The main goal of the power system is to congregate the power demand within the power grid while maintaining economical operation, system security and minimal environmental impact. Due to the increasing demand for electrical energy, many problems have arisen with the power systems. These problems include excessive load, uneven system performance, unsatisfactory voltage profile, and an increase in network power losses. To address these issues, more generation sources and improved transmission capacity are required. In order to meet increasing electricity demand, it is more efficient to integrate a sufficient number of smaller generation units. Utilities and consumers can get the significant benefit from installation of distributed generation (DG), which reduces power losses, progress voltage profile, increases power quality and reliability, delays system updates, supports local reactive power, standby generation and peak limiting. This article aims to enrich the performance of the entire network through the best possible placement and penetration of wind energy and solar photovoltaic (PV) dispersed generation. The generation, transmission and distribution are the three main parts of the electrical networks. Now a day's electric utilities experiencing remarkable change with digitalization of their customers and systems. The de-carbonization initiatives are boosting effective use and descent growth of RES integration with grid. Last two decades electrical DN experiencing over loading, low frequency, high power loss, inadequate power generation, lack of electrical infrastructure etc directly effects on the industry production as well as national growth. Many effective methods/techniques are being adapted to cut down load shedding, voltage issues and power loss reduction. The placement of DG's, Capacitor, FACTs, DTC, AVR etc are more effective in mitigating the issues mentioned. Out of all these methods, the DTC placement is found to be more effective and its cost benefits analysis carried out to know the feasibility of the proposed methodology. In recent years, electrical networks are operating under over loaded condition due to the exponential growth in the load. Due to poor voltage regulations, lack of up-gradation in the electrical infrastructure, load shedding and stochastic loads connected in the system causes instability in the network operations. Many researchers, policy makers, power suppliers, energy managers are actively participating to find the potential solutions to address these issues. In this paper, detailed literature review is carried out to list the optimization techniques and different methods used in the minimization of power loss.
