To investigate the fatigue behaviour of stainless steel (SS) reinforcement, monotonic tensile and cyclic fatigue loading tests on 1.4362 duplex SS bars with diameters of 12 mm, 16 mm, and 20 mm are conducted. To keep the characteristics of reinforcement used in engineering construction, the specimens remain unprocessed. Two loading schemes for cyclic tests are considered in this work: (i) constant strain-amplitude, and (ii) variable strain-amplitude. The Ramberg-Osgood model was used to fit the experimental results. The strain-based and energy-based fatigue life equations are obtained. The strain-based fatigue life equation is compared with the present fatigue life estimation equations. Moreover, the ReinforcingSteel material model in OpenSees is calibrated with the experimental data. The results show that SS bars under cyclic experience hardening followed by softening. The bar diameter does not significantly affect the fatigue life prediction. The modified fatigue life equation suggests that SS bars have better fatigue resistance than conventional steel (CS) bars. The numerical analysis indicates that the calibrated steel material model (i.e. ReinforcingSteel) can produce a good simulation of SS bars under cyclic loading. It can improve the accuracy of numerical models of concrete components reinforced by SS bars.

The use of machine learning to characterise quantum states has been demonstrated, but usually training the algorithm using data from the same state one wants to characterise. Here, the authors show an algorithm that can learn all states that share structural similarities with the ones used for the training.

Simulating quantum physical processes has been one of the major motivations for quantum information science. Quantum channels, which are completely positive and trace preserving processes, are the standard mathematical language to describe quantum evolution, while in recent years quantum superchannels have emerged as the substantial extension. Superchannels capture effects of quantum memory and non-Markovianality more precisely, and have found broad applications in universal models, algorithm, metrology, discrimination tasks, as examples. Here, we report an experimental simulation of qubit superchannels in a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system with high accuracy, based on a recently developed quantum algorithm for superchannel simulation. Our algorithm applies to arbitrary target superchannels, and our experiment shows the high quality of NMR simulators for near-term usage. Our approach can also be adapted to other experimental systems and demonstrates prospects for more applications of superchannels.

Large numbers of microbes can be present in seminal fluid, and there are differences in the semen microbiota between normal and abnormal semen samples. To evaluate the semen microbiota in patients with leukocytospermia, 87 seminal fluid samples, including 33 samples with a normal seminal leukocyte count and 54 samples with leukocytospermia, were obtained for a cross-sectional analysis. Twenty samples with a normal seminal leukocyte count had normal sperm parameters (Control group), and 13 samples with a normal seminal leukocyte count were from asthenozoospermia patients (Ast group). However, 32 samples with leukocytospermia were from asthenozoospermia patients (LA group), and only 22 samples with leukocytospermia had normal sperm parameters (Leu group). The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing method was used to sequence the microbiota in the seminal fluid, and multiple bioinformatics methods were utilized to analyze the data. Finally, the results showed that the worse sperm parameters were observed in the leukocytospermia-related groups. Semen microbiota analysis found that there was increased alpha diversity in the leukocytospermia-related groups. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the primary phyla in the seminal fluid. Two microbiota profiles, namely, Lactobacillus-enriched and Streptococcus-enriched groups, were identified in this study. The majority of the samples in the groups with a normal seminal leukocyte count could be categorized as Lactobacillus-enriched, whereas the majority of the leukocytospermia samples could be categorized as Streptococcus-enriched. Our study indicated that males with leukocytospermia have worse sperm parameters and a different semen microbiota composition compared to males with a normal seminal leukocyte count.

Quantum simulation is one of the central discipline to demonstrate the power of quantum computing. In recent years, the theoretical framework of quantum superchannels has been developed and applied widely as the extension of quantum channels. In this work, we study the quantum circuit simulation task of superchannels. We develop a quantum superchannel simulation algorithm based on the convex decomposition into sum of extreme superchannels. We demonstrate the algorithm by numerical simulation of qubit superchannels with high accuracy, making it applicable to current experimental platforms. Our study stands as an expansion of the superchannel theory to the field of quantum simulation and algorithm, as well as an extension of quantum simulation from channels and open-system dynamics to superchannels and processes with manifest quantum memory effects.

ABSTRACT: The Narooma-Batemans Bay (NBB) area along the southeast coast of Australia is a part of the eastern zone of the Early Paleozoic Lachlan Orogen. In the NBB, a set of rock association consisting of turbidites, siliceous rock, basic lava, and argillaceous melange zone is mainly developed. According to systematic field geological survey, the deformation of 3 stages (D1, D2, and D3) was identified in the NBB. At stage D1, with the original bedding S0 in a nearly east-west trending as the deformation plane, tight folds, isoclinal folds, and other structures formed in the NBB accompanied by structural transposition. As a result, crenulation cleavage developed along the axial plane of the folds and schistosity S1 formed. At stage D2, with north-south-trending schistosity S1 as the deformation plane, a large number of asymmetrical folds and rotated porphyroclasts formed owing to thrusting and shear. At stage D3, left-lateral strike-slip occurred along the main north-south-trending schistosity. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of tectonic deformation in the NBB and summary of previous research results, it is determined that the early-stage (D1) deformation is related to Ordovician Macquarie arc-continent collision and the deformation at stages D2 and D3 is the result of the westward subduction of Paleo-Pacific Plate. That is, it is not the continuous westward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate that constitutes the evolution model of the NBB as previously considered.

The results of Schur convexity established by Elezovic and Pecaric for the average of convex functions are generalized relative to the case of the means for two-variable convex functions. As an application, some binary mean inequalities are given.

Objective: To systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of Tic Disorders (TD) in children, and to clarify the current evidence regarding the clinical application of acupuncture in the treatment of TD. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing acupuncture treatment with pharmaceutical treatment for TD were included in this review. A comprehensive search of 6 electronic literature databases was conducted, and the retrieval date was from the establishment of the database to April 2020. The Cochrane Collaboration’s bias risk assessment tool was used to evaluate the bias risk of the included literature, and adopted the Review Manager 5.3 was used for statistical analysis of the data in the included literature. Results: A total of 22 RCTs (1668 participants) were included in this review. Meta-analysis indicated that acupuncture showed superior effects in the following aspects, including higher overall effective rate [RR = 1.20,95 % CI(1.09,1.20),P＜0.00001], significant reduction in Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) scores [MD=-2.79,95 %CI(-4.75,-0.82),P = 0.005], lower incidence of adverse effects [RR = 0.26,95 %CI(0.17,0.41),P＜0.00001], and reduced recurrence rate [RR = 0.28,95 %CI(0.17,0.46),P＜0.00001]. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment alone is more effective in the treatment of TD than pharmaceutical treatment, as seen in the reduction of YGTSS scores, fewer adverse effects and lower recurrence rates.

Sodium benzenesulfonate was doped into polypyrrole-modified granular activated carbon (pyrrole-FeCl3·(6H2O)-sodium benzenesulfonate-granular activated carbon; PFB-GAC) with the goal of improving the modified GAC’s ability to adsorb sulfate from aqueous solutions. At a GAC dosage of 2.5 g and a pyrrole concentration of 1 mol L−1, the adsorption capacity of PFB-GAC prepared using a pyrrole:FeCl3·(6H2O):sodium benzenesulfonate ratio of 1000 : 1500 : 1 reached 23.05 mg g−1, which was eight times higher than that for GAC and two times higher than that for polypyrrole-modified GAC without sodium benzenesulfonate. Adsorption was favored under acidic conditions and high initial sulfate concentrations. Doping with sodium benzenesulfonate facilitated polymerization to give polypyrrole. Sodium benzenesulfonate introduced more imino groups to the polypyrrole coating, and the N+ sites improved ion exchange of Cl− and SO42− and increased the adsorption capacity of sulfate. Adsorption to the PFB-GAC followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model, and adsorption was exothermic. Regeneration using a weak alkali (NH3·H2O), which released OH− slowly, caused less damage to the polypyrrole than using a strong alkali (NaOH) as the regeneration reagent. NH3·H2O at a concentration of 12 mol L−1 (with the same OH− concentration as 2 mol L−1 NaOH) released 85% of the sorbed sulfate in the first adsorption-desorption cycle, and the adsorption capacity remained >6 mg g−1after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

In this work, we develop the theory of quasi-exact fault-tolerant quantum (QEQ) computation, which uses qubits encoded into quasi-exact quantum error-correction codes (‘quasi codes’). By definition, a quasi code is a parametric approximate code that can become exact by tuning its parameters. The model of QEQ computation lies in between the two well-known ones: the usual noisy quantum computation without error correction and the usual fault-tolerant quantum computation, but closer to the later. Many notions of exact quantum codes need to be adjusted for the quasi setting. Here we develop quasi error-correction theory using quantum instrument, the notions of quasi universality, quasi code distances, and quasi thresholds, etc. We find a wide class of quasi codes which are called valence-bond-solid codes, and we use them as concrete examples to demonstrate QEQ computation.

In recent studies, spectral matching is the most commonly proposed method for selecting earthquake records for time-history analysis of structures. However, until now, there have been no serious investigations of the effects of coordinate values on the scaling of ground motions. This paper investigated the influence of using arithmetic and logarithmic values of response spectra in spectral matching procedures (i.e., ASM and LSM methods) on the results of nonlinear structural time-history analysis. Steel moment resisting frame structures of the 3-, 9-, and 20-stories, which represent low-, medium-, and high-rise buildings, respectively, were used as examples. Structural benchmark responses were determined by calculating the arithmetic mean and median of peak interstory drift ratio (PIDR) demands based on the three record sets developed by the American SAC Steel Project. The three record sets represent seismic hazard levels with 50%, 10%, and 2% probabilities exceeded in 50 years, and their average acceleration spectra were also taken as the target spectrum. Moreover, another 40 record components for selection were scaled both by ASM and LSM methods. The seven components whose spectra were best compatible with the target spectra were selected for the structural time-history analysis. The scale factors obtained by the LSM method are nearly larger than that of the ASM method, and their ranking and selection of records are different. The estimation accuracies of structural mean (median) responses by both methods can be controlled within an engineering acceptable range (±20%), but the LSM method may cause larger structural responses than the ASM method. The LSM method has a better capacity for reducing the variability of structural responses than the ASM method, and this advantage is more significant for longer-period structures (e.g., 20-story structure) with more severe nonlinear responses.

BackgroundCoronary heart disease (CHD) remains highly prevalent and is one of the largest causes of death worldwide. Blood stasis syndrome (BSS) is the main syndrome associated with CHD. However, the underlying biological basis of BSS with CHD is not yet been fully understood.Materials and MethodsWe proposed a metabolomics method based on 1H-NMR and random forest (RF) models to elucidate the underlying biological basis of BSS with CHD. Firstly, 58 cases of CHD patients, including 27 BSS and 31 phlegm syndrome (PS), and 26 volunteers were recruited from Xiangya Hospital affiliated to Central South University. A 1 mL venous blood sample was collected for NMR analysis. Secondly, principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) and RF was applied to observe the classification of each group, respectively. Finally, RF and multidimensional scaling (MDS) were utilized to discover the plasma potential biomarkers in CHD patients and CHD–BSS patients.ResultsThe models constructed by RF could visually discriminate BSS from PS in CHD patients. Simultaneously, we obtained 12 characteristic metabolites, including lysine, glutamine, taurine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, histidine, lipid, citrate, choline, lactate, α-glucose, β-glucose related to the CHD patients, and Choline, β-glucose, α-glucose and tyrosine were considered as potential biomarkers of CHD–BSS.ConclusionThe combining of 1H-NMR profiling with RF models was a useful approach to analyze complex metabolomics data (should be deleted). Choline, β-glucose, α-glucose and tyrosine were considered as potential biomarkers of CHD–BSS.

Serious damage to near-fault structures is caused mainly by velocity pulses in a ground motion, hence, the necessity to develop a pulse-related definition of strong-motion duration to adequately describe the intensity of near-fault ground motion. For a multipulse record, an ideal-pulse-based strong-motion duration, which is defined as the time interval between the beginning of the first pulse and the end of the last pulse in an ideal-pulse signal, is proposed. This strong-motion duration corresponds with the time interval of the occurrence of strong vibrations and energy accumulations in the original record. For near-fault records, pulselike characteristics can be completely presented within this duration. Meanwhile, the ideal-pulse-based strong-motion duration shows good performance in the estimation of structural responses. The elastic and inelastic displacement spectra of the original records agree well with those of the records shortened according to the proposed duration. The validity of applying the proposed duration to structural analysis is further verified by the nonlinear time history analyses of 3-, 9-, and 20-story steel moment-resisting frame structures. The proposed strong-motion duration accurately estimates nonlinear structural responses. It is proven that the ideal-pulse-based strong-motion duration can adequately describe the intensity of near-fault ground motions, both from the perspective of the energy accumulation process in a ground-motion record and that of the structural analyses subjected to these ground motions. We study quasi-exact quantum error-correcting codes and quantum computation with them. A quasi-exact code is an approximate code such that it contains a finite number of scaling parameters, the tuning of which can flow it to corresponding exact codes, serving as its fixed points. The computation with a quasi-exact code cannot realize any logical gate to arbitrary accuracy. To overcome this, the notion of quasi-exact universality is proposed, which makes quasi-exact quantum computation a feasible model especially for executing moderate-size algorithms. We find that the incompatibility between universality and transversality of the set of logical gates does not persist in the quasi-exact scenario. A class of covariant quasi-exact codes is defined which proves to support a transversal and quasi-exact universal set of logical gates for SU(d). This work opens the possibility of quantum computation with quasi-exact universality, transversality, and fault tolerance.

The laminin subunit alpha 2 (LAMA2) gene encodes an alpha 2 chain, which constitutes one of the subunits of laminin 2 (merosin) and laminin 4 (s-merosin). In the current study, we investigated the relationship between LAMA2 promoter methylation status and the invasiveness of clinically nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (PitNETs). Specimens from patients with nonfunctioning PitNET were classified into three groups according to preoperative computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging findings: a normal group ( n = 6), non-invasive group ( n = 11) and invasive group ( n = 6). LAMA2 expression was assessed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blotting, and the methylation status of the LAMA2 promoter region was observed using sodium bisulfite sequencing. Furthermore, 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine was used to explore the relationship between decreased LAMA expression and methylation in PitNET cells. According to the RT-qPCR and western blotting results, LAMA2 expression was downregulated in invasive PitNET, while the methylation of the LAMA2 promoter was increased. Methylation of the LAMA2 promoter decreased the expression of LAMA2. Thus, changes in LAMA2 expression due to promoter methylation were inversely correlated with the invasiveness of PitNET and the protein functions as a tumor suppressor. In addition, overexpression and demethylation of LAMA2 suppressed the invasion of PitNET cells, partially by exerting effects on the PTEN-PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Furthermore, a xenograft model was also generated, and LAMA2 overexpression significantly suppressed tumor growth in vivo . Thus, LAMA2 expression and methylation patterns might be used as biomarkers to predict the prognosis of patients with PitNET.

We have examined the basic composition of anthocyanins and polysaccharides, the active components in Aronia melanocarpa fruit. To this end, microwave-assisted ethanol extraction and cellulase enzymatic hydrolysis were employed to extract anthocyanins and crude polysaccharides, respectively. Aronia melanocarpa fruit polysaccharides were separated and purified by DEAE-52 cellulose and Sephadex G-100 glucan gel column chromatography, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results demonstrated that the optimal extraction parameters of anthocyanin from Aronia melanocarpa fruit were a 60% ethanol volume fraction, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 30:1, a microwave time of 60 s, and a microwave power of 210 W. The extracted anthocyanins reached 200.47 mg/100 g, while the yield of polysaccharides was 3.82%. Anthocyanins in Aronia melanocarpa fruit were mainly composed of cyanidin, delphinidin, and mallow pigment, among which cyanidin was the main component, with a content as high as 90.79%. There were two distinct fractions of polysaccharides. The fraction-I polysaccharides were mainly composed of rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and arabinose, with a molar ratio of 8.80: 8.97: 2.38: 27.46: 47.94. In contrast, the fraction-II polysaccharides were primarily composed of rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galactose, xylose, and arabinose, with a molar ratio of 1.67: 9.22: 8.47: 70.69: 6.16. In the current study, corn steep liquor (CSL) is evaluated as an ideal raw agro-material for efficient lipid and docosahexaenoic acid DHA production by Aurantiochytrium sp. Low CSL level in medium (nitrogen deficiency) stimulated the biosynthesis of lipids and DHA while inhibiting cellular growth. The transcriptomic profiles of the Aurantiochytrium sp. cells are analyzed and compared when cultured under high (H group), normal (N group), and low (L group) levels of CSL in the medium. The discriminated transcriptomic profiles from the three groups indicates that changes in CSL level in medium result in a global change in transcriptome of Aurantiochytrium sp. The overall de novo assembly of cDNA sequence data generated 61,163 unigenes, and 18,129 of them were annotated in at least one database. A total of 5105 differently expressed (DE) genes were found in the N group versus the H group, with 2218 downregulated and 2887 upregulated. A total of 3625 DE genes were found in the N group versus the L group, with 1904 downregulated and 1721 upregulated. The analysis and categorization of the DE genes indicates that the regulation mechanism of CSL involved in the perception and transduction of the limited nitrogen signal, the interactions between the transcription factors (TFs) and multiple downstream genes, and the variations in downstream genes and metabolites, in sequence, are illuminated for the first time in the current study.

The traditional biochemical methods for analyzing cellular composition of oleaginous microorganisms are time-consuming, polluting, and expensive. In the present study, an FT-IR method was used to analyze the cellular composition of the marine oleaginous protist Aurantiochytrium sp. during various research processes, such as strains screening, medium optimization, and fermentation, and was evaluated as a green, low-cost, high throughput, and accurate method compared with the traditional methods. A total of 109 Aurantiochytrium sp. strains were screened for lipid and carbohydrate production and the best results were found for the strains No. 6 and No. 32. The yields and productivities could reach up to 47.2 g/L and 0.72 g/L/h for lipid, 21.6 g/L and 0.33 g/L/h for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the strain No. 6, and 15.4 g/L and 0.18 g/L/h for carbohydrate in the strain No. 32, under the optimal conditions, respectively. These results confirmed potentials of the two Aurantiochytrium sp. strains for lipid, DHA, and carbohydrate productions at industrial scales. The FT-IR method in this study will facilitate research on the oleaginous Aurantiochytrium sp., and the obtained two strains for lipid and carbohydrate productions will provide the foundations for their applications in medical, food, and feed industries.
