Abstract

At the summit of Mt. Fuji in July and August from 2012 to 2018, 27 kinds of anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) and 6 types of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in the air and in cloud water were determined. AVOCs occupied about 90％ of the VOCs in the cloud water (volume-weighted mean VOCs concentration: 2.07 nM, n＝159) and the main component was toluene, reflecting its high concentration in the ambient air. The concentration of the AVOCs in the cloud water was high when the airmass was transported from the southern continent and was about 1.5 times higher than that when it came from the ocean. The concentration of toluene in the cloud water decreased exponentially with the increase in the total ion concentration. The concentrations of some VOCs such as chloroform, o-xylene, and limonen in the cloud water were several times higher than their Henryʼs law predicted values. Among the chlorinated hydrocarbons, highly hydrophobic chloroform was more concentrated than dichloromethane in the cloud water. Atmospheric surfactants such as HULIS (Humic-like Substances) could affect the enrichment of the VOCs in the cloud water even in the free troposphere., 2010年から2018年までの7月と8月に富士山頂（標高3,776 m）で大気および雲水を採取して、27種類の人為起源揮発性有機化合物 (AVOCs) （塩素化炭化水素16種、単環芳香族炭化水素8種、二環芳香族炭化水素3種）と6種類の生物起源揮発性有機化合物を分析した。雲水中VOCs （体積加重平均VOCs濃度： 2.07 nM、n＝159）の約9割はAVOCsであり、主成分はトルエンであった。これは富士山頂における大気中トルエン濃度が高いことを反映していた。雲水中AVOCs濃度は空気塊が大陸南部から輸送されたときに高く、最低濃度を示した海洋由来時の約1.5倍であった。雲水中トルエン濃度は総無機イオンの低下とともに指数関数的に減少した。雲水中クロロホルム、o-キシレン、リモネン濃度は大気中濃度とヘンリー定数から求めた計算値に比べて実測値は数倍高く、ヘンリー則からの予測値以上に濃縮されていた。疎水性が高いVOCsほど雲水に高濃縮されており、自由対流圏における雲水でもHULIS （フミン様物質）のような界面活性物質がVOCsの高濃縮に関与していることが示唆された。

42. Loss of Trace Elements From Natural Water During Storage 2. Behavior of 203HgCl2, CH3203HgCl and 65ZnCl2 Added to Marine Water

Abstract

Dilute solutions (10-50 ppb) of mercury and zinc are prepared using artificial marine water and natural marine water, labelled with 203Hg and 65Zn.203Hg in inorganic form is lost considerably from both solutions caused by vaporization to the atomosphere and presumably by adsorption to the surface of containers. In natural marine water some biological activities participate for the behavior of both metals but it seems to be in smaller extent than that in pond water. 65Zn remained constant with no loss under these experimental conditions.When CH3203HgC1 is added to the solution instead of 203HgC12, 203Hg is scarcely lost but a smaller amount is observed to be lost by vaporization from well-test tubes. In natural marine water, however, CH3203HgC1 is also lost in the similar manner as 203HgC12.

Dilute solution (1 ppb-1 ppm) of inorganic mercury and zinc are prepared using distilled water and pond water, labelled with 203Hg and 65Zn.203Hg is lost rapidly from distilled water caused by adsorption to the surface of containers and vaporization to the atomosphere. In pond water some biological activity additionally participates the loss. In 65Zn solution, the biological activity alone is the main cause of loss from the solution. Some preservatives are examined.

44. Japanese Tea Leaves: A Possible Biological Standard Reference Material

Abstract

Japanese Tea Leaves, prepared by pulverizing with an agate ball mill and sieving with a Saran fiber sieve (50 mesh) were assessed as a possible biological standard reference material for elemental analysis. The metal content of the tea leaves was determined independently at two laboratories using atomic absorption and flame emission spectrometry. Neutron activation analysis was also performed to determine the content (21 elements) of Tea Leaves. For some elements the result from the various methods were compared. The characteristics of Tea Leaves are discussed and the elemental composition is compared to that of Orchard Leaves (NBS SRM, 1571). The most significant characteristic of Tea Leaves was the high manganese content.

45. Ion Chromatographic Determination of Ammonium Ion in Rain and Snow Samples

Abstract

Ion chromatographic determination of ammonium ion using a non-suppressor-type ion chromatographic apparatus was applied to the rain and snow samples. Analytical conditions, including the concentration of eluent and the pH of the sample solutions, were examined to achieve the maximum sensitivity. The recovery of the amount added to the actual rain sample was found to be 95-105%. Comparison with the spectrophoto-metric determination using indophenol was also done with sufficient reliability for a field method. Each event rain sample at Tsukuba Science City, Japan, during 1984 was used for this determination. The seasonal variation of the concentration of ammonium ion was obtained. Vertical differences of the concentration of ammonium ion in the deposition sample of 1985 were also studied using the Meteorological Observation Tower (213 m).

46. Chemical components in the precipitation at Komoro and Tsukuba, Japan in 1983

Abstract

In order to know the net deposition of major chemical components by precipitaion in the Honshu Island of Japan, each event rain was sampled for one year in 1983 at two sites; Komoro City, an inland city and Tsukuba Science City, which was located in the Pacific side. Both sampling sites were at the similar latitude and rural area of similar populations. The concentrations of hydrogen ion, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium ions were determined in each rain and summarized in the monthly basis. The concentrations of hydrogen, sulfate and nitrate ions were several times higher at Tsukuba than at Koraoro. The average pH at Tsukuba and Komoro were 4.54 and 5.34, respectively, the former apparently influenced by the polluted air from the industrial area including Tokyo and the latter comparatively free from it. Some discussions were done for the identification of sources for each chemical component.

Abstract

The daily airborne particles of the surface air at Tsukuba Science City, Japan were collected for one year in 1982. The seasonal variation of the concentration of each chemical component as well as its distribution in the particles of various sizes (< 1.6 μm, 1.6-3.7 μm 1, 3.7-8 μm, 8-18 μm and > 18 μm) was observed. Sulfate, lead and zinc mainly distributed in the smallest particles throughout the year. Chloride and nitrate were higher in the smaller particles in winter and higher in the larger particles in summer. Some discussions were done on the distiribution of these components, considering their sources and the meteorological condistions.

48. Determination of Bismuth in Environmental Samples by Hydride Generation-Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Abstract

The determination of trace amounts of bismuth in environmental samples was investigated by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry. For a simpler procedure, an argon-hydrogen flame was used instead of the graphite furnace originally proposed by Lee. Under the analytical conditions proposed here, the detection limit was 1 ng as bismuth (S/N=2) and the precision was 1.5% (n=7). Analytical results are presented for sediments, seawater, and some standard reference materials.
