Abstract

Piezo‐photocatalysis could coalesce the advantages of mechanical vibration and solar energy perfectly to achieve high‐efficiency catalytic activity. Herein, the quintessential piezoelectric material CdS nanowires with different aspect ratios are precisely constructed and applied for piezo‐photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) for the first time. The ultrasonic (60 kHz, 100 W) induces piezoelectric potential to generate a 0.57 eV A−1 electric field, which is added to the direction of CdS (010) as a driving force to efficiently separate photogenerated charges. The alliance between piezoelectric effect and photocatalytic activity endows CdS NW‐3 with the fastest piezo‐photocatalytic rate under ultrasonic vibration and 5 W LED irradiation, and the relevant rate constant (0.042 min−1) is about 12 and 53.8 times than that of LED and ultrasonication. More importantly, 93.74% of U(VI) could be removed from natural uranium mine wastewater. Therefore, this piezo‐photocatalysis system that reduces U(VI) to easily separable (UO2)O2·2H2O(s) provides valuable input for disposal applications of radioactive wastewater and broadens the horizons of nuclear energy utilization toward the advancement of carbon neutrality. Abstract

Simple Summary: As a zoonotic pathogen, the exploration of new virulence-related genes and the functional identification of Streptococcus suis are of positive significance in revealing the pathogenic mechanism of the strain and developing new vaccines. This study provides evidence that the sugC gene is a virulence-related gene of the Streptococcus suis serotype 2 strain and plays a crucial role in regulating its adhesion and invasion. The sugC gene is a coding gene for the ATP-binding transporter-associated protein, which has been reported to exist in the highly virulent Streptococcus suis. In order to reveal the effect of the sugC gene on the virulence of Streptococcus suis serotype 2, TJS75, a wild-type strain, was used as a parent strain, and a knockout sugC strain and complementary strain were successfully constructed via homologous recombination technology. We found that the adhesion and invasion abilities of the knockout sugC strain in PK-15 cells were decreased. Most importantly, the knockout of the sugC gene could reduce the incidence rate, mortality and LD50 value of TJS75 in BALB/c mice. These results provide a reference for us to further study the pathogenic mechanism of Streptococcus suis. The sugC gene of Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a coding gene for the ATP-binding transporter-associated protein with strong pathogenicity. In order to reveal the effect of the sugC gene on the virulence of S. suis serotype 2, a wild-type strain of TJS75, isolated from fattening pigs' brain tissue samples, was used as a parent strain, and a knockout sugC gene (ΔsugC) and complementary strain (CΔsugC) were successfully constructed via homologous recombination technology. The biological characteristics of TJS75, ΔsugC and CΔsugC were compared and analyzed through growth curves, biochemical characteristics, hemolysis characteristics, cell infection tests and pathogenicity tests on BALB/c mice. The results of the growth characteristic experiments in vitro showed that the plateau stage growth period of ΔsugC was delayed compared to the TJS75 strain, but there was no difference in the total number of bacteria. The biochemical characteristics and hemolysis ability of ΔsugC in sheep blood had no difference compared with TJS75, but its adhesion and invasion abilities in PK-15 cells were decreased. Knockout of the sugC gene had no impact on the expression levels of adhesion-related genes in TJS75 in real-time PCR analysis. In addition, the LD50 of ΔsugC in BALB/c mice was 1.47 × 108 CFU, seven times higher than that of TJS75 (LD50 = 2.15 × 107 CFU). These results illustrate that the deletion of sugC reduced the virulence of TJS75 to BALB/c mice, but its role in the adhesion and invasion of PK-15 cells in this strain needs to be further explored. In summary, this study provides evidence that the sugC gene is a virulence-related gene in the S. suis serotype 2 strain and plays a crucial role in the adhesion and invasion of S. suis. 40. Piezoelectric Effect-Mediating Reactive Oxygen Species in NiTiO3Nanorods for Photocatalytic Removal of U(VI)

Abstract

Piezoelectric catalysis could convert mechanical energy into chemical energy, which can combine with solar energy for a high-efficiency piezo-photocatalysis reaction. In this work, NiTiO3nanorods were synthesized via the sol–gel method and initially employed for the removal of U(VI) from radioactive-contaminated water. The NiTiO3nanorods will generate an internal electric field in an ultrasonic environment, which could greatly improve the performance of piezo-photocatalysis in reducing U(VI) by promoting the generation of photoexcited electrons and reactive oxygen species (ROS). After exposure to visible light and ultrasound for 3 h, the NTO-R-1 exhibited superb U(VI) degradation efficiency of 93.91%, which was 2.58, 6.15, and 6.68 times greater than those of visible light, ultrasonic irradiation, and dark, respectively. Moreover, photoexcited electrons and oxygen-active species play a decisive role in the piezo-photocatalysis process. Therefore, NiTiO3with excellent piezo-photocatalysis properties exhibits good potential for the development of efficient wastewater purification catalysts and also helps to probe the possible mechanism of piezo-photocatalysis removal of U(VI) in wastewater.

50. Hollow S-Doped ZnFe2O4Microcubes with Magnetic Separability for Photocatalytic Removal of Uranium(VI) under Different Light Intensity

Abstract

Under xenon lamps, ZnFe2O4(ZFO) has been shown to be effective in removing uranium through photocatalysis. However, its performance is still inadequate in low-light environments due to low photon utilization and high electron–hole complexation. Herein, S-doped hollow ZnFe2O4microcubes (Sx-H-ZFO, x = 1, 3, 6, 9) were synthesized using the MOF precursor template method. The hollow morphology improves the utilization of visible light by refracting and reflecting the incident light multiple times within the confined domain. S doping narrows the band gap and shifts the conduction band position negatively, which enhances the separation, migration, and accumulation of photogenerated charges. Additionally, S doping increases the number of adsorption sites, ultimately promoting efficient surface reactions. Consequently, Sx-H-ZFO is capable of removing U(VI) in low-light environments. Under cloudy and rainy weather conditions, the photocatalytic rate of S3-H-ZFO was 100.31 μmol/(g·h), while under LED lamps (5000 Lux) it was 72.70 μmol/(g·h). More interestingly, a systematic mechanistic investigation has revealed that S doping replaces some of the oxygen atoms to enhance electron transfers and adsorption of O2. This process initiates the formation of hydrogen peroxide, which reacts directly with UO22+to form solid studtite (UO2)O2·2H2O. Additionally, the promising magnetic separation capability of Sx-H-ZFO facilitates the recycling and reusability of the material. This work demonstrates the potential of ZnFe2O4extraction uranium from nuclear wastewater.
