Abstract

Mitochondria contain many large multisubunit enzyme complexes comprising proteins encoding in nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. Expression of respective mitochondrial and nuclear genes must be coordinated for correct assembly of such enzyme complexes. Mitochondrial promoters in dicot plants were analyzed to determine the respective transcription signals.

Abstract

Background: Qualitative studies investigating weight management experiences are usually cross‐sectional or of short duration, which limits understanding of the long‐term challenges. Methods: Eleven women [mean (SD) age 44.9 (9.8) years; body mass index 40.3 (4.0) kg m−2] participated in this longitudinal qualitative study, which included up to 20 weeks of total diet replacement (825–853 kcal day−1) and ongoing support for weight loss maintenance (WLM), to 2 years. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted at baseline and programme end, as well as at key intervals during the intervention. Questions examined five theoretical themes: motivation, self‐regulation, habits, psychological resources and social/environmental influences. Data were coded and analysed in nvivo (https://qsrinternational.com/nvivo) using the framework method. Results: In total, 64 interviews were completed (median, n = 6 per participant). Mean (SD) weight loss was 15.7 (9.6) kg (14.6% body weight) at 6 months and 9.6 (9.9) kg (8.8% body weight) at 2 years. The prespecified theoretical model offered a useful framework to capture the variability of experiences. Negative aspects of obesity were strong motivations for weight loss and maintenance. Perceiving new routines as sustainable and developing a 'maintenance mindset' was characteristic of 'Maintainers', whereas meeting emotional needs at the expense of WLM goals during periods of stress and negative mood states was reported more often by 'Regainers'. Optimistic beliefs about maintaining weight losses appeared to interfere with barrier identification and coping planning for most participants. Conclusions: People tended to be very optimistic about WLM without acknowledging barriers and this may undermine longer‐term outcomes. The potential for regain remained over time, mainly as a result of emotion‐triggered eating to alleviate stress and negative feelings. More active self‐regulation during these circumstances may improve WLM, and these situations represent important targets for intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Behaviour change interventions are effective in supporting individuals to achieve clinically significant weight loss, but weight loss maintenance (WLM) is less often attained. This study examined predictive variables associated with WLM. Design: N-of-1 study with daily ecological momentary assessment combined with objective measurement of weight and physical activity, collected with wireless devices (Fitbit™) for six months. Eight previously obese adults who had lost over 5% of their body weight in the past year took part. Data were analysed using time series methods. Main outcomes measures: Predictor variables were based on five theoretical themes: maintenance motives, self-regulation, personal resources, habits, and environmental influences. Dependent variables were: objectively estimated step count and weight, and self-reported WLM plan adherence. Results: For all participants, daily fluctuations in self-reported adherence to their WLM plan were significantly associated with most of the explanatory variables, including maintenance motivation and satisfaction with outcomes, self-regulation, habit, and stable environment. Personal resources were not a consistent predictor of plan adherence. Conclusion: This is the first study to assess theoretical predictions of WLM within individuals. WLM is a dynamic process including the interplay of motivation, self-regulation, habit, resources, and perceptions of environmental context. Individuals maintaining their weight have unique psychological profiles which could be accounted for in interventions.

Abstract

After weight loss, most individuals regain lost weight. Interventions to support the transition from successful loss to weight loss maintenance (WLM), regardless of the method of prior weight loss, are needed. The aims of this study were to (1) develop a face-to-face behavioural intervention session to support overweight and obese individuals who have recently lost a clinically significant amount of weight in the transition to WLM; (2) to assess the single-session intervention for acceptability and feasibility prior to its use in a larger, 12-month, multi-component trial; and (3) to optimise the intervention session for future use based on participant feedback. Participants with a Body Mass Index of ≥25 kg/m2 prior to a ≥5% weight loss in the previous 12 months were recruited via the local government authority and community-based advertisements. Each attended the one-hour session with a trained facilitator, which focused on setting maintenance-relevant weight, eating, and physical activity goals. Semi-structured interviews were carried out immediately post-session to obtain feedback on the acceptability of this intervention component. Data were used to generate recommendations for changes to the session, which were discussed by the team, and used to optimise the session. Seventeen participants (13 female; median WL = 13%) were recruited.All participants evaluated the intervention session positively; 11 participants suggested improvements including reducing information provision in favour of greater focus on identifying and coping with barriers, and the inclusion of practical examples. The systematic refinement and optimisation process resulted in an acceptable and feasible face-to-face behavioural intervention session (described here), which will be tested as part of a multi-component intervention. Abstract

Using a 73.6 pb-1 data sample of Y(2S) events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have investigated the hadronic transitions between the Y(2S) and the Y(1S). The dipion transition Y(2S)→Y(1S)π+π was studied using two different analysis techniques. Selecting events in which Y(1S)→e+e-,μ+μ- ("exclusive" analysis), and using the Y(1S) leptonic branching fractions world averages from the PDG review, we obtained B(Y(2S)→Y(1S)π+π-) = 0.189±0.004±0.010, while using a method allowing Y(1S)→anything ("inclusive" analysis) we obtained B(Y(2S)→Y(1S)π+π- = 0.196 ±0.002±0.010. The appropriate weighted average of the two measurements gives B(Y(2S) →Y(1S)μ+μ-) = 0.192±0.002±0.010. Combining the exclusive and inclusive results we derive the Y(1S) leptonic branching fractions Bee = 0.0229±0.0008±0.0011 and Bμμ = 0.0249±0.0008±0.0013. We also studied Y(2S)→Y(1S)π0π0 and obtained B(Y(2S)→Y(1S)π0π0) = 0.092±0.006±0.008. Parameters of the ππ system (dipion invariant mass spectra, angular distributions) were analyzed and found to be consistent with current theoretical models. Lastly, we searched for the η and single π0 transitions and obtained the 90% confidence level upper limits B(Y(2S)→Y(1S)η)

Abstract

Using 13.7 fb(-1) of data recorded by the CLEO detector at Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report evidence of two new charmed baryons: one decaying into Xi(0')(c)pi(+) with the subsequent decay Xi(0')(c)-->Xi(0)(c)gamma, and its isospin partner decaying into Xi(+')(c)pi(-) followed by Xi(+')(c)-->Xi(+)(c)gamma. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: M(Xi(0)(c)gammapi(+))-M(Xi(0)(c)) = 318.2+/-1.3+/-2.9 MeV and M(Xi(+)(c)gammapi(-))-M(Xi(+)(c)) = 324.0+/-1.3+/-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the J(P) = 1 / 2(-) Xi(c1) particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the Lambda(+)(c1)(2593).

45. Two-body B meson decays to η and η′: Observation of B → η′K

Abstract

In a sample of 6.6 × 106 produced B mesons we have observed decays B → η′K, with branching fractions B(B+ → η′K+) = (6.5-1.4+1.5 ± 0.9) × 10-5 and B(B0 → η′K0) = (4.7-2.0+2.7 ± 0.9) × 10-5. We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B → η′K signal.

46. Hadronic structure in the decay τ-→ντπ-π 0π0 and the sign of the tau neutrino helicity

Abstract

Based on a sample corresponding to 4.3×106 produced τ-pair events, we have studied hadronic dynamics in the decay τ-→ντπ-π 0π0 in data recorded by the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider. The decay is dominated by the process τ-→ντa1-(1260), with the a1- meson decaying to three pions predominantly via the lowest dimensional (mainly S-wave) ρ-π0 Born amplitude. From model-dependent fits to the Dalitz plot and angular observables in bins of 3 π mass, we find significant additional contributions from amplitudes for a1 decay to σπ, f0(1370)π, and f2(1270)π, as well as higher dimensional a1→ρπ and ρ′ π amplitudes. Notably, the squared σπ amplitude accounts for approximately 15% of the total τ- →ντπ-π0π0 rate in the models considered. The data are well described using couplings to these amplitudes that are independent of the 3π mass. These amplitudes also provide a good description for the τ- →ντπ-π0π0 Dalitz plot distributions. We have searched for additional contributions from τ-→ντπ′ -(1300). We place 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fraction for this channel of between 1.0×10-4 and 1.9×10-4, depending on the π′ decay mode considered. The π-π0π0 mass spectrum is parametrized by a Breit-Wigner form with a mass-dependent width which is specified according to the results of the Dalitz plot fits plus an unknown coupling to an a1→K*K amplitude. From a χ2 fit using this parametrization, we extract the pole mass and width of the a1, as well as the magnitude of the K*K coupling. We have also investigated the impact of a possible contribution from the a1′(1700) meson on this spectrum. Finally, exploiting the parity-violating angular asymmetry in a1→3π decay, we determine the signed value of the τ neutrino helicity to be hντ=-1.02±0.13 (stat)±0.03 (syst+model), confirming the left-handedness of the τ neutrino. ©1999 The American Physical Society.
