Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common complications of diabetes, being oxidative stress an important feature of diabetic ED. Deleterious events induced by oxidative stress lead to crucial cellular and tissue alterations targeted by oxidative lesions. However, the noxious effects of oxidative stress mechanisms in penile tissue with the progression of diabetes, remains unclear. We intended to evaluate systemic and penile oxidative stress in an early and late stage of diabetes. Male Wistar rats were divided in groups: 2 and 8‐weeks of streptozotocin‐induced type 1 diabetes, and age‐matched controls. Systemic oxidative stress was evaluated in urine by hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) quantification and in plasma by reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio. Penile oxidative status was assessed by H2 O2 production and by the evaluation of protein nitration through the detection of 3‐nitrotyrosine (3‐NT). 3‐NT was quantified by Western blotting analysis and immunohistochemistry allowed to identify its cavernosal cellular location. Systemic evaluation revealed a significant increase in urinary H2 O2 levels in both diabetic groups. A significant decrease of circulating GSH/GSSG ratio was observed in animals with late stage diabetes. In cavernosal tissue, H2 O2 production was significantly increased at 8‐weeks diabetes. Regarding 3‐NT cavernosal formation, data revealed a significant increment in advanced diabetes and a predominant location in cavernosal smooth muscle cells. We observed that systemic and cavernosal noxious effects induced by oxidative stress are predominant in advanced diabetes. Increased penile protein oxidative modifications in late‐staged diabetes may be responsible for structural/functional deregulations in cellular/molecular systems, contributing to the development of diabeticassociated ED.

A preocupação com a sustentabilidade, que emergiu principalmente a partir de eventos internacionais, passou a ser visível também na política em geral e nas estruturas de governo, sendo notável o esforço em vincular discursos políticos com a noção de sustentabilidade. Porém, o que a sociedade realmente anseia é pela prática do discurso, por um mundo em que as dimensões da sustentabilidade sejam reconhecidas, discutidas e respeitadas. Neste ínterim, este artigo tem como objetivo identificar as principais discussões em torno da temática da sustentabilidade e os stakeholders que as conduzem na Câmara Setorial da cadeia produtiva da carne bovina no Brasil nos últimos cinco anos. Para tal, foi realizada uma análise qualitativa em torno dos diálogos e ações na referida Câmara Setorial. Esta pesquisa lançou mão do método de análise de conteúdo (BARDIN, 2006), por meio do qual foram definidas categorias de análise a priori, à luz da literatura. Foram atas de 16 reuniões, embora tenham acontecido, no total, 18 reuniões no período considerado. Como resultados, foi percebida uma preocupação maior em torno da dimensão ecológica da sustentabilidade, enquanto que as outras dimensões foram pouco ou nada discutidas. A análise das atas e pautas, porém, indica que essa temática já estava definida em pauta, o que pode auxiliar a compreensão dos assuntos debatidos nas reuniões analisadas. Percebeu-se que as discussões em torno de todas as questões envolvendo a sustentabilidade foram, em sua maioria, conduzidas pelos mesmos stakeholders durante as reuniões, o que sinaliza baixa participação dos demais. The present study had as purpose the investigation of the impact of four highly used pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) on the nitrification, a crucial process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Nitrosomonas europaea is known to be sensitive to toxic compounds and was used to examine the effects of four different PhACs (trimethoprim, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and 17-α-ethinylestradiol) on microbial activity, specifically by measuring nitrite production. Significant inhibition was measured for some PhACs at 10 µM concentration when compared to controls that did not contain PhACs. The highest inhibitory PhAC was determined to be trimethoprim (19±2%) followed by ibuprofen (17±7%) and the least inhibitory compound was 17-α-ethinylestradiol (7±0.2%). No effect was observed in the presence of acetaminophen even at 100 µM. Additional experiments were performed to determine whether the inhibition was reversible. The results suggest that inhibition for trimethoprim, ibuprofen and 17-α-ethinylestradiol was reversible upon removal of these PhACs. The data suggest that PhACs may affect important microorganisms found in wastewater treatment. Neuropsychiatric symptoms are widely reported in association with both hepatitis C and IFNα treatment [1]its sequelae, and its treatment. In particular, interferon, a primary component of treatment for chronic hepatitis C, has been strongly associated with depressive symptoms. This review summarizes current knowledge about the etiology, course, and treatment of europsychiatric problems associated with hepatitis C and interferon alpha (IFN-alpha and lead to discontinuation of interferon in up to 13% of cases [2]. When on interferon treatment, cognitive, affective and behavioral symptoms are not easily distinguished from each other or from depression [2,3] mechanism, course, and treatment of neuropsychiatric problems associated with interferon alfa (IFN-alpha. The challenge is even higher if in somatoform cases. We describe a case of somatoform disorder while on classic therapy for hepatitis C and discuss the management of the patient main complaints and evolution.

The purpose of this task force was to critically analyze nine non-criteria manifestations of APS to support their inclusion as APS classification criteria. The Task Force Members selected the non-criteria clinical manifestations according to their clinical relevance, that is, the patient-important outcome from clinician perspective. They included superficial vein thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, renal microangiopathy, heart valve disease, livedo reticularis, migraine, chorea, seizures and myelitis, which were reviewed by this International Task Force collaboration, in addition to the seronegative APS (SN-APS). GRADE system was used to evaluate the quality of evidence of medical literature of each selected item. This critical appraisal exercise aimed to support the debate regarding the clinical picture of APS. We found that the overall GRADE analysis was very low for migraine and seizures, low for superficial venous thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, chorea, longitudinal myelitis and the so-called seronegative APS and moderate for APS nephropathy, heart valve lesions and livedo reticularis. The next step can be a critical redefinition of an APS gold standard, for instance derived from the APS ACTION registry that will include not only current APS patients but also those with antiphospholipid antibodies not meeting current classification criteria. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

The main objective of this study was to characterize the organic matter present in raw water and along the treatment process, as well as its seasonal variation. A natural organic matter fractionation approach has been applied to Lever water treatment plant located in Douro River, in Oporto (Portugal). The process used was based on the sorption of dissolved organic matter in different types of ion exchange resins, DAX-8, DAX-4 and IRA-958, allowing its separation into four fractions: very hydrophobic acids (VHA), slightly hydrophobic acids (SHA), charged hydrophilic (CHA) and hydrophilic neutral (NEU). The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) determination was used to quantify dissolved organic matter. Samples were collected monthly, during approximately one year, from raw water captured at the surface and under the bed of the river, and after each step of the treatment: pre-filtration in sand/anthracite filters, ozonation, coagulation/flocculation, counter current dissolved air flotation and filtration (CoCoDAFF) and chlorination. The NEU fraction showed a seasonal variation, with maximum values in autumn for the sampling points corresponding to raw water captured at the surface and under the bed of the river. It was usually the predominating fraction and did not show a significant decrease throughout the treatment. Nevertheless their low concentration, the same occurred for the CHA and VHA fractions. There was an overall decrease in the SHA fraction throughout the water treatment (especially after CoCoDAFF and ozonation) as well as in the DOC. The TSUVA254 values obtained for raw water generally varied between 2.0 and 4.0 L mgC-1 m-1 and between 0.75 and 1.78 L mgC-1 m-1 for treated water. It was observed a decrease of TSUVA values along the treatment, especially after ozonation. These results may contribute to a further optimization in the process of treating water for human consumption.

According to the literature, lung cancer patients experience greater emotional distress than other cancer patients, with scores as high as 61,6%. Poor prognosis, guilt and stigma associated with a history of smoking, may be related with this morbidity. Several studies mention the prevalence of depression to be between 16 and 22%. As distress affects the family as well, mostly those members involved in the patient care, they should not be forgotten and must be involved in the treatment plan. The authors conclude that lung cancer patients' distress is highly prevalent and interferes with quality of live and, possibly, prognosis. Therefore, psychosocial care should be integrated early in cancer treatment.
