The objective of this work is to identify the rituals related for the protection of domestic animals raised on the Mayan “solares” of Yaxcaba and Yaxunah, Yucatan, Mexico. On the “solar” are especially raised domestic animals (chickens, turkeys and pigs), which are an important element for peasant families, because they are part of economy, their daily food, in the festivities, ceremonies and rituals to give continuity to family and communal life. Our results show that the Catholic families of Yaxcaba an Yaxunah continue to perform ceremonies such as k’eex loj, the loj, the jets’ lu’um and primicia de saka’ (sacred corn drink), the purpose of these ceremonies is to ask permission and to thank the “owners” of nature for the use that is made of the resources, which favors a relationship of balance with them, in this way the “Owners” will take care of entire “solar” and the inhabitants of this space, the family members and the animals raised are safeguarded from the “malos vientos” or k’as k’aas íik’, causing disease and calamities. This study highlights the vision of the world that persists in the peninsular Mayan communities, biocultural knowledge and practices are preserved that show the ways of relating to nature. Domestic dogs can negatively impact natural systems, and understanding these dynamics is essential to mitigate their impact. We report two cases of attacks of domestic dogs on native mammals in a fragmented landscape of the Atlantic Forest, southern Brazil. Our records occurred in a region of high priority for the conservation of this biome. We observed two attacks, one on a Common Long‐Nosed Armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus and another on a Southern Brown Howler Monkey Alouatta guariba clamitans. Our records highlight additional threats to the wild and native fauna reinforcing the importance of accounting for the presence of domestic fauna when delineating conservation strategies in highly fragmented environments. The introduction of European domestic fauna in the process of Spanish conquest represented a major change in the cultural use of animals, with influence on the kind of acquisition and processing. Although this item has been recognized, in fact has been poorly documented. The initial hypothesis of this paper assume that the introduction of domestic animals induce a reduction in faunal diversity on human settlements. To measure these changes were used numerical approaches, such as index of Shannon and Taxonomic Distinctness, either Seriation, which facilitated the search of patterns. Those analyzes were applied in two sites located in the Basin of México with evidences of both prehispanic and post conquest settlements, both were studied previously and the excavation units allow a detailed and differential analysis of the faunal findings. The results of both sites suggest a faunal use pattern, were the most radical change was the introduction of European domestic fauna, mainly cattle, sheep and, to a lesser extent, poultry; while persistence, representing local resources, was the use of wild turkey and, to a lesser extent, of some fish and waterfowl. It was observed a tendency to a lower faunal diversity at post-conquest sites. Those elements allow us to suggest a differential impact on the introduction of European domestic fauna and also a time period where it was used both introduced and local fauna, but finally the former predominate.
