4. Vascular smooth muscle lipofuscinosis occurring predominantly in veins of a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis)

Abstract

A 6-year-old male cynomolgus monkey showed chronic wasting. No gross abnormalities were observed in necropsy except for changes secondary to wasting. Microscopic examination revealed pigment granules deposition in systemic smooth muscles. They were observed as brown or basophilic in hematoxylin and eosin stain, and were positive for periodic acid-Schiff, Schmorl and Ziehl-Neelsen. Ultrastructurally, they consisted of residual bodies surrounded with varying amounts of solitary ribosomes. Thus, these granules were considered as lipofuscin. Unlike brown bowel syndrome in humans, the pigment granules were distributed systemically not only in the digestive tract but also in the blood vessels predominantly in the veins. To our knowledge, this is the first report on vascular smooth muscle lipofuscinosis occurring predominantly in the veins of primates.

Abstract

One of the most effective methods of utilizing solar energy is to use the sunlight and solar thermal energy such as a photovoltaic-thermal panel (PV/T panel) simultaneously. From such a viewpoint, systems using various kinds of PV panels were constructed in the world. In these panels, solar cells are set up at an absorber collecting solar thermal energy. Therefore, temperature of solar cell increases up to the prescribed temperature of thermal energy use, although it is lower than the cell temperature when using only solar cell panel. For maintaining cell conversion efficiency at the standard conditions, it is necessary to keep the cell at lower temperature. In this paper, electric and thermal energy obtained from a PV/T panel is evaluated in terms of energy. Based on this evaluation, the method of not to decrease cell conversion efficiency with collecting solar thermal energy was proposed.

Abstract

Recently there has been increased interest in using thermoplastic encapsulant materials in photovoltaic modules, but concerns have been raised about whether these would be mechanically stable at high temperatures in the field. Recently, this has become a significant topic of discussion in the development of IEC 61730 and IEC 61215. We constructed eight pairs of crystalline-silicon modules and eight pairs of glass/encapsulation/glass thin-film mock modules using different encapsulant materials, of which only two were formulated to chemically crosslink. One module set was exposed outdoors with thermal insulation on the back side in Mesa, Arizona, in the summer (hot-dry), and an identical module set was exposed in environmental chambers. High-precision creep measurements (±20 μm) and electrical performance measurements indicate that despite many of these polymeric materials operating in the melt or rubbery state during outdoor deployment, no significant creep was seen because of their high viscosity, lower operating temperature at the edges, and/or the formation of chemical crosslinks in many of the encapsulants with age despite the absence of a crosslinking agent. Only an ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulant formulated without a peroxide crosslinking agent crept significantly. In the case of the crystalline-silicon modules, the physical restraint of the backsheet reduced creep further and was not detectable even for the EVA without peroxide. Because of the propensity of some polymeric materials to crosslink as they age, typical thermoplastic encapsulants would be unlikely to result in creep in the vast majority of installations.

Abstract

The authors previously investigated progressive glomerulonephropathy in 2- to 11-year-old common marmosets and characterized age-related changes of the renal glomeruli and development of tubulointerstitial lesions. In this study, immunoglobulin deposition and ultrastructural changes of the glomeruli were investigated in 5 young marmosets from 6 months to 3 years of age with pre-onset or early glomerulonephropathy. In all animals, the foot processes of podocytes were effaced, and IgM was deposited into the glomeruli. In glomeruli without glomerular basement membrane (GBM) alteration, IgM was the only immunoglobulin type deposited in the glomeruli. In cases with more advanced lesions of reticulation and thickening of GBM, IgA and IgG deposits were also observed. Therefore, the authors conclude that IgM may be the primary or earliest immunoglobulin deposited in this nephropathy, whereas IgA and IgG deposition may be connected to the progression of the glomerular lesions.
