– We studied the migratory behaviour of armado, Pterodoras granulosus, in the Parana River Basin of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, during 1997–2005. This species invaded the Upper Parana River after upstream dispersal was facilitated when Itaipu Reservoir inundated a natural barrier. Fish were tagged (N = 8051) in the mainstems of the Yacyreta and Itaipu reservoirs, bays of major tributaries, the Parana River floodplain above Itaipu Reservoir, and below dams. In all, 420 fish were recaptured of which 61% moved away from the release area. Fish moved a maximum of 215 km (mean 42), and at a maximum rate of 9.4 km·day−1 (mean 0.6). Of the 256 armados that moved away from the release site, 145 moved upstream towards unimpounded stretches of the Parana River and 111 moved downstream into the reservoir and bays of its tributaries (maximum 150 km). Based on the observed migratory movements, we suspect that most of the reproductive output originates in tributaries to the reservoirs. The ability of this species to expand its range presents a conundrum by pitting fishery management interests against conservation needs. Maintenance of the important armado fisheries depends on the ability of the species to migrate freely to use spawning and nursery areas in reservoir tributaries and floodplains. However, its ability to migrate long distances can allow this non-native species the opportunity to invade most of the Upper Parana River.

The reproductive strategies of potamodromous fish of the Plata basin involve upstream migration and passive downstream movements of eggs and larvae for dozens of kilometres. At the end of the downstream movements, the fry need marginal lagoons or bays in order for their development to be successful. The construction of reservoirs, often in series, has interrupted the movements, and is perhaps the main factor in the decrease in the abundance of migratory fish in the basin. In an attempt to lessen the impact on the upstream migrations, fish passages (floodgates, elevators and mainly ladders) have been constructed and, despite limitations, they have functioned with relative success. Some studies show the continuity of the migration of individuals captured downstream and released into the reservoir. However, downstream migration of adult migratory species is made difficult by the fact that they are, in this phase, generally reophylic (live in running water) and occupy only the upper stretches of reservoirs (fluvial and transitional zones). It would be feasible only in short reservoirs and with a very short residence time. The fact that reservoirs present calm waters, more transparency and contain a large number of small fish could delay the passive drift of eggs and larvae, exposing them to intense predation and/or promoting their settling toward deeper water, where the conditions of oxygenation are generally critical. In the remote event that the larvae reach the dam, most of them cannot be attracted to ladders (elevators are conceived only for upstream movements) or driven away from the reservoir vicinities, in as much as they have passive movements and would therefore suffer great mortality if they passed through turbines or a spillway. In reservoirs with large free stretches upstream and endowed with ample natural floodplain areas, transposition can be an useful instrument in the maintenance of genetic heterogeneity since the number of transposed specimens does not compromise the stocks of the lower stretch. These limitations, connected to the strategy of neotropical fishes, make fish passages in most situations an inadequate instrument for preservational management. This study characterized the morphological differences among migratory fish species from the Paraná River Basin. A total of 177 adult fish of Leporinus elongatus, Leporinus macrocephalus, Prochilodus lineatus, Salminus brasiliensis, Pimelodus maculatus, Pinirampus pirinampu, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Pterodoras granulosus, and Rhaphiodon vulpinus were sampled in the Canal da Piracema, a fish passage system at Itaipu Dam, Paraná River. The migratory species were analyzed through 22 morphometric measurements and fineness ratio to identify morphological patterns related to swimming performance. Four species groups were indicated by the Cluster analysis: I) R. vulpinus; II) P. corruscans; III) L. macrocephalus, L. elongatus, P. lineatus, P. maculatus, and S. brasiliensis - measurements of head height and anal fin length formed this group; and IV) P. granulosus and P. pirinampu - measurements of maximum body width and caudal peduncle width contributed to form this group. The morphometric variables that most contributed to the distinction were head length and mouth width for groups I and II. The species R. vulpinus and P. granulosus differed from other species, showing fineness ratios of 9.4 and 3.7, respectively. Leporinus elongatus, L. macrocephalus, P. lineatus, P. maculatus, and S. brasiliensis showed significant differences from other species, with ratios ranging from 4.57 to 5.19, indicating that these species may be better swimmers. Long-distance migratory species using the Piracema Canal to ascend upstream areas differed morphologically, morphological characteristics such as a narrow caudal peduncle and maximum body length, besides to the values of the fineness ratio, were essential to differentiate the migratory species. Este estudo caracterizou as diferenças morfológicas entre espécies de peixes migradores da bacia do rio Paraná. Um total de 117 peixes adultos das espécies Leporinus elongatus, Leporinus macrocephalus, Prochilodus lineatus, Salminus brasiliensis, Pimelodus maculatus, Pinirampus pirinampu, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Pterodoras granulosus e Rhaphiodon vulpinus foram capturados no Canal da Piracema, um sistema de transposição para peixes na barragem de Itaipu, rio Paraná. As espécies migradoras foram analisadas através de 22 medidas morfométricas e razão fineza para identificar padrões morfológicos relacionados à capacidade natatória. Quatro grupos de espécies foram evidenciados pela Análise de Cluster: I) R. vulpinus; II) P. corruscans; III) L. macrocephalus, L. elongatus, P. lineatus, P. maculatus e S. brasiliensis, medidas de altura de cabeça e comprimento da nadadeira anal formaram este grupo; e IV) P. granulosus e P. pirinampu - medidas de largura máxima do corpo e largura do pedúnculo caudal contribuíram para a formação deste grupo. As variáveis morfométricas que mais contribuíram para distinção dos grupos I e II foram comprimento da cabeça e largura da boca. As espécies R. vulpinus e P. granulosus diferiram das demais, apresentando razão de fineza de 9,4 e 3,7, respectivamente. Leporinus elongatus, L. macrocephalus, P. lineatus, P. maculatus, S. brasiliensis diferiram significativamente das demais espécies com valores de razão fineza que variaram entre 4,57 a 5,19, indicando que estas espécies podem apresentar melhor desempenho natatório. As espécies migradoras de longa distância que utilizam o Canal da Piracema para ascender áreas a montante diferiram morfologicamente, características morfológicas como pedúnculo caudal estreito e largura máxima do corpo, bem como os valores de razão de fineza foram determinantes na diferenciação das espécies aqui analisadas.

In this study, we evaluated the fish ascent in the experimental ladder at Itaipu Reservoir (Paraná State, Brazil), in relation to diel variation, fish size, reproductive stages and species composition. The study was carried out from October, 1995 to February, 1996 and from November, 1996 to January, 1997 at two points on the ladder (boxes at heights of 10 and 27 m). Twenty-two species were recorded, and Prochilodus lineatus, Pimelodus maculatus, Leporinus obtusidens, Schizodon borellii and Leporinus friderici accounted for 86.6 % of the total catch. Fish length did not differ between diel periods and boxes. On the other hand, fish abundance of the main species was significantly influenced by box position, reproductive stage and diel period. The higher box showed lower abundance, suggesting some selectivity in ascension. The ability to ascend the ladder did not show any relationship with reproductive migration, since non-reproductive adults comprised most of the catch. An interesting finding is that the major taxonomic groups showed specific diel preferences in ascending the ladder: Characiformes ascended the ladder predominantly during daylight, whereas Siluriformes migrated at night. These results emphasize how complex ladders are as management tools, and stress the need to acquire information on several aspects as a condition to achieve conservation goals. Nesse estudo, a transposição de peixes na escada experimental do reservatório de Itaipu (Paraná, Brasil) foi avaliada em relação à variação diária, tamanho dos peixes, estágios reprodutivos e a composição das espécies. O estudo foi conduzido de Outubro de 1995 a Fevereiro de 1996, e de Novembro de 1996 a Janeiro de 1997, em dois trechos da escada (caixas a 10 e 27 m de altura). Vinte e duas espécies foram registradas, e Prochilodus lineatus, Pimelodus maculatus, Leporinus obtusidens, Schizodon borellii e Leporinus friderici compuseram 86,6% das capturas. O tamanho dos peixes não diferiu entre os períodos do dia e caixas. Por outro lado, a abundância das principais espécies foi significativamente influenciada pela posição das caixas, estágio de reprodução e período do dia. A caixa superior tendeu a apresentar menor abundância de peixes, sugerindo certa seletividade na subida. A habilidade em ascender a escada não esteve relacionada com a migração reprodutiva, visto que adultos não-reprodutivos compuseram a maior parte das capturas. Um padrão interessante foi a preferência, apresentada pelos grandes grupos taxonômicos, por períodos específicos do dia na ascensão da escada: os Characiformes subiram a escada predominantemente durante o dia, enquanto os Siluriformes durante a noite. Esses resultados enfatizam o quão complexas são as escadas como ferramentas de manejo, e realçam a necessidade de ampliar o nível de informações sobre diversos aspectos como condição chave para que metas conservacionistas sejam alcançadas.

A preliminary study on the application of radio-telemetry techniques to describe the movements of fish in a bypass channel at Itaipu Dam (Paraná River), known as "Canal da Piracema," was carried out between January and February of 2004. Fourteen individuals of six species (Prochilodus lineatus, Leporinus friderici, Schizodon borellii, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, Pterodoras granulosus and Cichla kelberi) were intragastrically and surgically radiotagged and monitored by three experimental fixed radio-telemetry stations installed in the upper portion of the Canal. The surgical implantation of transmitters and the anesthesia using clove oil proved to be more efficient and allowed easier handling in comparison to intragastric implantation and electronarcosis immobilization. The use of fixed stations to obtain data was found to be very suitable for tracking movements of several different fish species in the Itaipu lateral channel. Three species (P. granulosus, S. borellii and C. kelberi) moved downstream after release. Two individuals of P. fasciatum and two of P. lineatus migrated upstream, leaving the channel 7 and 10 days and 2 and 24 days after release, respectively. Leporinus friderici was the only species that did not leave the release site until the end of the study period. Um estudo preliminar sobre a aplicação de técnicas de radiotelemetria para descrever os movimentos de peixes no canal de transposição da UHE Itaipu (Rio Paraná), conhecido como "Canal da Piracema", foi realizado entre janeiro e fevereiro de 2004. Seis espécies (Prochilodus lineatus, Leporinus friderici, Schizodon borellii, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, Pterodoras granulosus e Cichla kelberi) totalizando 14 indivíduos foram marcadas com radiotransmissores via cirúrgica e esofágica e rastreados através de três estações fixas experimentais de radiotelemetria instaladas na porção superior do Canal. A implantação de transmissores através de cirurgia e a anestesia por óleo de cravo mostraram-se mais eficientes e de fácil manejo do que a imobilização por eletronarcose e a implantação intragástrica. A utilização de estações fixas para obtenção dos dados mostrou-se apropriada para rastrear os movimentos de diferentes espécies no canal de transposição de Itaipu. Três espécies (P. granulosus, S. borellii e C. kelberi) movimentaram-se para jusante após a soltura. Dois indivíduos de P. fasciatum e dois de P. lineatus migraram para montante, deixando o canal 7 e 10 dias e 2 e 24 dias após a soltura, respectivamente. Leporinus friderici foi a única espécie que não deixou o local de soltura até o final do estudo.

The Canal da Piracema is the longest (nearly 10 km) fish pass system in the world. The construction of this fish pass was somehow controversial, because it connected two distinct ichthyofaunistic provinces. This study evaluated the ichthyofauna present in the Canal da Piracema and the abundance and distribution of long-distance migratory fish species along this fish pass system (evaluated possible selectivity). The Canal da Piracema was shown to be difficult to sample because of its environmental heterogeneity: artificial ponds, ladders and nature-like fish pass. To solve this problem, we used several fishing gears, adequate for the several biotopes present (unstructured and structured littoral were sampled with seining nets and electrofishing; lentic were sampled with gillnets and longlines (deeper areas); and rapid water areas were sampled with cast nets). The ichthyofauna of the Canal da Piracema followed the pattern for South America and the Paraná River, with a predominance of Characiformes and Siluriformes. The most representative families were Characidae, Anostomidae, Pimelodidae and Loricariidae. We captured 116 species (17 were long-distance migratory) during the period studied. Small-sized species were predominant in unstructured and structured littoral areas, especially Bryconamericus exodon and Apareiodon affinis.The most abundant species was Hypostomus spp. in lentic areas, followed by Iheringichthys labrosus. Hoplias aff. malabaricus predominated in deeper lentic areas. Long-distance migratory species were abundant in rapid waters; they were Prochilodus lineatus and Leporinus elongatus. The sharp reduction in the number of species, including migratory ones, is an indication that the Canal da Piracema is selecting the species that ascend it. Therefore, the search for information on the efficiency of the various fish passes present in the Canal da Piracema is fundamental, to facilitate upward movements of fish. If this is reached, this polemic fish pass has the potential to contribute to the conservation of fish stocks in Itaipu Reservoir and upstream stretches, because of the presence of spawning and development (nurseries) areas for migratory species. O Canal da Piracema é considerado o maior sistema de transposição para peixes no mundo, com 10 km de extensão. A sua construção foi controversa, pois viabilizou a conexão entre duas províncias ictiofaunísticas distintas. Este trabalho buscou avaliar a ictiofauna presente no Canal da Piracema, a abundância e distribuição das espécies migradoras de longa distância ao longo deste sistema de transposição (indicação de seletividade). O Canal da Piracema mostrou-se difícil de ser amostrado, devido a sua elevada heterogeneidade ambiental: lagos artificiais, escadas e canais semi-naturais, sendo utilizados diversos aparelhos de pesca, adequados aos diversos biótopos (litoral não estruturado e estruturado, amostrados com redes de arrasto e pesca elétrica; lêntico, amostrado com redes de espera e espinhel (mais profundo); e águas rápidas, amostradas com tarrafas). A ictiofauna presente seguiu o padrão para a América do Sul e rio Paraná, com amplo domínio de Characiformes e Siluriformes, sendo Characidae, Anostomidae, Pimelodidade e Loricariidae as famílias mais representativas. Ao todo foram capturadas 116 espécies sendo que 17 eram migradoras de longas distâncias. Nas regiões litorâneas estruturadas e não estruturadas do Canal da Piracema, as capturas se restringiram às espécies de pequeno porte, sendo as mais representativas Bryconamericus exodon e Apareiodon affinis.Nas áreas lênticas houve predomínio de Hypostomus spp., seguidos de Iheringichthys labrosus. Nas áreas lênticas profundas a espécie mais capturada foi Hoplias aff. malabaricus. Nas áreas de águas rápidas houve maior captura de espécies migradoras de longa distância, sendo Prochilodus lineatus e Leporinus elongatus as mais capturadas. A redução acentuada, no sentido de jusante a montante, inclusive das migradoras, indica que o Canal da Piracema está sendo seletivo. Então, a busca de informações dos vários tipos de sistemas de transposição existentes ao longo do Canal da Piracema é fundamental para permitir a movimentação ascendente de peixes. Se isto for alcançado, este polêmico mecanismo de transposição tem potencial para contribuir para a conservação dos estoques de peixes no reservatório de Itaipu e segmento a montante, devido a presença de áreas de desova e crescimento necessários para as espécies migradoras.

Este trabalho teve como objetivos levantar a perda de carga provocada pela infestação de Limnoperna fortunei em condutos forçados, avaliar a eficiência moluscicida do látex de Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii, avaliar o efeito de altas pressões e descompressões e verificar a velocidade mínima de água necessária para a soltura de L. fortunei após a incrustação em aço carbono. Os testes de escoamento em condutos forçados com diâmetros de 2in, 2 ½in, 3in e 4in foram realizados com conchas de animais mortos fixadas nestas tubulações com Araldite®. Foi mostrado que a infestação promove acréscimos significativos nas perdas de carga distribuídas, para diversos níveis de vazão. Para avaliar a toxicidade do látex, indivíduos foram expostos, em laboratório, a concentrações de 0,1 a 1000 ppm em 3 temperaturas (18oC, 20oC e 22oC) por 24 a 240 horas. O tamanho dos mexilhões e atemperatura influenciam na resposta. Entretanto, nenhuma das concentrações causou a mortalidade de 50% dos indivíduos expostos em 24 horas. Os testes de pressão foram realizados em campo através da submissão de indivíduos, por 5 minutos, a pressões que variaram de 10 a 130 mca e despressurizações instantâneas. Os resultados mostraram que essas variações não foram prejudiciais ao mexilhão. Os ensaios de velocidade também foram realizados em campo, com placas submersas por 5 a 13 meses contendo mexilhões incrustados. No interior do aparato, as vazões foram aumentadas sequencialmente até que todos os mexilhões fossem soltos. A velocidade máxima de fluxo de água necessária para a soltura do mexilhão foi 2,87 m/s. Ao final, é apresentado um conjunto de recomendações para a continuidade dos trabalhos This work describes a study developed to evaluate the impact of Limnoperna fortunei in water closed conduits and test some mechanisms for reduction of its incrustation in industrial pipelines. The main goals of this study are to estimate the hydraulic head loss in closedconduits caused by the L. fortunei incrustation, to evaluate the efficiency of the molluscicides based on the latex extracted from the Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii to control L. fortunei infestation, to assess the effects of high pressure gradients on L. fortunei incrustation, and todetermine the minimum flow speed capable of pulling away the individuals of L. fortunei incrusted in steel pipelines. Several experimental tests are performed on closed conduits with diameters of 2in, 2 ½ in, 3in, and 4in, in which shells of death individuals have been fixed with Araldite®. The experimental results show that the infestation of L. fortunei provokes significant increases in the hydraulic loss for several levels of flow rate. In the evaluation of the latex toxicity, individuals are exposed in laboratory to concentration of 0.1 to 1000 ppm, at three temperatures (18C, 20C, and 22C), during 24 and 240 hours. The results show that theindividual size and the temperature affect the response of the L. fortunei to the latex toxicity. However, no latex concentration is able to kill 50% of the exposed individuals in 24 hours. The evaluation of the pressure gradient effects is carried out in field, by exposing individuals to pressure variations of 10 and 130 mca and instantaneous depressurizations. The results show that the pressure gradients are not harmful to the L. fortunei. The flow speed tests are also performed in field, using grid plates with incrusted individuals submersed during 5 and 13 months. In the experimental apparatus the flow rates are increased until all individuals are pulled away from the grids. The maximum flow speed for the L. fortunei release is about 2.87 m/s. At the end of this work, several recommendations and suggestions are presented aiming at the research continuity

The Canal da Piracema is the longest fish passage in the world and the solely of its kind in South America. It was constructed aiming to favor the gene flow of the Paraná River ichthyofauna and to promote outdoors activities, such as canoeing and rafting, in some components of the Canal. The studies already conducted in the Canal evaluated species richness and the ascent efficiency of migratory species using distinct methodologies (surveys and radiotelemetry). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible multiple uses of the Canal. Specifically, it was evaluated the effect of canoeing on fish movements and the factors that may restrict the ascent efficiency of migratory species. The influence of canoeing was studied based on samplings of fish conducted in the sector of the Canal named Canal de Águas Bravas (CAAB), comparing samples gathered in days with and without canoeing. Models for every possible influence scenario were proposed and adjusted to identify the best fit. Differences observed in the relative abundances of fish in CAAB showed the possible dissuasive effect of canoeing. The ascent of migratory fish was evaluated using the technology of radio frequency identification (RFID) and passive electronic tags (PIT). Significant differences were obtained in the time (in days) of ascent for individuals tagged and released downstream the sector Canal de Deságue do rio Bela Vista (CABV; considered the bottleneck of the Canal) from those tagged and released upstream this sector. The results indicated that the time of permanence in the Canal is high, which may compromise reproductive strategies. In addition, fish movements of tagged fish (mainly Characiformes) occurred during the day. Thus, PIT tag contributed to obtain more detailed information on the effect of CABV in the movements of fish in the Canal. O Canal da Piracema é o maior sistema de transposição de peixes do mundo e o único em sua modalidade na América do Sul. Foi construído para atender a duas finalidades básicas: favorecer o fluxo gênico da ictiofauna na bacia do rio Paraná e propiciar a prática de atividades desportivas (especialmente canoagem e rafting) em determinados componentes do sistema. Os estudos até então realizados no sistema haviam avaliado a riqueza de espécies e a eficiência de ascensão para espécies migratórias, empregando diferentes metodologias. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o uso múltiplo do sistema, analisando a possível influência da canoagem na movimentação dos peixes e os fatores que possam estar restringindo a eficiência de ascensão das espécies migratórias. A influência da atividade desportiva foi analisada por meio de amostragens dos peixes no componente utilizado para este fim (Canal de águas bravas - CAAB), comparando-se as amostras obtidas em dias sem e com canoagem, com base num modelo proposto para representar os cenários possíveis. As diferenças observadas na abundância relativa de peixes no CAAB evidenciaram efeito dissuasor da canoagem, entre outros. A ascensão de espécies migratórias foi avaliada com o uso de tecnologia de identificação por rádio freqüência - RFID (Radio frequency identification) e marcas eletrônicas passivas do tipo PIT-tag. Diferenças significativas foram observadas para o tempo de ascensão entre indivíduos marcados a jusante do componente denominado Canal de deságüe - CABV (considerado o gargalo do sistema) e os marcados a montante dessa estrutura, evidenciando que o tempo de permanência no sistema é elevado, podendo comprometer a estratégia reprodutiva. Também, foram observadas características dos padrões nictemerais de atividade para algumas espécies de Characiformes no sistema. 69 f

A recente introdução do molusco Limnoperna fortunei nas bacias hidrográficas sul-americanas, provavelmente trazida do sudeste asiático por meio da água de lastro de embarcações, tem causado impactos ambientais e provocado prejuízos econômicos, já percebidos no Brasil, em sistemas de captação e adução de água e em usinas hidrelétricas. Colonizando sistemas hidráulicos, o L. fortunei cresce em camadas, obstruindo tubulações, gerando perdas de eficiência e paradas nos sistemas para limpeza e desobstrução. No dimensionamento de condutos forçados, são consideradas perdas de carga decorrentes de asperezas internas das tubulações, freqüentemente pelo uso de ábacos e tabelas disponíveis na literatura. No entanto, não se conhece ainda as condições operativas de tubulações infestadas pelo L. fortunei, de forma que a adoção de valores e coeficientes para a estimativa da perda de carga pode levar a resultados equivocados, se comparados com a realidade. No presente trabalho é realizada uma avaliação das condições operativas de condutos forçados infestados pelo L. fortunei, mediante a análise do fator de atrito e aumento da perda de carga. Devido ao fato desse problema ser relativamente novo no Brasil, existe atualmente muito pouco material disponível no país acerca desse assunto. Além disso, a bibliografia apresenta resultados obtidos em outros países sob condições diversas das existentes no Brasil. Os resultados obtidos indicam que a presença desse molusco em sistemas de condutos forçados, em taxas de infestação muito inferiores àquelas já verificadas em bacias hidrográficas brasileiras, pode levar esses sistemas ao colapso pela total perda de eficiência hidráulica. The recent introduction of the mollusk Limnoperna fortunei in the south Americans watersheds, probably brought from the Asiatic southern by the blast water of the ships, has caused environmental impacts and promoted economical losses, it is already realized in Brazil in water capture, pipe systems and hydropower plants. Colonizing the hydraulicsystems, L. fortunei grows in layers, obstructing the pipelines, causing efficiency losses and pipe systems stoppage for cleaning. The pressurized pipeline design considers head losses caused by internal roughness in the pipeline, frequently using available charts and tables in the literature. However, the operational conditions of the pipes infested by the L. fortunei are unknown, so that the adoption of values and coefficients to estimate the head loss can drive to mistaken results ifcompared to the reality. The present work shows an evaluation about the L. fortunei infestation effect in the pipelines concerning the friction factor and the increase of the head losses. Due to the fact that thisproblem is relatively recent in Brazil, theres few information about this subject currently in the country. Moreover, the bibliography presents results obtained in countries under different conditions of the existing ones in Brazil. The obtained results indicate that the presence of this mollusk in the pressurized pipelines systems, in smaller rates than those already observed in Brazilians watersheds, may take thesystem to the collapse by the total hydraulic efficiency loss.

Many Neotropical fish species displace extensive migration in order to complete their life cycles, since the needed habitats for reproduction, growing and feeding are many times distant by hundreds kilometers. The application of new tools and technologies to monitor and investigate the movements, to determinate the areas used by species and on the evaluation of fish passages are an alternative to answer the questions related to behavior patterns in short term, optimizing not just the results but also the resources applied in these studies. In this thesis, the movements of six long distance migratory species in high flow waters and fish ways were evaluated. In the first part were described the movements of 73 individuals of Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816) in 400 km in the upper Uruguay River, between November 2001 and April 2004, using radiotelemetry techniques. In the second part, the efficiency of Migration Channel located at ITAIPU on fish migration was investigated. Were radiotagged and tracked 77 individuals of six species between October 2004 and March 2006. The experiences and results obtained in these researches provided important indicatives about the radiotelemetry application in freshwater environments and Neotropical migratory fish species, about the migratory behavior of Salminus brasiliensis in free stretches of the Uruguay River and about migratory behavior of fish species on fish passages. Muitas espécies de peixes neotropicais realizam extensivas migrações para completarem seu ciclo de vida, uma vez que os habitats necessários para reprodução, crescimento e alimentação muitas vezes estão separados por centenas de quilômetros. A aplicação de novas ferramentas e tecnologias no monitoramento do deslocamento, determinação de áreas utilizadas pelas espécies e na avaliação de mecanismos de transposição surge como uma alternativa para responder às questões relacionadas aos padrões comportamentais em escala de tempo menor, otimizando não só os resultados como também os recursos destinados a esses estudos. Neste estudo foram avaliados os deslocamentos de seis espécies migradoras de longa distância em águas de alto fluxo e mecanismo de transposição. Na pesquisa descrita na Parte I foram descritos os movimentos de 73 exemplares de Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816) num trecho de 400 km do rio Uruguai superior, entre novembro de 2001 e abril de 2004, através de técnicas de radiotelemetria. Na Parte II foi avaliada a eficiência do Canal Lateral de Migração da UHE Itaipu Binacional na passagem de peixes migradores. Foram marcadas com radiotransmissores e rastreadas entre outubro de 2004 e março de 2006, seis espécies migradoras de longa distância num total de 77 exemplares. As experiências adquiridas e resultados obtidos nas pesquisas desta tese forneceram importantes indicativos acerca da aplicabilidade da radiotelemetria em ambientes e espécies neotropicais, do comportamento migratório de Salminus brasiliensis em trechos livres de barramento e do comportamento de espécies migradoras na passagem por mecanismos de transposição. 52 f
