A striking feature of the Vela pulsar (PSR J0835$-$4510) is that it undergoes sudden increases in its spin frequency, known as glitches, with a fractional amplitude on the order of $10^{-6}$ approximately every 900 days. Glitches of smaller magnitudes are also known to occur in Vela. Their distribution in both time and amplitude is less well constrained but equally important for understanding the physical process underpinning these events. In order to better understand these small glitches in Vela, an analysis of high-cadence observations from the Mount Pleasant Observatory is presented. A hidden Markov model (HMM) is used to search for small, previously undetected glitches across 24 years of observations covering MJD 44929 to MJD 53647. One previously unknown glitch is detected around MJD 48636 (Jan 15 1992), with fractional frequency jump $\Delta f/f = (8.19 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{-10}$ and frequency derivative jump $\Delta\dot{f}/\dot{f} = (2.98 \pm 0.01) \times 10^{-4}$. Two previously reported small glitches are also confidently re-detected, and independent estimates of their parameters are reported. Excluding these events, 90% confidence frequentist upper limits on the sizes of missed glitches are also set, with a median upper limit of $\Delta f^{90\%}/f = 1.35 \times 10^{-9}$. Upper limits of this kind are enabled by the semi-automated and computationally efficient nature of the HMM, and are crucial to informing studies which are sensitive to the lower end of the glitch size distribution., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. PSR B1706$-$44 is an energetic gamma-ray pulsar located inside supernova remnant (SNR) G343.1$-$2.3 and it powers a compact pulsar wind nebula (PWN) that shows torus and jet structure in X-rays. We present a radio study of the PWN using Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations at 3, 6, 13, and 21\,cm. We found an overall arc-like morphology at 3 and 6\,cm, and the ``arc" shows two distinct peaks at 6\,cm. The radio emission is faint inside the X-ray PWN and only brightens beyond that. We develop a thick torus model with Doppler boosting effect to explain the radio PWN structure. The model suggests a bulk flow speed of $\sim 0.2c$, which could indicate significant deceleration of the flow from the X-ray emitting region. Our polarization result reveals a highly ordered toroidal $B$-field in the PWN. Its origin is unclear given that the supernova reverse shock should have interacted with the PWN. At a larger scale, the 13 and 21\,cm radio images detected a semi-circular rim and an east-west ridge of G343.1$-$2.3. We argue that the latter could possibly be a pulsar tail rather than a filament of the SNR, as supported by the flat radio spectrum and the alignment between the magnetic field and its elongation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted by APJ

Radio Astronomy is undergoing a renaissance, as the next-generation of instruments provides a massive leap forward in collecting area and therefore raw sensitivity. However, to achieve this theoretical level of sensitivity in the science data products we need to address the much more pernicious systematic effects, which are the true limitation. These become all the more significant when we consider that much of the time used by survey instruments, such as the SKA, will be dedicated to deep surveys. CHILES is a deep HI survey of the COSMOS field, with 1,000 hours of VLA time. We present our approach for creating the image cubes from the first Epoch, with discussions of the methods and quantification of the data quality from 946 to 1420MHz -- a redshift range of 0.5 to 0. We layout the problems we had to solve and describe how we tackled them. These are of importance as CHILES is the first deep wideband multi-epoch HI survey and it has relevance for ongoing and future surveys. We focus on the accumulated systematic errors in the imaging, as the goal is to deliver a high-fidelity image that is only limited by the random thermal errors. To understand and correct these systematic effects we ideally manage them in the domain in which they arise, and that is predominately the visibility domain. CHILES is a perfect test bed for many of the issues we can expect for deep imaging with the SKA or ngVLA and we discuss the lessons we have learned., Comment: Accepted in AJ

As the largest radio telescope in the world, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will lead the next generation of radio astronomy. The feats of engineering required to construct the telescope array will be matched only by the techniques developed to exploit the rich scientific value of the data. To drive forward the development of efficient and accurate analysis methods, we are designing a series of data challenges that will provide the scientific community with high-quality datasets for testing and evaluating new techniques. In this paper we present a description and results from the first such Science Data Challenge (SDC1). Based on SKA MID continuum simulated observations and covering three frequencies (560 MHz, 1400MHz and 9200 MHz) at three depths (8 h, 100 h and 1000 h), SDC1 asked participants to apply source detection, characterization and classification methods to simulated data. The challenge opened in November 2018, with nine teams submitting results by the deadline of April 2019. In this work we analyse the results for 8 of those teams, showcasing the variety of approaches that can be successfully used to find, characterise and classify sources in a deep, crowded field. The results also demonstrate the importance of building domain knowledge and expertise on this kind of analysis to obtain the best performance. Glitches are sudden increases in the rotation rate $\nu$ of neutron stars, which are thought to be driven by the neutron superfluid inside the star. The Vela pulsar presents a comparatively high rate of glitches, with 21 events reported since observations began in 1968. These are amongst the largest known glitches (17 of them have sizes $\Delta\nu/\nu\geq10^{-6}$) and exhibit very similar characteristics. This similarity, combined with the regularity with which large glitches occur, has turned Vela into an archetype of this type of glitching behaviour. The properties of its smallest glitches, on the other hand, are not clearly established. High-cadence observations of the Vela pulsar were taken between 1981 and 2005 at the Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory. An automated systematic search was carried out that investigated whether a significant change of spin frequency $\nu$ and/or the spin-down rate $\dot{\nu}$ takes place at any given time. We find two new glitches, with respective sizes $\Delta\nu/\nu$ of $(5.55\pm0.03)\times10^{-9}$ and $(38\pm4)\times10^{-9}$. In addition to these two glitch events, our study reveals numerous events of all possible signatures (i.e. combinations of $\Delta\nu$ and $\Delta\dot{\nu}$ signs), all of them small with $|\Delta\nu|/\nu<10^{-9}$, which contribute to the Vela timing noise. The Vela pulsar presents an under-abundance of small glitches compared to many other glitching pulsars, which appears genuine and not a result of observational biases. In addition to typical glitches, the smooth spin-down of the pulsar is also affected by an almost continuous activity that can be partially characterised by small step-like changes in $\nu$, $\dot{\nu,}$ or both. We present neutral hydrogen (HI) and ionized hydrogen (H${\alpha}$) observations of ten galaxies out to a redshift of 0.1. The HI observations are from the first epoch (178 hours) of the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). Our sample is HI biased and consists of ten late-type galaxies with HI masses that range from $1.8\times10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$ to $1.1\times10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. We find that although the majority of galaxies show irregularities in the morphology and kinematics, they generally follow the scaling relations found in larger samples. We find that the HI and H${\alpha}$ velocities reach the flat part of the rotation curve. We identify the large-scale structure in the nearby CHILES volume using DisPerSE with the spectroscopic catalog from SDSS. We explore the gaseous properties of the galaxies as a function of location in the cosmic web. We also compare the angular momentum vector (spin) of the galaxies to the orientation of the nearest cosmic web filament. H2O (22 GHz) and SiO masers (43, 86, 129 GHz) in the bipolar proto-planetary nebula OH231.8+4.2 were simultaneously monitored using the 21-m antennas of the Korean VLBI Network in 2009-2015. Both species exhibit periodic flux variations that correlate with the central star's optical light curve, with a phase delay of up to 0.15 for the maser flux variations with respect to the optical light curve. The flux densities of SiO v = 2, J = 1-0 and H2O masers decrease with time, implying that they may disappear in 10-20 years. However, there seems to have been a transient episode of intense H2O maser emission around 2010. We also found a systematic behaviour in the velocity profiles of these masers. The velocities of the H2O maser components appear to be remarkably constant, suggesting ballistic motion for the bipolar outflow in this nebula. On the other hand, those of the SiO maser clumps show a systematic radial acceleration of the individual clumps, converging to the outflow velocity of the H2O maser clumps. Measuring the full widths at zero power of the detected lines, we estimated the expansion velocities of the compact bipolar outflow traced by H2O maser and SiO thermal line, and discussed the possibility of the expanding SiO maser region in the equatorial direction. All of our analyses support that the central host star of OH231.8 is close to the tip of the AGB phase, and that the mass-loss rate recently started to decrease because of incipient post-AGB evolution., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are brief radio emissions from distant astronomical sources. Some are known to repeat, but most are single bursts. Non-repeating FRB observations have had insufficient positional accuracy to localize them to an individual host galaxy. We report the interferometric localization of the single pulse FRB 180924 to a position 4 kpc from the center of a luminous galaxy at redshift 0.3214. The burst has not been observed to repeat. The properties of the burst and its host are markedly different from the only other accurately localized FRB source. The integrated electron column density along the line of sight closely matches models of the intergalactic medium, indicating that some FRBs are clean probes of the baryonic component of the cosmic web., Comment: Published online in Science 27 June 2019

We report the discovery of four Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) in the ongoing SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts (SUPERB) at the Parkes Radio Telescope: FRBs 150610, 151206, 151230 and 160102. Our real-time discoveries have enabled us to conduct extensive, rapid multi-messenger follow-up at 12 major facilities sensitive to radio, optical, X-ray, gamma-ray photons and neutrinos on time scales ranging from an hour to a few months post-burst. No counterparts to the FRBs were found and we provide upper limits on afterglow luminosities. None of the FRBs were seen to repeat. Formal fits to all FRBs show hints of scattering while their intrinsic widths are unresolved in time. FRB 151206 is at low Galactic latitude, FRB 151230 shows a sharp spectral cutoff, and FRB 160102 has the highest dispersion measure (DM = $2596.1\pm0.3$ pc cm$^{-3}$) detected to date. Three of the FRBs have high dispersion measures (DM >$1500$ pc cm$^{-3}$), favouring a scenario where the DM is dominated by contributions from the Intergalactic Medium. The slope of the Parkes FRB source counts distribution with fluences $>2$ Jyms is $\alpha=-2.2^{+0.6}_{-1.2}$ and still consistent with a Euclidean distribution ($\alpha=-3/2$). We also find that the all-sky rate is $1.7^{+1.5}_{-0.9}\times10^3$FRBs/($4\pi$ sr)/day above $\sim2$ Jyms and there is currently no strong evidence for a latitude-dependent FRB sky-rate., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures and accepted for publication in MNRAS

This White Paper details the intentions and plans of the East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) community for pushing the frontiers of millimeter/submillimeter VLBI. To this end, we shall endeavor to actively promote coordinated efforts in the East Asia region. Our goal is to establish firm collaborations among the East Asia VLBI community in partnership with related institutes in North America and Europe and to expand existing global mm/submm VLBI arrays for (a) exploring the vicinity of black holes with an ultimate angular resolution down to 1~R$_{S}$ (Schwarzschild radius) and (b) investigating the dynamics of circumstellar gas in star-forming regions and late-type stars, and circumnuclear gas around active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In the first half of this White Paper, we highlight scientific accomplishments of the East Asia (EA) VLBI community. Various VLBI research results on M87, Sgr A*, blazars, narrow-line Seyfert~1 galaxies, and compact symmetric objects are described, and future visions of our VLBI science are briefly presented. Maser science of star formation, stellar evolution, and physics of accretion disks around AGNs are also discussed. A new vision for conducting multi-transition maser studies using mm/submm VLBI together with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is described. In the second half of this White Paper, we describe the EA community's vision for using mm/submm VLBI arrays in the framework or extended version of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA). We report on the measurement of the trigonometric parallaxes of 1612 MHz hydroxyl masers around two asymptotic giant branch stars, WX Psc and OH138.0+7.2, using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array with in-beam phase referencing calibration. We obtained a 3-sigma upper limit of <=5.3 mas on the parallax of WX Psc, corresponding to a lower limit distance estimate of >~190 pc. The obtained parallax of OH138.0+7.2 is 0.52+/-0.09 mas (+/-18%), corresponding to a distance of 1.9(+0.4,-0.3) kpc, making this the first hydroxyl maser parallax below one milliarcsecond. We also introduce a new method of error analysis for detecting systematic errors in the astrometry. The Zadko Telescope is a 1 m f/4 Cassegrain telescope, situated in the state of Western Australia about 80 km north of Perth. The facility plays a niche role in Australian astronomy, as it is the only meter class facility in Australia dedicated to automated follow-up imaging of alerts or triggers received from different external instruments/detectors spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Furthermore the location of the facility at a longitude not covered by other meter class facilities provides an important resource for time critical projects. This paper reviews the status of the Zadko facility and science projects since it began robotic operations in March 2010. We report on major upgrades to the infrastructure and equipment (2012-2014) that has resulted in significantly improved robotic operations. Secondly, we review the core science projects, which include automated rapid follow-up of gamma ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows, imaging of neutrino counterpart candidates from the ANTARES neutrino observatory, photometry of rare (Barbarian) asteroids, supernovae searches in nearby galaxies. Finally, we discuss participation in newly commencing international projects, including the optical follow-up of gravitational wave candidates from the U.S. and European gravitational wave observatory network, and present first tests for very low latency follow-up of fast radio bursts. In the context of these projects, we outline plans for a future upgrade that will optimise the facility for alert triggered imaging from the radio, optical, high-energy, neutrino and gravitational wave bands., Comment: Post-review version submitted to PASA

Massive stars, multiple stellar systems and clusters are born from the gravitational collapse of massive dense gaseous clumps, and the way these systems form strongly depends on how the parent clump fragments into cores during collapse. Numerical simulations show that magnetic fields may be the key ingredient in regulating fragmentation. Here we present ALMA observations at ~0.25'' resolution of the thermal dust continuum emission at ~278 GHz towards a turbulent, dense, and massive clump, IRAS 16061-5048c1, in a very early evolutionary stage. The ALMA image shows that the clump has fragmented into many cores along a filamentary structure. We find that the number, the total mass and the spatial distribution of the fragments are consistent with fragmentation dominated by a strong magnetic field. Our observations support the theoretical prediction that the magnetic field plays a dominant role in the fragmentation process of massive turbulent clump., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 appendices (4 pages and 2 figures in the main text). The first observations by a worldwide network of advanced interferometric gravitational wave detectors offer a unique opportunity for the astronomical community. At design sensitivity, these facilities will be able to detect coalescing binary neutron stars to distances approaching 400 Mpc, and neutron star-black hole systems to 1 Gpc. Both of these sources are associated with gamma ray bursts which are known to emit across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Gravitational wave detections provide the opportunity for "multi-messenger" observations, combining gravitational wave with electromagnetic, cosmic ray or neutrino observations. This review provides an overview of how Australian astronomical facilities and collaborations with the gravitational wave community can contribute to this new era of discovery, via contemporaneous follow-up observations from the radio to the optical and high energy. We have conducted the first parallax and proper motion measurements of 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission using the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA). The parallax of G339.884$-$1.259 measured from five epochs of observations is 0.48$\pm $0.08 mas, corresponding to a distance of $2.1^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ kpc, placing it in the Scutum spiral arm. This is consistent (within the combined uncertainty) with the kinematic distance estimate for this source at 2.5$\pm $0.5 kpc using the latest Solar and Galactic rotation parameters. We find from the Lyman continuum photon flux that the embedded core of the young star is of spectral type B1, demonstrating that luminous 6.7 GHz methanol masers can be associated with high-mass stars towards the lower end of the mass range.

(Abridged) Aims. To investigate the first stages of the process of high-mass star formation, we selected a sample of massive clumps previously observed with the SEST at 1.2 mm and with the ATNF ATCA at 1.3 cm. We want to characterize the physical conditions in such sources, and test whether their properties depend on the evolutionary stage of the clump. Methods. With ATCA we observed the selected sources in the NH3(1,1) and (2,2) transitions and in the 22 GHz H2O maser line. Ammonia lines are a good temperature probe that allow us to accurately determine the mass and the column-, volume-, and surface densities of the clumps. We also collected all data available to construct the spectral energy distribution of the individual clumps and to determine if star formation is already occurring, through observations of its most common signposts, thus putting constraints on the evolutionary stage of the source. We fitted the spectral energy distribution between 1.2 mm and 70 microns with a modified black body to derive the dust temperature and independently determine the mass. Results. The clumps are cold (T~10-30 K), massive (M~10^2-10^3 Mo), and dense (n(H2)>~10^5 cm^-3) and they have high column densities (N(H2)~10^23 cm^-2). All clumps appear to be potentially able to form high-mass stars. The most massive clumps appear to be gravitationally unstable, if the only sources of support against collapse are turbulence and thermal pressure, which possibly indicates that the magnetic field is important in stabilizing them. Conclusions. After investigating how the average properties depend on the evolutionary phase of the source, we find that the temperature and central density progressively increase with time. Sources likely hosting a ZAMS star show a steeper radial dependence of the volume density and tend to be more compact than starless clumps., Comment: Published in A&A, Vol. 556, A16

High precision astrometric Space Very Long Baseline Interferometry (S-VLBI) at the low end of the conventional frequency range, i.e. 20cm, is a requirement for a number of high priority science goals. These are headlined by obtaining trigonometric parallax distances to pulsars in Pulsar--Black Hole pairs and OH masers anywhere in the Milky Way Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. We propose a solution for the most difficult technical problems in S-VLBI by the MultiView approach where multiple sources, separated by several degrees on the sky, are observed simultaneously. We simulated a number of challenging S-VLBI configurations, with orbit errors up to 8m in size and with ionospheric atmospheres consistant with poor conditions. In these simulations we performed MultiView analysis to achieve the required science goals. This approach removes the need for beam switching requiring a Control Moment Gyro, and the space and ground infrastructure required for high quality orbit reconstruction of a space-based radio telescope. This will dramatically reduce the complexity of S-VLBI missions which implement the phase-referencing technique., Comment: Accepted in AJ

We have carried out full imaging simulation studies to explore the impact of frequency standards in millimeter and sub-millimeter Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), focusing on the coherence time and sensitivity. In particular, we compare the performance of the H-maser, traditionally used in VLBI, to that of ultra-stable cryocooled sapphire oscillators over a range of observing frequencies, weather conditions and analysis strategies. Our simulations show that at the highest frequencies, the losses induced by H-maser instabilities are comparable to those from high quality tropospheric conditions. We find significant benefits in replacing H-masers with cryocooled sapphire oscillator based frequency references in VLBI observations at frequencies above 175 GHz in sites which have the best weather conditions; at 350 GHz we estimate a 20-40% increase in sensitivity, over that obtained when the sites have H-masers, for coherence losses of 20-10%, respectively. Maximum benefits are to be expected by using colocated Water Vapour Radiometers for atmospheric correction. In this case, we estimate a 60-120% increase in sensitivity over the H-maser at 350 GHz.

Infrared-dark high-mass clumps are among the most promising objects to study the initial conditions of the formation process of high-mass stars and rich stellar clusters. In this work, we have observed the (3-2) rotational transition of C18O with the APEX telescope, and the (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions of NH3 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array in 21 infrared-dark clouds already mapped in the 1.2 mm continuum, with the aim of measuring basic chemical and physical parameters such as the CO depletion factor (fD), the gas kinetic temperature and the gas mass. In particular, the C18O (3-2) line allows us to derive fD in gas at densities higher than that traced by the (1-0) and (2-1) lines, typically used in previous works. We have detected NH3 and C18O in all targets. The clumps possess mass, H2 column and surface densities consistent with being potentially the birthplace of high-mass stars. We have measured fD in between 5 and 78, with a mean value of 32 and a median of 29. These values are, to our knowledge, larger than the typical CO depletion factors measured towards infrared-dark clouds and high-mass dense cores, and are comparable to or larger than the values measured in low-mass pre-stellar cores close to the onset of the gravitational collapse. This result suggests that the earliest phases of the high-mass star and stellar cluster formation process are characterised by fD larger than in low-mass pre-stellar cores. Thirteen out of 21 clumps are undetected in the 24 {\mu}m Spitzer images, and have slightly lower kinetic temperatures, masses and H2 column densities with respect to the eight Spitzer-bright sources. Space Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (S-VLBI) observations at high frequencies hold the prospect of achieving the highest angular resolutions and astrometric accuracies, resulting from the long baselines between ground and satellite telescopes. Nevertheless, space-specific issues, such as limited accuracy in the satellite orbit reconstruction and constraints on the satellite antenna pointing operations, limit the application of conventional phase referencing. We investigate the feasibility of an alternative technique, source frequency phase referencing (SFPR), to the S-VLBI domain. With these investigations we aim to contribute to the design of the next-generation of S-VLBI missions. We have used both analytical and simulation studies to characterize the performance of SFPR in S-VLBI observations, applied to astrometry and increased coherence time, and compared these to results obtained using conventional phase referencing. The observing configurations use the specifications of the ASTRO-G mission for their starting point. Our results show that the SFPR technique enables astrometry at 43 GHz, using alternating observations with 22 GHz, regardless of the orbit errors, for most weathers and under a wide variety of conditions. The same applies to the increased coherence time for the detection of weak sources. Our studies show that the capability to carry out simultaneous dual frequency observations enables the application to higher frequencies, and a general improvement of the performance in all cases, hence we recommend its consideration for S-VLBI programs.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a 36-element array with a 30-square-degree field of view being built at the proposed SKA site in Western Australia. We are conducting a Design Study for pulsar observations with ASKAP, planning both timing and search observations. IRAS 20126+4104 is one of the best candidates for a high-mass (proto)star surrounded by an accretion disk. Such a fact may be used to set constraints on theories of high-mass star formation, but requires confirmation that the mass and luminosity of IRAS 20126+4104 are indeed typical of a B0.5 star, which in turn requires an accurate estimate of the distance. We used the Very Long Baseline Array and the European VLBI Network to observe the 22.2 GHz water and 6.7 GHz methanol masers in IRAS 20126+4104 at a number of epochs suitably distributed in time. The absolute positions of the maser features were established with respect to reference quasars, which allowed us to derive absolute proper motions. From the parallax of the water masers we obtain a distance of 1.64 \pm 0.05 kpc, which is very similar to the value adopted so far in the literature (1.7 kpc) and confirms that IRAS 20126+4104 is a high-mass (proto)star. From the methanol masers we derive the component in the plane of the sky of the systemic velocity of the disk+star system (-16 km/s in right-ascension and +7.6 km/s in declination). Accurate knowledge of the distance and systemic velocity allows us to improve on the model fit to the water maser jet presented in a previous study. Finally, we identify two groups of methanol maser features, one undergoing rotation in the disk and possibly distributed along a narrow ring centered on the star, the other characterised by relative proper motions indicating that the features are moving away from the disk, perpendicular to it. We are developing a purely commensal survey experiment for fast (<5s) transient radio sources. Short-timescale transients are associated with the most energetic and brightest single events in the Universe. Our objective is to cover the enormous volume of transients parameter space made available by ASKAP, with an unprecedented combination of sensitivity and field of view. Fast timescale transients open new vistas on the physics of high brightness temperature emission, extreme states of matter and the physics of strong gravitational fields. In addition, the detection of extragalactic objects affords us an entirely new and extremely sensitive probe on the huge reservoir of baryons present in the IGM. We outline here our approach to the considerable challenge involved in detecting fast transients, particularly the development of hardware fast enough to dedisperse and search the ASKAP data stream at or near real-time rates. Through CRAFT, ASKAP will provide the testbed of many of the key technologies and survey modes proposed for high time resolution science with the SKA., Comment: accepted for publication in PASA

We revisit the "Cluster-Cluster" or multi-view Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI) technique from the perspective of its synergy with the multi-beam features inherent in the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)and its potential to improve the outcomes of VLBI observations with ASKAP. We include a list of candidate VLBI sites that already support or can be upgraded to support multi-view VLBI located in Australia and overseas, and which have common visibility with ASKAP. The results of our previous "cluster-cluster" observations at 1.6 GHz demonstrated the advantages of this configuration to calibrate the ionospheric distortions responsible for the loss of positional accuracy at low frequencies, using multiple calibrators in a range between 1 to 6 degrees away from the target. Therefore, we conclude that joint observations of ASKAP with other multi-view sites using "cluster-cluster" techniques would improve the outcomes of the high spatial resolution component of ASKAP applied to astrometric projects, achieving higher precision for many more targets, and with lower detection thresholds. Also very wide-field VLBI mapping becomes a possibility. The role of magnetic fields during the protostellar phase of high-mass star-formation is a debated topic. In particular, it is still unclear how magnetic fields influence the formation and dynamic of disks and outflows. Most current information on magnetic fields close to high-mass protostars comes from H2O and OH maser observations. Recently, the first 6.7 GHz methanol maser polarization observations were made, and they reveal strong and ordered magnetic fields. The morphology of the magnetic field during high-mass star-formation needs to be investigated on small scales, which can only be done using very long baseline interferometry observations. The massive star-forming regionW75N contains three radio sources and associated masers, while a large-scale molecular bipolar outflow is also present. Polarization observations of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers at high angular resolution probe the strength and structure of the magnetic field and determine its relation to the outflow. Eight of the European VLBI network antennas were used to measure the linear polarization and Zeeman-splitting of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers in the star-forming region W75N. We detected 10 methanol maser features, 4 of which were undetected in previous work. All arise near the source VLA1 of W75N. The linear polarization of the masers reveals a tightly ordered magnetic field over more than 2000 AU around VLA1 that is exactly aligned with the large-scale molecular outflow. This is consistent with the twisted magnetic field model proposed for explaining dust polarization observations. The Zeeman-splitting measured on 3 of the maser features indicates a dynamically important magnetic field in the maser region of the order of 50mG. In February 1997, the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-bourne element for the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) mission. A significant fraction of the mission time was to be dedicated to the VSOP Survey of bright compact Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at 5 GHz, which was lead by ISAS. The VSOP Survey Sources are an unbiased dataset of 294 targets, of which 82% were successfully observed. These are now undergoing statistical analysis to tease out the characteristics of typical AGN sources. Pulsar timing at the Mt Pleasant observatory focused on Vela, which could be tracked for 18 hours of the day. These nearly continuous timing records extend over 24 years allowing a great insight into details of timing noise, micro glitches and other more exotic effects. It has been found that the spin up for the Vela pulsar occurs instantaneously to within the uncertainties of the data. Work has been on-going for the development of the required code for full polarisation processing of VLBI data using some new antennae mounts. The extensions of AIPS allows the support of two new mount types; the left-handed and right-handed Nasmyth antennae (Pico Veleta in the GMVA and Yebes-40m in the EVN) and the EW-mount (Hobart in the LBA). The data handling process is seamless, once the correct mount type has been selected. All subsequent calls to the parallactic angle subroutine PARANG will return the feed angles for Left or Right Nasmyth or EW-mount. Oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are intense emitters of SiO and H$_2$O maser lines at 43 (J=1-0, v=1 and 2) and 22 GHz, respectively. VLBI observations of the maser emission provides a unique tool to sample the innermost layers of the circumstellar envelopes in AGB stars. Nevertheless, the difficulties in achieving astrometrically aligned v=1 and v=2 SiO maser maps have traditionally prevented a unique interpretation of the observations in terms of physical underlying conditions, which depend on the nature of the SiO pumping mechanism. We have carried out observations of the SiO and H$_2$O maser emission towards RLMi, using the astrometric capabilities of VERA. Due to the too-weak emission of the reference calibrator we had to develop a special method to accurately relate the coordinates for both transitions. We present relative astrometrically aligned v=1 and v=2 J=1-0 SiO maser maps, at multiple epochs, and discuss the astrophysical results. The incorporation of astrometric information into the maps of SiO masers challenges the weak points in the current theoretical models, which will need further refinements to address the observations results., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

[ABRIDGED VERSION] The future of cm and m-wave astronomy lies with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a telescope under development by a consortium of 17 countries. The SKA will be 50 times more sensitive than any existing radio facility. A majority of the key science for the SKA will be addressed through large-area imaging of the Universe at frequencies from 300 MHz to a few GHz. The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is aimed squarely in this frequency range, and achieves instantaneous wide-area imaging through the development and deployment of phase-array feed systems on parabolic reflectors. This large field-of-view makes ASKAP an unprecedented synoptic telescope poised to achieve substantial advances in SKA key science. The central core of ASKAP will be located at the Murchison Radio Observatory in inland Western Australia, one of the most radio-quiet locations on the Earth and one of the sites selected by the international community as a potential location for the SKA. Following an introductory description of ASKAP, this document contains 7 chapters describing specific science programmes for ASKAP. The combination of location, technological innovation and scientific program will ensure that ASKAP will be a world-leading radio astronomy facility, closely aligned with the scientific and technical direction of the SKA. We investigate class II methanol masers and the environment in which they form with the Long Baseline Array (LBA). Using full polarisation VLBI, we're able to measure the magnetic field directions so as to distinguish between the two main models of the environment in which methanol masers form: disks or shocks. We present polarised images of the methanol maser source G339.88-1.2, made with the LBA at 6.7-GHz. With these first polarisation maps made with the LBA, which successfully reproduce observations with the ATCA confirming the new AIPS code, a new technique for Southern VLBI is opened. The magnetic field directions found are inconstant with methanol masers arising in disks for the majority of the emission.

In February 1997, the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-bourne element for the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) mission. Approximately twenty-five percent of the mission time was dedicated to the VSOP Survey of bright compact Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at 5 GHz. This paper, the fifth in the series, presents images and models for the remaining 140 sources not included in Paper III, which contained 102 sources. For most sources, the plots of the uv-coverage, the visibility amplitude versus uv-distance, and the high resolution image are presented. Model fit parameters to the major radio components are determined, and the brightness temperature of the core component for each source is calculated. In February 1997 the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-borne element for the VSOP mission. HALCA provided linear baselines three-times greater than that of ground arrays, thus providing higher resolution and higher AGN brightness temperature measurements and limits. Twenty-five percent of the scientific time of the mission was devoted to the ``VSOP survey'' of bright, compact, extra-galactic radio sources at 5 GHz. A complete list of 294 survey targets were selected from pre-launch surveys, 91% of which were observed during the satellite's lifetime. The major goals of the VSOP Survey are statistical in nature: to determine the brightness temperature and approximate structure, to provide a source list for use with future space VLBI missions, and to compare radio properties with other data throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. All the data collected have now been analysed and is being prepared for the final image Survey paper. We report on our experiences using the Metsahovi Radio Observatory's (MRO) VLBI Standard Interface (VSI, Whitney 2002) recorder in a number of astronomical applications. The PC-EVN device is a direct memory access (DMA) interface which allows 512 megabit per second (Mbps) or better recording to "off the shelf" PC components. We have used this setup to record at 640 Mbps for a pulsar coherent dispersion system and at 256 Mpbs for a global VLBI session. We have also demonstrated recording at 512 Mbps and will shortly form cross correlations between the CPSR-II and the PC-EVN systems., Comment: 4 pages. 3 figures. Interstellar scintillation has been conclusively demonstrated to be the principal cause of the intraday variability (IDV) observed in the centimetre-wavelength emission of many AGN. A few sources show large amplitude modulation in their flux density on a timescale of hours. However, the majority of IDV sources exhibit variability on timescales of a day or more. On timescales of a year some sources have been found to show an annual cycle in the pattern of their variability. Such an annual cycle occurs because the relative speeds of the Earth and the interstellar medium change as the Earth orbits the Sun. To search for these annual variations as well as to follow the source evolution, requires a dedicated instrument; the necessary amounts of observing time are beyond the capability of the national facility instruments. Here we describe the scientific motivation for, and present an outline of the COSMIC (Continuous Single dish Monitoring of Intraday variability at Ceduna) project which uses the University of Tasmania's 30 m diameter radio telescope at Ceduna, which has been monitoring the flux density of a number of the stronger southern scintillators at 6.65 GHz since March 2003., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in AJ

The VSOP (VLBI Space Observatory Programme) mission is a Japanese-led project to study radio sources with sub-milliarcsec angular resolution, using an orbiting 8-m telescope on board the satellite HALCA with a global earth-based array of telescopes. A major program is the 5 GHz VSOP Survey Program, which we supplement here with VLBA observations to produce a complete and flux-density limited sample. Using statistical methods of analysis of the observed visibility amplitude versus projected (u,v) spacing, we have determined the angular size and brightness temperature distribution of bright AGN radio cores. On average, the cores have a diameter (full-width, half-power) of 0.20 mas which contains about 20% of the total source emission, and (14+/-6)% of the cores are <0.04 mas in size. About (20+/-5)% of the radio cores have a source frame brightness temperature 10^{13}K, and (3+/-2)% have 10^{14}K. A model of the high brightness temperature tail suggests that the radio cores have a brightness temperatures approx 10^{12}K, and are beamed toward the observer with an average bulk motion of v/c=0.993 +/- 0.004., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 1 table Accepted ApJ

The VSOP mission is a Japanese-led project to study radio sources with sub-milliarcsec resolution using an orbiting 8 m telescope, HALCA, along with global arrays of Earth-based telescopes. Approximately 25% of the observing time is devoted to a survey of compact AGN which are stronger than 1 Jy at 5 GHz-the VSOP AGN Survey. This paper, the third in the series, presents the results from the analysis of the first 102 Survey sources. We present high resolution images and plots of visibility amplitude versus projected baseline length. In addition, model-fit parameters to the primary radio components are listed, and from these the angular size and brightness temperature for the radio cores are calculated. For those sources for which we were able to determine the source frame core brightness temperature, a significant fraction (53 out of 98) have a source frame core brightness temperature in excess of 10^12 K. The maximum source frame core brightness temperature we observed was 1.2 X 10^13 K. Explaining a brightness temperature this high requires an extreme amount of relativistic Doppler beaming. Since the maximum brightness temperature one is able to determine using only ground-based arrays is of the order of 10^12 K, our results confirm the necessity of using space VLBI to explore the extremely high brightness temperature regime., Comment: 33 Pages, 4 Figures (included separately as jpg files). We present observations of the Vela X region at 31 GHz using the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI). We find a strong compact radio source (5.9'x4.1', FWHM) about the Vela pulsar, which we associate with the Vela pulsar wind nebula (PWN) recently discovered at lower radio-frequencies. The CBI's 4' resolution for a 45' field of view allows the PWN to be studied in the large-scale context of Vela X. Filamentary structure in Vela X, which stands out in lower frequency maps, is very low-level at 31 GHz. By combining the 10 CBI channels, which cover 26-36 GHz, and 8.4 GHz archive data, we study the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the PWN and the brightest filaments. Our results show that the spectral index alpha (F_{nu} propto nu^alpha) of the PWN is flat, or even marginally positive, with a value of alpha_{8.4}^{31}=0.10+-0.06, while the Vela X filamentary structure has a negative spectral index of alpha_{8.4}^{31}=-0.28+-0.09. The SED inhomogeneity observed in Vela X suggests different excitation processes between the PWN and the filaments. We investigate whether the PWN's flat spectrum is a consequence of variability or truly reflects the SED of the object. The peak of the PWN at 31 GHz is 80''+-20'' south-west of the peak at 8.4 GHz. This shift is confirmed by comparing the 31 GHz CBI image with higher resolution 5 GHz Australia Telescope Compact Array observations, and is likely to be due to SED variations within the PWN. We have used the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) to produce milliarcsecond images of five sites of methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz. These are all sites that have linear morphologies at arcsecond resolutions, which have been hypothesised to be due to the masers forming in edge-on circumstellar disks. We find that a simple disk model cannot explain the observations. We discuss various alternatives, and suggest a new model which explains how linear velocity gradients can be produced in methanol masers that arise in planar shocks propagating nearly perpendicular to the line of sight., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

The Vela pulsar is the brightest pulsar at radio wavelengths. It was the object that told us (via its glitching) that pulsars were solid rotating bodies not oscillating ones. Along with the Crab pulsar is it the source of many of the models of pulsar behavior. Therefore it is of vital importance to know how far away it is, and its origin. The proper motion and parallax for the Vela pulsar have been derived from 2.3 and 8.4 GHz Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. The data spans 6.8 years and consists of eleven epochs. We find a proper motion of $\mu_{\alpha {\rm cos}\delta}= -49.61 \pm 0.06, \mu_\delta= 29.8 \pm 0.1$ \myr and a parallax of $3.4 \pm 0.2$ mas, which is equivalent to a distance of $293_{-17}^{+19}$ pc. When we subtract out the galactic rotation and solar peculiar velocity we find $\mu_* = 45 \pm 1.3$ \myr with a position angle (PA) of $301^\circ\pm1.8$ which implies that the proper motion has a small but significant offset from the X-ray nebula's symmetry axis., Comment: Corrected for some minor errors and referee's comments

We have discovered that the radio nebula surrounding the Vela pulsar covers a much wider extent than previously reported, with two lobes to the North and South of the pulsar. Indications of this object have been reported previously, but its symmetric morphology around the pulsar and other details had not been identified as they were hidden due to poor sensitivity to low spatial frequencies. The structure is highly polarised and the polarisation vectors, once corrected for Faraday rotation, reveal symmetry with respect to the spin axis of the pulsar. The X-ray emission found by Chandra lies at the centre of this structure, in a region which has no detectable excess of radio emission. We estimate total fluxes and regional fluxes from the Northern and Southern lobes, plus the X-ray region at four radio frequencies; 1.4, 2.4, 5 and 8.5 GHz. Two daily pulsar monitoring programs are progressing at the Mount Pleasant Observatory, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. A new system involving the 26-metre radio telescope monitors 10 young pulsars daily and is focussed on near-real-time glitch finding. This will allow Target of Opportunity observations to measure post-glitch heating of the neutron star surface (Helfand, Gotthelf, & Halpern 2000). The 14-metre continues its 21st year of daily monitoring of the Vela pulsar with a recent comprehensive frontend upgrade. This is prior to an upgrade of the backend equipment currently in progress. The 14-metre observed the most recent glitch of the Vela pulsar in January 2000 to the highest time resolution of any glitch and revealed a particularly short-term decay component (Dodson, McCulloch, & Lewis 2002). We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make a sensitive (5-$\sigma$ $\simeq$ 100 mJy) search for maser emission from the 4765-MHz $^2\Pi_{1/2}$ F=1$\to$0 transition of OH. Fifty five star formation regions were searched and maser emission with a peak flux density in excess of 100 mJy was detected toward fourteen sites, with ten of these being new discoveries. In addition we observed the 4750-MHz $^2\Pi_{1/2}$ F=1$\to$1 transition towards a sample of star formation regions known to contain 1720-MHz OH masers, detecting marginal maser emission from G348.550-0.979. If confirmed this would be only the second maser discovered from this transition. The occurrence of 4765-MHz OH maser emission accompanying 1720-MHz OH masers in a small number of well studied star formation regions has lead to a general perception in the literature that the two transitions favour similar physical conditions. Our search has found that the presence of the excited-state 6035-MHz OH transition is a much better predictor of 4765-MHz OH maser emission from the same region than is 1720-MHz OH maser emission. Combining our results with those of previous high resolution observations of other OH transitions we have examined the published theoretical models of OH masers and find that none of them predict any conditions in which the 1665-, 6035- and 4765-MHz transitions are simultaneously inverted. Erratum abstract: Dodson & Ellingsen (2002) included several observations with significant pointing errors, invalidating the upper limits found in these directions. These have now been reobserved or recalculated. The association of G343.1-2.3 and PSR 1706-44 has been controversial from its first proposal. In this paper we address the difficulties, and argue that the association is still likely. New evidence comes from images of G343.1-2.3 obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and the pulsar obtained using the CHANDRA X-ray observatory. Mosaicing was required to cover the full extent of G343.1-2.3, and we present the polarisation images from this experiment.
