The modern very large-scale integration systems based on silicon semiconductor are facing the unprecedented challenges especially when transistor feature size lowers further, due to the excruciating tunneling effect and thermal management. Besides the common diamond cubic silicon, numerous exotic silicon allotropes with outstanding properties can emerge under high pressure, such as the metastable BC8 and metallic \b{eta}-tin structures. Despite much effort on the controlled synthesis in experiment and theory, the effective approach to rationally prepare Si phases with desired purity is still lacking and their transition mechanism remains controversial. Herein, we systematically investigated on the complicated structural transformations of Si under extreme conditions, and efficiently enriched BC8-Si phase via dynamic decompression strategy. The splendid purity of BC8-Si was achieved up to ~95%, evidently confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Transition-metal honeycomb compounds are capturing scientific attention due to their distinctive electronic configurations, underscored by the triangular-lattice spin-orbit coupling and competition between multiple interactions, paving the way for potential manifestations of phenomena such as Dirac semimetal, superconductivity, and quantum spin liquid states. These compounds can undergo discernible pressure-induced alterations in their crystallographic and electronic paradigms, as exemplified by our high-pressure (HP) synthesis and exploration of the honeycomb polymorph of ReO3 (P6322). This HP-P6322 polymorph bears a phase transition from P6322 to P63/mmc upon cooling around Tp = 250 K, as evidenced by the evolution of temperature-dependent magnetization (M-T curves), cell dimension, and conductivity initiated by an inherent bifurcation of the oxygen position in the ab plane. Insightful analysis of its band structure positions suggests this HP-P6322 polymorph being a plausible candidate for Dirac semimetal properties. This phase transition evokes anomalies in the temperature-dependent variation of paramagnetism (non-linearity) and a crossover from semiconductor to temperature-independent metal, showing a temperature independent conductivity behavior below ~200 K. Under increasing external pressure, both the Tp and resistance of this HP-polymorph is slightly magnetic-field dependent and undergo a "V"-style evolution (decreasing and then increasing) before becoming pressure independent up to 20.2 GPa. Theoretical calculations pinpoint this anionic disorder as a probable catalyst for the decrement in the conductive efficiency and muted temperature-dependent conductivity response.

Ferrimagnetic nodal-line semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ keeps the records of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and angular magnetoresistance (AMR). Here we report tuning the electronic transport properties via doping and pressure in (Mn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. As the substitution of nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ for magnetic Mn$^{2+}$, ferrimagnetic transition temperature $T_C$ gradually decreases, while the resistivity increases significantly. At the same time, the CMR and AMR are both enhanced for the low-doping compositions (e.g., $x = 0.1$ and 0.2), which can be attributed to doping-induced broadening of the band gap and a larger variation range of the resistivity when undergoing a metal-insulator transition by applying a magnetic field along the $c$ axis. On the contrary, $T_C$ rises with increasing pressure due to the enhancement of the magnetic exchange interactions until a structural transition occurs at $\sim$13 GPa. Meanwhile, the activation gap is lowered under pressure and the magnetoresistance is decreased dramatically above 6 GPa where the gap is closed. At 20 and 26 GPa, evidences for a superconducting transition at $\sim$5 K are observed. The results reveal that doping and pressure are effective methods to tune the activation gap, and correspondingly, the CMR and AMR in nodal-line semiconductors, providing an approach to investigate the magnetoresistance materials for novel spintronic devices., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Charge and spin order is intimately related to superconductivity in copper oxide superconductors. To elucidate the competing orders in various nickel oxide compounds are crucial given the fact that superconductivity has been discovered in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ films. Herein, we report structural, electronic transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic characterizations on single crystals of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$. La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ is metallic with mixed Ni$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{3+}$ valent states. Resistivity measurements yield two transition-like kinks at $\sim$110 and 153 K, respectively. The kink at 153 K is further revealed from magnetization and specific heat measurements, indicative of the formation of charge and spin order. La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ single crystals obtained from topochemical reduction of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ are insulating and show an anomaly at $\sim$176 K on magnetic susceptibility. The transition-like behaviors of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ are analogous to the charge and spin order observed in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$, suggesting charge and spin order is a common feature in the ternary La-Ni-O system with mixed-valent states of nickel., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Recent research finds CNN models for image classification demonstrate overlapped adversarial vulnerabilities: adversarial attacks can mislead CNN models with small perturbations, which can effectively transfer between different models trained on the same dataset. Adversarial training, as a general robustness improvement technique, eliminates the vulnerability in a single model by forcing it to learn robust features. The process is hard, often requires models with large capacity, and suffers from significant loss on clean data accuracy. Alternatively, ensemble methods are proposed to induce sub-models with diverse outputs against a transfer adversarial example, making the ensemble robust against transfer attacks even if each sub-model is individually non-robust. Only small clean accuracy drop is observed in the process. However, previous ensemble training methods are not efficacious in inducing such diversity and thus ineffective on reaching robust ensemble. We propose DVERGE, which isolates the adversarial vulnerability in each sub-model by distilling non-robust features, and diversifies the adversarial vulnerability to induce diverse outputs against a transfer attack. The novel diversity metric and training procedure enables DVERGE to achieve higher robustness against transfer attacks comparing to previous ensemble methods, and enables the improved robustness when more sub-models are added to the ensemble. Whilst electron correlations were previously recognized to trigger beyond conventional direct current (DC) electronic transportations (e.g. metal-to-insulator transitions, bad metal, thermistors), their respective influences to the alternation current (AC) transport are largely overlooked. Herein, we demonstrate active regulations in the electronic functionalities of d-band correlated rare-earth nickelate (ReNiO3) thin films, by simply utilizing their electronic responses to AC-frequencies (fAC). Assisted by temperature dependent near edge X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, we discovered positive temperature dependences in Coulomb viscosity of ReNiO3 that moderates their AC impedance. Distinguished crosslinking among R(Real)-fAC measured in nearby temperatures is observed that differs to conventional oxides. It enables active adjustability in correlated transports of ReNiO3, among NTCR-, TDelta- and PTCR- thermistors, via fAC from the electronic perspective without varying materials or device structures. The TDelta-fAC relationship can be further widely adjusted via Re composition and interfacial strains. The AC-frequency sensitivity discovered in ReNiO3 brings in a new freedom to regulating and switching the device working states beyond the present semiconductor technologies. It opens a new paradigm for enriching novel electronic applications catering automatic transmission or artificial intelligence in sensing temperatures and frequencies.

The metal to insulator transition (MIT) in Mott-Hubbard systems is one of the most important discoveries in condensed matter physics, and results in abrupt orbital transitions from the insulating to metallic phases by elevating temperature across a critical point (TMIT). Although the MIT was previously expected to be mainly driven by the orbital Coulomb repulsion energy, the entropy contribution to the orbital free energy that also determines the relative stability of the metallic and insulating phases was largely overlooked. Herein, we demonstrate an orbital-entropy dominated reversible electronic phase transition in the metastable perovskite family of correlated rare-earth nicklates (ReNiO3), in addition to their previously known MIT driven by orbital Coulomb energies. In reverse to MIT, the resistivity of ReNiO3 abruptly increases by 2-3 orders by elevating T across another critical point (TR-MIT) below TMIT, and such transition is named as reverse-metal to insulator transition (R-MIT). Combining the afterwards exponentially decreasing resistivity in the insulating phase of ReNiO3 at further temperature elevation, a distinguished delta-temperatural transport character is established, which is potentially applicable for locking the working temperatures range for electric devices. The TR-MIT is shown to be enhanced via reducing the compositional complexity and size of Re or imparting bi-axial compressive strains, and meanwhile the transition sharpness of delta-temperatural transport is reduced. Our discovery indicates that temperature range for a thermodynamically stable insulating phase of ReNiO3 is in between of TR-MIT and TMIT, while a new conductive phase with high orbital entropy is formed by further descending temperature below TR-MIT.
