The effects of PAR and temperature on induction of Chl a fluorescence were observed on leaves of 20 plant species in their natural environments. Light affects the acceptor side of PS2. Temperature regulation of PS2 activity proceeds by affecting the RC and acceptor side of PS2. The impact of higher temperature can be attributed to greater fluidity of the thylakoid membranes. Photosynthetically active radiation and temperature under the given conditions are in highly significant positive correlation, so it is not clear whether this impact is due to individual or complementary mechanisms of PAR and/or temperature affecting photosynthetic processes in the thylakoid membranes. Also, it is not clear whether species specificity has any significance in the plant photosynthetic response to changes of PAR and temperature. Changes of PAR and temperature during induction of Chl a fluorescence do not affect Pindex, as a parameter of total photosynthesis.

Differential response of bread wheat seedlings to contrasting water regimes can be used to determine traits related to drought tolerance. The F1 offspring from eight crosses and 11 selected parental genotypes were simultaneously grown in hydroponic cultivation-polyethylene glycol (PEG) induced drought stress vs. control conditions. Criteria for selection of maternal and paternal genotypes were desirable traits in terms of increased tolerance to drought: longer stem length, longer primary root, large number of seminal roots, large root dry mass and stem dry mass, beginning of root branching at the greatest possible distance from beginning of the root,contrasting angle of seminal roots. The traits were measured on 14 day old seedlings: primary root length (PRL),distance to the first branch on the primary root (DFBR), number of seminal roots (NSR), total seminal root length (TSRL), angle of seminal roots (ASR), stem length (SL), root dry mass (RDM), stem dry mass (SDM), and the ratio of root dry mass to stem dry mass (RDM/SDM). Drought stress led to a decrease in the mean values of all root and stem traits by 11% on average, except for RDM/SDM which was increased. The most sensitive trait to drought stress was DFBR (25% reduction), causing root systems to branch at a shallower depth. In conditions of induced drought stress, the strongest statistically significant correlation was found among RDM and RDM/SDM (r = 0.794), SL and ASR (r = 0.708), RDM and TSRL (r = 0.673). The stress tolerance index had the strongest positive correlation with the SDM, PRL, TSRL, SL, and the stress susceptibility index with the NSR. The highest heterosis mean value was observed for PRL (24.6%) and for SL (15.6%) under drought stress. The different directions of average heterosis in induced drought stress vs. control conditions were observed for DFBR, RDM, and SDM, indicating differential traits to account for when planning breeding bread wheat for drought tolerance.Selected traits as criteria for selection and favorable combinations can be incorporated into pre-breeding and breeding schemes, directly or indirectly, aiming to achieve drought tolerance. Abstract The influence of epigenetics is evident in many fields of medicine today. This is also true in placentology, where versatile epigenetic mechanisms that regulate expression of genes have shown to have important influence on trophoblast implantation and placentation. Such gene regulation can be established in different ways and on different molecular levels, the most common being the DNA methylation. DNA methylation has been shown today as an important predictive component in assessing clinical prognosis of certain malignant tumors; in addition, it opens up new possibilities for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis utilizing cell-free fetal DNA methods. By using a well known demethylating agent 5-azacytidine in pregnant rat model, we have been able to change gene expression and, consequently, the processes of trophoblast differentiation and placental development. In this review, we describe how changes in gene methylation effect trophoblast development and placentation and offer our perspective on use of trophoblast epigenetic research for better understanding of not only placenta development but cancer cell growth and invasion as well.

Assimilated carbon during vegetative and early reproductive growth in wheat is temporarily stored in stem internodes and leaf sheaths (LSs), and can later be remobilized and transported to developing grain. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of several peduncle (the uppermost internode) morpho-anatomical and biochemical traits on grain weight, and to assess the contribution of the peduncle water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) reserves shortly after anthesis to its variation. In 2-year field trials, 61 wheat genotypes were used (27 F4:5 families, 17 parents used for the crosses and the 17 current best standards), comparing intact control plants (CP) with plants that were defoliated (DP) by cutting off all leaf blades 10 days after anthesis. Estimated contributions of peduncle (culm (C) and flag LS) assimilate reserves to grain weight/spike were from 0·06 to 0·31 and from 0·11 to 0·45 in CP and DP plants, respectively. In both CP and DP plants, a higher contribution was from the LS than from the C. High peduncle reserve mobilization efficiency, a longer exposed part of the peduncle and larger C storage capacity (through higher parenchyma and/or lower lignified area) were of specific benefit for maintaining grain weight in defoliated plants. F4:5 families had higher transport capacity in the peduncle, but without any improvement in WSC-related traits compared with the best standards. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Improving resistance to water and osmotic stresses at the seedling stage is becoming a much more important target for wheat breeders due to an increase in the frequency and severity of drought occurrences at the crop establishment and tillering phases in many wheat growing areas of the world. Ninety-six diverse wheat genotypes were laboratory tested for germination and growth response under osmotic stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG). Germination percentage, mean germination time, coleoptile length, shoot length and shoot growth rate were compared under stress (−0·4 MPa) and control (0·0 MPa) conditions. The same genotypes were previously grown in field trials exposed to drought stress during the anthesis and/or grain filling growth stage along with control (optimum) conditions. Grain yield (GY) and 19 other traits of agronomic importance (earliness, stem-related traits, number of kernels, mass of 1000 grains, etc.) were recorded. All seedling traits under PEG-induced water stress showed the highest relationship with the stem and stem-related traits of adult plants. To study the correlation between stress tolerance in the seedling and reproductive stages, three stress indices (tolerance index (TOL), stress susceptibility index (SSI) and stress tolerance index (STI)) for the seedling traits and GY under pre- and post-anthesis drought stress were calculated, based on a mean trait value obtained under stress and the corresponding trait value under control conditions. The ranking of the genotypes based on TOL and STI from seedling traits was found in most cases to be significantly correlated with the ranking of genotypes based on TOL and STI from GY, respectively.
