ERCC1 is a protein which is found to be associated with resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy. FDG uptake is considered as a prognostic marker in patients with NSCLC and provides information beyond that of TNM staging. The aim of this study is to examine both prognostic values of ERCC1 expression and 18F-FDG uptake on PET and their relationship in patients who underwent pulmonary resection for NSCLC. Although high expression of ERCC1 was found to be associated with better survival, the difference was not considered as statistically significant (p= 0.067). There is a significant survival advantage in ERCC1 (+) patients who did not receive adjuvant therapy (p= 0.047). High maximal standard uptake value (SUVmax) was found to be associated with poor survival (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.10; 95% CI, 1.02-1.18; p= 0.009). Correlation between ERCC1 expression and mean SUVmax was statistically insignificant (p= 0.915). Among patients with SUVmax ?2.5, ERCC1 positivity was 57.4% in patients who survived and 29.4% in patients who died which was statistically significant (p= 0.048). The association between high 18F-FDG uptake on PET and poor outcome was confirmed, but we failed to detect a powerful correlation between ERCC1 expression and SUVmax. © 2017, UHOD - Uluslararasi Hematoloji Onkoloji Dergisi. Support vector machine (SVM) training is an active research area since the dawn of the method. In recent years there has been increasing interest in specialized solvers for the important case of linear models. The algorithm presented by Hsieh et al., probably best known under the name of the "liblinear" implementation, marks a major breakthrough. The method is analog to established dual decomposition algorithms for training of non-linear SVMs, but with greatly reduced computational complexity per update step. This comes at the cost of not keeping track of the gradient of the objective any more, which excludes the application of highly developed working set selection algorithms. We present an algorithmic improvement to this method. We replace uniform working set selection with an online adaptation of selection frequencies. The adaptation criterion is inspired by modern second order working set selection methods. The same mechanism replaces the shrinking heuristic. This novel technique speeds up training in some cases by more than an order of magnitude.

Pericardial mesothelioma is a rare and highly aggressive and lethal cardiac tumour. A 25-year-old male patient who was complaining of fever, night sweats, shortness of breath and palpitations after an upper respiratory system infection was admitted in May 2008. He had a history of 12 years exposure to asbestos. When the patient was referred to our hospital in June 2008, his complaints of palpitations and shortness of breath were continuing. He had oedema of legs and a venous swelling on his neck. The echocardiography showed pericardial effusion and pericardial thickening which were also found on the CT. Through median sternotomy a pericardectomy and tumor resection were performed. Histological and immunohistochemical findings lead to the diagnosis of malignant pericardial mesothelioma. In conclusion, there is still not a radical therapy for primary pericardial mesothelioma. Surgery is done to prevent cardiac tamponade and relieves constriction (Fig. 1, Ref. 12).

Objective: The impact of DM on post-operative morbidity and mortality after valve surgery is less well defined and the results of the studies are controversial. This study evaluated the effects of DM on post-operative short-term morbidity after isolated mitral valve replacement. Methods: The study population included 214 consecutive patients undergoing isolated mitral valve replacement (MVR) with mechanical valves under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Patients were divided into two groups; diabetics (group I, n=36) and non-diabetics (group II, n=178). The groups were compared with respect to pre- and post-operative creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, post-operative cerebrovascular disorders, arrhythmia, post-operative revision due to blood loss, surgical site infection, post-opertive extubation time, intensive care unit (ICU) and in-hospital stay time, CPB and aortic cross-clamp time. Results: In the diabetic group, post-operative rate of cerebrovascular disorders (13.9% vs. 2.8%; p=0.015), intubation time (11.5±7.6 h vs. 10.4±15.9 h; p=0.001 ), length of ICU stay (3.5±2.9 d vs. 2.7±2.1 d; p=0.001 ) and in-hospital stay (14.4±8.9 d vs. 11.1±6.9 d; p=0.023), rate of surgical site infection (19.4% vs. 3.9%; p=0.003), revision requirement rate (16.7% vs. 6.2%; p=0.045) were significantly higher. DM was also identified as an independent risk factor for surgical site infection, cerebrovascular disorder, arrhythmia and requirement of revision. Conclusion: This study showed that DM not only increases short-term morbidity due to its multiple effects but is also an independent risk factor for surgical site infection, cerebrovascular disorder, arrhythmia and requirement of revision after isolated mitral valve replacement procedures. ©Copyright 2011 by Gazi University Medical Faculty.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of bacterial inoculation and different nitrogen doses on yield and yield components of some chickpea genotypes in Mustafakemalpaa province. Theresearch was conducted at Uludag University, Mustafakemalpaa Vocational School, Application and Training Field Bursa, Turkey in 1999 and 2000. Three genotypes; Local population, Canýtez 87 cultivar and ILC-114 Line were used as the crop material. Five different N dozes (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha-1) as ammonium nitrate and bacterial isolate (Rhizobium ciceri), supplied from Ankara Soil and Fertilizer Research Institute as the inoculating material were used. The complete randomized blocks design in factorial arrangement with three replications was used in this study. Seed yield, plant height, first podheight, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, harvest index and 1000 seed weight were observed in the study. Data over two years showed that inoculation of seed did a significant effect onyield and some yield components of chickpea. But, nitrogen doses had no significant effect on yield and yield components. According to two years results, Local population gave the highest yield (2149.1kg ha-1) among chickpea used.

The study was made to detect the most suitable crop rotation system(s) under rain-fed conditions of Southern Marmara Region, Turkey. In this study (1995-2001), two different crop rotation systems were carried out: winter wheat and sunflower as main crops experiments. Results were evaluated in terms of crop yielding ability, soil fertility and economic aspects. The sunflower-rapeseed-wheat, rapeseed-fodder pea + sunflower-wheat and rapeseed-common vetch + sunflower-wheat were found the most suitable rotation systems because of their various advantages in the first experiment in which wheat was used as main the crop. The highest sunflower seed yields were obtained from a fodder pea + sunflower-wheat-fodder pea + sunflower crop rotation system both in the first and second three year periods in which sunflower was used as main crop under rain-fed conditions. Economic analysis based on the second three-year results of the research showed that the highest mean net returns were obtained from the rapeseed-common vetch + sunflower-wheat and a fodder pea + sunflower-wheat-fodder pea + sunflower crop rotation systems under rain-fed conditions. These crop rotation systems were found the best crop rotation systems under rain-fed conditions of Southern Marmara region of Turkey. As a result, the rotation systems including common vetch and fodder peas as forage plants under rain-fed conditions gave economically the highest net profit.

Wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) lines obtained from F9 with special emphases to some agronomical and biochemical characters were selected as genotypes suitable for the production of food commodities. The new genotypes [Samples (a) and (h)] by crossing T. durum were found to be more productive (5283 and 4818 kg/ha) and more suitable for specific technological use than the older varieties.
