Narrow-gap rare-earth Zintl phases frequently exhibit fascinating physical phenomena due to their various crystal structures, complex magnetic properties, and tunable transport behaviors. Here we report the synthesis, magnetic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of a Eu-containing Zintl arsenide, Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$, which consists of infinite chains of Eu cations and anionic frameworks constructed from corner-sharing ZnAs$_4$ tetrahedra. Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$ exhibits complicated magnetic behavior owing to intricate exchange interactions mediated by the discrete anionic fragments. Two long-range magnetic transitions at 22 K ($T_\mathrm{N}$) and 9 K ($T^*$), as well as exceptionally strong ferromagnetic fluctuations around 29 K ($T_\mathrm{F}$), are indicated by the susceptibility, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. Besides, Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$ displays metallic behavior, attributable to the hole carriers doped by slight Eu vacancies or the mixed valence of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$. A prominent resistivity peak occurs around $T_\mathrm{N}$, which is rapidly suppressed by the applied field, leading to a prominent negative magnetoresistance effect. A resistivity hysteresis is observed below 5 K, caused by a small net ferromagnetic component. Our study presents the distinct magnetic and transport properties of Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$, and further experiments are required to elucidate the origin of these novel behaviors. Moreover, our findings demonstrate that Eu-based Zintl phases are a fertile ground to study the interplay between magnetism and charge transport.

In recent years, the investigation of low-dimensional ferroelectrics has attracted great attention for their promising applications in nano devices. Piezoelectricity is one of the most core properties of ferroelectric materials, which plays the essential role in micro-electromechanical systems. Very recently, the anomalous negative piezoelectricity has been predicted/discovered in many quasi-two-dimensional layered ferroelectric materials. In this Topical Review, we will briefly introduce on the negative piezoelectricity in quasi-two/one-dimensional ferroelectrics, including its fundamental concept, typical materials, theoretical predictions, as well as experimental phenomena. The underlying physical mechanisms for negative piezoelectricity are divergent and varying from case by case, which can be categorized into four types. First, the soft van der Waals layer is responsible for the volume shrinking upon pressure while the electric dipoles is from non van der Waals layer. Second, the noncollinearity of local dipoles creates a ferrielectricity, which leads to orthogonal ferroelectric and antiferroelectric axes. Third, the electric dipoles come from interlayer/interchain couplings, which can be enhanced during the volume shrinking. Fourth, the special buckling structure contributes to local dipoles, which can be enhanced upon pressure. In real materials, more than one mechanism may work together. Collinear dipole orders such as ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity have developed rapidly in last decades. While, the noncollinear dipole orders are rarely touched in solids. Noncollinear dipole orders can provide a route to realize ferrielectricity. Based on first-principles calculations, an inorganic molecular crystal MnO$_3$Cl has been demonstrated to own intrinsic noncollinear ferrielectricity, which originates from the stereo orientations of polar molecules. The large negative piezoelectricity effect ($d_{33}\sim-27$ pC/N) is also predicted. A strong light absorption and moderate optical anisotropy are found for this molecular crystal in the ultraviolet light window. Additionally, by electron doping via hydrogen intercalation, a ferromagnetic polar half-metals can be obtained. To effectively track and manipulate topological solitons (e.g. skyrmions) are the key challenge before their applications. Inspired by the idea of sliding ferroelectricity, here a general strategy is proposed to print magnetic skyrmions to electric skyrmions in van der Waals bilayers. Through the proximate interactions, there is an isoperiodic bijection relationship between local dipoles and spin moments. This magnetoelectric imprint effect not only extends the strategies to create electric skyrmions, but also leads to an approach for all-electrical readout/manipulation of magnetic skyrmions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Magnetically induced ferroelectrics in multiferroics provide an optimal approach to pursuit intrinsically strong magnetoelectricity. However, the complex antiferromagnetism, faint magnetically induced polarization, and low working temperatures make their magnetoelectric performance incompetent from the applications demands. Here, a family of two-dimensional $5d$ halides Os$X_2$ monolayers is predicted to be ferroelectric and ferromagnetic above room temperature. More interestingly, benefiting from the strong spin-orbital coupling and high-spin state of Os$^{2+}$ ion, the magnetically induced ferroelectric polarization can reach $5.9$ $\mu$C/cm$^2$, a record-large value in type-II multiferroics. The magnetoelectric effect, that is, controlling ferroelectric polarization by magnetic field has been demonstrated, and magnetically driven ferrovalley also emerges in this system. Over the past five years, significant progress has been made in understanding the magnetism and electronic properties of CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type Eu$M_2X_2$ ($M$ = Zn, Cd; $X$ = P, As) compounds. Prior theoretical work and experimental studies suggested that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ had the potential to host rich topological phases, particularly an ideal magnetic Weyl semimetal state when the spins are polarized along the c axis. However, this perspective is challenged by recent experiments utilizing samples featuring ultra-low carrier densities, as well as meticulous calculations employing various approaches. Nonetheless, the Eu$M_2X_2$ family still exhibit numerous novel properties that remain to be satisfactorily explained, such as the giant nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and the colossal magnetoresistance effect. Moreover, Eu$M_2X_2$ compounds can be transformed from semiconducting antiferromagnets to metallic ferromagnets by introducing a small number of carriers or applying external pressure, and a further increase in the ferromagnetic transition temperature can be achieved by reducing the unit cell volume. These features make the Eu$M_2X_2$ family a fertile platform for studying the interplay between magnetism and charge transport, and an excellent candidate for applications in spintronics. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the magnetic and transport behaviors of Eu$M_2X_2$ compounds with varying carrier densities, as well as the current insights into these characteristics. An outlook for future research opportunities is also provided.

Electric field control of magnetism in solids, i.e. the converse magnetoelectricity, is highly desired for applications of scalable energy-efficient logic devices. However, it is not only a technical challenge but also a scientific paradox, since in principle the electric and magnetic degrees of freedom obey distinct rules of symmetries. Despite the great progresses obtained in the community of multiferroics during the past decades, the success of magnetoelectricity remains on its way and more alternative approaches with conceptual revolution are urgently needed. Here, by introducing the concept of topology into multiferroics, an exotic magnetoelectric double-leaf Riemann-surface is unveiled based on the mechanism of spin-dependent $d-p$ hybridization in a two-dimensional magnet: GdI$_2$ monolayer. Protected by the topology, a $180^\circ$ spin reversal can be precisely achieved by an electric cycle, leading to a robust and dissipationless converse magnetoelectric function. Such a topological magnetoelectricity allows the nontrivial manipulation of magnetization by AC electric field. Since the discovery of two-dimensional ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials, the van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures constructed by ferroelectric and ferromagnetic monolayers have soon become the ideal platforms to achieve converse magnetoelectric functions at the nanoscale, namely to use electric field to control magnetization. In this Letter, by employing density functional theory calculations and dynamic simulations of atomic spin model, we study the key role of interfacial Dzyaloshinshii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in CrI$_3$-In$_2$Se$_3$ vdW heterostructures. Our work demonstrates feasible DMI torques pumped by ferroelectric switching, which can drive current-free and low-energy consumption domain wall motion. Sliding ferroelectricity was originally proposed to elucidate the out-of-plane polarization generated by a specific stacking arrangement of non-polar van der Waals layers. However, the concept of sliding ferroelectricity can be generalized to more geometries. Here, the NbI$_4$ bulk is theoretical demonstrated as a quasi-one-dimensional sliding ferroelectric material, which exhibits a polarization of $0.11$ $\mu$C/cm$^2$ perpendicular to the Nb's chains. The most possible ferroelectric switching path is found to be via the interchain sliding along the chain direction, while other paths like Peierls-dimerization of Nb pairs may also work. Moreover, its polarization can be augmented for $82\%$ by hydrostatic pressure up to $10$ GPa, beyond which NbI$_4$ becomes a polar metal. Materials that exhibit strongly coupled magnetic order and electronic properties are crucial for both fundamental research and technological applications. However, finding a material that not only shows remarkable magnetoresistive responses but also has an easily tunable ground state remains a challenge. Here, we report successful manipulation of the magnetic and transport properties of EuCd$_2$P$_2$, which is transformed from an A-type antiferromagnet ($T_\mathrm{N}$ = 11 K) exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance into a ferromagnet ($T_\mathrm{C}$ = 47 K) with metallic behavior. The dramatic alteration results from a low hole concentration of $10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$ induced by changing the growth conditions. Electronic structure and total energy calculations confirm the tunability of magnetism with a small carrier concentration for EuCd$_2$P$_2$. It is feasible to switch between the magnetic states by using field-effect to control the carrier density, thereby changing the magneto-electronic response. The controllable magnetism and electrical transport of EuCd$_2$P$_2$ make it a potential candidate for spintronics.

EuZn$_2$P$_2$ was reported to be an insulating antiferromagnet with $T_\mathrm{N}$ of 23.5 K. In this study, single crystals of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ exhibiting metallic behavior and a ferromagnetic order of 72 K ($T_\mathrm{C}$) are successfully synthesized via a salt flux method. The presence of hole carriers induced by the Eu vacancies in the lattice is found to be crucial for the drastic changes in magnetism and electrical transport. The carriers mediate the interlayer ferromagnetic interaction, and the coupling strength is directly related to $T_\mathrm{C}$, as evidenced by the linear dependence of $T_\mathrm{C}$ and the fitted Curie-Weiss temperatures on the Eu-layer distances for ferromagnetic Eu$M_2X_2$ ($M$ = Zn, Cd; $X$ = P, As). The ferromagnetic EuZn$_2$P$_2$ shows conspicuous negative magnetoresistance (MR) near $T_\mathrm{C}$, owing to strong magnetic scattering. The MR behavior is consistent with the Majumdar-Littlewood model, indicating that the MR can be enhanced by decreasing the carrier density. Our findings suggest that Eu$M_2X_2$ has highly tunable magnetism and charge transport, making it a promising material family for potential applications in spintronics.

Stereo image super-resolution (SR) refers to the reconstruction of a high-resolution (HR) image from a pair of low-resolution (LR) images as typically captured by a dual-camera device. To enhance the quality of SR images, most previous studies focused on increasing the number and size of feature maps and introducing complex and computationally intensive structures, resulting in models with high computational complexity. Here, we propose a simple yet efficient stereo image SR model called NAFRSSR, which is modified from the previous state-of-the-art model NAFSSR by introducing recursive connections and lightweighting the constituent modules. Our NAFRSSR model is composed of nonlinear activation free and group convolution-based blocks (NAFGCBlocks) and depth-separated stereo cross attention modules (DSSCAMs). The NAFGCBlock improves feature extraction and reduces number of parameters by removing the simple channel attention mechanism from NAFBlock and using group convolution. The DSSCAM enhances feature fusion and reduces number of parameters by replacing 1x1 pointwise convolution in SCAM with weight-shared 3x3 depthwise convolution. Besides, we propose to incorporate trainable edge detection operator into NAFRSSR to further improve the model performance. Four variants of NAFRSSR with different sizes, namely, NAFRSSR-Mobile (NAFRSSR-M), NAFRSSR-Tiny (NAFRSSR-T), NAFRSSR-Super (NAFRSSR-S) and NAFRSSR-Base (NAFRSSR-B) are designed, and they all exhibit fewer parameters, higher PSNR/SSIM, and faster speed than the previous state-of-the-art models. In particular, to the best of our knowledge, NAFRSSR-M is the lightest (0.28M parameters) and fastest (50 ms inference time) model achieving an average PSNR/SSIM as high as 24.657 dB/0.7622 on the benchmark datasets. Developing solid-state hydrogen storage materials is as pressing as ever, which requires a comprehensive understanding of the dehydrogenation chemistry of a solid-state hydride. Transition state search and kinetics calculations are essential to understanding and designing high-performance solid-state hydrogen storage materials by filling in the knowledge gap that current experimental techniques cannot measure. However, the ab initio analysis of these processes is computationally expensive and time-consuming. Searching for descriptors to accurately predict the energy barrier is urgently needed, to accelerate the prediction of hydrogen storage material properties and identify the opportunities and challenges in this field. Herein, we develop a data-driven model to describe and predict the dehydrogenation barriers of a typical solid-state hydrogen storage material, magnesium hydride (MgH2), based on the combination of the crystal Hamilton population orbital of Mg-H bond and the distance between atomic hydrogen. By deriving the distance energy ratio, this model elucidates the key chemistry of the reaction kinetics. All the parameters in this model can be directly calculated with significantly less computational cost than conventional transition state search, so that the dehydrogenation performance of hydrogen storage materials can be predicted efficiently. Finally, we found that this model leads to excellent agreement with typical experimental measurements reported to date and provides clear design guidelines on how to propel the performance of MgH2 closer to the target set by the United States Department of Energy (US-DOE).

Interlayer stacking order has recently emerged as a unique degree of freedom to control crystal symmetry and physical properties in two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials and heterostructures. By tuning the layer stacking pattern, symmetry-breaking and electric polarization can be created in otherwise non-polar crystals, whose polarization reversal depends on the interlayer sliding motion. Herein, we demonstrate that in a vdW layered ferroelectric, its existing polarization is closely coupled to the interlayer sliding driven by hydrostatic pressure. Through combined structural, electrical, vibrational characterizations, and theoretical calculations, we clearly map out the structural evolution of CuInP2S6 under pressure. A tendency towards a high polarization state is observed in the low-pressure region, followed by an interlayer-sliding-mediated phase transition from a monoclinic to a trigonal phase. Along the transformation pathway, the displacive-instable Cu ion serves as a pivot point that regulates the interlayer interaction in response to external pressure. The rich phase diagram of CuInP2S6, which is enabled by stacking orders, sheds light on the physics of vdW ferroelectricity and opens an alternative route to tailoring long-range order in vdW layered crystals., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Owing to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the related fascinating physical properties, heavy 5d transition-metals exhibit desirable application prospects. However, up to now, the 5d magnetic materials are still very limited, especially very rare for tungsten. In this work, we theoretically predict a two-dimensional multiferroic W3Cl8 monolayer. Intrinsic 5d magnetism of tungsten is activated by the W ions' fractional valence in a breathing Kagome lattice of reduced effective dimension. A coplanar Y-type antiferromagnetism composed by ferromagnetic W3 trimers is confirmed as the magnetic ground state. The spontaneous ferroelectric polarization mainly originates from the ion displacement induced by the breathing distortion of Kagome lattice. An intrinsic magneto-optical Kerr effect with sizable Kerr angle can be observed to detect this trimeric Y-type antiferromagnetism, and it depends strongly on the detailed magnetic order. Thereby, we propose a general scheme for realizing more 5d magnetism in two-dimensional multiferroic systems.

With the rise of two-dimensional (2D) materials, unique properties that are completely distinct from bulk counterparts continue to emerge at low-dimensional scales, presenting numerous opportunities and challenges. It also provides a new perspective for the study of transition metal system. Here, based on density functional theory (DFT), the physical properties of 2D monolayer LiV2S4 have been studied. Remarkable changes have been observed, i.e., vanadium dimerization, ferromagnetism, charge distribution and metal-insulator transition (MIT). Tuning of ferroic phases provides great opportunities for material functionalities, especially in two-dimensional materials. Here, a $4f$ rare-earth carbide Gd$_2$C monolayer is predicted to be ferromagnetic metal with large magnetization, inherited from its bulk property. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a strategy that the surface passivation can effectively tune its ferroicity, namely switching among ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and ferroelectric phases. Metal-insulator transition also occurs accompanying these ferroic transitions. Our calculation also suggests that the magneto-optic Kerr effect and second harmonic generation are effective methods to monitor these phase transitions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Negative piezoelectrics contract in the direction of applied electric field, which are opposite to normal piezoelectrics and rare in dielectric materials. The raising of low dimensional ferroelectrics, with unconventional mechanisms of polarity, opens a fertile branch for candidates with prominent negative piezoelectricity. Here, the distorted $\alpha$-Bi monolayer, a newly-identified elementary ferroelectric with puckered black phosphorous-like structure [J. Guo, {\it et al}. Nature \textbf{617}, 67 (2023)], is computationally studied, which manifests a large negative in-plane piezoelectricity (with $d_{33}\sim-26$ pC/N). Its negative piezoelectricity originates from its unique buckling ferroelectric mechanism, namely the inter-column sliding. Consequently, a moderate tensile strain can significantly reduce its ferroelectric switching energy barrier, while the compressive strain can significantly enhance its prominent nonlinear optical response. Multi-functional manipulation of magnetic topological textures such as skyrmions and bimerons in energy-efficient ways is of great importance for spintronic applications, but still being a big challenge. Here, by first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations, the creation and annihilation of skyrmions/bimerons, as key operations for the reading and writing of information in spintronic devices, are achieved in van der Waals magnetoelectric CrISe/In2Se3 heterostructure via perpendicular strain or electric field without external magnetic field. Besides, the bimeron-skyrmion conversion, size modulation and the reversible magnetization switching from in-plane to out-of-plane could also be realized in magnetic-field-free ways. Moreover, the topological charge and morphology can be precisely controlled by a small magnetic field. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and tunable magnetic anisotropy energy in a wide window are found to play vital roles in such energy efficient multi-functional manipulation, and the underlying physical mechanisms are elucidated. We report a quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain compound BaNiTe2O7. This magnetic system has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction. These results indicate that BaNiTe2O7 develops a short-range magnetic correlation around T ~ 22 K. With further cooling, an antiferromagnetic phase transition is observed at TN ~ 5.4 K. Neutron powder diffraction revealed antiferromagnetic noncollinear order with a commensurate propagation vector k = (1/2, 1, 0). The refined magnetic moment size of Ni2+ at 1.5 K is 1.84{\mu}B, and its noncollinear spin texture is confirmed by first-principles calculations. Linear magnetoelectric effect is an attractive phenomenon in condensed matters and provides indispensable technological functionalities. Here a colossal linear magnetoelectric effect with diagonal component alfa_33 reaching up to ~480 ps/m is reported in a polar magnet Fe2Mo3O8, and this effect can persist in a broad range of magnetic field (~20 T) and is orders of magnitude larger than reported values in literature. Such an exceptional experimental observation can be well reproduced by a theoretical model affirmatively unveiling the vital contributions from the exchange striction, while the sign difference of magnetocrystalline anisotropy can also be reasonably figured out., Comment: 14 pages and 4 figures

The concept of topology has been widely applied to condensed matter, going beyond the band crossover in reciprocal spaces. A recent breakthrough suggested unconventional topological physics in a quadruple perovskite TbMn$_3$Cr$_4$O$_{12}$, whose magnetism-induced polarization manifests a unique Roman surface topology [Nat. Commun. \textbf{13}, 2373 (2022)]. However, the available experimental evidence based on tiny polarizations of polycrystalline samples is far from sufficient. Here, this topological multiferroicity is demonstrated by using density functional theory calculations, which ideally confirms the Roman surface trajectory of magnetism-induced polarization. The spin-fermion model was previously successful to describe the complex phase diagrams of colossal magnetoresistive manganites and iron-based superconductors. In recent years, two-dimensional magnets have rapidly raised up as a new attractive branch of quantum materials, which are theoretically described based on classical spin models in most studies. Alternatively, here the two-orbital spin-fermion model is established as a uniform scenario to describe the ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. This model connects the magnetic interactions with the electronic structures. Then the continuous tuning of magnetism in these honeycomb lattices can be predicted, based on a general phase diagram. The electron/hole doping, from the empty $e_{g}$ to half-filled $e_{g}$ limit, is studied as a benchmark. Our Monte Carlo result finds that the ferromagnetic $T_{C}$ reaches the maximum at the quarter-filled case. In other regions, the linear relationship between $T_{C}$ and doping concentration provides a theoretical guideline for the experimental modulations of two-dimensional ferromagnetism tuned by ionic liquid or electrical gating.

Weak antilocalization (WAL) effect is commonly observed in 2D systems, or 3D topological insulators, topological semimetal systems. Here we report the clear sign of WAL effect in high quality Ta$_{0.7}$Nb$_{0.3}$Sb$_2$ single crystals, in below 50$^\circ$ K region. The chemical vapor transport method was employed to grow the single crystal samples, the high crystallization quality and uniform element distribution are verified by X-ray diffractions and electron microscopy techniques. Employing the Hall effect and two-band model fitting, the high carrier mobility (> 1000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ in 2 to 300$^\circ$ K region) and off-compensation electron/hole ratio are obtained. Due to the different angular dependence of WAL effect and the fermiology of Ta$_{0.7}$Nb$_{0.3}$Sb$_2$ single crystal, interesting magnetic-field-induced symmetry change is observed in angular magnetoresistance. These interesting transport properties will lead to more theoretical and applicational exploration in Ta$_{0.7}$Nb$_{0.3}$Sb$_2$ and related semimetal materials., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Topological insulators are emerging materials with insulating bulk and symmetry protected nontrivial surface states. One of the most fascinating transport behaviors in a topological insulator is the quantized anomalous Hall insulator, which has been observed inmagnetic-topological-insulator-based devices. In this work, we report a successful doping of rare earth element Tb into Bi$_{1.08}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_2$S topological insulator single crystals, in which the Tb moments are antiferromagnetically ordered below ~10 K. Benefiting from the in-bulk-gap Fermi level, transport behavior dominant by the topological surface states is observed below ~ 150 K. At low temperatures, strong Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed, which exhibit 2D-like behavior. The topological insulator with long range magnetic ordering in rare earth doped Bi$_{1.08}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_2$S single crystal provides an ideal platform for quantum transport studies and potential applications., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

With the field of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials expanding rapidly, noncollinear topological magnetic textures in 2D materials are attracting growing interest recently. As the in-plane counterpart of magnetic skyrmions, magnetic bimerons have the same topological advantages, but are rarely observed in experiments. Employing first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we predict that the centrosymmetric transition metal halide CoX2 (X = Cl, Br) monolayers can be promising candidates for observing the frustration-induced bimerons. These bimerons crystallize into stable triangular lattice under an appropriate magnetic field. Compared to the skyrmions driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or the long-ranged magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, these frustration-induced bimerons have much smaller size and flexible tunability. Furthermore, the biaxial strain provides an effective method to tune the frustration and thereby to tune the bimeron lattice. In detail, for CoCl2 monolayer, tensile strain can be applied to generate bimeron lattice, further shrink bimeron size and increase the density of bimerons. Abundant chemical diversity and structural tunability make organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) a rich ore for ferroelectrics. However, compared with their inorganic counterparts such as BaTiO$_3$, their ferroelectric key properties, including large spontaneous polarization ($P_s$), low coercive field ($E_c$), and strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response, have long been great challenges, which hinder their commercial applications. Here, a quasi-one-dimensional OIHP DMAGeI$_3$ (DMA=Dimethylamine) is reported, with notable ferroelectric attributes at room temperature: a large $P_s$ of 24.14 $\mu$C/cm$^2$ (on a par with BaTiO$_3$), a low $E_c$ below 2.2 kV/cm, and the strongest SHG intensity in OIHP family (about 12 times of KH$_2$PO$_4$ (KDP)). Revealed by the first-principles calculations, its large $P_s$ originates from the synergistic effects of the stereochemically active $4s^2$ lone pair of Ge$^{2+}$ and the ordering of organic cations, and its low kinetic energy barrier of small DMA cations results in a low $E_c$. Our work brings the comprehensive ferroelectric performances of OIHPs to a comparable level with commercial inorganic ferroelectric perovskites.

As a recent successfully exfoliated non van der Waals layered material, AgCrS2 has received a lot of attentions. Motivated by its structure related magnetic and ferroelectric behavior, a theoretical study on its exfoliated monolayer AgCr2S4 has been carried out in the present work. Based on density functional theory, the ground state and magnetic order of monolayer AgCr2S4 have been determined. The centrosymmetry emerges upon two-dimensional confinement and thus eliminates the bulk polarity. Moreover, two-dimensional ferromagnetism appears in the CrS2 layer of AgCr2S4 and can persist up to room temperature. The surface adsorption has also been taken into consideration, which shows a nonmonotonic effect on the ionic conductivity through ion displacement of the interlayer Ag, but has little impact on the layered magnetic structure., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

A-type antiferromagnetism, with an in-plane ferromagnetic order and the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling, owns inborn advantages for electrical manipulations but is naturally rare in real materials except in those artificial antiferromagnetic heterostructures. Here, a robust layered antiferromagnetism with a high N\'eel temperature is predicted in a MXene Cr$_2$CCl$_2$ monolayer, which provides an ideal platform as a magnetoelectric field effect transistor. Based on first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that an electric field can induce the band splitting between spin-up and spin-down channels. Although no net magnetization is generated, the inversion symmetry between the lower Cr layer and the upper Cr layer is broken via electronic cloud distortions. Moreover, this electric field can be replaced by a proximate ferroelectric layer for nonvolatility. The magneto-optic Kerr effect can be used to detect this magnetoelectricity, even if it is a collinear antiferromagnet with zero magnetization.

We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) of the two-dimensional heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3/CrI3 by using density functional theory calculations and symmetry analysis. The spontaneous polarization in the In2Se3 ferroelectric layer and the antiferromagnetic ordering in CrI3 layers break the mirror symmetry and the timereversal symmetry, thus activating MOKE. We show that the Kerr angle can be switched by either the polarization or the antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our results suggest that ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic 2D heterostructures could be exploited for ultra-compact information storage devices, where the information is encoded by the two ferroelectric or the two time-reversed antiferromagnetic states, and the read-out performed optically by MOKE.

The intrinsic magnetism observed in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials provides a unique opportunity for exploring the 2D topological magnetic textures, in particular skyrmionic magnetic textures (SMTs) including skyrmion and its topological equivalents. Since the experimental discovery of skyrmions in the 2D vdW materials and their heterostructures, a critical challenge lies in the control of these SMTs to translate their intriguing features into spintronic applications. Here, we review the recent experimental and theoretical progresses on the modulations of SMTs in 2D vdW monolayer materials and their heterostructures. Besides well-established basic modulation factors including temperature, magnetic field and sample thickness, we present the experimental realization of mobility and transition driven by electric current, and the theoretical prediction of diverse magnetoelectric modulations by electric field. Sliding ferroelectricity is a recently observed polarity existing in two-dimensional materials. However, due to their weak polarization and poor electrical insulation in these materials, all available experimental evidence till now are indirect, with most based on transport properties in the nanoscale or piezoresponse force microscopy. We report the direct observation of sliding ferroelectricity, using a high-quality amphidynamic single crystal, (15-Crown-5)Cd$_3$Cl$_6$, which possesses a large band-gap and so allows direct measurement of P-E hysteresis. This coordination polymer is a van der Waals material, which is composed of inorganic stators and organic rotators as measured using XRD and NMR characterisation. From DFT calculations, we find that after the freezing of rotators an electric dipole is generated in each layer driven by the geometric mechanism, meanwhile a comparable ferroelectric polarization originates from the interlayer sliding. The net polarization of these two components can be directly measured and manipulated. Subtyping neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia is essential for improving the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases. Subtyping schizophrenia is challenging because it is polygenic and genetically heterogeneous, rendering the standard symptom-based diagnosis often unreliable and unrepeatable. We developed a novel network-based machine-learning approach, netMoST, to subtyping psychiatric disorders. NetMoST identifies polygenic risk SNP-allele modules from genome-wide genotyping data as polygenic haplotype biomarkers (PHBs) for disease subtyping. We applied netMoST to subtype a cohort of schizophrenia subjects into three distinct biotypes with differentiable genetic, neuroimaging and functional characteristics. The PHBs of the first biotype (36.9% of all patients) were related to neurodevelopment and cognition, the PHBs of the second biotype (28.4%) were enriched for neuroimmune functions, and the PHBs of the third biotype (34.7%) were associated with the transport of calcium ions and neurotransmitters. Neuroimaging patterns provided additional support to the new biotypes, with unique regional homogeneity (ReHo) patterns observed in the brains of each biotype compared with healthy controls. Our findings demonstrated netMoST's capability for uncovering novel biotypes of complex diseases such as schizophrenia.
