En la laguna de Chingaza (3265 m alt. Cordillera Oriental Colombiana), se realizaron muestreos de fitoplancton, mediciones de temperatura, oxígeno y parámetros físicos y químicos. La comunidad de fitoplancton comprende principalmente Desmidiaceae, Bacillariophyceae, y Cyanophyceae: La Desmidiacea Closterium sp. es la dominante durante la mayor parte del muestreo, pero en octubre (1989) la Cianofícea Oscillatoria sp. es la más significativa. En esta misma época la laguna presenta estratificación térmica y deficiencia de nitrógeno en sus aguas. Debido a los bajos valores en la relación nitrógeno/fósforo, conductividad, sólidos disueltos, acidez y ciertos organismos indicadores la laguna de chingaza es oligotrófica. At the Chingaza pond (3.265 m alt., located on the eastern Colombian cordillera), samples and measurements of temperature, oxygen, and physical-chemical parameters were taken. Phytoplankton community mainly consisted of Desmidiaceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Cyanophceae. Desmidiaceae species dominated in most samples, but in october (1989) Oscillatoria sp. (Cyanophyceae) was the most abundant species. During the latter period the laguna exhibited strong thermal stratification and its inorganic nitrogen content was extremely low. It is believed that this is a good example of an oligotrophic pond given the presence of certain bioindicators, the low nitrogen/phosphorus ratio, conductivity, and quantity of suspended solids.

This article explores the use of smartphone and wearable activity monitoring as a marker for recovery after skull base surgery. The study included 19 patients who underwent anterior or lateral skull base surgery at NYU Langone Health. The results showed that patients achieved a 75% return to preoperative mobility by the sixth week, although the rates varied depending on the type of surgery. Additionally, the study found that the weekly step count after surgery was significantly correlated with the length of hospital stay. The findings suggest that passive smartphone and wearable activity monitoring could be a reliable metric for assessing outcomes in skull base surgery. [Extracted from the article]

Phase-modulation fluorescence lifetime measurements were used to study the single Trp residue of the Ca(2+)-binding protein S-100a both in the absence and in the presence of Ca2+ and/or Mg2+. Trp fluorescence decay for the protein was satisfactorily described by Lorentzian lifetime distributions centered around two components (approximately 4 ns and 0.5 ns). Lifetime values were unchanged by 2 mM Ca2+, but the fractional intensity associated with longer lifetime increased up to 75%. In the presence of Mg2+, the Ca2+ induced increase of the fractional intensity associated with longer lifetime was only 57%. For the protein in buffer, about the 85% of the recovered anisotropy was associated to a rotational correlation time of 6.7 ns. After the addition of Ca2+, this value was increased to 16.08 ns. In the presence of Mg2+, Ca+2 increased the rotational correlation time to 33.75 ns. Similar studies were performed with S-100a interacting with egg phosphatidylcholine vesicles (SUV). Our data suggest that the conformation of the protein may be influenced by structural features of the lipidic membrane. Moreover, data obtained in the presence of Mg2+ indicate some interaction between lipids and S-100, likely mediated by this ion.

Objective Diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks is sometimes challenging in the postoperative period following pituitary and ventral skull base surgery. Intrathecal fluorescein (ITF) may be useful in this setting. Design Retrospective chart review. Setting Tertiary care center. Methods and Participants All patients who underwent pituitary and ventral skull base surgery performed by a single rhinologist between January 2017 and March 2020 were included. There were 103 patients identified. Eighteen patients received 20 ITF injections due to clinical suspicion for CSF leak during the postoperative period without florid CSF rhinorrhea on clinical exam. Computed tomography scans with new or increasing intracranial air and intraoperative findings were used to confirm CSF leaks. Clinical courses were reviewed for at least 6 months after initial concern for leak as the final determinate of CSF leak. Main Outcome Measures Specificity and safety of ITF. Results Eleven (61%) ITF patients were female and 7 (39%) were male. Average patient age was 52.50 ± 11.89. There were six patients with confirmed postoperative CSF leaks, 3 of whom had evaluations with ITF. ITF use resulted in 2 true positives, 1 false negative, 17 true negatives, and 0 false positives. ITF sensitivity was 67%, specificity was 100%, and positive and negative predictive values were 100 and 94.4%, respectively. There were no adverse effects from ITF use. Conclusions Existing modalities for detecting postoperative CSF leaks suffer from suboptimal sensitivity and specificity, delayed result reporting, or limited availability.
