Bearings fabricated by powder metallurgy developed for use in machines subjected to extremes of temperature, rolling-contact cyclic stresses, and oxidizing or otherwise corrosive fluids. Bearings also extend operating lives of other machines in which bearings required to resist extreme thermal, mechanical, and chemical stresses. One alloy exhibiting outstanding properties was MRC-2001. Resistance to fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and wear found superior to that of 440C stainless steel.

Traditionally, vacuum melted 440C stainless steel is used for high performance bearings for aerospace cryogenic systems where corrosion due to condensation is a major concern. For the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), however, 440C performance in the high-pressure turbopumps has been marginal. A basic assumption of this study was that powder metallurgy, rather than cast/wrought, processing would provide the finest, most homogeneous bearing alloy structure. Preliminary testing of P/M alloys (hardness, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, fatigue resistance, and fracture toughness) was used to 'de-select' alloys which did perform as well as baseline 440C. Five out of eleven candidate materials (14-4/6V, X-405, MRC-2001, T-440V, and D-5) based on preliminary screening were selected for the actual rolling-sliding five-ball testing. The results of this test were compared with high-performance vacuum-melted M50 bearing steel. The results of the testing indicated outstanding performance of two P/M alloys, X-405 and MRC-2001, which eventually will be further evaluated by full-scale bearing testing.

A full scale High Pressure Oxidizer Turbopump (HPOTP) bearing tester has been developed, and an existing test stand modified, to simulate turbopump operating conditions for Space Shuttle Main Engine HPOTP design. Following a description of test facilities and procedures, design certification and calibration tests, and tests at a moderate axial load, are discussed. Results show that a bearing life of about 4500 seconds is comparable to the life experienced in the engine pump at nominal high power level operating conditions, and that although increased coolant flow increased fluid viscous work and bearing loads, a net decrease in bearing temperature was noted. Increased coolant flow is found to improve bearing cooling for marginal conditions, and bearing temperatures are shown to become more sensitive to coolant flow as shaft speed is increased. For the 6.4 lbs/s test conditions, the heat generated in a bearing pair is determined to be about 67 percent viscous work and 33 percent contact friction.

The resistance of copper and TiN coatings on various bearing substrates to high-load rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is investigated. Special attention is given to the lubricating characteristics of copper deposited by ion plating, and the wear resistant characteristics of TiN deposited by ion plating and magnetron sputtering techniques. RCF samples of 440C and AMS 5749 bearing steels were coated. Sputter deposited and ion plated films were on the RCF samples in a range of thickness from about 2000 A to 2 microns. Results showed a marked improvement of the RCF for pure copper tested on 440C, but a degradation for copper on AMS 5749. It is also found that the 2000 A TiN films behave favorably on the 440C and AMS 5749 bearing steels at RCF stress levels of 786 ksi. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis were used during the investigation.

The operating life of grease-type lubricants in various environments is evaluated. The test equipment and procedures are described. The lubricants were placed in the rolling element bearings of hysteresis synchronous motors and exposed to environments of a vacuum at 60 C, a vacuum at 93.3 C, 10 psia oxygen at 90 percent relative humidity at 60 C, 14.7 psia air at 90 percent relative humidity at 60 C, start-stop operation, and low temperature start capability for one or five years. The weights of the bearings were measured before and after lubrication; the weight data for each environment are analyzed. The data reveal that the high viscosity index perfluoroalkypolyether grease performs the best in a vacuum at moderate and high temperature, in low temperature start capability, and in start-stop steps; however, the grease does not work well in oxidizing and high relative humidity environments.

The past performance analysis conducted on three High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump (HPOTP) bearings from the Space Shuttle Main Engine is presented. Metallurgical analysis of failed bearing balls and races, and wear track and crack configuration analyses were carried out. In addition, one bearing was tested in laboratory at very high axial loads. The results showed that the cracks were surface initiated and propagated into subsurface locations at relatively small angles. Subsurface cracks were much more extensive than was appeared on the surface. The location of major cracks in the races corresponded to high radial loads rather than high axial loads. There was evidence to suggest that the inner races were heated to elevated temperatures. A failure scenario was developed based on the above findings. According to this scenario the HPOTP bearings are heated by a combination of high loads and high coefficient of friction (poor lubrication). Different methods of extending the HPOTP bearing life are also discussed. These include reduction of axial loads, improvements in bearing design, lubrication and cooling, and use of improved bearing materials.

Portable, recirculating-water-flow, and temperature-control device is used with solar simulator and actual sunlight to test and evaluate several solar-collector panel coatings, panel designs, and scaled-down collector subsystems. System can be pressurized to prevent boiling and allows operation above 100 degrees Centigrade.

An experimental apparatus was constructed and utilized in conjunction with both a solar simulator and actual sunlight to test and evaluate various solar panel coatings, panel designs, and scaled-down collector subsystems. Data were taken by an automatic digital data acquisition system and reduced and printed by a computer system. The solar collector test setup, data acquisition system, and data reduction and printout systems were considered to have operated very satisfactorily. Test data indicated that there is a practical or useful limit in scaling down beyond which scaled-down testing cannot produce results comparable to results of larger scale tests. Test data are presented as are schematics and pictures of test equipment and test hardware.
