification algorithms. The connectivity information of common terrain data could be compressed by 0.23 bits per vertex.
