1. Effects of 3D Bone Models on Anatomy Education: Student Survey.

Abstract

Background/Aim: Anatomy education is of great importance in evaluating the human body as a whole and understanding the normal functioning of organs and systems. Knowledge of human anatomy plays a critical role in the diagnosis of diseases, surgical interventions, evaluation of the health status of patients and interpretation of the results of advanced imaging techniques. This study aims to evaluate the satisfaction of learning anatomy with three-dimensional virtual anato- my atlas we developed, and to investigate the effect of virtual three-dimensional applications on learning compared to traditional materials. Methods: The 3D applied atlas we developed was sent to the Faculty of Medicine Grade 1-2, Dentistry Grade 1, and Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Grade 1 students. Students were asked to use the 3D applied atlas in addition to traditional medical education materials in their anatomy learning process. A 9-question Google Forms survey was prepared to evaluate their satisfaction of the application. Results: 471 participants from the Faculty of Dentistry, Medicine Grade 1-2, and Physiotherapy Rehabilitation classes participated in our survey. Of the participants, 140 were Faculty of Dentis-try students, 70 were Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (PTR), 172 were Faculty of Medicine 1st grade and 89 were Faculty of Medicine 2nd grade. The number of students who found two-dimensional atlases useful was 198, while the number of students who found 3D models useful was 231. The number of students who found the cadaver model useful was 161. Conclusion: Based on the survey data we obtained, we can say that the students are satisfied with our 3D atlas application and have a positive attitude towards three-dimensional educational materials. 6. Evaluation of Uterine Artery Origins on Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Images.

Abstract

Background/Aims: The origin of the uterine artery varies widely. The branching patterns of the internal iliac artery are also quite variable. Branching of the internal iliac artery in different ways is important in pelvic surgery. In our study, fertile and infertile groups were created, and the arteries that gave rise to the uterine artery were examined. Methods: A total of 152 uterine arteries (n = 152) were evaluated retrospectively on 3D contrastenhanced magnetic resonance images. Based on the study of Gomez-Jorge, the types of origin of the uterine artery were obtained. With regards to the incidence of types, differences between the fertile and infertile groups were examined. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the incidence of origin types (p = 0.214). Based on the study of Gomez-Jorge, five different types of origins were obtained. The most common was type I (the uterine artery being the first branch of the inferior gluteal artery) origination. Conclusions: There are studies investigating the origin of the uterine artery in literature. We believe that our findings will also contribute to the body of knowledge available. 11. Evaluating Anatomy Education in Kastamonu Çatalzeytin Vocational Higher Schools through Student Feedbacks.

Abstract

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the opinions of the students in Çatalzeytin Vocational High School about Anatomy course. Methods: This study is a survey-based research aimed at evaluating the opinions of 639 students enrolled in different programs (Disability Care and Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy, and Elderly Care Programs) at Kastamonu University Çatalzeytin Vocational Higher School regarding the Anatomy course, which they have taken theoretically. The survey questionnaire consists of 29 questions related to the evaluation of theoretical classes and 8 questions related to the evaluation of exams. The survey questions were created online, and the participating students were provided with a link to access the survey questionnaire. Results: While 39,6 % of the students agreed with the question ‘I believe that practical courses should be included in addition to theoretical courses’, 4,1 % disagreed. If there are Anatomy courses again in the later stages of the programme I studied, I would like to take them again to reinforce them. 34,4 % of the students agreed, while 13,6 % disagreed. While 31,8 % agreed, 13,5 % disagreed with the question ‘I think that practical exams should be held in addition to theoretical exams in order to learn the subject better. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, which incorporates the opinions of the students, it is emphasized that practical classes should be included alongside theoretical classes in Anatomy education. Furthermore, it is noted that reminder sessions would be beneficial in the following years due to the tendency of forgetting the content of the Anatomy course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Clinical Significance of Maxillary Artery and its Branches: A Cadaver Study and Review of the Literature

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomy of the maxillary artery (MA) and its branches. Fourteen sides of Turkish adult cadavers were dissected. The specimens were classified according to the relation between MA and the lateral pterygoid. After the removal of the lateral pterygoid, parts and branches of MA were exposed. We classified the branching patterns of MA in the pterygopalatine fossa. The calibers and lengths of the arteries, and the distance between the zygomatic arch and MA, and between the infratemporal crest and MA were measured. The MA was found superficial to the lateral pterygoid in 57.2%. The inferior alveolar artery (IA) was arisen from MA before the middle meningeal artery (MM) in 35.7%, after MM in 35.7%. The IA and MM were arisen from the same area of MA in 14.3 %. In other two cases IA was arisen from the beginning of MA (14.3%). According to the contours of third portion of MA, we classified "Y" type (50%), "intermediate-T" type (14.3%), and "M" type (35.7%). This reinvestigation of the clinical anatomy of MA may provide useful information to the head and neck surgeons, dentists, neurosurgeons and radiologists related with this region. El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar la anatomía de la arteria maxilar (AM) y sus ramas. Fueron disecados 14 hemicabezas de cadáveres turcos adultos. Las muestras fueron clasificadas de acuerdo a las relaciones entre AM y el músculo pterigoideo lateral. Después de la eliminación del músculo pterigoideo lateral, las partes y las ramas de AM fueron expuestas. Se clasificaron los patrones de ramificación de la AM en la fosa pterigopalatina. El calibre y la longitud de las arterias, la distancia entre el arco cigomático y la AM , y entre la cresta infratemporal y la AM fueron medidas. La AM se encuentra superficial al músculo pterigoideo lateral en el 57,2%. La arteria alveolar inferior (AI) se originó desde la AM antes que la arteria meníngea media (MM) en el 35,7%, y después de ésta en el 35,7%. La AI y MM se originaron en la misma zona de la AM en el 14,3%. En otros dos casos la AI se originó desde el inicio de AM (14,3%). De acuerdo con los contornos de la tercera porción de AM, se clasificaron como tipo "Y" (50%), tipo "intermedio-T" (14,3%), y de tipo "M" (35,7%). Esta investigación de la anatomía clínica de la AM puede proporcionar información útil a los cirujanos de cabeza y cuello, odontólogos, neurocirujanos y radiólogos relacionados con esta región.

Abstract

Variations of vessels and nerves in the left neck side, of 65 year old male cadaver, during the routine dissections, were detected. It was observed that the linguofacial trunk originated from external carotid artery and that the ascending pharyngeal artery originated from the occipital artery. It was determined that after the laryngeopharyngeales rami originated from the superior cervical ganglion, the branch wound around the origin of the superior thyroid artery. As an additional variation, the internal jugular vein divided. The cervical ansa and the inferior belly of the omohyoid muscle passed through the parts of the vein. We think that these type of variation can entail important difficulties during radiologic and surgical procedures of the neck region. Abstract

We aimed to compare the myocardial bridges (MBs) both in the coronary angiography and cadavers. Morphological (length, thickness, deepness, the angle between the long axis of vessel and location) and angiographic properties (length, degree of systolic obstruction, frequency) of the MBs were evaluated in 50 adult cadaver hearts and in 1,321 cineangiograms. Myocardial bridges were observed in 32 of the cadaver hearts (64%) and 100 of cineangiograms (7.57%). It was observed that MBs caused significant coronary stenosis in 34 of 100 individuals leading to the prevalence of significant MB to be (2.5%) in angiography. The MBs that are above the left anterior descending artery in cadaver were classified as superficial MB (77.4%) and deep MB (22.6%). In cineangiogram, the average length of MB (MBL) was determined as 10.32 ± 4.62 mm. The presence of MB, MBL and degree of luminal narrowing were not associated with the age and gender. Abstract

We aimed to describe the distribution of the motor branches of the median and ulnar nerves that innervate the superficial flexor muscles in detail, as well as to determine any communication between these two nerves in a series of 100 human fetuses. This study was performed on 200 upper limbs from 100 fetuses. However, the motor branches of the median nerve were determined on 50 upper limbs because of the developmental properties of medial epicondylar muscles. The motor branch, which innervates the pronator teres, is classified into two types and four subtypes. The flexor carpi radialis branch arose as a single branch in 30% of the cases. The innervation of the flexor digitorum superficialis was also performed by a single muscular branch in 88% of the cases and by two branches in 12% of the cases. The ulnar nerve was classified into two types according to the number of muscular branches in the forearm. Martin–Gruber anastomosis was observed in 7.5% of the cases. These results show differences from classical definitions regarding the muscular branching patterns of the median and ulnar nerves. We suggest revisiting the classical descriptions of innervation patterns of pronator teres, palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis muscles, since the variations observed in their innervation patterns are more diverse than has been described. 19. Morphometric Evaluation of Thoracic Vertebrae Using Multidetector Computed Tomography in Patients with Scoliosis.

Abstract

Aim: Many people have congenital and acquired deformities associated with the vertebral column. Vertebral surgery is practiced in cases like scoliosis, traffic accidents, falling down from height, cancer, and disc hernia. We aimed to reduce morbidity and mortality by creating alternative predictions for surgery and treatment with the findings and results we obtained in our study in patients with scoliosis. Methods: Patients with scoliosis (eight male, eight female) who underwent thoracic vertebrae imaging by multidetector computed tomography at Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine between 2013 and 2017 and who were not operated and those without scoliosis (eight male and nine female) who underwent imaging for other reasons were retrospectively evaluated. The group aged >15 years was created in a similar way. Similarly, groups with thoracic X-ray and tomography were created; Cobb angles and the width, height, and distance between the dorsal tips of the transverse process were measured in 12 thoracic vertebrae. Lateral distances from the midline junction of the right lamina of vertebra to the lateral of the right transverse process and pedicle of vertebra junction were measured; measurements were repeated for the left side and recorded. Measurements were made in 780 thoracic vertebrae. Results: Mean Cobb angle of 8 in 10–14-year-old male patients with thoracic scoliosis was 30.9° and mean age was 13 years. Mean Cobb angle of 8 in 10–14-year-old female patients with thoracic scoliosis was 32.72° and the mean age was 12.75 years. Conclusion: Our findings will help for manufacturers create personalized screws and plates, and help surgeons make operational choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Morphometric Analysis of Orbit in Turkish Population: a MDCT Study.

Abstract

Objective: The orbit is an important cavity containing vision-related formations and important neurovascular structures, and adjacent to various regions. This study aimed to evaluation, by multidedector computed tomography (MDCT) images, the morphometry of orbit by examining its changes according to gender and body side, and developments according to age, in Turkish population. Materials and Methods: A total of 200 individuals's (94 females,106 males;400 sides) MDCT images were evaluated. Images were examined according to the gender, body side, and the anatomical structures development. Results: The height, width and depth of the orbit were determined as 36.04±2.97 mm, 32.33±2.59 mm, 38.35±3.32 mm on the right side, 35.79±3.18 mm, 32.29±2.67 mm, 38.13±3.21 mm on the left side, respectively, in healthy subjects. The height and width of the orbit were found to be statistically significantly larger on both sides in men than in women (p = 0.05). Conclusion: Comprehensive information about the orbit and associated apertures is quite important for clinicians working in this area, damage to these structures can cause serious complications. In addition, determining the morphometry of the orbit can be used as an important parameter for determining gender, age and race in forensic medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A rare case of unilateral third head of sternocleidomastoid and an extra muscle levator claviculae were determined unilaterally in a 70-year-old male cadaver during the routine dissections. In the left neck side, it was observed that the sternocleidomastoid muscle also had a third part in addition to known sternal and clavicular heads and levator claviculae muscle which arose from the posterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 3rd cervical vertebra and attached to the posterior margin of the clavicle. Çalışmamızda Türk popülasyonunun orbita morfometrisini, çok kesitli bilgisayarlı tomografi (ÇKBT) görüntülerinde cinsiyete, vücut tarafına göre farklılıklarını, yaşa bağlı gelişimini değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntem: 94’ü erkek, 106’sı kadın olmak üzere toplam 200 bireyin (400 taraf) ÇKBT görüntüleri üzerinde ölçümler yapıldı. Görüntüler cinsiyet, vücut tarafı ve anatomik yapıların gelişimlerine göre değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Sağlıklı bireylerde orbita yüksekliği, genişliği ve derinliği sırasıyla sağ tarafta ortalama 36,04±2,97 mm, 32,33±2,59 mm, 38,35±3,32 mm iken sol tarafta 35,79±3,18 mm, 32,29±2,67 mm, 38,13±3,21 mm olarak belirlendi. Orbita’nın yüksekliği ve genişliği her iki tarafta da erkeklerde kadınlardan istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede büyük olduğu tespit edildi (p˂0,05). Sonuç: Orbita ve ilişkili açıklıklar hakkında kapsamlı bilgi, ilgili bölgede çalışan klinisyenler açısından oldukça önemlidir, bu yapıların zarar görmesi ciddi komplikasyonlara neden olabilir. Bununla birlikte, orbita’nın morfometrisi adli tıpta cinsiyet, yaş ve ırk tespiti için önemli bir parametre olarak kullanılabilir.

Abstract

WOS: 000487459600032, PubMed: 31302743, Purpose We aimed to determine the position and size of the sphenoid sinus (SS) in our study and compare the results of the measurements relative to age, gender, and the presence of pituitary adenoma using multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT). Methods We retrospectively evaluated the paranasal sinus computerized tomography (CT) images of 200 individuals (age range of all the individuals 4-84 years; 101 females, 99 males; age range of individuals with pituitary adenoma 15-63 years; 15 females, 9 males) with 24 pituitary adenomas. The shape of SS were identified and classified, volume were measured by MDCT also for individuals with pituitary adenoma. Results It was determined that the volume averages were significantly affected by the type of SS. Among all the individuals studied, the sellar type of SS was most frequently observed (41.5%), followed by the postsellar type (38.5%), and the least observed was the presellar type (9%). The volume of the SS is bigger in males than females although the volume is not affected by the presence of pituitary adenomas. The development of the SS continues until the age of nine. Conclusion The morphology and morphometry of the SS show individual differences. These anatomic variations are important for decision making and application for surgical interventions (especially transsphenoidal surgery).
