Experiments in reflective reading and writing are discussed. During a two-day meeting, workers were asked to write down reflections on the things that 'struck' them during the first day's conversation. They were subsequently asked to share their writing by reading aloud. This activity helped generate a sense of connection. It is concluded that these experiments can stimulate organizational learning.

The question of whose voice gets heard in meetings and conversations is central to the practice of organisation development (OD). By tracing the difficulties I had in my earlier life in finding the courage to speak in groups - including the cultural influences that may have held me back - I show how I eventually "found my voice" and also reached a deeper understanding of how power relations work. Meanwhile, I have continued to develop what I call a "conversational practice", one that involves noticing the quality of conversations and making moves that might unsettle unhelpful patterns and make the interaction more lively or satisfying. Rather than offering a new recipe for OD practice, I offer my story in the hope that it stimulates others to reflect on their own lives in relation to mine, and maybe even to reconsider some of their habitual practices. The facilitation approach described here, though developed in artistic contexts, can easily be adapted to tackle serious organisational issues like team relationships, collaborative working and strategic planning. In a nutshell, it involves combining movement, material and words to create an emotionally safe, trusting landscape that is conducive to honest, brave exchange. Our reflections are based on two particular events, separated by a couple of years, in two different oriental locations. We begin by describing a visit to Taiwan, where we worked with a group of older people to prepare them rapidly for a live collaborative performance featuring ice and ribbon. The other (earlier) event took place in Cambodia and, though it was based on similar principles, the context was quite different: a group of staff from all levels of an NGO managed to develop a draft strategic plan by writing on fruit and teapots. While reading a short story by Camus--'The Guest'--I was struck by three themes regarding trust in human relationships: acknowledging people as people; feeling under pressure to implement unwelcome orders; and vulnerability. When I compared 'The Guest' with some 'true' stories collected for a project on 'trust' funded by Roffey Park Institute, I found some strong echoes of these themes. This confirmed to me that stories, both fictional and true, can do something that analytical frameworks on their own cannot, namely deepen our understanding of the dilemmas of human relating.
