One of the main open questions in the field of luminous ($L_{\rm bol}>10^{47}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) quasars (QSOs) at $z \gtrsim 6$ is the rapid formation ($< 1\,$Gyr) of their supermassive black holes (SMBHs). For this work we analysed the relation between the X-ray properties and other properties describing the physics and growth of both the accretion disc and the SMBH in QSOs at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The sample consists of 21 $z>6$ QSOs, which includes 16 sources from the rapidly grown QSOs from the HYPERION sample and five other luminous QSOs with available high-quality archival X-ray data. We discovered a strong and statistically significant ($>3\sigma$) relation between the X-ray continuum photon index ($\Gamma$) and the $\rm C\,IV$ disc wind velocity ($v_{\rm C\,IV}$) in $z>6$ luminous QSOs, whereby the higher the $v_{\rm C\,IV}$, the steeper the $\Gamma$. This relation suggests a link between the disc-corona configuration and the kinematics of disc winds. Furthermore, we find evidence at $>2-3\sigma$ level that $\Gamma$ and $v_{\rm C\,IV}$ are correlated to the growth rate history of the SMBH. Although additional data are needed to confirm it, this result may suggest that, in luminous $z>6$ QSOs, the SMBH predominantly grows via fast accretion rather than via initial high seed BH mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report on the second observing program of the active galactic nucleus NGC 4151 with simultaneous Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE; {\sim}750 ks), NuSTAR ({\sim}60 ks), XMM-Newton ({\sim}75 ks), and NICER ({\sim}65 ks) pointings. NGC 4151 is the first Type 1 radio-quiet Seyfert galaxy with constrained polarization properties for the X-ray corona. Despite the lower flux state in which the source is re-observed and the resulting higher contribution of the constant reflection component in the IXPE energy band, our results are in agreement with the first detection. From polarimetric analysis, a polarization degree {\Pi} = 4.7 {\pm} 1.3 percent and angle {\Psi} = 77{\deg} {\pm} 8{\deg} east of north (68 percent confidence level) are derived in the 2.0 - 8.0 keV energy range. Combining the two observations leads to polarization properties that are more constrained than those of the individual detections, showing {\Pi} = 4.5 {\pm} 0.9 percent and {\Psi} = 81{\deg} {\pm} 6{\deg} (with detection significance {\sim}4.6{\sigma}). The observed polarization angle aligns very well with the radio emission in this source, supporting, together with the significant polarization degree, a slab or wedge geometry for the X-ray corona. However, a switch in the polarization angle at low energies (37{\deg} {\pm} 7{\deg} in the 2 - 3.5 keV bin) suggests the presence of another component. When it is included in the spectro-polarimetric fit, a high polarization degree disfavors an interpretation in terms of a leakage through the absorbers, rather pointing to scattering from some kind of mirror., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. The classical nova CP Puppis has been observed to have particularly puzzling and peculiar properties. In particular, this classical nova displays occasional bursts in its long-term ASAS-SN light curve. Here we report on 5 sectors of TESS data displaying 2 of these rapid bursts, lasting ~1 day. Based on the estimated lower energy limits of the bursts we discuss whether the bursts may be examples of micronovae resulting from localised thermonuclear explosion. Furthermore, its orbital period remains uncertain, with several inconsistent periodic signals appearing in spectroscopic and photometric observations at various wavelengths. Although we cannot unambiguously unravel the physical origin of the signals, the previously suggested nature of CP Puppis as a long orbital period system may be a viable explanation. The recurrence time of the bursts in CP Puppis, together with the unexplained variable modulations make it a prime candidate for intense monitoring., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The existence of luminous quasars (QSO) at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR; i.e. z>6) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBH) with masses $\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot$ challenges models of early SMBH formation. To shed light on the nature of these sources we started a multiwavelength programme based on a sample of 18 HYPerluminous quasars at the Epoch of ReionizatION (HYPERION). These are the luminous QSOs whose SMBH must have had the fastest mass growth during the Universe first Gyr. In this paper we present the HYPERION sample and report on the first of the 3 years planned observations of the 2.4 Ms XMM-Newton Multi-Year Heritage program on which HYPERION is based. The goal of this program is to accurately characterize the X-ray nuclear properties of QSOs at the EoR. Through a joint X-ray spectral analysis of 10 sources, in the rest-frame $\sim2-50$ keV range, we report a steep average photon index ($\Gamma\sim2.4\pm0.1$). Absorption is not required. The average $\Gamma$ is inconsistent at $\geq4\sigma$ level with the canonical 1.8-2 value measured in QSO at z<6. This spectral slope is also much steeper than that reported in lower-z QSOs with similar luminosity or accretion rate, thus suggesting a genuine redshift evolution. Alternatively, we can interpret this result as the presence of an unusually low-energy cutoff $E_{cut}\sim20$ keV on a standard $\Gamma=1.9$ power-law. We also report on mild indications that HYPERION QSOs show higher soft X-ray emission at 2 keV compared to the UV one at 2500A than expected by lower-z luminous AGN. We speculate that a redshift-dependent coupling between the corona and accretion disc or intrinsically different coronal properties may account for the steep spectral slopes, especially in the presence of powerful winds. The Type I active galactic nucleus (AGN) ESO 511-G030, a formerly bright and soft-excess dominated source, has been observed in 2019 in the context of a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign. However, in these novel exposures, the source was found in a $\sim$10 times lower flux state, without any trace of the soft-excess. Interestingly, the X-ray weakening corresponds to a comparable fading of the UV suggesting a strong link between these components. The UV/X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) of ESO 511-G030 shows remarkable variability. We tested both phenomenological and physically motivated models on the data finding that the overall emission spectrum of ESO 511-G030 in this extremely low flux state is the superposition of a power-law-like continuum ($\Gamma\sim$1.7) and two reflection components emerging from hot and cold matter. has Both the primary continuum and relativistic reflection are produced in the inner regions. The prominent variability of ESO 511-G030 and the lack of a soft-excess can be explained by the dramatic change in the observed accretion rate, which dropped from an L/L$_{\rm Edd}$ of 2\% in 2007 to 0.2\% in 2019. Microcalorimeters have demonstrated success in delivering high spectral resolution, and have paved the path to revolutionary new science possibilities in the coming decade of X-ray astronomy. There are several research areas in compact object science that can only be addressed with energy resolution Delta(E)<~5 eV at photon energies of a few keV, corresponding to velocity resolution of <~a few hundred km/s, to be ushered in by microcalorimeters. Here, we review some of these outstanding questions, focusing on how the research landscape is set to be transformed (i) at the interface between accreting supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, (ii) in unravelling the structures of accretion environments, (iii) in resolving long-standing issues on the origins of energy and matter feedback, and (iv) to test mass-scaled unification of accretion and feedback. Nova explosions are caused by global thermonuclear runaways triggered in the surface layers of accreting white dwarfs. It has been predicted that localised thermonuclear bursts on white dwarfs can also take place, similar to Type I X-ray bursts observed in accreting neutron stars. Unexplained rapid bursts from the binary system TV Columbae, in which mass is accreted onto a moderately-strong magnetised white dwarf from a low-mass companion, have been observed on several occasions in the past $\approx40$ years. During these bursts the optical/UV luminosity increases by a factor of $>3$ in less than an hour and fades over $\approx10$ hours. Fast outflows have been observed in UV spectral lines, with velocities $>3500$ km s$^{-1}$, comparable to the escape velocity from the white dwarf surface. Here we report on optical bursts observed in TV Columbae as well as in two additional accreting systems, EI Ursae Majoris and ASASSN-19bh. The bursts have a total energy $\approx~10^{-6}$ those of classical nova explosions ("micronovae"), and bear a strong resemblance to Type I X-ray bursts. We exclude accretion or stellar magnetic reconnection events as their origin and suggest thermonuclear runaway events in magnetically-confined accretion columns as a viable explanation., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Black-hole (BH) high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems are likely to be the progenitors of BH-BH mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK). Yet merging BHs reach higher masses ($\sim 100M_{\odot}$) than BHs in HMXBs ($\sim 20 M_{\odot}$) and exhibit lower spins ($a_{\rm BH}\lesssim 0.25$ with a larger values tail) than what is often claimed for BHs in HMXBs ($a_{\rm BH}\gtrsim 0.9$). This could suggest that these two classes of systems belong to different populations, but here we show that this may not necessarily be the case. The difference in masses is easily explained as the known HMXB-BHs are in galaxies with relatively high metallicity, so their progenitor stars are subject to strong mass loss from winds, leading to relatively low-mass BH at core collapse. Conversely, LVK is also able to detect BHs from low-metallicity galaxies that produce more massive stellar-origin BHs. The difference in spin is more difficult to explain. Models with efficient angular momentum transport in stellar interiors produce slowly spinning progenitors for both LVK and HMXB BHs. Known HMXBs have orbital periods that are too long for tidal spin-up and are unlikely to have undergone significant accretion spin-up. Instead, we show that the derived value of the BH spin depends strongly on how the HMXB accretion disc emission is modelled. We argue that since Cyg X-1 is never observed in a soft state, the appropriate spectral models must take into account the Comptonisation of the disc photosphere. We show that such models are consistent with low spin values, namely: $a_{\rm BH}\sim 0.1$. This was confirmed by other teams for both Cyg X-1 and LMC X-1 and we show this is also the case for M33 X-7. We conclude that all HMXB BHs can exhibit low spins, in accordance with stellar evolution models. We report estimates of the X-ray coronal size of active galactic nuclei in the lamppost geometry. In this commonly adopted scenario, the corona is assumed for simplicity to be a point-like X-ray source located on the axis of the accretion disc. However, the corona must intercept a number of optical/UV seed photons from the disc consistent with the observed X-ray flux, which constrains its size. We employ a relativistic ray-tracing code, originally developed by Dov\v{c}iak & Done (2016), that calculates the size of a Comptonizing lamppost corona illuminated by a standard thin disc. We assume that the disc extends down to the innermost stable circular orbit of a non-spinning or a maximally spinning black hole. We apply this method to a sample of 20 Seyfert 1 galaxies, using simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray archival data from XMM-Newton. At least for the sources accreting below the Eddington limit, we find that a Comptonizing lamppost corona can generally exist, but with constraints on its size and height above the event horizon of the black hole depending on the spin. For a maximally spinning black hole, a solution can almost always be found at any height, while for a non-spinning black hole the height must generally be higher than 5 gravitational radii. This is because, for a given luminosity, a higher spin implies more seed photons illuminating the corona due to a larger and hotter inner disc area. We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

Long-term observations have shown that black hole X-ray binaries exhibit strong, aperiodic variability on time-scales of a few milliseconds to seconds. The observed light curves display various characteristic features like a log-normal distribution of flux and a linear rms-flux relation, which indicate that the underlying variability process is stochastic in nature. It is also thought to be intrinsic to accretion. This variability has been modelled as inward propagating fluctuations of mass accretion rate, although the physical process driving the fluctuations remains puzzling. In this work, we analyse five exceptionally long duration general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of optically thin, geometrically thick, black hole accretion flows to look for hints of propagating fluctuations in the simulation data. We find that the accretion profiles from these simulations do show evidence for inward propagating fluctuations below the viscous frequency by featuring strong radial coherence and positive time lags when comparing smaller to larger radii, although these time lags are generally shorter than the viscous time-scale and frequency independent. Our simulations also support the notion that the fluctuations in $\dot{M}$ build up in a multiplicative manner, as the simulations exhibit linear rms-mass flux relations, as well as log-normal distributions of their mass fluxes. When combining the mass fluxes from the simulations with an assumed emissivity profile, we additionally find broad agreement with observed power spectra and time lags, including a recovery of the frequency dependency of the time lags., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables

X-ray irradiation heating of accretion discs in black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) plays a key role in regulating their outburst cycles. However, despite decades of theoretical and observational efforts, the physical mechanism(s) responsible for irradiating these discs remains largely unknown. We have built an observationally-based methodology to estimate the strength of irradiation of BHXB discs by combining multiwavelength X-ray and optical/IR data throughout transient outbursts. We apply this to $\sim15$ yrs of activity in the Galactic BHXB GX339$-$4. Our findings suggest that the irradiation heating required by the optical data is large in this system. Direct illumination of the outer disc does not produce sufficient irradiation, but this should also produce a thermal-radiative wind which adds to the irradiation heating by scattering flux down onto the disc. However, analytic estimates of X-ray illumination from scattering in the wind is still not sufficient to produce the observed heating, even in combination with direct illumination. Either the analytic thermal-radiative wind models are underestimating the effect of the wind, or there are additional scattering mechanisms at work, such as magnetically-driven outflows, acting to increase the optical/IR flux. While wind-driven irradiation is likely a common feature among long-period BHXBs, fully understanding the driving mechanism(s) behind such a wind will require radiation-hydrodynamic simulations., Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures, supplementary figures included in appendices, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

The observed signatures of winds from X-ray binaries are broadly consistent with thermal winds, driven by X-ray irradiation of the outer accretion disc. Thermal winds produce mass outflow rates that can exceed the accretion rate in the disc. We study the impact of this mass loss on the stability and lightcurves of X-ray binaries subject to the thermal-viscous instability, which drives their outbursts. Strong mass loss could shut off outbursts early, as proposed for the 2015 outburst of V404 Cyg. We use an analytical model for thermal (Compton) wind mass loss. Scattering in the strong wind expected of long Porb systems enhances the irradiation heating of the outer disc, keeping it stable against the thermal-viscous instability. This accounts very well for the existence of persistently bright systems with large discs such as Cyg X-2, 1E 1740.7-2942, or GRS 1758-258. Wind mass loss shortens the outburst, as expected, but insufficiently to explain the rapid decay timescale of black hole X-ray binary outbursts. However, varying irradiation due to scattering in the wind produces lightcurves with plateaus in long Porb systems like GRO J1655-40. Mass loss is not a major driver for the outburst dynamics up to luminosities 0.1-0.2 L_Edd. Higher luminosities may produce stronger mass loss but their study is complicated since the wind becomes opaque. Magnetic winds seem more promising to explain the fast decay timescales generically seen in black hole X-ray binaries. Thermal winds can play an important role in the outburst dynamics through the varying irradiation heating. This may be evidenced by relating changes in wind properties, X-ray spectra or luminosity, with changes in the optical emission that traces the outer disc. Metals form an essential part of the Universe at all scales. Without metals we would not exist, and the Cosmos would look completely different. Metals are primarily born through nuclear processes in stars. They leave their cradles through winds or explosions, and then start their journey through space. This can lead them in and out of astronomical objects on all scales, ranging from comets, planets, stars, entire galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies to the largest structures of the Universe. Their wanderings are fundamental in determining how these objects, and the entire universe, evolve. In addition, their bare presence can be used to trace what these structures look like. The scope of this paper is to highlight the most important open astrophysical problems that will be central in the next decades and for which a deep understanding of the Universe-wandering metals, their physical and kinematical states and their chemical composition represents the only viable solution. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. High inclination black hole X-ray binaries exhibit blueshifted ionized absorption lines from disk winds, whose launching mechanism is still in debate. The lines are predominantly observed in the high/soft state and disappear in the low/hard state, anti-correlated with the jet. We have tested if the thermal winds, which are driven by the irradiation of the outer disk by the X-rays from the inner disk, can explain these observed properties or whether we need a magnetic switch between jet and wind. We use analytic thermal-radiative wind models to predict the column density, ionisation parameter and velocity of the wind given the broadband continuum shape and luminosity determined from RXTE monitoring. We use these to simulate the detailed photo-ionised absorption features predicted at epochs where there are Chandra high resolution spectra. These include low/hard, high/soft and very high states. The model was found to well reproduce the observed lines in the high/soft state, and also successfully predicts their disappearance in the low/hard state. However, the simplest version of the thermal wind model also predicts that there should be strong features observed in the very high state, which are not seen in the data. Nonetheless, we show this is consistent with thermal winds when we include self-shielding by the irradiated inner disk atmosphere. These results indicate that the evolution of observed wind properties in different states during outbursts in H 1743-322 can be explained by the thermal wind model and does not require magnetic driving., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Accretion disks around stellar-mass black holes offer unique opportunities to study the fundamental physics of standard thin disks, super-Eddington disks, and structure that may be connected to flux variability. These local analogues of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are particularly attractive for their proximity, high flux, and peak emissivity in the X-ray band. X-ray calorimeter spectrometers, with energy resolutions of 2-5 eV, are ideally suited to study accretion in stellar-mass black holes. The results will make strong tests of seminal disk theory that applies in a broad range of circumstances, help to drive new numerical simulations, and will inform our understanding of AGN fueling, evolution, and feedback., Comment: White Paper, submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

[Abridged] In our previous work on Ark 120, we found that its 2014 X-ray spectrum is dominated by Comptonisation, while the relativistic reflection emission only originates at tens of $R_{\rm g}$ from the SMBH. As a result, we could not constrain the SMBH spin from disc reflection alone. Our aim is to determine its SMBH spin from an alternative technique based on the global energetics of the disc-corona system. The spectral analysis uses simultaneous XMM-Newton (OM and pn) and NuSTAR observations on 2014 March 22 and 2013 February 18. We applied the optxconv model (based on optxagnf) to self consistently reproduce the emission from the inner corona (warm and hot thermal Comptonisation) and the outer disc (colour temperature corrected black body), taking into account both the disc inclination angle and relativistic effects. We modelled the mild relativistic reflection of the incident Comptonisation components using the xilconv model. We infer a SMBH spin of 0.83$^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$, adopting the SMBH reverberation mass of 1.50$\times$10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition, we find that the coronal radius decreases with increasing flux (by about a factor of two), from 85$^{+13}_{-10}$ $R_{\rm g}$ in 2013 to 14$\pm$3 $R_{\rm g}$ in 2014. This is the first time that such a constraint is obtained for a SMBH spin from this technique, thanks to the bare properties of Ark 120, its well determined SMBH mass, and the presence of a mild relativistic reflection component in 2014 which allows us to constrain the disc inclination angle. We caution that these results depend on the detailed disc-corona structure, which is not yet fully established. Swift intensive accretion disk reverberation mapping of four AGN yielded light curves sampled $\sim$200-350 times in 0.3-10 keV X-ray and six UV/optical bands. Uniform reduction and cross-correlation analysis of these datasets yields three main results: 1) The X-ray/UV correlations are much weaker than those within the UV/optical, posing severe problems for the lamp-post reprocessing model in which variations in a central X-ray corona drive and power those in the surrounding accretion disk. 2) The UV/optical interband lags are generally consistent with $ \tau \propto \lambda^{4/3} $ as predicted by the centrally illuminated thin accretion disk model. While the average interband lags are somewhat larger than predicted, these results alone are not inconsistent with the thin disk model given the large systematic uncertainties involved. 3) The one exception is the U band lags, which are on average a factor of $\sim$2.2 larger than predicted from the surrounding band data and fits. This excess appears due to diffuse continuum emission from the broad-line region (BLR). The precise mixing of disk and BLR components cannot be determined from these data alone. The lags in different AGN appear to scale with mass or luminosity. We also find that there are systematic differences between the uncertainties derived by javelin vs. more standard lag measurement techniques, with javelin reporting smaller uncertainties by a factor of 2.5 on average. The spectra of black hole binaries in the low/hard state are complex, with evidence for multiple different Comptonisation regions contributing to the hard X-rays in addition to a cool disc component. We show this explicitly for some of the best RXTE data from Cyg X-1, where the spectrum strongly requires (at least) two different Comptonisation components in order to fit the continuum above 3 keV, where the disc does not contribute. However, it is difficult to constrain the shapes of these Comptonisation components uniquely using spectral data alone. Instead, we show that additional information from fast variability can break this degeneracy. Specifically, we use the observed variability power spectra in each energy channel to reconstruct the energy spectra of the variability on timescales of ~10s, 1s and 0.1s. The two longer timescale spectra have similar shapes, but the fastest component is dramatically harder, and has strong curvature indicating that its seed photons are not from the cool disc. We interpret this in the context of propagating fluctuations through a hot flow, where the outer regions are cooler and optically thick, so that they shield the inner region from the disc. The seed photons for the hot inner region are then from the cooler Comptonisation region rather than the disc itself., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to MNRAS

We report the results of intensive X-ray, UV and optical monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 with Swift. There is no intrinsic flux-related spectral change in the the variable components in any band with small apparent variations due only to contamination by a second constant component, possibly a (hard) reflection component in the X-rays and the (red) host galaxy in the UV/optical bands. Relative to the shortest wavelength band, UVW2, the lags of the other UV and optical bands are mostly in agreement with the predictions of reprocessing of high energy emission from an accretion disc. The U-band lag is, however, far larger than expected, almost certainly because of reprocessed Balmer continuum emission from the more distant broad line region gas. The UVW2 band is well correlated with the X-rays but lags by ~6x more than expected if the UVW2 results from reprocessing of X-rays on the accretion disc. However, if the lightcurves are filtered to remove variations on timescales >5d, the lag approaches the expectation from disc reprocessing. MEMEcho analysis shows that direct X-rays can be the driver of most of the variations in the UV/optical bands as long as the response functions for those bands all have long tails (up to 10d) in addition to a strong peak (from disc reprocessing) at short lag (<1d). We interpret the tails as due to reprocessing from the surrounding gas. Comparison of X-ray to UVW2 and UVW2 to V-band lags for 4 AGN, including NGC 4593, shows that all have UVW2 to V-band lags which exceed the expectations from disc resprocessing by factor < 2. However the X-ray to UVW2 lags are, mostly, in greater excess from the expectations from disc reprocessing and differ between AGN. The largest excess is in NGC 4151. Whilst astronomy as a science is historically founded on observations at optical wavelengths, studying the Universe in other bands has yielded remarkable discoveries, from pulsars in the radio, signatures of the Big Bang at submm wavelengths, through to high energy emission from accreting, gravitationally-compact objects and the discovery of gamma-ray bursts. Unsurprisingly, the result of combining multiple wavebands leads to an enormous increase in diagnostic power, but powerful insights can be lost when the sources studied vary on timescales shorter than the temporal separation between observations in different bands. In July 2015, the workshop "Paving the way to simultaneous multi-wavelength astronomy" was held as a concerted effort to address this at the Lorentz Center, Leiden. It was attended by 50 astronomers from diverse fields as well as the directors and staff of observatories and spaced-based missions. This community white paper has been written with the goal of disseminating the findings of that workshop by providing a concise review of the field of multi-wavelength astronomy covering a wide range of important source classes, the problems associated with their study and the solutions we believe need to be implemented for the future of observational astronomy. X-ray astronomy is our gateway to the hot universe. More than half of the baryons in the cosmos are too hot to be visible at shorter wavelengths. Studying the extreme environments of black hole and neutron star vicinities also requires X-ray observations. With the successful launch of ISRO's AstroSat in 2015, and a few transformative results that emerged from JAXA's Hitomi mission in 2016, a new window has been opened into high sensitivity fast timing and high X-ray spectral resolution. Together with upcoming all-sky survey missions expected very soon, X-ray astronomy is entering a new era of parameter space exploration. The UK has been at the forefront of this field since the 1970s. But flat cash science budgets, compounded with the rising costs of cutting-edge space missions, imply inevitably diminishing roles for the UK in terms of both payload development and science exploitation in the future. To review the novel science possibilities enabled by recent and upcoming missions, and to discuss how to pave the way forward for X-ray astronomy in the UK, a specialist RAS discussion meeting was held in London on Feb 10 2017, summarised herein. Swift monitoring of NGC 4151 with ~6 hr sampling over a total of 69 days in early 2016 is used to construct light curves covering five bands in the X-rays (0.3-50 keV) and six in the ultraviolet (UV)/optical (1900-5500 A). The three hardest X-ray bands (>2.5 keV) are all strongly correlated with no measurable interband lag while the two softer bands show lower variability and weaker correlations. The UV/optical bands are significantly correlated with the X-rays, lagging ~3-4 days behind the hard X-rays. The variability within the UV/optical bands is also strongly correlated, with the UV appearing to lead the optical by ~0.5-1 day. This combination of >~3 day lags between the X-rays and UV and <~1 day lags within the UV/optical appears to rule out the "lamp-post" reprocessing model in which a hot, X-ray emitting corona directly illuminates the accretion disk, which then reprocesses the energy in the UV/optical. Instead, these results appear consistent with the Gardner & Done picture in which two separate reprocessings occur: first, emission from the corona illuminates an extreme-UV-emitting toroidal component that shields the disk from the corona; this then heats the extreme-UV component which illuminates the disk and drives its variability., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies have been identified by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope as a rare class of gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGN). The lowest-redshift candidate among them is the source 1H 0323+342. Here we present quasi-simultaneous Gemini near-infrared and Keck optical spectroscopy for it, from which we derive a black hole mass based on both the broad Balmer and Paschen emission lines. We supplement these observations with a NuSTAR X-ray spectrum taken about two years earlier, from which we constrain the black hole mass based on the short timescale spectral variability. Our multiwavelength observations suggest a black hole mass of ~2x10^7 solar masses, which agrees well with previous estimates. We build the spectral energy distribution and show that it is dominated by the thermal and reprocessed emission from the accretion disc rather than the non-thermal jet component. A detailed spectral fitting with the energy-conserving accretion disc model of Done et al. constrains the Eddington ratio to L/L_Edd ~ 0.5 for a (non-rotating) Schwarzschild black hole and to L/L_Edd ~ 1 for a Kerr black hole with dimensionless spin of a*=0.8. Higher spin values and so higher Eddington ratios are excluded, since they would strongly overpredict the observed soft X-ray flux., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present a new analysis of X-ray spectra of the archetypal ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) Holmberg IX X-1 obtained by the Swift, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observatories. This ULX is a persistent source, with a typical luminosity of ~10^40 erg s^-1, that varied by a factor of 4 - 5 over eight years. We find that its spectra tend to evolve from relatively flat or two-component spectra in the medium energy band (1-6 keV), at lower luminosities, to a spectrum that is distinctly curved and disc-like at the highest luminosities, with the peak energy in the curved spectrum tending to decrease with increased luminosity. We argue that the spectral evolution of the ULX can be explained by super-Eddington accretion models, where in this case we view the ULX down the evacuated funnel along its rotation axis, bounded by its massive radiatively driven wind. The spectral changes then originate in enhanced geometric beaming as the accretion rate increases and wind funnel narrows, causing the scattered flux from the central regions of the supercritical flow to brighten faster than the isotropic thermal emission from the wind, and so the curved hard spectral component to dominate at the highest luminosities. The wind also Compton down-scatters photons at the edge of the funnel, resulting in the peak energy of the spectrum decreasing. We also confirm that Holmberg IX X-1 displays spectral degeneracy with luminosity, and suggest that the observed differences are naturally explained by precession of the black hole rotation axis for the suggested wind geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 18 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables

We use frequency-resolved spectroscopy to examine the energy spectra of the prominent low frequency QPO and its harmonic in GX 339-4. We track the evolution of these spectra as the source makes a transition from a bright low/hard to hard intermediate state. In the hard/intermediate states, the QPO and time averaged spectra are similar and the harmonic is either undetected or similar to the QPO. By contrast, in the softer states the harmonic is dramatically softer than the QPO spectrum and the time averaged spectrum, and the QPO spectrum is dramatically harder than the time averaged spectrum. Clearly, the existance of these very different spectral shaped components mean that the time-averaged spectra are complex. We use the frequency resolved spectra to better constrain the model components, and find that the data are consistent with a time-averaged spectrum which has an additional low temperature, optically thick Comptonisation component. The harmonic can be described by this additional component alone, while the QPO spectrum is similar to that of the hard Comptonisation and its reflection. Neither QPO nor harmonic show signs of the disc component even when it is strong in the time averaged spectrum. While the similarity between the harmonic and QPO spectra in the intermediate state can be produced from the angular dependence of Compton scattering in a single region, this cannot explain the dramatic differences seen in the soft state. Instead, we propose that the soft Compton region is located predominantly above the disc while the hard Compton is from the hotter inner flow. Our results therefore point to multiple possible mechanisms for producing harmonic features in the power spectrum. The dominant mechanism in a given observation is likely a function of both inclination angle and inner disc radius., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. At high luminosities black hole binaries show spectra with a strong disc component accompanied by an equally strong tail where at least some of the electrons are non-thermal. We reanalyze the simultaneous ASCA-RXTE-OSSE data from the 1998 outburst of XTE J1550-564, which span 0.7-1000 keV and remain the best data available of a black hole binary in this state. We reassess the importance of electron-positron pair production using a realistically high value of the source compactness for the first time. The lack of an observable annihilation line together with the observed gamma-ray flux beyond 511 keV constrains the maximum electron Lorentz factor to be leq 10 and the slope of the injected electrons to leq 2.5. We also use the fast (10-50 Hz) variability spectrum to constrain the spatial dependence of the electron heating and acceleration. We find that the spectrum of the fast variability is consistent with being fully thermal, so that the observed non-thermal emission is produced from further out in the flow., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The broad energy range spanned by ASTRO-H instruments, from ~0.3 to 600 keV, with its high spectral resolution calorimeter and sensitive hard X-ray imaging, offers unique opportunities to study black holes and their environments. The ability to measure polarization is particularly novel, with potential sources including blazars, Galactic pulsars and X-ray binaries. In this White Paper, we present an overview of the synergistic instrumental capabilities and the improvements over prior missions. We also show how ASTRO-H fits into the multi-wavelength landscape. We present in more detail examples and simulations of key science ASTRO-H can achieve in a typical 100 ksec observation when data from all four instruments are combined. Specifically, we consider observations of black-hole source (Cyg X-1 and GRS 1915+105), blazars (Mrk 421 and Mrk 501), a quasar (3C 273), radio galaxies (Centaurus A and 3C 120), and active galaxies with a strong starburst (Circinus and NGC 4945). Thanks to extensive observations with X-ray missions and facilities working in other wavelengths, as well as rapidly--advancing numerical simulations of accretion flows, our knowledge of astrophysical black holes has been remarkably enriched. Rapid progress has opened new areas of enquiry, including measurements of black hole spin, the properties and driving mechanisms of jets and disk winds, the impact of feedback into local environments, the origin of periodic and aperiodic X-ray variations, and the nature of super-Eddington accretion flows, among others. There is still 10-20% uncertainty on the neutron star (NS) mass-radius relation. These uncertainties could be reduced by an order of magnitude through an unambiguous measure of M/R from the surface redshift of a narrow line, greatly constraining the Equation of State for ultra-dense material. It is possible that the SXS on ASTRO-H can detect this from an accreting neutron star with low surface velocity in the line of sight i.e. either low inclination or low spin. Currently there is only one known low inclination LMXB, Ser X-1, and one known slow spin LMXB, J17480-2446 in Terzan 5. Ser X-1 is a persistent source which is always in the soft state (banana branch), where the accreting material should form a equatorial belt around the neutron star. A pole-on view should then allow the NS surface to be seen directly. A 100 ks observation should allow us to measure M/R if there are any heavy elements in the photosphere at the poles. Conversely, J17480-2446 in Terzan 5 is a transient accretion powered millisecond pulsar, where the accreting material is collimated onto the magnetic pole in the hard (island) state (L_x < 0.1 L_Edd). The hotspot where the shock illuminates the NS surface is clearly seen in this state. A 100 ks ToO observation of this (or any other similarly slow spin system) in this state, may again allow the surface redshift to be directly measured. RE J2248-511 is one of only 14 non-blazar AGN detected in the far ultraviolet by the ROSAT Wide Field Camera implying a large ultrasoft X-ray flux. This soft X-ray excess is strongly variable on year timescales, a common property of Narrow Line Seyfert 1s, yet its optical linewidths classify this source as a broad-lined Seyfert 1. We use four nearly simultaneous optical--X-ray SEDs spanning 7 years to study the spectral shape and long term variability of RE J2248-511. Here we show that the continuum SED for the brightest epoch dataset is consistent with the mean SED of a standard quasar, and matches well to that from an XMM-SDSS sample of AGN with ~ 10^8 and ~ 0.2. All the correlated optical and soft X-ray variability can be due entirely to a major absorption event. The only remarkable aspect of this AGN is that there is no measurable intrinsic X-ray absorption column in the brightest epoch dataset. The observed FUV flux is determined by the combination of this and the fact that the source lies within a local absorption `hole'. RE J2248-511, whose variable, ultrasoft X-ray flux once challenged its BLS1 classification, demonstrates that characterisation of such objects requires multi-epoch, multi-wavelength campaigns., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. The Advanced Telescope for High-energy Astrophysics (Athena+) is being proposed to ESA as the L2 mission (for a launch in 2028) and is specifically designed to answer two of the most pressing questions for astrophysics in the forthcoming decade: How did ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures we see today? and how do black holes grow and shape the Universe? For addressing these two issues, Athena+ will provide transformational capabilities in terms of angular resolution, effective area, spectral resolution, grasp, that will make it the most powerful X-ray observatory ever flown. Such an observatory, when opened to the astronomical community, will be used for virtually all classes of astrophysical objects, from high-z gamma-ray bursts to the closest planets in our solar neighborhood. The inner radius of the accretion disc around a black hole in the low/hard state can be measured in one of two ways. Firstly, via the extent of broadening of the iron emission line, and secondly, from the luminosity and temperature of the weak soft component seen in this state, assuming it is the disc. We use both of these methods on all the low/hard state spectra taken in timing mode of XMM-Newton's EPIC-pn. We find that the two methods are not consistent with each other, and the difference is not always in a single direction. The two methods are neither model independent, nor are they independent of current calibration issues. We find that the remaining small residuals in the EPIC-pn timing mode response at the <3% level can have a dramatic effect on the fit parameters for the reflected spectrum. There is also a mismatch in cross-calibration with RXTE, which makes it difficult to use simultaneous data to extend the bandpass of the spectral fits. Nonetheless, it is clear from the data that the iron line is noticeably broader and stronger at higher L/LEdd, which is consistent with the truncated disc models. We also show that it is likely that the soft component changes character, from a stable component consistent with a truncated disc at high L/LEdd, to a variable one with much smaller radius at low L/LEdd. This adds to growing evidence for a complex soft component in the low/hard state, possibly resulting from clumps torn from the edge of the truncated disc., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Understanding the astrophysics of feedback in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is key to understanding the growth and co-evolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies. AGN-driven winds/outflows are potentially the most effective way of transporting energy and momentum from the nuclear scales to the host galaxy, quenching star formation by sweeping away the gas reservoir. Key questions in this field are: 1) how do accretion disks around black holes launch winds/outflows, and how much energy do these carry? 2) How are the energy and metals accelerated in winds/outflows transferred and deposited into the circumgalactic medium? X-ray observations are a unique way to address these questions because they probe the phase of the outflows which carries most of the kinetic energy. We show how a high throughput, high spectral resolution instrument like the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on Athena+ will allow us to address these questions by determining the physical parameters (ionization state, density, temperature, abundances, velocities, geometry, etc.) of the outflows on a dynamical time-scale, in a broad sample of nearby bright AGN. We present the discovery of a reflection-dominated active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the early-type radio-quiet galaxy ESO 565--G019 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT. The source X-ray spectrum below 10 keV is characteristic of other Compton-thick (CT) AGN, clearly showing an inverted continuum and prodigious fluorescence iron emission above ~3 keV. A Compton shoulder to the neutral Fe Kalpha line also appears to be present. There is evidence for long-term hard X-ray flux variability which we associate with changes in the intrinsic AGN power-law. The increasing sensitivity of ongoing and new hard X-ray surveys means that more such reflection-dominated AGN ought to be uncovered in the near future. ESO 565--G019 is hosted in an early-type galaxy whose morphology has been variously classified as either type E or type S0. Only about 20 bona fide CT-AGN have been identified in the local universe so far, and all exist in host galaxies with late Hubble types (S0 or later). CT columns of nuclear obscuring gas are uncommon in early-type galaxies in the local universe, so confirmation of the exact morphological class of ESO 565--G019 is important. Infrared photometry also shows the presence of large quantities of cool dust in the host, indicative of significant ongoing star-formation. ESO 565--G019 may be the first identified local example of minor-merger driven CT-AGN growth in an early-type host, or may be the result of interaction with its neighboring galaxy ESO 565--G018 in a wide pair., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present observations of a transient He-like Fe K alpha absorption line in Suzaku observations of the black hole binary Cygnus X-1 on 2011 October 5 near superior conjunction during the high/soft state, which enable us to map the full evolution from the start and the end of the episodic accretion phenomena or dips for the first time. We model the X-ray spectra during the event and trace their evolution. The absorption line is rather weak in the first half of the observation, but instantly deepens for ~10 ks, and weakens thereafter. The overall change in equivalent width is a factor of ~3, peaking at an orbital phase of ~0.08. This is evidence that the companion stellar wind feeding the black hole is clumpy. By analyzing the line with a Voigt profile, it is found to be consistent with a slightly redshifted Fe XXV transition, or possibly a mixture of several species less ionized than Fe XXV. The data may be explained by a clump located at a distance of ~10^(10-12) cm with a density of ~10^((-13)-(-11)) g cm^-3, which accretes onto and/or transits the line-of-sight to the black hole, causing an instant decrease in the observed degree of the ionization and/or an increase in density of the accreting matter. Continued monitoring for individual events with future X-ray calorimeter missions such as ASTRO-H and AXSIO will allow us to map out the accretion environment in detail and how it changes between the various accretion states., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, ApJL accepted on February 28, 2013

We extract the spectra of the fastest variability (above 10 Hz) from the black hole XTE J1550-564 during a transition from hard to soft state on the rise to outburst. We confirm previous results that the rapid variability contains no significant disc component despite this being strongly present in the total spectrum of the softer observations. We model ionised reflection significantly better than previous work, and show that this is also suppressed in the rapid variability spectrum compared to the total emission. This is consistent with the fast variability having its origin in a hot inner flow close to the black hole rather than in the accretion disc or in a corona above it. However, the rapid variability spectrum is not simply the same as the total Comptonised emission. It is always significantly harder, by an amount which increases as the spectrum softens during the outburst. This adds to evidence from time lags that the Comptonisation region is inhomogeneous, with harder spectra produced closest to the black hole, the same region which produces the fastest variability., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, to be published in MNRAS. In this paper we study the properties of the optical spectra of Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the unobscured hard X-ray emission as a diagnostic. We develop the `Correlation Spectrum Technique' (CST) and use this to show the strength of correlation between the hard X-ray luminosity and each wavelength of the optical spectrum. This shows that for Broad Line Seyfert 1s all the strong emission lines (broad component of H\alpha and H\beta, [NeIII] \lambda\lambda 3869/3967, [OI] \lambda\lambda 6300/6364, [OII] \lambda\lambda 3726/3729, [OIII] \lambda\lambda 4959/5007) and the optical underlying continuum all strongly correlate with the hard X-ray emission. But the NLS1s appear to be somewhat different. Among the various Balmer line components and the broadband SED components, the best correlation exists between the hard X-ray component and broad component (BC) of the Balmer lines, which supports the view that broad line region (BLR) has the closest link with the AGN's compact X-ray emission. The equivalent widths of Balmer line IC and BC are found to correlate with L$_{2-10keV}$, $\kappa_{2-10keV}^{-1} = L_{bol}/L_{2-10keV}$, Balmer line FWHM and black hole mass. There is a non-linear dependence of the Balmer line IC and BC luminosities with L$_{2-10keV}$ and L$_{5100}$, which suggests that a second-order factor such as the ILR and BLR covering factors affect the Balmer line component luminosities. The Balmer decrement is found to decrease from ~5 in the line core to ~2 in the extended wings, with mean decrements of 2.1 in BLR and 4.8 in ILR. This suggests different physical conditions in these regions. The [OIII] line is composed of a narrow core together with a blue-shifted component with average outflow velocity of $130^{+230}_{-80} km s^{-1}$. We present modeling and interpretation of the continuum and emission lines for a sample of 51 unobscured Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN). All of these AGNs have high quality spectra from both XMM-Newton and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We extend the wavelength coverage where possible by adding simultaneous UV data from the OM onboard XMM-Newton. Our sample is selected based on low reddening in the optical and low gas columns implied by their X-ray spectra. They also lack clear signatures for the presence of a warm absorber. Therefore the observed characteristics of this sample are likely to be directly related to the intrinsic properties of the central engine. We perform multi-component spectral fitting for strong optical emission lines and the whole optical spectra. We fit the combined optical, UV and X-ray data by applying a new broadband SED model which comprises the accretion disc emission, low temperature optically thick Comptonisation and a hard X-ray tail by introducing the a corona radius (Done et al. 2011). We find that in order to fit the data, the model often requires an additional long wavelength optical continuum component, whose origin is discussed in this paper. We also find that the Photo-recombination edge of Balmer continuum shifts and broadens beyond the standard limit of 3646{\AA}, implying an electron number density which is far higher than that in the broad line region clouds. Our results indicate that the Narrow Line Seyfert 1s in this sample tend to have lower black hole masses, higher Eddington ratios, softer 2-10 keV band spectra, lower 2-10 keV luminosities and higher \alpha_{ox}, compared with typical broad line Seyfert 1s (BLS1), although their bolometric luminosities are similar. We present results on spectral variability of two Galactic black hole X-ray binaries, GRO J1655-40 and GX 339-4, in the hard state. We confirm a transition in behaviour of the photon index with luminosity, such that the well known decrease in X-ray photon index with decreasing luminosity only continues down to L_bol ~ 0.01 L_Edd . Below this point the photon index increases again. For Comptonisation models, this implies that the ratio of the Compton luminosity to seed photon luminosity, lh/ls, changes with bolometric luminosity, consistent with a scenario where seed photons change from cyclo-synchrotron at the lowest luminosities to those from a truncated disc. Alternatively, the transition could mark the point below which the non-thermal jet starts to dominate, or where reprocessed photons replace the viscous ones in an outflowing corona model., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS, in press
