Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are exotic, localized states even though their energy lies in the continuum spectra. Since its discovery in 1929, the quest to unveil these exotic states in charge transport experiments remains an active pursuit in condensed matter physics. Here, we study charge transport in InSb nanowire networks in the ballistic regime and subject to a perpendicular magnetic field as ideal candidates to observe and control the appearance of BICs. We find that BICs reveal themselves as distinctive resonances or antiresonances in the conductance by varying the applied magnetic field and the Fermi energy. We systematically consider different lead connections in hashtag-like nanowire networks, finding the optimal configuration that enhances the features associated with the emergence of BICs. Finally, the investigation focuses on the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction of InSb on the occurrence of BICs in nanowire networks. While the interaction generally plays a detrimental role in the signatures of the BICs in the conductance of the nanowire networks, it opens the possibility to operate these nanostructures as spin filters for spintronics. Weyl semimetals are prominent examples of topologically protected quantum matter. These materials are the three-dimensional counterparts of graphene and great efforts are being devoted to achieve a thorough understanding of their fundamental physics. In this work, we aim at contributing to this end by discussing the effect of a single magnetic impurity in Weyl semimetals as a first step towards considering a larger number of impurities. We find that resonances appear in the local density of states with a Friedel-like behaviour, oscillating as a function of distance. By studying the spin-resolved local density of states, we can observe non-trivial and anisotropic spin textures where the spin components perpendicular to the spin of the impurity wind around the latter, until the spin becomes completely parallel to the impurity right at the interface. Friedel oscillations also play a relevant role in the form of the spin textures, forming an oscillatory pattern. We believe our results can pave the way to further studies which consider the presence of a large number of random magnetic impurities.

We propose to Floquet-engineer Dirac cones at the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We show that a large tunability of the Fermi velocity can be achieved as a function of the polarization, direction and amplitude of the driving field. Using this external control, the Dirac cones in the quasienergy spectrum may become elliptic or massive, in accordance to experimental evidences. These results help us to understand the interplay of surface states and external ac driving fields in topological insulators. In our work we use the full Hamiltonian for the three-dimensional system instead of effective surface Hamiltonians, which are usually considered in the literature. Our findings show that the Dirac cones in the quasienergy spectrum remain robust even in the presence of bulk states and, therefore, they validate the usage of effective surface Hamiltonians to explore the properties of Floquet-driven topological boundaries. Furthermore, our model allows us to introduce new out-of-plane field configurations, which cannot be accounted for by effective surface Hamiltonians.

We propose an efficient single-photon router comprising two resonator waveguide channels coupled by several sequential cavities with embedded three-level atoms. We show that the system can operate as a perfect four-way single-photon switch. We also demonstrate that an incident single-photon propagating in one of the waveguides can be routed into one or the other output channels; such routing can be controlled by the external classical electromagnetic field driving the atoms. We argue that, under appropriate conditions, the efficiency of such routing can be close to 100\% within a broad operational bandwidth, suggesting various applications in photonics., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Miniaturization of electronic devices aims at manufacturing ever smaller products, from mesoscopic to nanoscopic sizes. This trend is challenging because the increased levels of dissipated power demands a better understanding of heat transport in small volumes. A significant amount of the consumed energy is transformed into heat and dissipated to the environment. Thermoelectric materials offer the possibility to harness dissipated energy and make devices less energy-demanding. Heat-to-electricity conversion requires materials with a strongly suppressed thermal conductivity but still high electronic conduction. Nanowires can meet nicely these two requirements because enhanced phonon scattering at the surface and defects reduces the lattice thermal conductivity while electric conductivity is not deteriorated, leading to an overall remarkable thermoelectric efficiency. Therefore, nanowires are regarded as a promising route to achieving valuable thermoelectric materials at the nanoscale. In this paper, we present an overview of key experimental and theoretical results concerning the thermoelectric properties of nanowires. The focus of this review is put on the physical mechanisms by which the efficiency of nanowires can be improved. Phonon scattering at surfaces and interfaces, enhancement of the power factor by quantum effects and topological protection of electron states to prevent the degradation of electrical conductivity in nanowires are thoroughly discussed.

A topological boundary can be formed at the interface between a trivial and a topological insulator. The difference in the topological index across the junction leads to robust gapless surface states. Optical studies of these states are scarce in the literature, the reason being the difficulty to isolate their response from that of the bulk. In this work, we propose to deposit a $\delta$ layer of donor impurities in close proximity to a topological boundary to help detecting gapless surface states. As we will show, gapless surface states are robust against this perturbation and they enhance intraband optical transitions as measured by the oscillator strength. These results allow to understand the interplay of surface and bulk states in topological insulators.

Several IV-VI semiconductor compounds made of heavy atoms, such as Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te, may undergo band-inversion at the $L$ point of the Brillouin zone upon variation of their chemical composition. This inversion gives rise to topologically distinct phases, characterized by a change in a topological invariant. In the framework of the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theory, band-inversion can be viewed as a change of sign of the fundamental gap. A two-band model within the envelope-function approximation predicts the appearance of midgap interface states with Dirac cone dispersions in band-inverted junctions, namely, when the gap changes sign along the growth direction. We present a thorough study of these interface electron states in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields, the electric field being applied along the growth direction of a band-inverted junction. We show that the Dirac cone is robust and persists even if the fields are strong. In addition, we point out that Landau levels of electron states lying in the semiconductor bands can be tailored by the electric field. Tunable devices are thus likely to be realizable exploiting the properties studied herein.

We study the quantization of Dirac fermions in lithographically defined graphene nanoconstrictions. We observe quantized conductance in single nanoconstrictions fabricated on top of a thin hexamethyldisilazane layer over a Si/SiO_2 wafer. This nanofabrication method allows us to obtain well defined edges in the nanoconstrictions, thus reducing the effects of edge roughness on the conductance. We prove the occurrence of ballistic transport and identify several size quantization plateaus in the conductance at low temperature. Experimental data and numerical simulations show good agreement, demonstrating that the smoothing of the plateaus is not related to edge roughness but to quantum interference effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in physica status solidi (a)

In this paper an effective integrable non-linear model describing the electron spin dynamics in a deformable helical molecule with weak spin-orbit coupling is presented. Non-linearity arises from the electron-lattice interaction and it enables the formation of a variety of stable solitons such as bright solitons, breathers and rogue waves, all of them presenting well defined spin projection onto the molecule axis. A thorough study of the soliton solutions is presented and discussed.

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is used to investigate the heat current due to the atomic lattice vibrations in graphene nanoribbons and nanorings under a thermal gradient. We consider a wide range of temperature, nanoribbon widths up to 6nm and the effect of moderate edge disorder. We find that narrow graphene nanorings can efficiently suppress the lattice thermal conductivity at low temperatures (~100K), as compared to nanoribbons of the same width. Remarkably, rough edges do not appear to have a large impact on lattice energy transport through graphene nanorings while nanoribbons seem more affected by imperfections. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the effects of hydrogen-saturated edges can be neglected in these graphene nanostructures.

It is widely admitted that the helical conformation of certain chiral molecules may induce a sizable spin selectivity observed in experiments. Spin selectivity arises as a result of the interplay between a helicity-induced spin-orbit coupling and electric dipole fields in the molecule. From the theoretical point of view, different phenomena might affect the spin dynamics in helical molecules, such as quantum dephasing, dissipation and the role of metallic contacts. Previous studies neglected the local deformation of the molecule about the carrier thus far, but this assumption seems unrealistic to describe charge transport in molecular systems. We introduce an effective model describing the electron spin dynamics in a deformable helical molecule with weak spin-orbit coupling. We find that the electron-lattice interaction allows the formation of stable solitons such as bright solitons with well defined spin projection onto the molecule axis. We present a thorough study of these bright solitons and analyze their possible impact on the spin dynamics in deformable helical molecules.

We find the exact Bloch oscillations in zigzag arrays of curved optical waveguides under the influence of arbitrary long-range coupling. The curvature induces a linear transverse potential gradient in the equations of the light evolution. In the case of arrays with second-order coupling, steady states can be obtained as linear combinations of Bessel functions of integer index. The corresponding eigenvalues are equally spaced and form the well-known Wannier-Stark ladder, the spacing being independent of the second-order coupling. We also solve exactly the wave packet dynamics and compare it with experimental results. Accordingly we find that a broad optical pulse performs Bloch oscillations. Frequency doubling of the fundamental Bloch frequency sets up at finite values of the second-order coupling. On the contrary when a single waveguide is initially excited, a breathing mode is activated with no signature of Bloch oscillations. We present a generalization of our results to waveguide arrays subject to long-range coupling. In IV-VI semiconductor heterojunctions with band-inversion, such as those made of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te or Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se, interface states are properly described by a two-band model, predicting the appearance of a Dirac cone in single junctions. However, in quantum wells the interface dispersion is quadratic in momentum and the energy spectrum presents a gap. We show that the interface gap shrinks under an electric field parallel to the growth direction. Therefore, the interface gap can be dynamically tuned in experiments on double-gated quantum wells based on band-inverted compounds.

We investigate the nonequilibrium transport properties of a silicene armchair nanoribbon with a random distribution of adsorbed atoms in apex positions. A ferromagnetic insulator grown below the nanoribbon splits spin-up and spin-down electron bands and gives rise to a spin polarization of the conductance. The conductance vanishes when the Fermi energy matches the adatom levels due to the coupling of adatom localized states with the continuum spectra of the nanoribbon. This is the well-known Fano effect, resulting in a spin-dependent antiresonance in the conductance. The different antiresonance energies of spin-up and spin-down electrons give rise to a full spin polarization of the conductance in a broad energy window. This spin-dependent Fano effect opens the possibility to using it in spintronics as a tuneable source of polarized electrons.

Topological phases of matter are often characterized by interface states, which were already known to occur at the boundary of a band-inverted junction in semiconductor heterostructures. In IV-VI compounds such interface states are properly described by a two-band model, predicting the appearance of a Dirac cone in single junctions. We study the quantum-confined Stark effect of interface states due to an electric field perpendicular to a band-inverted junction. We find a closed expression to obtain the interface dispersion relation at any field strength and show that the Dirac cone widens under an applied bias. Thus, the Fermi velocity can be substantially lowered even at moderate fields, paving the way for tunable band-engineered devices based on band-inverted junctions.

Dirac materials are characterized by energy-momentum relations that resemble those of relativistic massless particles. Commonly denominated Dirac cones, these dispersion relations are considered to be their essential feature. These materials comprise quite diverse examples, such as graphene and topological insulators. Band-engineering techniques should aim to a full control of the parameter that characterizes the Dirac cones: the Fermi velocity. We propose a general mechanism that enables the fine-tuning of the Fermi velocity in Dirac materials in a readily accessible way for experiments. By embedding the sample in a uniform electric field, the Fermi velocity is substantially modified. We first prove this result analytically, for the surface states of a topological insulator/semiconductor interface, and postulate its universality to other Dirac materials. Then we check its correctness in carbon-based Dirac materials, namely graphene nanoribbons and nanotubes, thus showing the validity of our hypothesis in both continuum and tight-binding calculations and in different Dirac systems.

We investigate the non-equilibrium transport properties of a disordered molecular nanowire. The nanowire is regarded as a quasi-one-dimensional organic crystal composed of self-assembled molecules. One orbital and a single random energy are assigned to each molecule while the intermolecular coupling does not fluctuate. Consequently, electronic states are expected to be spatially localized. We consider the regime of strong localization, namely, the localization length is smaller than the length of the molecular wire. Electron-vibron interaction, taking place in each single molecule, is also taken into account. We investigate the interplay between disorder and electron-vibron interaction in response to either an applied electric bias or a temperature gradient. To this end, we calculate the electric and heat currents when the nanowire is connected to leads, using the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. At intermediate temperature, scattering by disorder dominates both charge and heat transport. We find that the electron-vibron interaction enhances the effect of the disorder on the transport properties due to the exponential suppression of tunneling.

We investigate the nonequilibrium transport properties of a double quantum dot system connected in parallel to two leads, including intradot electron-electron interaction. In the absence of interactions the system supports a bound state in the continuum. This state is revealed as a Fano antiresonance in the transmission when the energy levels of the dots are detuned. Using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we find that the occurrence of the Fano antiresonance survives in the presence of Coulomb repulsion. We give precise predictions for the experimental detection of bound states in the continuum. First, we calculate the differential conductance as a function of the applied voltage and the dot level detuning and find that crossing points in the diamond structure are revealed as minima due to the transmission antiresonances. Second, we determine the thermoelectric current in response to an applied temperature bias. In the linear regime, quantum interference gives rise to sharp peaks in the thermoelectric conductance. Remarkably, we find interaction induced strong current nonlinearities for large thermal gradients that may lead to several nontrivial zeros in the thermocurrent. We study the thermoelectric properties of rectangular graphene rings connected symmetrically or asymmetrically to the leads. A side-gate voltage applied across the ring allows for the precise control of the electric current flowing through the system. The transmission coefficient of the rings manifests Breit-Wigner line-shapes and/or Fano line-shapes, depending on the connection configuration, the width of nanoribbons forming the ring and the side-gate voltage. We find that the thermopower and the figure of merit are greatly enhanced when the chemical potential is tuned close to resonances. Such enhancement is even more pronounced in the vicinity of Fano like anti-resonances which can be induced by a side-gate voltage independently of the geometry. We theoretically study the occurrence of Bloch oscillations in biased hybrid graphene systems with spin-dependent superlattices. The spin-dependent potential is realized by a set of ferromagnetic insulator strips deposited on top of a gapped graphene nanoribbon, which induce a proximity exchange splitting of the electronic states in the graphene monolayer. We numerically solve the Dirac equation and study Bloch oscillations in the lowest conduction band of the spin-dependent superlattice. While the Bloch frequency is the same for both spins, we find the Bloch amplitude to be spin dependent. We report on spin transport along double-helical molecular systems by considering various contact configurations and asymmetries between the two helical strands in the regime of completely coherent charge transport. Our results reveal that no spin polarization appears in two-terminal molecular devices when coupled to one-dimensional electrodes. The same holds in the case of finite-width electrodes if there is a \emph{bottleneck} of one single site in the system electrode--molecule--electrode. Then, additional dephasing is necessary to induce spin-filtering effects. In contrast, nonzero spin polarization is found in molecular devices with multiple terminals or with two finite-width electrodes, each of them connected to more than one site of the molecule. Then, the magnitude of spin polarization can be enhanced by increasing the asymmetry between the two strands. We point out that the spin-filtering effects could emerge in double-helical molecular devices at low temperature without dephasing by a proper choice of the electrode number and the connection between the molecule and the electrodes., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We show that electron states in disordered graphene, with an onsite potential that induces inter-valley scattering, are localised for all energies at disorder as small as 1/6 of the band width of clean graphene. We clarify that, in order for this Anderson-type localisation to be manifested, graphene flakes of size of approximately 200 x 200 nm^2 or larger are needed. For smaller samples, due to the surprisingly large extent of the electronic wave functions, a regime of apparently extended (or even critical) states is identified. Our results complement earlier studies of macroscopically large samples and can explain the divergence of results for finite-size graphene flakes.

Two-particle scattering in graphene is a multichannel problem, where the energies of the identical or opposite-helicity channels lie in disjoint energy segments. Due to the absence of Galilean invariance, these segments depend on the total momentum $Q$. The dispersion relations for the two opposite-helicity scattering channels are analogous to those of two one-dimensional tight-binding lattices with opposite dispersion relations, which are known to easily bind states at their edges. When an $s$-wave separable interaction potential is assumed, those bound states reveal themselves as three Feshbach resonances in the identical-helicity channel. We report the formation of bound states in the continuum driven by AC fields. This system consists of a quantum ring connected to two leads. An AC side-gate voltage controls the interference pattern of the electrons passing through the system. We model the system by two sites in parallel connected to two semi-infinite lattices. The energy of these sites change harmonically with time. We obtain the transmission probability and the local density of states at the ring sites as a function of the parameters that define the system. The transmission probability displays a Fano profile when the energy of the incoming electron matches the driving frequency. Correspondingly, the local density of states presents a narrow peak that approaches a Dirac delta function in the weak coupling limit. We find clear signatures of spin-dependent negative differential resistance in compound systems comprising a graphene nanoribbon and a set of ferromagnetic insulator strips deposited on top of it. The periodic array of ferromagnetic strips induces a proximity exchange splitting of the electronic states in graphene, resulting in the appearance of a superlattice with a spin-dependent energy spectrum. The electric current through the device can be highly polarized and both the current and its polarization manifest non-monotonic dependence on the bias voltage. Recently, polarons in the Peyrard-Bishop-Holstein model under DC electric fields were established to perform Bloch oscillations, provided the charge-lattice coupling is not large. In this work, we study this model when the charge is subjected to an applied field with both DC and AC components. Similarly to what happens in the rigid lattice, we find that the carrier undergoes a directed motion or coherent oscillations when the AC field is resonant or detuned with respect to the Bloch frequency, respectively. The electric density current and its Fourier spectrum are also studied to reveal the frequencies involved in the polaron dynamics.

We study theoretically the optical properties of an exciton in a two-dimensional ring threaded by a magnetic flux. We model the quantum ring by a confining potential that can be continuously tuned from strictly one-dimensional to truly two-dimensional with finite radius-to-width ratio. We present an analytic solution of the problem when the electron-hole interaction is short-ranged. The oscillatory dependence of the oscillator strength as a function of the magnetic flux is attributed to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The amplitude of the oscillations changes upon increasing the width of the quantum ring. We find that the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the ground state of the exciton decrease with increasing the width, but remarkably the amplitude remains finite down to radius-to-width ratios less than unity. We attribute this resilience of the excitonic oscillations to the non-simply connectedness of our chosen confinement potential., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We calculate numerically the localization length critical index within the Chalker-Coddington (CC) model for plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect. Lyapunov exponents have been calculated with relative errors on the order $10^{-3}$. Such high precision was obtained by considering the distribution of Lyapunov exponents for large ensembles of relatively short chains and calculating the ensemble average values. We analyze thoroughly finite size effects and find the localization length critical index $\nu= 2.517\pm 0.018$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates realize sensitive matter-wave interferometers. We investigate the dynamics and stability of bright-soliton wave packets in one-dimensional tilted optical lattices with a modulated mean-field interaction $g(t)$. By means of a time-reversal argument, we prove the stability of Bloch oscillations of breathing solitons that would be quasistatically unstable. Floquet theory shows that these breathing solitons can be more stable against certain experimental perturbations than rigid solitons or even non-interacting wave packets., Comment: final, published version

We present a theoretical analysis of the environment effects on charge transport in double-stranded synthetic poly(G)-poly(C) DNA molecules attached to two ideal leads. Coupling of the DNA to the environment results in two effects: (i) localization of carrier functions due to the static disorder and (ii) phonon-induced scattering of the carrier between these localized states, resulting in hopping conductivity. A nonlinear Pauli master equation for populations of localized states is used to describe the hopping transport and calculate the electric current as a function of the applied bias. We demonstrate that, although the electronic gap in the density of states shrinks as the disorder increases, the voltage gap in the $I-V$ characteristics becomes wider. We investigate Bloch oscillations of interacting cold atoms in a mean-field framework. In general, atom-atom interaction causes dephasing and destroys Bloch oscillations. Here, we show that Bloch oscillations are persistent if the interaction is modulated harmonically with suitable frequency and phase. For other modulations, Bloch oscillations are rapidly damped. We explain this behavior in terms of collective coordinates whose Hamiltonian dynamics permits to predict a whole family of stable solutions. In order to describe also the unstable cases, we carry out a stability analysis for Bogoliubov excitations. Using Floquet theory, we are able to predict the unstable modes as well as their growth rate, found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations., Comment: minor changes; published version

We study the dynamics of an electron wave-packet in a two-dimensional square lattice with an aperiodic site potential in the presence of an external uniform electric field. The aperiodicity is described by $\epsilon_{\bf m} = V\cos{(\pi\alpha m_x^{\nu_x})}\cos{(\pi\alpha m_y^{\nu_y})}$ at lattice sites $(m_x, m_y)$, with $\pi \alpha$ being a rational number, and $\nu_x$ and $\nu_y$ tunable parameters, controlling the aperiodicity. Using an exact diagonalization procedure and a finite-size scaling analysis, we show that in the weakly aperiodic regime ($\nu_x,\nu_y < 1$), a phase of extended states emerges in the center of the band at zero field giving support to a macroscopic conductivity in the thermodynamic limit. Turning on the field gives rise to Bloch oscillations of the electron wave-packet. The spectral density of these oscillations may display a double peak structure signaling the spatial anisotropy of the potential landscape. The intrinsic double helix conformation of the DNA strands is known to be the key ingredient of control of the electric current through the DNA by the perpendicular (gate) electric field. We show theoretically that Bloch oscillations in the DNA are also strongly affected by such lateral field; the oscillation frequency splits into a manifold of several generally non-commensurate frequencies leading to a complicated pattern of the charge motion. We consider the electronic transport through a Rashba quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads. We show that the interference of localized electron states with resonant electron states leads to the appearance of the Fano-Rashba effect. This effect occurs due to the interference of bound levels of spin-polarized electrons with the continuum of electronic states with an opposite spin polarization. We study numerically the intraband exciton relaxation in a one-dimensional lattice with scale-free disorder, in the presence of a linear bias. Exciton transport is considered as incoherent hoppings over the eigenstates of the static lattice. The site potential of the unbiased lattice is long-range-correlated with a power-law spectral density $S(k) \sim 1/k^{\alpha}$, $\alpha > 0$. The lattice supports a phase of extended states at the center of the band, provided $\alpha$ is larger than a critical value $\alpha_c$ [F. A. B. F. de Moura and M. L. Lyra, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{81}, 3735 (1998)]. When the bias is applied, the absorption spectrum displays clear signatures of the Wannier-Stark ladder [E. D\'{\i}az \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B\textbf{73}, 172410 (2006)]. We demonstrate that in unbiased lattices and in weakly correlated potentials the decay law is non-exponential. However, the decay is purely exponential when the bias increases and $\alpha$ is large. We relate this exponential decay to the occurrence of the Wannier-Stark ladder in the exciton band.

We study numerically the dynamics of a one-electron wave packet in a two-dimensional random lattice with long-range correlated diagonal disorder in the presence of a uniform electric field. The time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation is used for this purpose. We find that the wave packet displays Bloch-like oscillations associated with the appearance of a phase of delocalized states in the strong correlation regime. The amplitude of oscillations directly reflects the bandwidth of the phase and allows to measure it. A system of an array of side-coupled quantum-dots attached to a quantum wire is studied theoretically. Transport through the quantum wire is investigated by means of a noninteracting Anderson tunneling Hamiltonian. Analytical expressions of the transmission probability and phase are given. The transmission probability shows an energy spectrum with forbidden and allowed bands that depends on the up-down asymmetry of the system. In up-down symmetry only the gap survives, and in up-down asymmetry an allowed band is formed. We show that the allowed band arises by the indirect coupling between the up and down quantum dots. In addition, the band edges can be controlled by the degree of asymmetry of the quantum dots. Electronic transport properties of two quantum dots side-coupled to a quantum wire are studied by means of the two impurity Anderson Hamiltonian. The conductance is found to be a superposition of a Fano and a Breit-Wigner resonances as a function of the Fermi energy, when the gate voltages of the quantum dots are slightly different. Under this condition, we analyze the time evolution of a Gaussian-shaped superposition of plane waves incoming from the source lead, and found that the wave packet can be splitted into three packets at the drain lead. This spatial pattern manifests in a direct way the peculiarities of the conductance in energy space. We consider a ladder model of DNA for describing carrier transport in a fully coherent regime through finite segments. A single orbital is associated to each base, and both interstrand and intrastrand overlaps are considered within the nearest-neighbor approximation. Conduction through the sugar-phosphate backbone is neglected. We study analytically and numerically the spatial extend of the corresponding states by means of the Landauer and Lyapunov exponents. We study numerically the linear optical response of a quasiparticle moving on a one-dimensional disordered lattice in the presence of a linear bias. The random site potential is assumed to be long-range-correlated with a power-law spectral density $S(k) \sim 1/k^{\alpha}$, $\alpha > 0$. This type of correlations results in a phase of extended states at the band center, provided $\alpha$ is larger than a critical value $\alpha_c$ [F. A. B. F. de Moura and M. L. Lyra, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{81}, 3735 (1998)]. The width of the delocalized phase can be tested by applying an external electric field: Bloch-like oscillations of a quasiparticle wave packet are governed by the two mobility edges, playing now the role of band edges [F. Dom\'{\i}nguez-Adame \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{91}, 197402 (2003)]. We demonstrate that the frequency-domain counterpart of these oscillations, the so-called Wannier-Stark ladder, also arises in this system. When the phase of extended states emerges in the system, this ladder turns out to be a comb of doublets, for some range of disorder strength and bias. We report on an anomalous behavior of the absorption spectrum in a one-dimensional lattice with long-range-correlated diagonal disorder with a power-like spectrum in the form S(k) ~ 1/k^A. These type of correlations give rise to a phase of extended states at the band center, provided A is larger than a critical value A_c. We show that for A < A_c the absorption spectrum is single-peaked, while an additional peak arises when A > A_c, signalling the occurrence of the Anderson transition. The peak is located slightly below the low-energy mobility edge, providing a unique spectroscopic tool to monitor the latter. We perform both analytical and numerical studies of the one-dimensional tight-binding Hamiltonian with stochastic uncorrelated on-site energies and non-fluctuating long-range hopping integrals . It was argued recently [A. Rodriguez at al., J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 33, L161 (2000)] that this model reveals a localization-delocalization transition with respect to the disorder magnitude provided . The transition occurs at one of the band edges (the upper one for and the lower one for). The states at the other band edge are always localized, which hints on the existence of a single mobility edge. We analyze the mobility edge and show that, although the number of delocalized states tends to infinity, they form a set of null measure in the thermodynamic limit, i.e. the mobility edge tends to the band edge. We study the dynamics of an electron subjected to a static uniform electric field within a one-dimensional tight-binding model with a slowly varying aperiodic potential. The unbiased model is known to support phases of localized and extended one-electron states separated by two mobility edges. We show that the electric field promotes sustained Bloch oscillations of an initial Gaussian wave packet whose amplitude reflects the band width of extended states. The frequency of these oscillations exhibit unique features, such as a sensitivity to the initial wave packet position and a multimode structure for weak fields, originating from the characteristics of the underlying aperiodic potential., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

The density of states, even for a perfectly ordered tight-binding model, can exhibit a tail-like feature at the top of the band, provided the hopping integral falls off in space slowly enough. We apply the coherent potential approximation to study the eigenstates of a tight-binding Hamiltonian with uncorrelated diagonal disorder and long-range hopping, falling off as a power $\mu$ of the intersite distance. For a certain interval of hopping range exponent $\mu$, we show that the phase coherence length is infinite for the outermost state of the tail, irrespectively of the strength of disorder. Such anomalous feature can be explained by the smallness of the phase-space volume for the disorder scattering from this state. As an application of the theory, we mention that ballistic regime can be realized for Frenkel excitons in two-dimensional molecular aggregates, affecting to a large extent the optical response and energy transport., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PRB

We consider a two-parameter one-dimensional Hamiltonian with uncorrelated diagonal disorder and {\it non-random} long-range inter-site interaction $J_{mn}=J/|m-n|^{\mu}$. The model is critical at $1<\mu<3/2$ and reveals the localization-delocalization transition with respect to the disorder magnitude. We carry out a theoretical study of the collective spontaneous emission (superradiance) from an ultrathin film comprised of three-level atoms with $V$-configuration of the operating transitions. As the thickness of the system is small compared to the emission wavelength inside the film, the local-field correction to the averaged Maxwell field is relevant. We show that the interplay between the low-frequency quantum coherence within the subspace of the upper doublet states and the local-field correction may drastically affect the branching ratio of the operating transitions. This effect may be used for controlling the emission process by varying the doublet splitting and the amount of low-frequency coherence., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We study theoretically diffusion of one-dimensional Frenkel excitons in J-aggregates at temperatures that are smaller or of the order of the J-band width. We consider an aggregate as an open linear chain with uncorrelated on-site (diagonal) disorder that localizes the exciton at chain segments of size smaller than the full chain length. The exciton diffusion over the localization segments is considered as incoherent hopping. The diffusion is probed by the exciton fluorescence quenching which is due to the presence of point traps in the aggregate. The rate equation for populations of the localized exciton states is used to describe the exciton diffusion and trapping. We show that there exist two regimes of the exciton diffusion at low temperatures. The first, slower one, involves only the states of the very tail of the density of states, while the second, much faster one, also involves the higher states that are close to the bottom of the exciton band. The activation energy for the first regime of diffusion is of the order of one fifth of the J-band width, while for the second one it is of the order of the full J-band width.
