1. Thermal and baryon density modifications to the $\sigma$-boson propagator: A road to describe the transfer of vorticity to spin in a nuclear environment in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

In the context of the description of how the vortical motion, produced in peripheral heavy-ion collisions, is transferred to the spin of hadrons, we compute the $\sigma$-meson propagator at finite temperature and baryon density. This propagator encodes the properties of a medium consisting mainly of nucleons{, and can be used to model the main interactions between hadrons} in the corona region of the reaction. We compute the one-loop $\sigma$ self-energy in an approximation that accounts for the large nucleon mass. From the real part of the self-energy, we find the dispersion relation and show that the $\sigma$-mass receives a non-negligible thermal and baryon chemical dependent {contribution}. From the imaginary part, we also compute the spectral density, which we show to contain a piece coming from the branch cut associated with Landau damping. We also present approximations for the dispersion relation and the residue at the pole in the small- and large-momentum regimes and complement the calculation, providing the sum rules satisfied by the propagator. Abstract

We present the design of the mechanical structure of the mini Beam-Beam detector, a subsystem of the Multi-Purpose Detector, soon to enter into operation at the Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The miniBeBe detector was designed and is currently being developed by the Mexican team of the NICA Collaboration to contribute to the level-zero trigger of the Time of Flight Detector. The mechanical structure meets the requirements of minimizing the material budget and be free of ferromagnetic materials, without compromising its robustness. The design also allows for easy module replacement for maintenance and overall removal at the end of the first stage of the experiment, without affecting the rest of the subsystems, to leave room for the installation of the Inner Tracking System. In addition, a Finite Element Method analysis of the mechanical components under load was performed. Based on this analysis, it was determined that the design meets the space constraints within the Multi-Purpose Detector, as well as a deformation of less than 1 mm with overall stress of less than 2 MPa, such that no material used in the design is at risk of mechanical failure during operation. The heat transfer analysis of the cooling system revealed that the temperature of the cooling plate is maintained within a range of $19.00^{\circ}$C to $21.41^{\circ}$C, which is sufficient to ensure that the silicon photomultipliers operate below a temperature of 25.00$^{\circ}$C, thereby optimizing their functionality, Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, 7 tables

3. Collision energy dependence of source sizes for primary and secondary pions at NICA energies

Abstract

We study the evolution of the two-pion correlation function parameters with collision energy in the context of relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the NICA energy range. To this end, we perform UrQMD simulations in the cascade mode to produce samples of pions from $5\times 10^6$ Bi+Bi collisions for each of the studied energies. The effects of the quantum-statistical correlations are introduced using the correlation afterburner code CRAB. We fit the correlation function using Gaussian, exponential and symmetric L\'evy shapes and show that for all collision energies the latter provides the best fit. We separate the sample into pions coming from primary processes and pions originating from the decay of long-lived resonances, and show that the source size for the latter is significantly larger than for the former. The source size for the secondaries, is similar but in general larger than the size for the whole pion sample. To further characterize the pion source, we also simulate the effects of a non-ideal detector introducing a momentum smearing parameter, representing the minimum pair momentum and thus a maximum source size that can be resolved. The values of the correlation function intercept parameter are therefore modified from the values they attain for the perfect detector case. Using the core-halo picture of the source, we show that the values of the intercept parameter are influenced by the presence of a significant fraction of core pions coming from the decay of long-lived but slow-moving resonances. These findings serve as a benchmark to compare with future Monte Carlo studies that consider an Equation of State and thus allow for a phase transition within the studied energy domain., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. 4. Core-corona approach to describe hyperon global polarization in semi-central relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

We report on the core-corona model developed to describe the main features of hyperon global polarization in semicentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions as a function of the collision energy. We first neglect the contribution to polarization from hyperons produced in the corona. In this scenario, the global polarization turns out to be described by a delicate balance between the vorticity-to-spin transferring reactions in the core and the predominance of corona over core matter at low energies. We show how this last feature provides a key ingredient missing in our original model that helps to better describe the excitation function for $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ global polarization. To improve the description, we then introduce the contribution to the global polarization coming from the transverse polarization of $\Lambda$s produced in the corona, which is hereby assumed to be similar to the well-known polarization produced in p + p reactions. Abstract

Abstract

We compute the $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ global polarizations in semi-central heavy-ion collisions using the core-corona model where the source of $\Lambda$'s and $\overline{\Lambda}$'s is taken as consisting of a high-density core and a less dense corona. Abstract

An important observable to understand the properties of the matter produced in heavy-ion collisions is its strangeness content. Recent experimental results show that in semi-central collisions, the $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ global polarization show differences that increase at low energies. This behaviour has been described using a model where these particles may be produced from two distinct density zones in the collision region: the core and the corona where QGP processes and p + p like reactions, respectively, are mainly at work. Using this idea, the polarization can be influenced by the relative abundance of these particles coming from either regions. Abstract

PhD-trained scientists are essential contributors to the workforce in diverse employment sectors that include academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations. Hence, best practices for training the future biomedical workforce are of national concern. Complementing coursework and laboratory research training, many institutions now offer professional training that enables career exploration and develops a broad set of skills critical to various career paths. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded academic institutions to design innovative programming to enable this professional development through a mechanism known as Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST). Programming at the NIH BEST awardee institutions included career panels, skill-building workshops, job search workshops, site visits, and internships. Because doctoral training is lengthy and requires focused attention on dissertation research, an initial concern was that students participating in additional complementary training activities might exhibit an increased time to degree or diminished research productivity. Metrics were analyzed from 10 NIH BEST awardee institutions to address this concern, using time to degree and publication records as measures of efficiency and productivity. Comparing doctoral students who participated to those who did not, results revealed that across these diverse academic institutions, there were no differences in time to degree or manuscript output. Our findings support the policy that doctoral students should participate in career and professional development opportunities that are intended to prepare them for a variety of diverse and important careers in the workforce.

Abstract

We compute the Lambda and anti-Lambda global polarization in semi-central heavy-ion collisions modeling the source as consisting of a high-density core and a less dense corona. We show that when more Lambdas than anti-Lambdas are produced in the corona, and this is combined with a smaller number of Lambdas coming from the core, as compared to those coming from the corona, an amplification effect for the anti-Lambda with respect to that of Lambda polarization can occur. Abstract

We present results for time resolution studies performed on three different scintillating plastics and two silicon photo-multipliers. These studies are intended to determine whether scintillating plastic/silicon photo-multiplier systems can be employed to provide a fast trigger signal for NICA's Multi Purpose Detector (MPD). Our results show that such a system made of cells with transverse dimensions of order of a few cm, coupled to silicon photo-multipliers, provides a time resolution of about 50 ps, which can be even further improved to attain the MPD trigger requirements of 20 ps.

Abstract

The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) is to be installed at the Nuclotron Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). Its main goal is to study the phase diagram of the strongly interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collisions. These studies, while providing insight into the physics of heavy-ion collisions, are relevant for improving our understanding of the evolution of the early Universe and the formation of neutron stars. In order to extend the MPD trigger capabilities, we propose to include a high granularity beam-beam monitoring detector (BE-BE) to provide a level-0 trigger signal with an expected time resolution of 30 ps. This new detector will improve the determination of the reaction plane by the MPD experiment, a key measurement for flow studies that provides physics insight into the early stages of the reaction. In this work, we use simulated Au+Au collisions at NICA energies to show the potential of such a detector to determine the event plane resolution, providing further redundancy to the detectors originally considered for this purpose namely, the Fast Forward Detector (FFD) and the Hadron Calorimeter (HCAL). Abstract

We use linear viscous hydrodynamics to describe the energy and momentum deposited by a fast moving parton in a quark gluon plasma. This energy-momentum is in turn used to compute the probability density for the production of soft partons by means of the Cooper-Frye formula. We use this probability density to render manifest a relation between the average transverse momentum given to the fast moving parton from the medium $\hat{q}$, the entropy density to shear viscosity ratio $\eta/s$ and the energy lost by the fast moving parton $\Delta E$ in an expanding medium under similar conditions to those generated in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. We find that $\hat{q}$ increases linearly with $\Delta E$ for both trigger and away side partons that have been produced throughout the medium. On the other hand, $\eta/s$ is more stable with $\Delta E$. We also study how these transport coefficients vary with the geometrical location of the hard scattering that produces the fast moving partons. The behavior of $\hat{q}$, with $\Delta E$ is understood as arising from the length of medium the parton traverses from the point where it is produced. However, since $\eta/s$ is proportional to the ratio of the length of medium traversed by the fast parton and the average number of scatterings it experiences, it has a milder dependence on the energy it loses. This study represents a tool to obtain a direct connection between transport coefficients and the description of in-medium energy loss within a linear viscous hydrodynamical evolution of the bulk., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

19. Jet asymmetry and momentum imbalance from $2 \to 2$ and $2 \to 3$ partonic processes in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

We study momentum imbalance as a function of jet asymmetry in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. To implement parton production during the collision, we include all Leading Order (LO) $2\to 2$ and $2\to 3$ parton processes in pQCD. The produced partons lose energy within the quark gluon plasma and hadronize collinearly when they leave it. The energy and momentum deposited into the plasma is described using linear viscous hydrodynamics with a constant energy loss per unit length and a total energy loss given by a Gaussian probability centered around a mean value $\bar{\mathcal{E}}$ and a half-width $\Delta{\mathcal{E}}$. We argue that the shape of the asymmetry observed by the CERN-CMS Collaboration can indeed be attributed to parton energy loss in the medium and that a good description of data is achieved when one includes a slight enhancement coming from the contribution of $2\to 3$ parton processes that modifies the asymmetry distribution of the dijet events. We compare our results to CMS data for the most central collisions and study different values for $\bar{\mathcal{E}}$ and $\Delta{\mathcal{E}}$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

We study the energy-momentum deposited by fast moving partons within a medium using linearized viscous hydrodynamics. The particle distribution produced by this energy-momentum is computed using the Cooper-Frye formalism. We show that for the conditions arising in heavy-ion collisions, energy momentum is preferentially deposited along the head shock of the fast moving partons. We also show that the double hump in the away-side of azimuthal correlations can be produced by two (instead of one) away-side partons that deposit their energy-momentum along their directions of motion. These partons are originated in the in-medium hard scattering in 2 to 3 processes. We compare the results of the analysis to azimuthal angular correlations from PHENIX and show that the calculation reproduces the data systematics of a decreasing away-side correlation when the momentum of the associated hadron becomes closer to the momentum of the leading hadron. This scenario seems to avoid the shortcomings of the Mach cone as the origin of the double-hump structure in the away-side

We use a Monte Carlo approach to study hadron azimuthal angular correlations in high energy proton-proton and central nucleus-nucleus collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies at mid-rapidity. We build a hadron event generator that incorporates the production of $2\to 2$ and $2\to 3$ parton processes and their evolution into hadron states. For nucleus-nucleus collisions we include the effect of parton energy loss in the Quark-Gluon Plasma using a modified fragmentation function approach. In the presence of the medium, for the case when three partons are produced in the hard scattering, we analyze the Monte Carlo sample in parton and hadron momentum bins to reconstruct the angular correlations. We characterize this sample by the number of partons that are able to hadronize by fragmentation within the selected bins. In the nuclear environment the model allows hadronization by fragmentation only for partons with momentum above a threshold $p_T^{{\tiny{thresh}}}=2.4$ GeV. We argue that one should treat properly the effect of those partons with momentum below the threshold, since their interaction with the medium may lead to showers of low momentum hadrons along the direction of motion of the original partons as the medium becomes diluted.

Abstract

The experimental results on transverse momentum azimuthal hadron correlations at RHIC have opened a rich field for parton energy loss analysis in heavy-ion collisions. Recently, a considerable amount of work has beendevoted to study the shapes of the ``away-side'' jet which exhibit an interesting and unexpected ``double hump'' structure not observed in the analogous treatment of $pp$ data. Driven by the possibility that the latter result might just mean that such structure exists already in the case of $pp$ collisions, but that its relative intensity could be small, here we use the Event Shape Analysis to show that it is possible to identify and select well defined event topologies in $pp$ collisions, among which, a double hump structure for the away-side jet emerges. Using two shape parameters, the sphericity in the transverse plane and the recoil to analyze a sample of PYTHIA generated $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, we show that this structure corresponds to two jets emitted in the backward hemisphere. Finally, we show that Q-PYTHIA qualitatively reproduces the decrease in the yield of dijet events and the increase of the double hump structure in the away side observed in heavy ion collisions. 37. Transport coefficients from energy loss studies in an expanding QGP

Abstract

We use linear viscous hydrodynamics to describe the energy and momentum deposited by a fast moving parton in a quark gluon plasma. This energy-momentum is used to compute the probability density for the production of soft partons by means of the Cooper-Frye formula. Using this probability density, we render manifest a relation between the average transverse momentum given to the fast moving parton from the medium, q̂, the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, η/s, and the energy lost by the fast moving parton, ΔE, in an expanding medium under similar conditions to those generated in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC and RHIC energies. We find that q̂increases with ΔE. On the other hand, η/sis more stable with ΔE. The behavior of q̂, with ΔEis understood as arising from the length of medium the parton traverses from the point where it is produced. However, since η/sis proportional to the ratio of the length of medium traversed by the fast parton and the average number of scatterings it experiences, it has a milder dependence on the energy it loses. This study represents a tool to obtain a direct connection between transport coefficients and the description of in-medium energy loss within a linear viscous hydrodynamical evolution of the bulk.

38. Cell cycle-dependent chromatin shuttling of HBO1–JADE1 histone acetyl transferase (HAT) complex

Abstract

HAT HBO1 interacts with 2 isoforms of JADE1: JADE1S and JADE1L. JADE1 promotes acetylation of nucleosomal histones by HBO1. HBO1–JADE1 complex facilitates cell proliferation by unclear mechanisms. Here we report intracellular chromatin shuttling of HBO1–JADE1 complex during mitosis coupled to phosphorylation of JADE1. In interphase of dividing cells JADE1S was localized to the nucleus and associated with chromatin. As cells approached mitosis, specifically prophase, JADE1S dissociated from chromatin and associated with cytoplasm. JADE1S chromatin re-association began in telophase and paralleled nuclear envelope membrane reassembly. By early G1, JADE1S was re-associated with chromatin and localized to the nucleus. Importantly, cytoplasmic but not chromatin-associated JADE1 protein was phosphorylated. Mass-Spectrometric analysis of JADE1S protein isolated from G2/M-arrested cells identified 6 phosphorylated amino acid residues: S89, T92, S102, S121, S392, and T468, including 3 novel sites. Temporally, JADE1S phosphorylation and dephosphorylation during mitosis correlated with JADE1S chromatin dissociation and recruitment. JADE1S chromatin recruitment was accompanied by the global histone H4 acetylation. Pharmacological inhibitor of Aurora A kinase prevented JADE1S protein band shift and chromatin dissociation, suggesting regulatory function for phosphorylation. In vivo experiments supported our in vitro results. In mouse kidneys, JADE1S transiently accumulated in the cytoplasm of tubular epithelial cells during kidney regeneration. The transient increase in the number of cells with cytoplasmic JADE1S directly correlated with activation of tubular cell proliferation and inversely correlated with the number of cells with nuclear JADE1S staining, supporting biological role of HBO1–JADE1 shuttling during organ regeneration.

Abstract

Embryonic development requires cell movements whose coordination is robust and reproducible. A dramatic example is the primary body axis of vertebrates: despite perturbation, cells in prospective axial tissue coordinate their movements to make an elongated body axis. The spatial cues coordinating these movements are not known. We show here that cells deprived of preexisting spatial cues by physical dissociation and reaggregation nonetheless organize themselves into an axis. Activin‐induced cells that are reaggregated into a flat disc initially round up into a ball before elongating perpendicular to the disc. Manipulations of the geometry of the disc and immunofluorescence micrography reveal that the edge of the disc provides a circumferential alignment zone. This finding indicates that physical boundaries provide alignment cues and that circumferential “hoop stress” drives the axial extrusion in a manner resembling late‐involuting mesoderm of Xenopus and archenteron elongation in other deuterostome species such as sea urchins. Thus, a population of cells finds its own midline based on the form of the population's boundaries using an edge‐aligning mechanism. This process provides a remarkably simple organizing principle that contributes to the reliability of embryonic development as a whole. 41. Dorsal downregulation of GSK3β by a non-Wnt-like mechanism is an early molecular consequence of cortical rotation in early Xenopus embryos

Abstract

Cortical rotation and concomitant dorsal translocation of cytoplasmic determinants are the earliest events known to be necessary for dorsoventral patterning in Xenopus embryos. The earliest known molecular target is β-catenin, which is essential for dorsal development and becomes dorsally enriched shortly after cortical rotation. In mammalian cells cytoplasmic accumulation of β-catenin follows reduction of the specific activity of glycogen synthase kinase 3-beta (GSK3β). In Xenopus embryos, exogenous GSK3β suppresses dorsal development as predicted and GSK3β dominant negative (kinase dead) mutants cause ectopic axis formation. However, endogenous GSK3β regulation is poorly characterized. Here we demonstrate two modes of GSK3β regulation in Xenopus. Endogenous mechanisms cause depletion of GSK3β protein on the dorsal side of the embryo. The timing, location and magnitude of the depletion correspond to those of endogenous β-catenin accumulation. UV and D2O treatments that abolish and enhance dorsal character of the embryo, respectively, correspondingly abolish and enhance GSK3β depletion? A candidate regulator of GSK3β, GSK3-binding protein (GBP), known to be essential for axis formation, also induces depletion of GSK3β. Depletion of GSK3β is a previously undescribed mode of regulation of this signal transducer. The other mode of regulation is observed in response to Wnt and dishevelled expression. Neither Wnt nor dishevelled causes depletion but instead they reduce GSK3β-specific activity? Thus, Wnt/Dsh and GBP appear to effect two biochemically distinct modes of GSK3β regulation.

Abstract

When assessing the fragility that characterizes the health of an immigrant person, a culturally competent transformation of the nurse-patient teaching-learning process is necessary. Therefore, it is considered essential to incorporate cultural competence and intercultural communication in higher nursing education., Objective: To determine the content and knowledge of cultural competence and intercultural communication offered in higher education in nursing courses., Design: The Campinha-Bacote model of cultural competence was used as the primary reference., Method: A scoping review was conducted about studies published in the period 2003 and 2020. The research was conducted between May and October 2020. More than a hundred documents (books, chapters, articles, conference proceedings) have been consulted., Results: Undergraduate nursing courses and postgraduate education move toward promoting cultural competence and sensitivity through teaching strategies., Conclusions: Teaching projects that combine multiple competencies are more effective, including teacher training. A predominant element is a need for continuous and transversal projects.
