1. Catalysis of Transmutations by Heavy Electron Quasiparticles in Crystallites

Abstract

This article describes our hypothesis on how transmutations may be induced by solid state effects in a crystalline lattice. We discuss the chemical reaction case, our extension to the nuclear binding case, and a tri-body model of a heavy electron quasiparticle catalyzing the binding of two nearby ions. For a given primary reaction we can estimate the required electron mass threshold m*, identify possible reaction products, estimate tunneling probabilities, and calculate energies available for each path. We compare model predictions with experimental data of transmutations, and consider hazards associated with experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures

2. Using Socioscientific Issues in Primary Classrooms

Abstract

In this article, we provide three examples of the use of socioscientific issues (SSI) in a 5th-grade classroom. Taken from Earth science (beach sand replacement), life science (the Canadian seal hunt), and physical science (speed limits), the examples show how teachers can embed scientific content in controversial social issues that engage younger students in constructive sociomoral discourse. Each example includes a preliminary learning activity as well as a description of the SSI scenario and its results. The potential of SSI to inspire preservice elementary science methods students to teach more science and create their own modules is also discussed. (Contains 1 table.)

3. Direct charge ejection for chemical electric generation

Abstract

A particular type of surface chemical reaction resulted in direct charge ejection. Several different experimental observations strongly support the hypothesis that nearly all of the molecular kinetic energy of a highly excited vibrating molecule was transferred to the kinetic energy of a single electron in a conducting lattice, leaving the molecule in nearly its ground state. This kinetic energy transfer represents the counterpart to the potential energy transfer in a battery, where electrochemical potential energy of reactants is transferred to the electrical potential energy of a separated charge. Here chemical reaction energy is transferred directly to the kinetic energy of a charge instead of to the potential energy of a charge. These observations indicate a breakdown of the Born Oppenheimer approximation., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Previous research examining the tendency for sports spectators to internalize team successes while externalizing team failures has been inconsistent. Several studies have found support for this success/failure attributional bias, but others have not. The current study tested the hypothesis that the success/failure bias would be found among American spectators who were high in identification with a target team but that spectators low in identification would be only minimally biased in their attributions concerning competition outcome. Abstract

This is a report of a study designed to test the prediction that persons high in identification with a sports team would be more biased in their evaluations of that team than persons low in identification. The hypothesis was supported for memory and predictions of team records as well as for direct measures of past, present, and future team evaluations. Discussion focussed on the motivational processes underlying the relationship.
