1. Level shifts of exotic deuterium atoms from effective range parameters

Abstract

We discuss various methods for determining the level shifts induced by short-range interactions in exotic atoms which are formed by a hadron and a nucleus of opposite charge. The energy shifts can be related to the effective range parameters through Deser or Trueman formulas. In order to assess the accuracy and the reliability of this indirect approach, its predictions are compared with direct bound-state calculations. Notably, the importance of including the Coulomb potential in scattering calculations is highlighted. Finally, the impact of multipole terms in the asymptotic electromagnetic interaction is examined. It is demonstrated that an indirect approach remains relevant by accounting for these effects perturbatively.

2. Low-energy $S$-wave scattering of $\text{H}+e^-$ by a Lagrange-mesh method

Abstract

A method combining the Lagrange-mesh and the complex Kohn variational methods is developed for computing the $\mathcal{S}$ matrix of a 2$+$1 elastic scattering in the frame of three-body Coulomb systems. Resonance parameters can be obtained from values of the $\mathcal{S}$ matrix at several scattering energies. The method is illustrated with the $S$-wave low-energy scattering of an electron onto hydrogen. The computed phase shifts are at least as accurate as the literature results, and the resonance parameters are more accurate than the best literature results by several orders of magnitude. Both the infinite and finite proton mass cases are considered.

5. The Jost function and Siegert pseudostates from R-matrix calculations at complex wavenumbers

Abstract

The single-channel Jost function is calculated with the computational R-matrix on a Lagrange-Jacobi mesh, in order to study its behaviour at complex wavenumbers. Three potentials derived from supersymmetric transformations are used to test the accuracy of the method. Each of these potentials, with s-wave or p-wave bound, resonance or virtual states, has a simple analytical expression for the Jost function, which is compared with the calculated Jost function. Siegert states and Siegert pseudostates are determined by finding the zeros of the calculated Jost function. Poles of the exact Jost function are not present in the calculated Jost function due to the truncation of the potential in the R-matrix method. Instead, Siegert pseudostates arise in the vicinity of the missing poles., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

8. Non-invasive lipid quantification of living microalgal cultures with digital holographic microscopy

Abstract

Some microalgae store large amounts of neutral lipids inside lipid droplets. Since these lipids can be used to produce biodiesel in a sustainable way, research is developing on fast non-destructive methods to quantify and monitor the amount of lipids in microalgal cultures. In this paper, we have developed with digital holographic microscopy a fast quantitative method to assess the evolution of the lipid content inside the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum living cells. The method uses a specific processing of recorded hologram sequences based on the refocusing capability of digital holographic microscopy. Each lipid droplet volume is evaluated inside the cells on representative samples of the culture. We have validated the method thanks to correlative quantitative phase contrast-fluorescence imaging and extrapolated it to larger calibrated spherical refractive particles, to demonstrate the flexibility of the method., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

10. Changes in caddisflies community composition and distribution along 60 years timespan monitoring in Luxembourg

Abstract

In Luxembourg, caddisflies have been systematically collected since the early Sixties. Three periods of exhaustive sampling may be distinguished: the Sixties; 1994 to 2002; and a long period from 2007 to the present time in the frame of the Water Framework Directive. Bearing in mind the uneven sampling procedure across periods, we aim to document changes in community composition and distribution through time including the nature of these changes (e.g. gains and losses of species). We hypothesise different trends of species gains and losses for specialist species in comparison to generalist species. Therefore, we propose a method to identify specialist and generalist species in our dataset. Historical data (1961 to 1968) lack information on precise locations and abundance of specimen collected. Consequently, cell grids of original distribution maps are used to compare caddisfly community assemblages along the three monitoring periods. We assess the changes that occur on presence/absence data in specific groups of species (i.e. cold-adapted, warm-adapted specialists and generalist species). Temporal β-diversity results reveal that survey intervals for each monitoring period are dominated by species losses when the comparison is restricted to cold-adapted species. On the other hand, warm-adapted and generalist species are increasing from the Sixties period when compared to the two next periods (1994–2002 and 2007–2020). However, the comparison of the most recent periods reveals species losses even for the warm-adapted and generalist species. This complex picture of caddisflies species losses and gains in different ways through time, amongst river types and in response to different pressures, is discussed.

12. Exchange effects in nucleus-nucleus reactions

Abstract

We present a scattering model for nuclei with similar masses. In this three-body model, the projectile has a core+valence structure, whereas the target is identical to the core nucleus. The three-body wave functions must be symmetrized for the exchange of the cores. This property gives rise to non-local potentials, which are computed without approximation. The present model is an extension of the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) formalism, with an additional treatment of core exchange. We solve the coupled-channel system, including non-local terms, by the $R$-matrix method using Lagrange functions. This model is applied to the $^{13}{\rm C}+^{12}$C, $^{13}{\rm N}+^{12}$C and $^{16}{\rm O}+^{12}$C systems. Experimental scattering cross sections are fairly well reproduced without any parameter fitting. The backward-angle enhancement of the elastic cross sections is due to the non-local potential. Abstract

The Hyperspherical Harmonics (HH) method is one of the most accurate techniques to solve the quantum mechanical problem for nuclear systems with $A\le 4$. In particular, by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz or Kohn variational principle, both bound and scattering states can be addressed, using either local or non-local interactions. Thanks to this versatility, the method can be used to test the two- and three-nucleon components of the nuclear interaction. In the present review we introduce the formalism of the HH method, both for bound and scattering states. In particular, we describe the implementation of the method to study the $A=3$ and $4$ scattering problem. Second, we present a selected choice of results of the last decade, most representative of the latest achievements. 14. Quasibound states of an antiproton and a hydrogen atom

Accurate three-body quantal calculations of the system composed of a proton, an antiproton, and an electron are performed in perimetric coordinates with the Lagrange-mesh method, an approximate variational calculation with the simplicity of a calculation on a grid. Quasibound states with respect to the $\bar{p}$ + H($n = 2$) threshold are obtained for $L = 60$ to 71 for various vibrational excitations. Their energies have accuracies up to about $10^{-14}$ atomic units while less precise energies are determined for $L = 56-59$ broader resonances. Their structure is analyzed with the help of mean distances between the particles. These mean distances indicate that the proton-electron subsystem is in excited states, mostly $n = 2$, as predicted by Sakimoto (Phys. Rev. A 98, 042503, 2018) with the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Abstract

A numerical method to build an orthonormal basis of properly symmetrized hyperspherical harmonic functions is developed. As a part of it, refined algorithms for calculating the transformation coefficients between hyperspherical harmonics constructed from different sets of Jacobi vectors are derived and discussed. Moreover, an algorithm to directly determine the numbers of independent symmetric hyperspherical states (in case of bosonic systems) and antisymmetric hyperspherical-spinisospin states (in case of fermionic systems) entering the expansion of the A-body wave functions is presented. Abstract

In Belgium, the cooperative movement developed since the last quarter of the 19th century as the backbone of a socialist workers’ movement where the party form will be both the fruit of a grouping and the centralizing and leading force of the other components that are mutuals, unions and cooperatives. Cooperatives are at the heart of the development of socialism in Belgium and give it significant economic power. Beyond a logistical aspect, for the Belgian socialists « [The cooperative] appears (…) as a kind of embryonic realization of socialism, which prepares minds to conceive a social order very different from the current capitalist regime ». The Belgian cooperative movement adopted the principles laid down by Rochdale’s pioneers, but added an obligation to join the Belgian Workers' Party (POB) and to allocate part of the profits to socialist propaganda. This addition clearly differentiates the Belgian cooperative model from that of other countries. Another specificity is to have developed almost exclusively on the consumption model, the few production cooperatives feeding it.

Abstract

Humans impact terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems, yet many broad-scale studies have found no systematic, negative biodiversity changes (for example, decreasing abundance or taxon richness). Here we show that mixed biodiversity responses may arise because community metrics show variable responses to anthropogenic impacts across broad spatial scales. We first quantified temporal trends in anthropogenic impacts for 1,365 riverine invertebrate communities from 23 European countries, based on similarity to least-impacted reference communities. Reference comparisons provide necessary, but often missing, baselines for evaluating whether communities are negatively impacted or have improved (less or more similar, respectively). We then determined whether changing impacts were consistently reflected in metrics of community abundance, taxon richness, evenness and composition. Invertebrate communities improved, that is, became more similar to reference conditions, from 1992 until the 2010s, after which improvements plateaued. Improvements were generally reflected by higher taxon richness, providing evidence that certain community metrics can broadly indicate anthropogenic impacts. However, richness responses were highly variable among sites, and we found no consistent responses in community abundance, evenness or composition. These findings suggest that, without sufficient data and careful metric selection, many common community metrics cannot reliably reflect anthropogenic impacts, helping explain the prevalence of mixed biodiversity trends.

Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

Relativistic atomic structure calculations are carried out in alkaline-earth-metal ions using a semiempirical-core-potential approach. The systems are partitioned into frozen-core electrons and an active valence electron. The core orbitals are defined by a Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculation using the grasp2k package. The valence electron is described by a Dirac-like Hamiltonian involving a core-polarization potential to simulate the core-valence electron correlation. The associated equation is solved with the Lagrange-mesh method, which is an approximate variational approach having the form of a mesh calculation because of the use of a Gauss quadrature to calculate matrix elements. Properties involving the low-lying metastable $^2D_{3/2,5/2}$ states of Ca$^{+}$, Sr$^{+}$, and Ba$^{+}$ are studied, such as polarizabilities, one- and two-photon decay rates, and lifetimes. Abstract

How does nature hold together protons and neutrons to form the wide variety of complex nuclei in the universe? Describing many-nucleon systems from the fundamental theory of quantum chromodynamics has been the greatest challenge in answering this question. The chiral effective field theory description of the nuclear force now makes this possible but requires certain parameters that are not uniquely determined. Defining the nuclear force needs identification of observables sensitive to the different parametrizations. From a measurement of proton elastic scattering on $^{10}$C at TRIUMF and ab initio nuclear reaction calculations we show that the shape and magnitude of the measured differential cross section is strongly sensitive to the nuclear force prescription., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

24. A regularized Lagrange-mesh method based on an orthonormal Lagrange-Laguerre basis

Abstract

The Lagrange-mesh method is an approximate variational approach having the form of a mesh calculation because of the use of a Gauss quadrature. Although this method provides accurate results in many problems with small number of mesh points, its accuracy can be strongly reduced by the presence of singularities in the potential term. In this paper, a new regularized Lagrange-Laguerre mesh, based on \textit{exactly} orthonormal Lagrange functions, is devised. It is applied to two solvable radial potentials: the harmonic-oscillator and Coulomb potentials. In spite of the singularities of the Coulomb and centrifugal potentials, accurate bound-state energies are obtained for all partial waves. The analysis of these results and a comparison with other Lagrange-mesh calculations lead to a simple rule to predict in which cases a singularity does induce or not a significant loss of accuracy in Lagrange-mesh calculations. In addition, the Lagrange-Laguerre-mesh approach is applied to the evaluation of phase shifts via integral relations. Small numbers of mesh points suffice to provide very accurate results.

Abstract

The weakly bound exotic ${}^{11}$Be nucleus, famous for its ground-state parity inversion and distinct n+ ${}^{10}$Be halo structure, is investigated from first principles using chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. An explicit treatment of continuum effects is found to be indispensable. We study the sensitivity of the ${}^{11}$Be spectrum to the details of the three-nucleon force and demonstrate that only certain chiral interactions are capable of reproducing the parity inversion. With such interactions, the extremely large E1 transition between the bound states is reproduced. We compare our photodisintegration calculations to conflicting experimental data and predict a distinct dip around the $3/2^-_1$ resonance energy. Finally, we predict low-lying $3/2^+$ and $9/2^+$ resonances that are not or not sufficiently measured in experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, plus Supplemental Material

The seven-nucleon bound and resonance states and the $\alpha+{^3{\rm He}}/{^3{\rm H}}$ elastic scattering are also studied and compared with experiment. The low-lying resonance properties are rather well reproduced by our approach. Abstract

The Lagrange-mesh method has the simplicity of a calculation on a mesh and can have the accuracy of a variational method. It is applied to the study of a confined helium atom. Two types of confinement are considered. Soft confinements by potentials are studied in perimetric coordinates. Hard confinement in impenetrable spherical cavities is studied in a system of rescaled perimetric coordinates varying in [0,1] intervals. Energies and mean values of the distances between electrons and between an electron and the helium nucleus are calculated. A high accuracy of 11 to 15 significant figures is obtained with small computing times. Pressures acting on the confined atom are also computed. For sphere radii smaller than 1, their relative accuracies are better than $10^{-10}$. Based on an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, a microscopic cluster model of the nucleus-nucleus bremsstrahlung, including implicitly a part of the effects of meson-exchange currents via an extension of the Siegert theorem is applied to the $\alpha+p$ and $\alpha+n$ systems. The contributions of the $E1$ and $E2$ transitions to the bremsstrahlung cross sections are evaluated and their relative importance for the mirror systems $\alpha+p$ and $\alpha+n$ is compared. Another approach based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions and the No-Core Shell Model/Resonating-Group Method is also investigated. Abstract

At low photon energies, the potential models of nucleus-nucleus bremsstrahlung are based on electric transition multipole operators, which are derived either only from the nuclear current or only from the charge density by making the long-wavelength approximation and using the Siegert theorem. In the latter case, the bremsstrahlung matrix elements are divergent and some regularization techniques are used to obtain finite values for the bremsstrahlung cross sections. From an extension of the Siegert theorem, which is not based on the long-wavelength approximation, a new potential model of nucleus-nucleus bremsstrahlung is developed. Only convergent integrals are included in this approach. Formal links between bremsstrahlung cross sections obtained in these different models are made. Furthermore, three different ways to calculate the regularized matrix elements are discussed and criticized. Some prescriptions for a proper implementation of the regularization are deduced. Abstract

Humans impact terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems, yet many broad-scale studies have found no systematic, negative biodiversity changes (for example, decreasing abundance or taxon richness). Here we show that mixed biodiversity responses may arise because community metrics show variable responses to anthropogenic impacts across broad spatial scales. We first quantified temporal trends in anthropogenic impacts for 1,365 riverine invertebrate communities from 23 European countries, based on similarity to least-impacted reference communities. Reference comparisons provide necessary, but often missing, baselines for evaluating whether communities are negatively impacted or have improved (less or more similar, respectively). We then determined whether changing impacts were consistently reflected in metrics of community abundance, taxon richness, evenness and composition. Invertebrate communities improved, that is, became more similar to reference conditions, from 1992 until the 2010s, after which improvements plateaued. Improvements were generally reflected by higher taxon richness, providing evidence that certain community metrics can broadly indicate anthropogenic impacts. However, richness responses were highly variable among sites, and we found no consistent responses in community abundance, evenness or composition. These findings suggest that, without sufficient data and careful metric selection, many common community metrics cannot reliably reflect anthropogenic impacts, helping explain the prevalence of mixed biodiversity trends.

Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

Inland navigation in Europe is proposed to increase in the coming years, being promoted as a low-carbon form of transport. However, we currently lack knowledge on how this would impact biodiversity at large scales and interact with existing stressors. Here we addressed this knowledge gap by analysing fish and macroinvertebrate community time series across large European rivers comprising 19,592 observations from 4,049 sampling sites spanning the past 32 years. We found ship traffic to be associated with biodiversity declines, that is, loss of fish and macroinvertebrate taxonomic richness, diversity and trait richness. Ship traffic was also associated with increases in taxonomic evenness, which, in concert with richness decreases, was attributed to losses in rare taxa. Ship traffic was especially harmful for benthic taxa and those preferring slow flows. These effects often depended on local land use and riparian degradation. In fish, negative impacts of shipping were highest in urban and agricultural landscapes. Regarding navigation infrastructure, the negative impact of channelization on macroinvertebrates was evident only when riparian degradation was also high. Our results demonstrate the risk of increasing inland navigation on freshwater biodiversity. Integrative waterway management accounting for riparian habitats and landscape characteristics could help to mitigate these impacts.

The single-channel Jost function is calculatedwith the computational R-matrix on a Lagrange-Jacobi mesh,in order to study its behaviour at complex wavenumbers.Three potentials derived from supersymmetric transforma-tions, two of which never previously studied, are used to testthe accuracy of the method. Each of these potentials, withs-wave or p-wave bound, resonance or virtual states, has asimple analytical expression for the Jost function, which iscompared with the calculated Jost function. Siegert statesand Siegert pseudostates are determined by finding the zerosof the calculated Jost function. Poles of the exact Jost func-tion are not present in the calculated Jost function due to thetruncation of the potential in the R-matrix method. The present measurements provide a model-independent determination of transition strengths giving the values of B(M1;1/2+→3/2g.s.+)=1.04-0.12+0.03×10-2μN2 and B(M1;5/2+→3/2g.s.+)=7.12-0.96+1.27×10-2μN2. The quenched M1 transition strength for the 1/2+→3/2g.s.+ transition, with respect to the 5/2+→3/2g.s.+ transition, has been confirmed with greater precision. The current data are compared to importance-truncated no-core shell model calculations addressing effects due to continuum and three-body forces.

Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

Depuis plusieurs années, on assiste à une multiplication du nombre de coopératives (du latin co-operare, travailler ensemble). Une renaissance souvent liée à une volonté de faire de l’économie différemment, d’un retour à plus de contacts et de local. Le modèle coopératif allie ainsi le désir d’une économie au service des gens au fonctionnement démocratique. Bien au-delà de l’alimentation, la forme coopérative s’invite aujourd’hui dans les médias, la banque, la production d’électricité, l’immobilier... Mais ce modèle est loin d’être récent. Né en Angleterre avec les Equitables pionniers de Rochdale , en 1844, il a été au cœur du développement du mouvement ouvrier en Belgique, formant l’ossature du Parti Ouvrier Belge à partir du dernier quart du XIXe siècle. Ce livre rappelle la puissance des coopératives en Belgique durant une centaine d’années jusqu’à leur effondrement au début des années 1980 afin de questionner les coopératives actuelles à la lumière de l’expérience passée. Julien Dohet est historien, administrateur de l’Institut d’histoire ouvrière économique et sociale (IHOES) et secrétaire politique du SETCa Liège-Huy-Waremme. Il est l’auteur d’ouvrages et articles sur l’histoire des luttes sociales et sur l’extrême droite, thème de son précédent livre Dis, c’est quoi l'antifascisme ? Il a notamment publié Le Mouvement coopératif : histoire, questions et renouveau (CRISP). Sybille Mertens est économiste, professeure à HEC, faculté de gestion de l’Université de Liège et directrice du Centre d’Économie sociale. Elle enseigne l’économie sociale et coopérative ainsi que le financement de la durabilité. Ses recherches actuelles portent sur la transition du système économique, l’évaluation de l’impact social des entreprises et les business models socialement innovants.

Abstract

The Hyperspherical Harmonics (HH) method is one of the most accurate techniques to solve the quantum mechanical problem for nuclear systems with a number of nucleons A ≤ 4. In particular, by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz or Kohn variational principle, both bound and scattering states can be addressed, using either local or non-local interactions. Thanks to this versatility, the method can be used to test the two- and three-nucleon components of the nuclear interaction. In the present review we introduce the formalism of the HH method, both for bound and scattering states. In particular, we describe the implementation of the method to study the A = 3 and 4 scattering problems. Second, we present a selected choice of results of the last decade, most representative of the latest achievements. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of what we believe will be the most significant developments within the HH method for the next 5–10 years.
