2. Pieces of the periphery: A glance into the cartography of Ibibio’s CP domain

Abstract

Developments in cartographic observations of clause structure in Generative syntax predict strong formal linguistic universals among the ordering of phrases at the clausal edge. This ordering is assumed to result from a predetermined hierarchy that is defined by Universal Grammar (UG), reflecting an innate biological capacity for language in humans (Rizzi, 1989, p. 66). Ibibio, a Niger-Congo language, features a rich left periphery whose components demonstrate this hierarchical ordering. Through the interaction of left peripheral phenomena such as Argument Focus, Partial wh- movement, Q markers, and complementizers, this ordering is revealed. If Ibibio’s phrasal ordering differs from Rizzi’s proposed structure in (1), then the universality of Rizzi’s left periphery would be compromised. In addition to the phrases that Rizzi (1997) finds through Italian, Ibibio’s grammar parameterizes the activation of an additional phrase. We will find that the underlying order of Ibibio’s phrases does hold up to the posited hierarchy, supporting Rizzi’s (1997) proposition of the ordering of the left periphery in UG. Here is a comparison of these two peripheral structures.

Abstract

Across the world, judges are increasingly being asked to make decisions on litigation related to climate change. As climate impacts increase in severity over the coming decades, more cases are certain to follow. These cases sometimes require judges to understand both the basic, well-established principles of climate science in addition to cutting-edge techniques in climate change attribution--a rapidly growing scientific field that seeks to identify the link, if any, between greenhouse gas emissions of a given source and the occurrence or impacts of a particular weather event. Here, we introduce the general concepts of climate science and climate change attribution and discuss the relevance of these scientific topics to select high-profile cases that have been brought before various national and international judicial bodies. Moreover, judicial education plays a critical role in preparing judges for emerging issues relevant to their dockets. The growing number of climate cases suggests climate science is one such issue. To help judges make sense of climate science and its relevance, the Environmental Law Institute's Climate Judiciary Project is taking steps to bridge the divide between scientists and judges through specialized educational programming on several climate science topics. 15. Changing Counterproductive Beliefs about Attention, Memory, and Multitasking: Impacts of a Brief, Fully Online Module

Abstract

Ubiquitous mobile technology is part of contemporary life, bringing with it the potential for distraction and reduction in performance associated with multitasking. The predisposition toward dysfunctional multitasking may be shaped in part by beliefs that individuals hold about memory and attention. The issue is particularly pressing for college students, given established links between distraction, multitasking, and learning. This project assessed the impact of an online learning module on beliefs about attention, memory, and learning in college students. It also contrasted these beliefs in a college and non-college community sample. Significant reductions in counterproductive beliefs were associated with completing the module; counterproductive beliefs were also no more prevalent in the college vs. the non-college sample. Our findings suggest that brief online modules are a practical way to address counterproductive beliefs related to multitasking with technology, and add to the literature on metacognition, attention, and multitasking in college and non-college populations.

Abstract

When humans navigate a crowed space such as a university campus or the sidewalks of a busy street, they follow common sense rules based on social etiquette. In this paper, we argue that in order to enable the design of new algorithms that can take fully advantage of these rules to better solve tasks such as target tracking or trajectory forecasting, we need to have access to better data in the first place. To that end, we contribute the very first large scale dataset (to the best of our knowledge) that collects images and videos of various types of targets (not just pedestrians, but also bikers, skateboarders, cars, buses, golf carts) that navigate in a real-world outdoor environment such as a university campus. We present an extensive evaluation where different methods for trajectory forecasting are evaluated and compared. Moreover, we present a new algorithm for trajectory prediction that exploits the complexity of our new dataset and allows to: i) incorporate inter-class interactions into trajectory prediction models (e.g, pedestrian vs bike) as opposed to just intra-class interactions (e.g., pedestrian vs pedestrian); ii) model the degree to which the social forces are regulating an interaction. We call the latter "social sensitivity"and it captures the sensitivity to which a target is responding to a certain interaction. An extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of our novel approach.

Abstract

The use of drains, including suction drains in neurosurgery is individual preference-based, rather than scientific evidence-based. Furthermore, the use of suction drains has been associated with significant risks to patients, including sudden death. We present 2 cases of unfortunate sudden deaths following uneventful cranioplasty procedures, both of which were associated with the use of a suction drain. We also review the literature focusing on the benefits and risks in the use of suction drains, and discuss pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sudden death associated with their use. There is no substantial evidence to support the use of suction drains in neurosurgery. Furthermore, they have been associated with significant complications, including risk to life. Our experience and literature review suggest that the risk of sudden death is disproportionately higher following cranioplasty. We do not recommend the use of suction drains in cranial neurosurgery, and we strongly recommend against their use in cranioplasty procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This report describes the methods and procedures used for the field test of the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study First Followup 1996-98 (BPS:96/98). Students in this survey were first interviewed during 1995 as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study 1996 field test. The BPS:96/98 full-scale student sample includes students who started their postsecondary education during the 1995-96 academic year. Evaluation of procedures used in the field test has led to refinements that benefit the full-scale study. The introductory chapter describes the study and the unique purposes of the field test. Chapter 2 reviews the study design and methodology for the field test. Chapter 3 presents overall outcomes of data collection and the special procedures implemented during the field test. Chapter 4 examines issues related to the quality of the data collected. The major recommendations for changes in the design of the full-scale study are included by topic in chapters 3 and 4, and summarized at the end of chapter 4. 36. Towards Improved Remedial Outcomes in Categorical Aquifers with an Iterative Ensemble Smoother.

Abstract

Categorical parameter distributions consisting of geologic facies with distinct properties, for example, high‐permeability channels embedded in a low‐permeability matrix, are common at contaminated sites. At these sites, low‐permeability facies store solute mass, acting as secondary sources to higher‐permeability facies, sustaining concentrations for decades while increasing risk and cleanup costs. Parameter estimation is difficult in such systems because the discontinuities in the parameter space hinder the inverse problem. This paper presents a novel approach based on Traveling Pilot Points (TRIPS) and an iterative ensemble smoother (IES) to solve the categorical inverse problem. Groundwater flow and solute transport in a hypothetical aquifer with a categorical parameter distribution are simulated using MODFLOW 6. Heads and concentrations are recorded at multiple monitoring locations. IES is used to generate posterior ensembles assuming a TRIPS prior and an approximate multi‐Gaussian prior. The ensembles are used to predict solute concentrations and mass into the future. The evaluation also includes an assessment of how the number of measurements and the choice of the geological prior determine the characteristics of the posterior ensemble and the resulting predictions. The results indicate that IES was able to efficiently sample the posterior distribution and showed that even with an approximate geological prior, a high degree of parameterization and history matching could lead to parameter ensembles that can be useful for making certain types of predictions (heads, concentrations). However, the approximate geological prior was insufficient for predicting mass. The analysis demonstrates how decision‐makers can quantify uncertainty and make informed decisions with an ensemble‐based approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
