- Abstract
To study the viscosity of bridgmanite and ferropericlase aggregate, uniaxial compression deformation experiments on pre-synthesized post-spinel phase and bridgmanite two-layered samples were conducted under top lower mantle pressure and 1773 K utilizing DT-Cup apparatus. Up to the strain of 0.25 ± 0.05, the observed comparable strain of the bridgmanite and post-spinel samples suggests the bridgmanite dominates the bulk viscosity of the post-spinel without strain localization in periclase. The microstructures of the deformed post-spinel samples show evidence of a similar strain of periclase with the bulk strain without strain partitioning. Texture analyses of bridgmanite indicate a dominant slip plane (100), with a steady state fabric strength achieved within the strain of 0.12 ± 0.01. The current experiment has provided no evidence about an onset of strain localization of ∼30 vol.% periclase at 0.25 strain. Our observations provide direct experimental verification of bridgmanite controlled rheology under low strain magnitude, which should be considered in geodynamical models which include mantle compositional and rheological evolution in the lower mantle.

Objectives: Investigate trends over time and predictors of malignancies among children and young people with HIV. Design: Pooled data from 17 cohorts in 15 countries across Europe and Thailand. Methods: Individuals diagnosed with HIV and presenting to paediatric care less than 18 years of age were included. Time at risk began at birth for children with documented vertically acquired HIV, and from first HIV-care visit for others. Children were followed until death, loss-to-follow-up, or last visit in paediatric or adult care (where data after transfer to adult care were available). Rates of reported malignancies were calculated overall and for AIDS-defining malignancies (ADM) and non-AIDS-defining malignancies (NADM) separately. Risk factors for any malignancy were explored using Poisson regression, and for mortality following a malignancy diagnosis using Cox regression. Results: Among 9632 individuals included, 140 (1.5%) were ever diagnosed with a malignancy, of which 112 (80%) were ADM. Overall, the rate of any malignancy was 1.18 per 1000 person-years; the rate of ADM decreased over time whereas the rate of NADM increased. Male sex, being from a European cohort, vertically acquired HIV, current severe immunosuppression, current viral load greater than 400 copies/ml, older age, and, for those not on treatment, earlier calendar year, were risk factors for a malignancy diagnosis. Fifty-eight (41%) individuals with a malignancy died, a median 2.4 months (IQR 0.6-8.8) after malignancy diagnosis. Conclusion: The rate of ADM has declined since widespread availability of combination ART, although of NADM, there was a small increase. Mortality following a malignancy was high, warranting further investigation.

Background In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–positive adults, low CD4 cell counts despite fully suppressed HIV-1 RNA on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. We assessed the prevalence and outcomes of poor immune response (PIR) in children receiving suppressive ART. Methods Sixteen cohorts from the European Pregnancy and Paediatric HIV Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC) contributed data. Children Results Of 2318 children included, median age was 6.4 years and 68% had advanced/severe immunosuppression at ART initiation. At 1 year of VS, 12% had PIR. In multivariable analysis, PIR was associated with older age and worse immunological stage at ART start, hepatitis B coinfection, and residing in Thailand (all P ≤ .03). Rates of AIDS/death (95% confidence interval) per 100 000 person-years were 1052 (547, 2022) among PIR versus 261 (166, 409) among immune responders; rate ratio of 4.04 (1.83, 8.92; P < .001). Conclusions One in eight children in our cohort experienced PIR despite sustained VS. While the overall rate of AIDS/death was low, children with PIR had a 4-fold increase in risk of event as compared with immune responders.

- Abstract
Hydrous Fo91 ringwoodite crystals were synthesized at 20 GPa and high-temperature conditions using a multi-anvil press. Recovered crystals were analyzed using electron microprobe analysis, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal Laue neutron diffraction, to carefully characterize the chemistry and crystallography of the samples. Analysis of the combined data sets provides evidence for the presence of tetrahedrally coordinated ferric iron and multiple hydrogen incorporation mechanisms within these blue-colored iron-bearing ringwoodite crystals. Tetrahedral ferric iron is coupled with cation disorder of silicon onto the octahedrally coordinated site. Cation disorder in mantle ringwoodite minerals may be promoted in the presence of water, which could have implications for current models of seismic velocities within the transition zone. Additionally, the presence of tetrahedrally coordinated ferric iron may cause the blue color of many ringwoodite and other high-pressure crystals.

Background. Data on durability of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) in children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are limited. We assessed time to switch to second-line therapy in 16 European countries and Thailand.Methods. Children aged = 2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors p[NRTIs] plus nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor p[NNRTI] or boosted protease inhibitor p[PI]) were included. Switch to second-line was defined as (i) change across drug class (PI to NNRTI or vice versa) or within PI class plus change of >= 1 NRTI; (ii) change from single to dual PI; or (iii) addition of a new drug class. Cumulative incidence of switch was calculated with death and loss to follow-up as competing risks.Results. Of 3668 children included, median age at ART initiation was 6.1 (interquartile range (IQR), 1.7-10.5) years. Initial regimens were 32% PI based, 34% nevirapine (NVP) based, and 33% efavirenz based. Median duration of follow-up was 5.4 (IQR, 2.9-8.3) years. Cumulative incidence of switch at 5 years was 21% (95% confidence interval, 20%-23%), with significant regional variations. Median time to switch was 30 (IQR, 16-58) months; two-thirds of switches were related to treatment failure. In multivariable analysis, older age, severe immunosuppression and higher viral load (VL) at ART start, and NVP-based initial regimens were associated with increased risk of switch.Conclusions. One in 5 children switched to a second-line regimen by 5 years of ART, with two-thirds failure related. Advanced HIV, older age, and NVP-based regimens were associated with increased risk of switch.

39. Seismic velocities of CaSiO3 perovskite can explain LLSVPs in Earth's lower mantle.

- Abstract
Seismology records the presence of various heterogeneities throughout the lower mantle1,2, but the origins of these signals—whether thermal or chemical—remain uncertain, and therefore much of the information that they hold about the nature of the deep Earth is obscured. Accurate interpretation of observed seismic velocities requires knowledge of the seismic properties of all of Earth's possible mineral components. Calcium silicate (CaSiO
3 ) perovskite is believed to be the third most abundant mineral throughout the lower mantle. Here we simultaneously measure the crystal structure and the shear-wave and compressional-wave velocities of samples of CaSiO3 perovskite, and provide direct constraints on the adiabatic bulk and shear moduli of this material. We observe that incorporation of titanium into CaSiO3 perovskite stabilizes the tetragonal structure at higher temperatures, and that the material's shear modulus is substantially lower than is predicted by computations3–5 or thermodynamic datasets6. When combined with literature data and extrapolated, our results suggest that subducted oceanic crust will be visible as low-seismic-velocity anomalies throughout the lower mantle. In particular, we show that large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) are consistent with moderate enrichment of recycled oceanic crust, and mid-mantle discontinuities can be explained by a tetragonal–cubic phase transition in Ti-bearing CaSiO3 perovskite. Unexpectedly low seismic velocities of CaSiO3 perovskite in deeply subducted oceanic crust can explain the properties of anomalous continent-sized regions in Earth's lower mantle. Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp. L.C. Rich.) cultivars resistant to spring dead (SDS) caused by Ophiosphaerella herpotricha (Fr.) Walker and winter-kill are important for residential and commercial use in transition zone climates. Field research was conducted on `Mirage', `OKS 91-11', and `Jackpot' seeded bermudagrasses [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. var. dactylon] at Stillwater, OK, between 1996 and 1999 to determine their resistance to SDS. Plots were inoculated in 1996 with O. herpotricha isolate KS 188 and mowed to a height of either 1.3 cm or 3.8 cm. The SDS necrotic patch area of all cultivars increased each year and patch area was greater in turf at the higher mowing height. OKS 91-11 had a smaller SDS necrotic patch area than the other cultivars. Mirage had necrotic patch area equal to Jackpot at 1.3 cm and less necrotic area than Jackpot at 3.8 cm. OKS 91-11 had greater shoot survival density in necrotic patches than Jackpot or Mirage in 2 of 3 yr at 1.3 cm. Cultivars did not differ in shoot survival density at 3.8 cm. Higher overall quality was provided by OKS 91-11, when compared with Mirage and Jackpot in 3 of 4 and 2 of 4 yr, respectively. Jackpot had better quality than Mirage in 2 of 4 yr. Early spring green-up was negatively correlated with SDS patch size and positively correlated with shoot survival in SDS patches. Winter-kill was positively correlated with SDS patch size and negatively correlated with shoot survival in SDS patches., SPRING DEAD SPOT is one of the most serious diseases of bermudagrass (C. dactylon and C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) in the transition zone between the cool temperate and [...]

When combined with literature data and extrapolated, our results suggest that subducted oceanic crust will be visible as low-seismic-velocity anomalies throughout the lower mantle. In particular, we show that large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) are consistent with moderate enrichment of recycled oceanic crust, and mid-mantle discontinuities can be explained by a tetragonal–cubic phase transition in Ti-bearing CaSiO3perovskite. Unexpectedly low seismic velocities of CaSiO3perovskite in deeply subducted oceanic crust can explain the properties of anomalous continent-sized regions in Earth’s lower mantle.
