SUMMARY The horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio inversion is a traditional technique for deriving the local subsurface structure on Earth. We calculated the H/V from the ambient vibrations at different wind levels at the InSight landing site, on Mars, and also computed the H/V from the S-wave coda of the martian seismic events (marsquakes). Different H/V curves were obtained for different wind periods and from the marsquakes. From the ambient vibrations, the recordings during low-wind periods are close to the instrument self-noise level. During high-wind periods, the seismic recordings are highly contaminated by the interaction of the lander with the wind and the martian ground. Therefore, these recordings are less favourable for traditional H/V analysis. Instead, the recordings of the S-wave coda of marsquakes were preferred to derive the characteristic H/V curve of this site between 0.4 and 10 Hz. The final H/V curve presents a characteristic trough at 2.4 Hz and a strong peak at 8 Hz. Using a full diffuse wavefield approach as the forward computation and the Neighbourhood Algorithm as the sampling technique, we invert for the 1-D shear wave velocity structure at the InSight landing site. Based on our inversion results, we propose a strong site effect at the InSight site to be due to the presence of a shallow high-velocity layer (SHVL) over low-velocity units. The SHVL is likely placed below a layer of coarse blocky ejecta and can be associated with Early Amazonian basaltic lava flows. The units below the SHVL have lower velocities, possibly related to a Late Hesperian or Early Amazonian epoch with a different magmatic regime and/or a greater impact rate and more extensive weathering. An extremely weak buried low velocity layer (bLVL) between these lava flows explains the data around the 2.4 Hz trough, whereas a more competent bLVL would not generate this latter feature. These subsurface models are in good agreement with results from hammering experiment and compliance measurements at the InSight landing site. Finally, this site effect is revealed only by seismic events data and explains the larger horizontal than vertical ground motion recorded for certain type of marsquakes.

Marsquake recordings by NASA’s InSight seismometer often have low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) owing to low marsquake amplitudes - only a handful of events are over M3.5 and epicentral distances are large, due to the single station being located in a seismically quiet region, and highly fluctuating atmospheric, spacecraft and instrumental noise signals.We have previously shown [1] how deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) can be used for 1) event detection - thereby producing an event catalogue consistent with the manually curated catalogue by the Marsquake Service (MQS) [2], and further extending it from 1297 to 2079 seismic events - as well as for 2) separating event and noise signals in time-frequency domain. Due to the low number of events readily-available for network training, we trained the CNN on synthetic event data combined with recorded InSight noise.Here, we construct a semi-synthetic data set (with real marsquake & noise data) to assess the denoising performance of the CNN w.r.t. to various evaluation metrics such as SNR, signal-distortion-ratio, cross-correlation, and peak amplitude of the recovered event waveforms, and compare modifications of the CNN architecture and the training data set.For a large number of identified events [1,2] no distance estimates are available (or only with high uncertainty), and for all but a small subset the back azimuth is unclear, as the relatively high background noise often obscures this information in the waveforms. We explore how the denoised waveforms can support the phase picking and polarisation analysis of marsquakes, and with that their localisation, as well as their general characterisation. We present the status of ShakeMap-EU, an initiative initially proposed in 2018 to: (i) provide an integrated archive of ShakeMaps at the European level built on EPOS Seismology (www.epos-eu.org/tcs/seismology) services & data products and modern community software; (ii) serve as a backup to authoritative ShakeMap implementations; (iii) deliver ShakeMaps for Euro-Mediterranean regions where no local capability is yet available. ShakeMap-EU products are accessible since mid-2020 at the web portal shakemapeu.ingv.it. Jointly governed by the institutions participating in the initiative, ShakeMap-EU is founded on voluntary institutional contributions and EC-funded projects. ShakeMap-EU has become a reliable European seismological service that can easily and consistently integrate authoritative models and workflows. The system is based on: (a) the latest version of ShakeMap® (usgs.github.io/shakemap); (b) the earthquake information delivered by the EMSC (www.emsc-csem.org); (c) the earthquake shaking data distributed by ORFEUS (orfeus-eu.org/data/strong); (d) the ground motion models adopted within EFEHR (www.efehr.org) for mapping seismic hazard across Europe; (d) the official ShakeMap configurations of some of the most hazardous countries in Europe. Configuration of, and input to the system are managed via a GitHub repository that allows automatic / manual triggering and interaction by authorized users. ShakeMap-EU provides a collaboration framework and laboratory for seismological agencies to address the challenges posed by the heterogeneity of ground shaking mapping strategies across Europe and the need to promote homogenization and best practices in this domain. ShakeMap-EU is used in research projects as the test platform for novel international collaborative research: among recent examples are the ongoing enhancements towards an evolutionary hazard information system including real-time seismicity characterisation and information on earthquake-induced phenomena.

Single-station polarization analysis allows us to extract wave parameters, such as inclination, azimuth, and ellipticity angle, directly from a recorded seismic signal theoretically. In reality, however, seismic data are not purely polarized in the finite analysis window due to varying noise levels, complex wavefield interactions, and calibration errors. Hence, this would potentially influence the observation window of phases of interest. In order to minimize these systematic errors, the involvement of arrays and array processing techniques can further increase the signal-to-noise ratio of coherent signals in a wavefield, which allows us to identify different seismic phases, especially the weaker phases that are usually difficult to observe in a single waveform, even after filtering for a desired wave type. In this study, we present a new approach that combines polarization analysis and filtering in the time-frequency domain using the S-transform with conventional array analysis such as beamforming to enhance seismic signals and distinguish different phases based on their expected slownesses and backazimuth. We apply this approach on AlpArray data and demonstrate wavefield separation in vespagrams using various polarization filters. We also discuss the benefits of our approach especially on small amplitude inner core phases (e.g., PKIKPPKIKP) and their applications for advancing seismological study of Earth’s inner core.

After more than 4 Earth years of operation on the martian surface monitoring the planet’s ground vibrations, the InSight’s seismometer is now retired. Throughout the mission, analyses of body waves from marsquakes and impacts have led to important discoveries about the martian interior structure of the crust, mantle, and core. Recent detection of surface waves, together with gravimetric modeling enabled the characterization of crustal structure variations away from the InSight landing site and showed that average crustal velocity and density structure is similar between the northern lowlands and the southern highlands. Especially for the observed overtones and multi-orbiting surface waves in S1222a, we find the depth sensitivity expands down to the uppermost mantle close to 90 km. Furthermore, our 3D wavefield simulations show significantly broadened volumetric sensitivity of the higher-orbit surface waves. These new constraints obtained by our surface wave analyses provide an important opportunity not only to refine and verify our previous radially symmetric models of the planet’s interior structure but also to improve understanding of seismo-tectonic environments on Mars. Here, we summarize our recent effort in the analyses of surface waves on Mars and discuss the inferred crustal property and its global implications.

Destination Earth initiative pursues the implementation of a digital model of the Earth. With the aim to help understand and simulate the evolution and behavior of the Earth system components, to aid in better forecasting the impacts on human system processes, ecosystem processes and their interaction. The current state of the art technologies in numerical computations (HPC), data infrastructures (involving data storage, data access, data analysis), enable the possibility of developing numerical clones mimicking Earth’s geophysical extreme phenomena.A Digital Twin for GEOphysical extremes (DT-GEO),is a new EU project funded under the Horizon Europe programme (2022-2025), with the objective of developing a prototype for a digital twin on geophysical extremes including earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and anthropogenic-induced extreme events. It will enable analyses, forecasts, and responses to “what if” scenarios for natural hazards from their genesis phases and across their temporal and spatial scales. The project consortium brings together world-class computational and data Research Infrastructures (RIs), operational monitoring networks, and leading-edge research and academia partnerships in various fields of geophysics. It mergesthe latest outcomes from other European projects and, Centers of Excellence. DT-GEO will deploy and test 12 Digital Twin Components (DTCs). These will be self-contained entities embedding flagship simulation codes, Artificial Intelligence layers, large volumes of (real-time) data streams from and into data-lakes, data assimilation methodologies, and overarching workflows for deployment and execution of single or coupled DTCs in centralized HPC and virtual cloud computing Ris. The current Martian cratering rate has been determined either from repeated orbital imaging (e.g.[1][2]), or using lunar rates extended to Mars in combination with crater counting [3]. Eight seismic events detected by the NASA InSight seismometer have been confirmed as impacts by orbital imaging [4]. Six of those events are part of the Very High Frequency (VF) group of marsquakes, which consists of 70 events in total. The impact signals are very similar to other VF events, suggesting that more or all VF events could be impact related. The unique characteristics of VF events, such as a long seismic coda interpreted as a result of shallow source in a strongly scattering near-surface layer [5] and their temporal and spatial distributions, are consistent with impact origin.Assuming all high quality VF events are impacts allows us to place a novel constraint on the impact rate on Mars, independent of the formation of easy-to-spot large blast zones, necessary to identify fresh craters in orbital images. We test the compatibility with the existing cratering rate estimates by using two approaches to derive a first seismically constrained impact rate for Mars. First, we use the Gutenberg-Richter law to determine the slope of the VF event magnitude-frequency distribution. The impact rate is derived by applying a relationship between seismic moment and crater diameter [6]. We refine our estimates by extrapolating the detectability of each event using a semi-empirical relationship between crater size and seismic amplitude [6]. We find that both approaches give similar rates, varying slightly depending on the detectability conditions assumed by each method. The cumulative rates N(D≥8m) = 1-4x10-6 /km2/yr are higher than those from previous imaging studies, but consistent with isochron rates [3].The discrepancy with imaging-based rates could indicate that there are impacts which are missed in imagery due to absent blast zones or that are located in unfavourable terrain, unaccounted for in the imaging-based area correction. Tectonic faults are often assumed to slip either slow due to stable, velocity-strengthening frictional behavior, or fast as a result of velocity-weakening friction leading to dynamic (seismic) rupture. As a consequence, velocity-strengthening faults may be regarded as intrinsically stable as they do not spontaneously nucleate seismic events. However, recent laboratory and in-situ experiments of fluid injection challenged such assumptions. Here we present a fully coupled hydro-mechanical fault model in which stable, rate-strengthening frictional behavior is combined with dynamic weakening due to rapid poroelastic effects, allowing unstable (seismic) slip to occur on nominally stable faults. In our numerical experiments, fluid injection reduces the effective normal stress and frictional resistance, thus bringing the fault to failure. The onset of fault failure is controlled by competing mechanisms of shear-induced dilation and shear-enhanced compaction, which cause fault weakening and the propagation of a slow-slip transient from the fluid injection point. When a critical size of the slow slip patch is reached, dynamic rupture eventually nucleates at the slow-slip event front and propagates beyond the fluid pressure perturbed region. Further numerical experiments indicate that, when the fault is critically stressed, the growth of the aseismic patch – prior to dynamic rupture – occurs in a few seconds, whereas at lower stress levels, the aseismic slip phase propagates slowly over hundreds of seconds. These results predict that poroelastic compaction and fluid pressurization can cause the transition from aseismic slow-slip to fast seismic slip and the propagation of dynamic rupture on velocity-strengthening faults. In particular, they demonstrate that compaction-induced fluid pressurization can overcome the initial phase of shear-induced dilatancy, thus allowing the propagation of dynamic rupture in the form of pulse-like pore-pressure waves. The implication that earthquake rupture may nucleate on rate-strengthening faults, presently considered to be nominally stable, requires a re-evaluation of seismic hazard in many areas, particularly in the case of fluid injection in enhanced geothermal systems and CO2 storage.

The crater density on planetary surfaces is used to determine their ages throughout the solar system, which requires a model for the rate of meteorite impacts of different sizes. For craters smaller than 30 meters, this rate has been observed from the generation of new craters in repeated orbital images. For larger craters, the rate was extrapolated from the lunar surface ages, taking into account the atmospheric removal of small craters. It has been observed that both estimates do not match for crater diameters smaller than 30 meters. The NASA InSight seismometer SEIS provided a new independent constraint, when it recorded seismic signals of several impacts during its mission. These confirmed impacts are part of a larger class of marsquakes (Very High Frequency, VF), all of which have characteristics consistent with an impact origin. We show that these VFs are plausibly caused by meteorite impacts and derive the impact rate required to explain their numbers. An empirical scaling relationship is used to convert between seismic moment and crater diameter. We apply area and time corrections to derive a global impact rate and find that the derived rate is 210--290 craters >8m globally per year, consistent with previously published chronology model rates and above the rates derived from freshly imaged craters.

InSight’s seismometers recorded more than 1300 events. Ninety-eight of these, named the low-frequency family, show energy predominantly below 1 Hz down to ∼0.125 Hz. The Marsquake Service identified seismic phases and computed distances for 42 of these marsquakes, 26 of which have backazimuths. Hence, the locations of the majority of low-frequency family events remain undetermined. Here, we use an envelope shape similarity approach to determine event classes and distances, and introduce an alternative method to estimate the backazimuth. In our similarity approach, we use the highest quality marsquakes with well-constrained distance estimates as templates, including the largest event S1222a, and assign distances to marsquakes with relatively high signal-to-noise ratio based on their similarities to the template events. The resulting enhanced catalog allows us to re-evaluate the seismicity of Mars. We find the Valles Marineris region to be more active than initially perceived, where only a single marsquake (S0976a) had previously been located. We relocated two marsquakes using new backazimuth estimates, which had reported distances of ∼90o, in the SW of the Tharsis region, possibly at Olympus Mons. In addition, two marsquakes with little or no S-wave energy have been located in the NE of the Elysium Bulge. Event epicenters in Cerberus Fossae follow a North-South trend due to uncertainties in location, while the fault system is in the NW-SE direction; therefore, these events are re-projected along the observed fault system.

Potential dust avalanches as aftermaths of the seismic event of S1222a detected by the SEIS/InSight seismometer are investigated. Orbital observations emphasize that the area around the estimated location shows rather flat topography with North-South ridge structures. Thermal inertia data attests that the surface is essentially composed of granular materials, including dust. Thus, only a few locations show steep slopes with fragile soil. We investigated the orbital archive and requested targeted locations to assess the avalanche rate in the area and the influence of the M$_{W}^{Ma}$ 4.7, S1222a event. We find an increase in the avalanche rates when thermal inertia is low. We investigate the best location that could explain these avalanche rates from the aftermath ground deformation and discuss the implications in regards to the regional geology.

We report observations of Rayleigh waves that orbit around Mars up to three times following the S1222a marsquake. Averaging these signals, we find the largest amplitude signals at 30 s and 85 s central period, propagating with distinctly different group velocities of 2.9 km/s and 3.8 km/s, respectively. The group velocities constraining the average crustal thickness beneath the great circle path rule out the majority of previous crustal models of Mars that have a >200 kg/m3 density contrast across the dichotomy. We find that the thickness of the martian crust is 42-56 km on average, and thus thicker than the crusts of the Earth and Moon. Together with thermal evolution models, a thick martian crust suggests that the crust must contain 50-70% of the total heat production to explain present-day local melt zones in the interior of Mars.

Seismic recordings made as part of the InSight mission (Banerdt et al., 2020) have shown that Mars’s liquid core is ~27% lighter than pure liquid iron (Irving et al., 2022), implying that it contains considerable quantities of light elements. However, geophysically-constrained core compositions require abundances of the volatile elements H, C, and S that are too high with respect to their cosmochemical availability in the potential building blocks that accreted to form Mars (Khan et al., 2022). Here we show that P-waves diffracted along and traversing the core-mantle boundary of Mars in combination with first principles computations of the thermoelastic properties of liquid Fe-rich alloys (Huang et al., 2022) require the presence of a D’’-like molten silicate layer (Samuel et al., 2021) overlying the liquid core of Mars. To match the elastic properties of the core, this layer must be 145+/-25 km thick, causing a reduction in core radius to 1690+/-50 km and an increase in density to 6.65+/-0.15 g/ccm relative to previous models (Staehler et al., 2021, Duran et al., 2022, Khan et al., 2022, Drilleau et al., 2022, Irving et al., 2022). These new bulk core properties are able to reconcile geophysical- and cosmochemical requirements for the light-element content of the Martian core, which is shown to consist of 86--89 wt% Fe-Ni and 11--14 wt% light elements (S, C, O, and H). The chemical characteristics of such a layer may be revealed by products of Martian magmatism.

The InSight mission collected an astounding seismic dataset from Mars during more than four years (1450 sols) of operation until it was retired on 21 December 2022.The Marsquake Service MQS detected more than 1300 events of seismic origins. Two of these events (S1000a and S1094b) were later confirmed as distant impacts (Figure 1), with magnitudes of MWMa=4.0 and 4.2 and crater diameters of 130 and 150 m, respectively. Finally, the largest marsquake (S1222a, MWMa=4.6) that occurred during InSight's lifetime was recorded on May 4, 2022.Here, we present the current understanding of the Martian seismicity and the different types of events we observed on Mars, based on the data collected over the whole mission.Low-frequency (LF) and broadband (BB)The LF family of events include energy predominantly below 1 Hz. They are similar to teleseismic events observed on Earth, and clear P and S waves are often identified. The hypocenter is known for about half of the recorded LF-BB events, owing to the difficulty of determining back-azimuth and in some cases also distance for the smaller events. The following elements are now understood:Seismicity appears to be located only in few spots around Mars (Figure 2) and no tectonic events were located within 25° from the InSight station. A large number of LF-BB events are located 26–30° from the station, interpreted to be associated with the active dynamics of the volcanic Cerberus Fossae area. A group of events show only a weak S-wave energy and are aligned using the P-wave and length of its coda to around 46°. Their tectonic origin is yet unknown. A few events are located around 60° with relatively emergent P- and S-wave energy. Two large events (S0976a and S1000a) lie beyond the core shadow and have PP and SS phases; S0976a in the Valles Marineris region 146° away from InSight, and S1000a as the result of a meteoritic impact. A number of events of uncertain location are clustered in the same distance, around 100-120° distance. LF events have the largest magnitudes with S1222a reaching MWMa=4.6 and a few others at or above MWMa=3.5. High-frequency (HF) The HF family of events are predominantly at and above the 2.4 Hz, local subsurface resonance. The HF events have magnitudes below MWMa 2.5 and originate from a distance range of 25–30°, likely a single area in the central Cerberus Fossae region, as very shallow events associated to active volcanic dykes. Very high frequency (VF):A small number of HF events are characterized by higher frequency content, up to 20–30 Hz with a notable amplification on the horizontal components at very high frequency, and are termed VF events. The amplification is plausibly explained by the local subsurface structure. These events are observed only close to the lander. Remote imaging of recent craters and the presence of a distinctive acoustic signal confirmed that the closest events were produced by meteoric impacts. Investigations are being conducted to understand if other VF events can be confirmed as impacts, too.

We present the first observations of seismic waves propagating through the core of Mars. These observations, made using seismic data collected by the InSight geophysical mission, have allowed us to construct the first seismically constrained models for the elastic properties of Mars' core. We observe core-transiting seismic phase SKS from two farside seismic events detected on Mars and measure the travel times of SKS relative to mantle traversing body waves. SKS travels through the core as a compressional wave, providing information about bulk modulus and density. We perform probabilistic inversions using the core-sensitive relative travel times together with gross geophysical data and travel times from other, more proximal, seismic events to seek the equation of state parameters that best describe the liquid iron-alloy core. Our inversions provide constraints on the velocities in Mars' core and are used to develop the first seismically based estimates of its composition. We show that models informed by our SKS data favor a somewhat smaller (median core radius = 1,780 to 1,810 km) and denser (core density = 6.2 to 6.3 g/cm3) core compared to previous estimates, with a P-wave velocity of 4.9 to 5.0 km/s at the core-mantle boundary, with the composition and structure of the mantle as a dominant source of uncertainty. We infer from our models that Mars' core contains a median of 20 to 22 wt% light alloying elements when we consider sulfur, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. After ~4 years of deployment on the martian surface monitoring the planet’s ground motion, the InSight seismometer is now retired. Here, we review the procedures and methods the Marsquake Service (MQS) used to curate the seismic event catalog and describe the content of the catalog. The marsquake catalogue is different from normal catalogues on Earth as it aims to provide the authoritative catalog for the mission, covering the entire planet, using only a single station. As of January 1st, 2023, the MQS catalog contains 1319 seismic events of which 6 are known meteorite impacts. We have also identified 1383 superhigh frequency events that are interpreted as thermal cracking nearby the InSight lander. Late in the project large distant events occurred that allowed MQS to detect surface waves. Multiple events have been associated as impacts using orbital imaging, confirming the MQS single station location procedures. All of these new seismic phases have contributed to advance our understanding of the internal structure of Mars. The marsquake S1222a, the largest event recorded during the mission (MW 4.7) occurred in March 2022 and is also documented in our latest MQS catalog, V13, with many associated seismic phases including both Rayleigh and Love waves, their first-order overtones, and multi-orbiting surface waves that have not been identified in other marsquake records from our previous catalogues. The InSight mission is now closed but the MQS operation continues to analyze the ~4 years of seismic recordings on Mars and a final catalog, including event-specific products such as filter banks, and spectra, is in preparation. This final catalog will inform capabilities and field strategies in geophysical explorations for future martian science missions.

In this study we test whether principal components of the strain rate and stress tensors align within Switzerland. We find that 1) Helvetic Nappes line (HNL) is the relevant tectonic boundary to define different domains of crustal stress/surface strain rates orientations and 2) orientations of T- axes (of moment tensor solutions) and long-term asthenosphere cumulative finite strain (from SKS shear wave splitting) are consistent at the scale of the Alpine arc in Switzerland. At a more local scale, we find that seismic activity and surface deformation are in agreement but in three regions (Basel, Swiss Jura and Ticino); possibly because of the low levels of deformation and/or seismicity. In the Basel area, deep seismicity exists while surface deformation is absent. In the Ticino and the Swiss Jura, where seismic activity is close to absent, surface deformation is detected at a level of ~2 10E−8/yr (~6.3 10E−16/s)., Scientific Reports, 8, ISSN:2045-2322

The sealing characteristics of the geological formation located above a CO2 storage reservoir, the so-called caprock, are essential to ensure efficient geological carbon storage. In case CO2 were to leak through the caprock, temporal changes in fluid geochemistry can reveal fundamental information on migration mechanisms and induced fuid-rock interactions. Here, we present the results from a unique in-situ injection experiment, where CO2-enriched fluid was continuously injected in a faulted caprock analogue. Results show that the CO2 migration follows complex path- ways within the fault structure. The joint analysis of noble gases, ion concentrations and carbon isotopes allow us to quantify mixing between injected CO2-enriched fluid and resident formation water and to describe the temporal evolution of water-rock interaction processes. The results presented here are a crucial complement to the geophysical monitoring at the fracture scale highlighting a unique migration of CO2 in fault zones.

Since its deployment at the surface of Mars, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) instrument of the InSight mission has detected hundreds of small-magnitude seismic events. In this work, we highlight some features of two specific families: high-frequency (HF) and very-high-frequency (VF) events. We characterize the shape of the energy envelopes of HF and VF events with two parameters: (1) the delay time td between the onset and the peak of the dominant arrival; and (2) the quality factor Qc, which quantifies the energy decay rate in the coda. We observe that the envelope of HF and VF events is frequency independent. As a consequence, a single delay time suffices to characterize envelope broadening in the 2.5–7.5 Hz band. The typical coda decay time is also frequency independent, as attested by the close to linear increase of Qc with frequency. Finally, we use elastic radiative transfer theory to perform a series of inversion of seismogram envelopes for the attenuation properties of the Martian lithosphere. The good fit between synthetic and observed envelopes confirms that multiple scattering of elastic waves released by internal sources is a plausible explanation of the events characteristics. We quantify scattering and attenuation properties of Mars and highlight the differences and similarities with the Earth and the Moon. The albedo, that is, the contribution of scattering to the total attenuation, derived from VF events is very high, which we interpret as a signature of a mostly dry medium. Our results also suggest a stratification of the scattering and attenuation properties.

NASA's InSight lander successfully touched down on Mars in November 2018, and, for the first time, a seismometer was deployed on the surface of the planet. The seismic recordings reveal diurnal and seasonal changes of the broadband noise level that are consistent with variations of the local atmospheric conditions. The seismic data include a variety of spectral peaks, which are interpreted as wind‐excited, mechanical resonances of the lander, resonances of the subsurface, or artifacts produced in the measurement system. Understanding the origin of these signals is critical for the detection and characterization of marsquakes as well as for studies investigating the ambient noise. We identify the major spectral peaks up to 9 Hz, corresponding to the frequency range the most relevant to observed marsquakes. We track the variations in frequency, amplitude, and polarization of these peaks over the duration of the mission so far. The majority of these peaks can readily be classified as measurement artifacts or lander resonances (lander modes), of which the latter have a temperature‐dependent peak frequency and a wind‐sensitive amplitude. Of particular interest is a prominent resonance at 2.4 Hz, which is used to discriminate between seismic events and local noise and is possibly produced by a subsurface structure. In contrast to the lander modes, the 2.4 Hz resonance has distinctly different features: (1) a broad and stable spectral shape, slightly shifted on each component; (2) predominantly vertical energy; (3) temperature‐independent peak frequency; (4) comparatively weak amplification by local winds, though there is a slow change in the diurnal and seasonal amplitude; and (5) excitation during all seismic events that excite this frequency band. NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) seismometer has been recording Martian seismicity since early 2019, and to date, over 1,300 marsquakes have been cataloged by the Marsquake Service (MQS). Due to typically low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of marsquakes, their detection and analysis remain challenging: while event amplitudes are relatively low, the background noise has large diurnal and seasonal variations and contains various signals originating from the interactions of the local atmosphere with the lander and seismometer system. Since noise can resemble marsquakes in a number of ways, the use of conventional detection methods for catalog curation is limited. Instead, MQS finds events through manual data inspection. Here, we present MarsQuakeNet (MQNet), a deep convolutional neural network for the detection of marsquakes and the removal of noise contamination. Based on three-component seismic data, MQNet predicts segmentation masks that identify and separate event and noise energy in time-frequency domain. As the number of cataloged MQS events is small, we combine synthetic event waveforms with recorded noise to generate a training data set. We apply MQNet to the entire continuous 20 samples-per-second waveform data set available to date (>1,000 Martian days), for automatic event detection and for retrieving denoised amplitudes. The algorithm reproduces all high quality, as well as majority of low quality events in the manual, carefully curated MQS catalog. Furthermore, MQNet detects ∼60% additional events that were previously unknown with mostly low SNR, that are verified in manual review. Constraining the thermal and compositional state of the mantle is crucial for deciphering the formation and evolution of Mars. Mineral physics predicts that Mars' deep mantle is demarcated by a seismic discontinuity arising from the pressure-induced phase transformation of the mineral olivine to its higher-pressure polymorphs, making the depth of this boundary sensitive to both mantle temperature and composition. Here, we report on the seismic detection of a midmantle discontinuity using the data collected by NASA's InSight Mission to Mars that matches the expected depth and sharpness of the postolivine transition. In five teleseismic events, we observed triplicated P and S waves and constrained the depth of this discontinuity to be 1,006 [Formula: see text] 40 km by modeling the triplicated waveforms. From this depth range, we infer a mantle potential temperature of 1,605 [Formula: see text] 100 K, a result consistent with a crust that is 10 to 15 times more enriched in heat-producing elements than the underlying mantle. Our waveform fits to the data indicate a broad gradient across the boundary, implying that the Martian mantle is more enriched in iron compared to Earth. Through modeling of thermochemical evolution of Mars, we observe that only two out of the five proposed composition models are compatible with the observed boundary depth. Our geodynamic simulations suggest that the Martian mantle was relatively cold 4.5 Gyr ago (1,720 to 1,860 K) and are consistent with a present-day surface heat flow of 21 to 24 mW/m2., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 119 (42), ISSN:0027-8424, ISSN:1091-6490

The Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies (BULGG) is located in central Switzerland and serves as a test bed for geothermal energy research. Several boreholes were drilled from the laboratory section (ca. 1.1 km overburden) to serve as injection boreholes for stimulation and geophysical monitoring boreholes. During a hydraulic stimulation injection in winter 2020 into injection borehole ST2 interval ranging from 313 to 320 m, we observe a thermal perturbation using distributed fiber optic temperature sensing in a neighboring open borehole (MB1) at a depth of 275 m to 295 m. Prior to injection, there is a thermal anomaly in MB1 at about 289 m due to natural fracture fluid flow. Below this depth the temperature is approximately 1.5 °C higher than above. During injection there is a gradual upward movement of the thermal anomaly to ca. 278 m depth. After injection is stopped, the thermal signal gradually recovers to the original depth. The cause for such a temperature change is potentially due to increased warm water flow reaching the base of MB1 from deeper ST2 or poro-elastic fracture closure of the cold-water conducting fractures at 278 and 289 m depth in MB1 during stimulation.

The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) mission has been collecting high-quality seismic data on Mars for over 1200 Martian solar days (sols), providing the first direct observations of its interior structure. In this study, we report on a complete analysis of low-frequency (LF) seismic evens (main energy below 1 Hz), that have proven essential for understanding the deep interior of Mars [1], [3]-[5]. As Martian seismograms are generally characterized by a low signal-to-noise ratio and strong scattering, data selection and processing is central for the identification and consistent picking of body-wave arrivals. To this end, we employ complementary approaches, including: 1) narrow-band-filtered time-domain envelopes; 2) polarised waveforms and their time-domain envelopes; 3) polarisation analysis; and 4) waveform matching. An example of the application of the first two approaches to identify body-wave arrivals is shown in Fig 1. The careful application of this 4-step processing scheme to each LF event has resulted in a significant increase in body wave phase picks, encompassing direct, reflected, and converted body waves, relative to earlier analyses [1]. With our method, all phases are obtained through iterative refinement, which relies on inverting an initial set of phase picks for models of interior structure, event distance, and depth, while predicting travel times for additional seismic phases. Based on the predictions, we re-pick (every pick is subject to our 4-step processing scheme), thereby enlarging our differential travel-time data set (all picks are relative to the main P- or PP-wave arrival), and subsequently re-invert for an updated set of interior structure models, event distances, and depths. Through application of iterative refinement to new seismic data, we continuously update information on radial velocity models of the crust, mantle, and core, as well as source parameters, and phase picks. The recent identification of the most distant marsquakes recorded by the InSight mission and the first core-diffracted P-wave [2] allows constraints on the P-wave velocity structure of the lower mantle (see distant event in Fig 2) that hitherto could not be constrained because of lack of lower-mantle-traversing P-waves. In addition, on sol 1222, InSight detected the largest event ever recorded on Mars, providing a unique opportunity to understand the interior of Mars through the identification of waves that could not be identified in earlier events because of their low signal-to-noise ratio. Our iterative refinement procedure demonstrates that through continued analysis of new events, our knowledge and understanding of the interior of Mars will steadily improve. Seismic measurements of the InSight lander confirm tectonic activity in an extraterrestrial geological system for the first time: the large graben system Cerberus Fossae (Giardini et al., 2020). In-depth analysis of available marsquakes thus allows unprecedented geophysical characterization of an active extensional structure on Mars, using the epicenter locations, depths, magnitudes, focal mechanisms and spectral character from marsquake data. In summary, InSight seismic data show: Both major families of marsquakes, characterized by low and high frequency content, LF and HF events respectively, can be located on central and eastern parts of the graben system (Zenhäusern et al., 2022). This is in agreement with the decrease in structural maturity towards the East as inferred from orbital images (Perrin et al., 2022). Specifically, we find that the distance distribution of the larger LF marsquakes peaks near Zunil crater and the Cerberus Mantling Unit, which has been hypothesized to be of volcanic origin (Horvath et al., 2021). The two event families correspond to two depth regimes: LF marsquake hypocenters are located at about 15-50 km, based on identification of depth phases (Durán et al., 2022; Stähler et al., 2021), while the HF marsquakes are likely much shallower and at 0-5 km depth (van Driel et al., 2021). Estimated magnitudes are between 2.8 and 3.8 (Böse et al., 2021; Clinton et al., 2021), resulting in a total seismic moment release within Cerberus Fossae of 1.4-5.6×1015 Nm/yr, or at least half of the observed seismic moment release of the entire planet. Estimated focal mechanisms of deep marsquakes (Brinkman et al., 2021; Jacob et al., 2022) show primarily extensional normal faulting, compatible with the image-based interpretation as a graben system. The deeper LF marsquakes are “slow” compared to terrestrial quakes, i.e. lack high frequency energy in the seismic body waves. This can be explained by low stress drop and a weak, potentially warm source region. We propose a geological model that integrates these observations: The deep LF quakes are caused by the large-scale extensional stress pattern, while fractures occur in this specific location only due to the presence of a dike from Elysium Mons. The shallow seismicity is caused in a brittle region near the surface, potentially on the subsurface continuation of the graben flanks. This could potentially explain the seasonality of the HF event rate, which peaks at the times of maximum solar illumination of the bottom in the Cerberus Fossae (Knapmeyer et al., 2021). While a small number of large endogenic marsquakes have been observed in other regions on Mars, specifically Southern Tharsis (Horleston et al., 2022), Cerberus Fossae represents a uniquely active seismic setting. Current day tectonic activity seems to be driven by volcanic processes, and furthermore, we find no trace of seismic activity on compressional thrust faults on Mars, as opposed to the models of seismicity driven by secular cooling and lithospheric contraction. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), which is currently under construction, is designed to measure gravitational wave signals in the milli-Hertz frequency band. It is expected that tens of millions of Galactic binaries will be the dominant sources of observed gravitational waves. The Galactic binaries producing signals at mHz frequency range emit quasi monochromatic gravitational waves, which will be constantly measured by LISA. To resolve as many Galactic binaries as possible is a central challenge of the upcoming LISA data set analysis. Although it is estimated that tens of thousands of these overlapping gravitational wave signals are resolvable, and the rest blurs into a galactic foreground noise; extracting tens of thousands of signals using Bayesian approaches is still computationally expensive. We developed a new end-to-end pipeline using Gaussian Process Regression to model the log-likelihood function in order to rapidly compute Bayesian posterior distributions. Using the pipeline we are able to solve the Lisa Data Challenge (LDC) 1-3 consisting of noisy data as well as additional challenges with overlapping signals and particularly faint signals., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Seismic wave propagation is intrinsically a process in time and space. Although seismometers make point measurements only, dense, large-aperture seismic networks allow the full observation and analysis of wave propagation. We present a new visual representation of teleseismic phases by combining time-dependent ground-motion visualizations with array analyses to connect the time-domain motion with phase information retrieved from the frequency–wavenumber (f-k) domain. This serves as an educational tool, but also for efficient identification of off-angle arrivals, dispersion, and anomalous seismic phases. The processing is applied to events with Mw≥7 observed at the AlpArray Seismic Network in Europe and two example teleseismic events are discussed in detail.

International audience; Meteoroid impacts shape planetary surfaces by forming new craters and alter atmospheric composition. During atmospheric entry and impact on the ground, meteoroids excite transient acoustic and seismic waves. However, new crater formation and the associated impact-induced mechanical waves have yet to be observed jointly beyond Earth. Here we report observations of seismic and acoustic waves from the NASA InSight lander’s seismometer that we link to four meteoroid impact events on Mars observed in spacecraft imagery. We analysed arrival times and polarization of seismic and acoustic waves to estimate impact locations, which were subsequently confirmed by orbital imaging of the associated craters. Crater dimensions and estimates of meteoroid trajectories are consistent with waveform modelling of the recorded seismograms. With identified seismic sources, the seismic waves can be used to constrain the structure of the Martian interior, corroborating previous crustal structure models, and constrain scaling relationships between the distance and amplitude of impact-generated seismic waves on Mars, supporting a link between the seismic moment of impacts and the vertical impactor momentum. Our findings demonstrate the capability of planetary seismology to identify impact-generated seismic sources and constrain both impact processes and planetary interiors.

Carbon capture and storage in geological reservoirs is essential to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, but is only effective if long-term storage is ensured and no leakage occurs, for example through unknown faults in the caprock that seals the reservoir. To test how the integrity of a caprock can be monitored non-invasively, we conducted an injection experiment directly into a faulted caprock analog at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory. We monitored the experiment using active seismic techniques, along with strain, fluid pressure, and microseismicity measurements. Pulse injection with pressures of up to 4.8 MPa caused a perturbation of effective stress, which we observed through a reduction of seismic P-wave velocities by around 1 %. This perturbation was not sensed by means of microseismicity, even though a sudden pressure drop indicated that the injection caused the opening of some fractures within the fault zone. Substantial rock deformation was also only detected at the injection borehole but not in surrounding monitoring boreholes. Thus, with seismic velocity monitoring, processes can be detected within a faulted caprock for which other methods may be blind. The InSight mission has measured Mars' seismicity since February 2018 and has allowed to investigate tectonics on another planet. Seismic data shows that most of the widely distributed surface faults are not seismically active, and that seismicity is mostly originating from a single graben structure, the Cerberus Fossae. LF hypocenters are located at 15-50 km depth and the spectral character suggests a structurally weak, potentially warm source region consistent with recent volcanic activity at those depths.
