箱庭療法において砂は中心的な道具立てだが，事例研究や実験研究の中で，実際にどのような砂がどのように使い分けられているかといったことは必ずしも明確でない。これは箱庭に関して得られた知恵や知見の適用範囲を狭めてしまう恐れがある。そこで本研究では，①箱庭療法において用いられている砂に関するデータの蓄積，②砂に対する心理臨床家の態度や現実的制約の把握のために，21名の心理臨床家に質問紙調査を行った。その結果，購入した砂が10，自然から採取した砂が6 ，入手経路の不明が6 あった。砂の選択には，経済的理由，衛生的理由，簡便さなどの影響が大きい一方，心理臨床家は触り心地のよい砂を求めていた。“サラサラ”で，情緒的な温もりを想起させる質感が，“自然”と感じられる砂の特徴である可能性が示唆された。砂に対する心理臨床家の体験や態度，期待は，砂の選択や，クライエントの砂の使い方や表現の幅などに違いを生む可能性が示唆された。そこから，こうした技法以前の領域を意識して箱庭療法を行うことが重要であり，研究においても，どのような砂であるか，その砂を心理臨床家や研究者がどのように捉えているかを加味する必要があると述べた。, Although sand is the core material in sandplay therapy, the type of sand used is not necessarily defined and has not been distinguished in case studies and experimental research. This problem may narrow the application of the knowledge obtained from such studies. A questionnaire was administered to 21 clinical psychologists, aiming to accumulate data about the sand used in sandplay therapy and to clarify constraints and attitudes of the clinical psychologists towards sand. Ten of the twenty-one participants reported using sand bought from makers, while six use natural sand, and six answered “unknown.” While choice of sand is strongly restricted by economical, hygienic, or convenience factors, the clinical psychologists tended to consider sand that is comfortable to touch as most desirable. “Smooth” texture and recalling emotional warmth were suggested as characteristics of “natural” feeling sand. From the results, the experiences, attitudes, and expectations of the clinical psychologists towards sand can impact the type of sand that is chosen, how clients use and play with it, and the type of role sand plays in therapy. It is important to be conscious of these factors prior to using techniques in sandplay therapy. When discussing sand in sandplay therapy in both case studies and experimental research, it is necessary to take into consideration what kind of sand is used and the perception of the psychologist.
