Abstract

Myxococcus xanthus is a unicellular organism whose cells possess the ability to move and communicate, leading to the emergence of complex collective properties and behaviours. This has made it an ideal model system to study the emergence of collective behaviours in interdisciplinary research efforts lying at the intersection of biology and physics, especially in the growing field of active matter research. Often, challenges arise when setting up reliable and reproducible culturing protocols. This tutorial provides a clear and comprehensive guide on the culture, growth, development, and experimental sample preparation of \textit{M. xanthus}. Additionally, it includes some representative examples of experiments that can be conducted using these samples, namely motility assays, fruiting body formation, predation, and elasticotaxis.

Abstract

Synthesized beam (PSF) synthetic observations with and without the antennas in Mexico are analyzed. For a simple continuum observing setup, we generated visibility files and their associated PSF images for a grid of parameters (robust weighting, tapering, and declination). The tests were done for both the MID and MID+Spiral+Core configurations and their cropped versions without antennas in Mexico. We show that the performance of the Array, in terms of the beam properties, is in general significantly better when both the MID array antennas are present in Northern Mexico and observations target southern sources. At a declination of -40 deg, there are increments in the ellipticity of at least ~1.3X and 1.2X for a tapering of 3.0 and 4.0 mas, if the antennas in Mexico are not included. For the parameter space tested, the changes in ellipticity of the MID and MID+Spiral+Core configurations differ by ~10%. Larger tapering values help to reduce the ellipticity for cropped configurations at all declinations, but it will impose more constraints in terms of angular resolution., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We present a signature scheme based on the Syndrome-Decoding problem in rank metric. It is a construction from multi-party computation (MPC), using a MPC protocol which is a slight improvement of the linearized-polynomial protocol used in [Fen22], allowing to obtain a zero-knowledge proof thanks to the MPCitH paradigm. We design two different zero-knowledge proofs exploiting this paradigm: the first, which reaches the lower communication costs, relies on additive secret sharings and uses the hypercube technique [AMGH+22]; and the second relies on low-threshold linear secret sharings as proposed in [FR22]. Abstract

We exploit the idea of [Fen22] which proposes to build an efficient signature scheme based on a zero-knowledge proof of knowledge of a solution of a MinRank instance. The scheme uses the MPCitH paradigm, which is an efficient way to build ZK proofs. We combine this idea with another idea, the hypercube technique introduced in [AMGH+22], which leads to more efficient MPCitH-based scheme. This new approach is more efficient than classical MPCitH, as it allows to reduce the number of party computation. This gives us a first scheme called MIRA-Additive. We then present an other scheme, based on low-threshold secret sharings, called MIRA-Threshold, which is a faster scheme, at the price of larger signatures. The construction of MPCitH using threshold secret sharing is detailed in [FR22]. These two constructions allows us to be faster than classical MPCitH, with a size of signature around 5.6kB with MIRA-Additive, and 8.3kB with MIRA-Threshold. We detail here the constructions and optimizations of the schemes, as well as their security proofs.

5. Visibility and Separability for a Declarative Linearizability Proof of the Timestamped Stack: Extended Version

Abstract

Linearizability is a standard correctness criterion for concurrent algorithms, typically proved by establishing the algorithms' linearization points (LP). However, LPs often hinder abstraction, and for some algorithms such as the timestamped stack, it is unclear how to even identify their LPs. In this paper, we show how to develop declarative proofs of linearizability by foregoing LPs and instead employing axiomatization of so-called visibility relations. While visibility relations have been considered before for the timestamped stack, our study is the first to show how to derive the axiomatization systematically and intuitively from the sequential specification of the stack. In addition to the visibility relation, a novel separability relation emerges to generalize real-time precedence of procedure invocation. Abstract

Linearizability is a standard correctness criterion for concurrent algorithms, typically proved by establishing the algorithms' linearization points. However, relying on linearization points leads to proofs that are implementation-dependent, and thus hinder abstraction and reuse. In this paper we show that one can develop more declarative proofs by foregoing linearization points and instead relying on a technique of axiomatization of visibility relations. While visibility relations have been considered before, ours is the first study where the challenge is to formalize the helping nature of the algorithms. In particular, we show that by axiomatizing the properties of separation between events that contain bunches of help requests, we can extract what is common for high-level understanding of several descriptor-based helping algorithms of Harris et al. (RDCSS, MCAS, and optimizations), and produce novel proofs of their linearizability that share significant components.

Abstract

The direct comparison between hydrodynamical simulations and observations is needed to improve the physics included in the former and test biases in the latter. Post-processing radiative transfer and synthetic observations are now the standard way to do this. We report on the first application of the \texttt{SKIRT} radiative transfer code to simulations of a star-forming cloud. The synthetic observations are then analyzed following traditional observational workflows. We find that in the early stages of the simulation, stellar radiation is inefficient in heating dust to the temperatures observed in Galactic clouds, thus the addition of an interstellar radiation field is necessary. The spectral energy distribution of the cloud settles rather quickly after $\sim3$ Myr of evolution from the onset of star formation, but its morphology continues to evolve for $\sim8$ Myr due to the expansion of \textsc{Hii} regions and the respective creation of cavities, filaments, and ridges. Modeling synthetic \textit{Herschel} fluxes with 1- or 2-component modified black bodies underestimates total dust masses by a factor of $\sim2$. Spatially-resolved fitting recovers up to about $70\%$ of the intrinsic value. This ``missing mass'' is located in a very cold dust component with temperatures below $10$ K, which does not contribute appreciably to the far-infrared flux. This effect could bias real observations if such dust exists in large amounts. Finally, we tested observational calibrations of the SFR based on infrared fluxes and concluded that they are in agreement when compared to the intrinsic SFR of the simulation averaged over $\sim100$ Myr.

In SIDH and SIKE protocols, public keys are defined over quadratic extensions of prime fields. We present in this work a projective invariant property characterizing affine Montgomery curves defined over prime fields. We then force a secret 3-isogeny chain to repeatedly pass through a curve defined over a prime field in order to exploit the new property and inject zeros in the A-coefficient of an intermediate curve to successfully recover the isogeny chain one step at a time. Abstract

Let $q = 2^n$, and let $E / \mathbb{F}_{q^{\ell}}$ be a generalized Galbraith--Lin--Scott (GLS) binary curve, with $\ell \ge 2$ and $(\ell, n) = 1$.We show that the GLS endomorphism on $E / \mathbb{F}_{q^{\ell}}$ induces an efficient endomorphism on the Jacobian $J_H(\mathbb{F}_q)$ of the genus-$g$ hyperelliptic curve $H$ corresponding to the image of the GHS Weil-descent attack applied to $E/\mathbb{F}_{q^\ell}$, and that this endomorphism yields a factor-$n$ speedup when using standard index-calculus procedures for solving the Discrete Logarithm Problem (DLP) on $J_H(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Our analysis is backed up by the explicit computation of a discrete logarithm defined on a prime-order subgroup of a GLS elliptic curve over the field $\mathbb{F}_{2^{5\cdot 31}}$. 13. Extending free group action on surfaces

Abstract

The present work introduces new perspectives in order to extend finite group actions from surfaces to 3-manifolds. We consider the Schur multiplier associated to a finite group $G$ in terms of principal $G$-bordisms in dimension two, called $G$-cobordisms. We are interested in the question of when a free action of a finite group on a closed oriented surface extends to a non-necessarily free action on a 3-manifold. We show the answer to this question is affirmative for abelian, dihedral, symmetric and alternating groups. As an application of our methods, we show that every non-necessarily free action of abelian groups (under certain conditions) and dihedral groups on a closed oriented surface extends to $3$-dimensional handlebody., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Recent work on Side Channel Analysis (SCA) targets old, well-known vulnerabilities, even previously exploited, reported, and patched in high-profile cryptography libraries. Nevertheless, researchers continue to find and exploit the same vulnerabilities in old and new products, highlighting a big issue among vendors: effectively tracking and fixing security vulnerabilities when disclosure is not done directly to them. In this work, we present another instance of this issue by performing the first library-wide SCA security evaluation of Mozilla's NSS security library. We use a combination of two independently-developed SCA security frameworks to identify and test security vulnerabilities. Our evaluation uncovers several new vulnerabilities in NSS affecting DSA, ECDSA, and RSA cryptosystems. Abstract

Historically, Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is an active field of applied cryptography where recent focus is on high speed, constant time, and formally verified implementations. While there are a handful of outliers where all these concepts join and land in real-world deployments, these are generally on a case-by-case basis: e.g. a library may feature such X25519 or P-256 code, but not for all curves. In this work, we propose and implement a methodology that fully automates the implementation, testing, and integration of ECC stacks with the above properties. We demonstrate the flexibility and applicability of our methodology by seamlessly integrating into three real-world projects: OpenSSL, Mozilla's NSS, and the GOST OpenSSL Engine, achieving roughly 9.5x, 4.5x, 13.3x, and 3.7x speedup on any given curve for key generation, key agreement, signing, and verifying, respectively. Furthermore, we showcase the efficacy of our testing methodology by uncovering flaws and vulnerabilities in OpenSSL, and a specification-level vulnerability in a Russian standard. Our work bridges the gap between significant applied cryptography research results and deployed software, fully automating the process.

18. Stronger and Faster Side-Channel Protections for CSIDH

Abstract

CSIDH is a recent quantum-resistant primitive based on the difficulty of finding isogeny paths between supersingular curves. Recently, two constant-time versions of CSIDH have been proposed: first by Meyer, Campos and Reith, and then by Onuki, Aikawa, Yamazaki and Takagi. While both offer protection against timing attacks and simple power consumption analysis, they are vulnerable to more powerful attacks such as fault injections. In this work, we identify and repair two oversights in these algorithms that compromised their constant-time character. By exploiting Edwards arithmetic and optimal addition chains, we produce the fastest constant-time version of CSIDH to date. We then consider the stronger attack scenario of fault injection, which is relevant for the security of CSIDH static keys in embedded hardware. We propose and evaluate a dummy-free CSIDH algorithm. While these CSIDH variants are slower, their performance is still within a small constant factor of less-protected variants. Abstract

We present a translation function from nominal rewriting systems (NRSs) to combinatory reduction systems (CRSs), transforming closed nominal rules and ground nominal terms to CRSs rules and terms, respectively, while preserving the rewriting relation. We also provide a reduction-preserving translation in the other direction, from CRSs to NRSs, improving over a previously defined translation. These tools, together with existing translations between CRSs and other higher-order rewriting formalisms, open up the path for a transfer of results between higher-order and nominal rewriting. Abstract

The current State of Art (SOA) Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) oxygen recovery system onboard the International Space Station (ISS) is complex, heavy, and power consuming system that recovers approximately 50% of the oxygen (O2) from metabolic carbon dioxide (CO2). For future long-duration missions, O2 recovery systems will need to be highly reliable, efficient, and recover maximum metabolic CO2. A minimum of 75% O2 recovery is required for future O2 recovery systems. Investigations into various technologies to help meet these requirements for exploration are ongoing; however, most of these proposed technologies ultimately result in a more complex system. A Macrofluidic Electrochemical Reactor (MFECR) is one proposed technology development effort currently underway at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) that has the potential to significantly reduce the complexity of ECLSS O2 recovery system. The MFECR operates at standard conditions, giving it an advantage over other technologies being investigated, which require high temperatures resulting in heavy reactors and high power consumption. The MFECR would replace three pieces of hardware for future ECLSS architectures: the current Carbon Dioxide Reduction Assembly (Sabatier reactor), the Plasma Pyrolysis Assembly (PPA), and the Oxygen Generation Assembly (OGA). It is designed to interface directly with the Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) and the Water Processor Assembly (WPA). This allows for a less complex system and higher reliability than the current SOA as well as reduced power, weight and H2O consumption of ECLSS. Here, we will discuss the current technology development efforts of the MFECR and how this technology may aide in the advancement of future long-duration life support systems.

A Macrofluidic Electrochemical Reactor (MFECR) technology development effort is currently underway at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to significantly increase current O2 recovery efficiency and reduce complexity of the system. This paper presents a comprehensive multi-physic 3D model developed at MSFC on CO2 conversion to O2 and C2H4 at standard conditions via MFECR. The 3D spatial domain of the model is a replica of the actual MFECR’s 3D drawing generated for the MFECR fabrication and operated to recover O2 from CO2 yielding C2H4 as byproduct. Electrochemical (EC) physics that includes EC multicomponent reaction mechanisms, mass transport, and current density distributions is coupled in the model with all the other physics phenomena involved in the process, such as free and porous fluid flow, multicomponent mass transfer, heat transfer, and DC electrical current generation along with Joule heating effect. The authors plan to use experimental results to validate this comprehensive and rigorous model and build a reliable simulator that will not only assist the authors on the MFECR design but also optimize its operation.

Abstract

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is deadly and expensive, and specific, effective therapy remains a large unmet need. We have demonstrated the beneficial effects of transplanted adult tubular cells and extracellular vesicles (EVs; exosomes) derived from those renal cells on experimental ischemic AKI, even when administered after renal failure is established. To further examine the mechanisms of benefit with renal EVs, we tested the hypothesis that EVs from other epithelia or platelets (a rich source of EVs) might be protective, using a well-characterized ischemia-reperfusion model. When given after renal failure was present, renal EVs, but not those from skin or platelets, markedly improved renal function and histology. The differential effects allowed us to examine the mechanisms of benefit with renal EVs. We found significant decreases in oxidative stress postischemia in the renal EV-treated group with preservation of renal superoxide dismutase and catalase as well as increases in anti-inflammatory interleukin-10. In addition, we propose a novel mechanism of benefit: renal EVs enhanced nascent peptide synthesis following hypoxia in cells and in postischemic kidneys.
