How Climate Science [...], Across the world, judges are increasingly being asked to make decisions on litigation related to climate change. As climate impacts increase in severity over the coming decades, more cases are certain to follow. These cases sometimes require judges to understand both the basic, well-established principles of climate science in addition to cutting-edge techniques in climate change attribution--a rapidly growing scientific field that seeks to identify the link, if any, between greenhouse gas emissions of a given source and the occurrence or impacts of a particular weather event. Here, we introduce the general concepts of climate science and climate change attribution and discuss the relevance of these scientific topics to select high-profile cases that have been brought before various national and international judicial bodies. Moreover, judicial education plays a critical role in preparing judges for emerging issues relevant to their dockets. The growing number of climate cases suggests climate science is one such issue. To help judges make sense of climate science and its relevance, the Environmental Law Institute's Climate Judiciary Project is taking steps to bridge the divide between scientists and judges through specialized educational programming on several climate science topics. These efforts provide judges with the information and tools that they need to make informed decisions on the storm of litigation coming to their courtrooms, wherever they may be.

Abstract

Cranioplasty is an operation that aims to repair a defect in the skull. Indications commonly include Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), tumours, and infections. It carries a high rate of postoperative morbidity. Due to underlying pathology and the nature of the operation patients' Health-related Quality of life (QoL) can be severely affected. Patient reported outcomes (PROs) are poorly understood following cranioplasty. To investigate PROs following cranioplasty a cross-sectional cohort study of adults undergoing cranioplasty between 01/03/2010–30/08/2020 was conducted. If consent was provided, participants were sent five health reporting questionnaires: a study specific questionnaire, EuroQoL – 5D – 5L (EQ-5D-5L), RAND Short-Form 36 (SF-36), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Derriford Appearance Scale (DAS-24). 239 eligible patients were contacted and 72 (30.8%) participated. Median [Range] age was 52.5 [23 – 95] of which 59.7% (n= 43) were male. 16.9% (n = 12) were categorised with borderline and 29.0% (n = 20) with extreme depression, 15.9% (n = 11) reported borderline and 35.2% (n = 25) extreme anxiety. 69.1% (n = 47) had problems with usual activities and 71.6% (n = 49) suffered from pain/discomfort. Median (Range) EQ-5D-5L visual analogue scale score for overall health was 70.0 (5–100). 76.0% (n = 53) reported feeling conscious or having negative feelings towards their appearance. When compared to normative UK population, physical functioning, overall health, and energy/fatigue were the most affected. After cranioplasty, patients may have reduced HRQoL. Signposting and referral to well-being services could benefit patients' care. Adequately powered longitudinal studies are required to further elucidate change in PROs following cranioplasty. Abstract

When humans navigate a crowed space such as a university campus or the sidewalks of a busy street, they follow common sense rules based on social etiquette. In this paper, we argue that in order to enable the design of new algorithms that can take fully advantage of these rules to better solve tasks such as target tracking or trajectory forecasting, we need to have access to better data in the first place. To that end, we contribute the very first large scale dataset (to the best of our knowledge) that collects images and videos of various types of targets (not just pedestrians, but also bikers, skateboarders, cars, buses, golf carts) that navigate in a real-world outdoor environment such as a university campus. We present an extensive evaluation where different methods for trajectory forecasting are evaluated and compared. Moreover, we present a new algorithm for trajectory prediction that exploits the complexity of our new dataset and allows to: i) incorporate inter-class interactions into trajectory prediction models (e.g, pedestrian vs bike) as opposed to just intra-class interactions (e.g., pedestrian vs pedestrian); ii) model the degree to which the social forces are regulating an interaction. We call the latter "social sensitivity"and it captures the sensitivity to which a target is responding to a certain interaction. An extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of our novel approach.

15. Changing Counterproductive Beliefs about Attention, Memory, and Multitasking: Impacts of a Brief, Fully Online Module

Abstract

Ubiquitous mobile technology is part of contemporary life, bringing with it the potential for distraction and reduction in performance associated with multitasking. The predisposition toward dysfunctional multitasking may be shaped in part by beliefs that individuals hold about memory and attention. The issue is particularly pressing for college students, given established links between distraction, multitasking, and learning. This project assessed the impact of an online learning module on beliefs about attention, memory, and learning in college students. It also contrasted these beliefs in a college and non-college community sample. Significant reductions in counterproductive beliefs were associated with completing the module; counterproductive beliefs were also no more prevalent in the college vs. the non-college sample. Our findings suggest that brief online modules are a practical way to address counterproductive beliefs related to multitasking with technology, and add to the literature on metacognition, attention, and multitasking in college and non-college populations.

Abstract

This report describes the methods and procedures used for the field test of the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study First Followup 1996-98 (BPS:96/98). Students in this survey were first interviewed during 1995 as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study 1996 field test. The BPS:96/98 full-scale student sample includes students who started their postsecondary education during the 1995-96 academic year. Evaluation of procedures used in the field test has led to refinements that benefit the full-scale study. The introductory chapter describes the study and the unique purposes of the field test. Chapter 2 reviews the study design and methodology for the field test. Chapter 3 presents overall outcomes of data collection and the special procedures implemented during the field test. Chapter 4 examines issues related to the quality of the data collected. The major recommendations for changes in the design of the full-scale study are included by topic in chapters 3 and 4, and summarized at the end of chapter 4. Materials used in the field test, including 5 facsimile interviews are provided as five appendixes to the report. (Contains 2 figures and 17 tables.) (SLD)

Abstract

The use of drains, including suction drains in neurosurgery is individual preference-based, rather than scientific evidence-based. Furthermore, the use of suction drains has been associated with significant risks to patients, including sudden death. We present 2 cases of unfortunate sudden deaths following uneventful cranioplasty procedures, both of which were associated with the use of a suction drain. We also review the literature focusing on the benefits and risks in the use of suction drains, and discuss pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sudden death associated with their use. There is no substantial evidence to support the use of suction drains in neurosurgery. Furthermore, they have been associated with significant complications, including risk to life. Our experience and literature review suggest that the risk of sudden death is disproportionately higher following cranioplasty. We do not recommend the use of suction drains in cranial neurosurgery, and we strongly recommend against their use in cranioplasty procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Chronic electrophysiological changes in adriamycin cardiomyopathy in the rabbit

Abstract

Sudden cardiac death accounts for 35-45% of all deaths in heart failure, presumably from malignant ventricular arrhythmias. The aetiology of sudden arrhythmic death has not been fully elucidated, although a number of mechanisms exist which could potentially be arrhythmogenic. These include activation of the renin-angiotensin system, an increase in sympathetic nervous activity, electrolyte depletion and the use of inotropes and diuretics. It is likely however, that these mechanisms are secondary to the underlying electrophysiological changes in the myocardium resulting from the processes of myocyte damage and necrosis, compensatory hypertrophy and fibrosis which occur in the failing heart. In order to understand the basic mechanisms responsible for sudden death in heart failure, there is a need for animal models in which the electrophysiological changes produced by myocardial damage and the interrelationship between the myocardial electrophysiological substrate, neurohormonal activity and inducibility of arrhythmias can be studied in detail. In this study cardiac failure was induced in rabbits by injection of the cardiotoxin adriamycin 1mg/Kg twice weekly for 8 weeks. Electrophysiological recordings were made in conscious animals using bipolar pacing electrodes, implanted in the right ventricular apex. Recordings were made of the effective refractory period and the Stimulus-T interval of the paced evoked response. Neurohormonal assays and measurement of plasma electrolytes were undertaken during the study, and pathological analysis when the animals died. Progressive shortening in the stimulus-T interval and effective refractory period occurred in the adriamycin treated animals. No significant changes were seen in controls. Right ventricular papillary muscles from uninstrumented animals were used for in vitro electrophysiological studies. Action potential duration and effective refractory period were significantly shorter in the adriamycin group compared to controls. The changes in these electrophysiological parameters were independent of changes in plasma electrolytes and neurohormones. Captopril did not reverse the electrophysiological changes, but did cause a reduction in heart and liver weight, and ventricular ectopic activity. A cohort of animals treated with adriamycin and frusemide did not have a progressive shortening in effective refractory period and stimulus-T interval, and this questions the reproducibility of the electrophysiological changes in the study.
