Abstract

The impact of deformations on wearable antenna performance has been analyzed both experimentally and computationally. The reported results have been inconsistent and often contradictory. This article highlights how the choice of computational mesh, namely, cubic and curvilinear cylindrical mesh, applied to the problem of a cylindrically bent antenna can affect the results and subsequent conclusions. Deploying both meshes within the same time-domain numerical algorithm means that the differences in results can only be attributable to the discretization method used. Finally, a cylindrical mesh is used to further characterize the impact of bending on antenna resonant frequency, bandwidth, and radiation pattern. Bending in both E- and H-plane is considered.

Abstract

This paper introduces a design of a frequency adjustable dual-band circular patch antenna with a gapring-slot accompanied by a study of a cylindrical TLM method effectiveness and capabilities. The antenna is fabricated on Rogers 4003 substrate and measured results have been used to validate the used approach. Through comparison with corresponding rectangular TLM mesh results, the cylindrical TLM method has been found not only as more efficient requesting much smaller number of cells to be applied but also more capable to accurately describe narrow ring slots and small angular features. The designed antenna resonates at two frequencies, 2.77 GHz and 3.72 GHz, with the possibility of additional frequency tuning. A frequency adjustments study has been carried out and, accordingly, design corrections have been proposed either to independently tune the frequency or to simultaneously adjust both frequencies. Abstract

In this paper, a novel design of a patch antenna with two symmetrical slits and two closely spaced resonances is proposed. A novel patch antenna demonstrates a great flexibility in impedances adjustment at both resonances that are of a great importance in the design of series-fed antenna arrays with a large number of radiating elements. Printed antenna with two linear arrays consisting of 16 serially fed patches is designed and fabricated. Measured results agree very well with simulations. The antenna operation frequency range is 15.6–17.3 GHz that is 10.3% of a relative bandwidth. The measured antenna gain is 19.5 dBi with a small variation of 1.2 dB within the whole operating bandwidth, sidelobe levels are below −22 dB in the H-plane and −11.5 dB in the E-plane. The half-power beamwidth is less than 8° and 40°, in H- and E-planes, respectively. The antenna array exhibits the enhanced impedance and radiation bandwidth in comparison with similar antenna structures and is very suitable for various radar applications, notably for compact, low-cost frequency-modulated continuous wave systems.
