We report on the colloidal stability of nanoparticles with alkanethiol shells in apolar solvents. Small angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations were used to characterize the interaction between nanoparticles in linear alkane solvents ranging from hexane to hexadecane, including \SI{4}{\nano\meter} gold cores with hexadecanethiol shells and \SI{6}{\nano\meter} cadmium selenide cores with octadecanethiol shells. We find that the agglomeration is enthalpically driven and that, contrary to what one would expect from classical colloid theory, the temperature at which the particles agglomerate increases with increasing solvent chain length. We demonstrate that the inverted trend correlates with the temperatures at which the ligands order in the different solvents, and show that the inversion is due to a combination of enthalpic and entropic effects that enhance the stability of the ordered ligand state as the solvent length increases. The world’s forests are undergoing significant changes due to loss and degradation, emphasizing the need for Near Real-Time (NRT) monitoring to prevent further damage. Traditional monitoring methods using optical imagery are hindered by cloud coverage, while newer Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems, although operational in all weather conditions, face challenges such as sensitivity to soil moisture and the need for spatial filtering to reduce speckle effects. These limitations affect the detection of small-scale forest loss, especially in seasonally variable regions like dry forests and savannas. This paper presents a SAR-based forest disturbance detection method using Bayesian inference. Unlike traditional methods, this approach maintains the native resolution of the data by avoiding spatial filtering. Forest disturbance is modelled as a change-point detection problem within a non-filtered Sentinel-1 time series, where each new observation updates the probability of forest loss by leveraging prior information and a data model. This sequential adaptation ensures robustness against variations and trends, making it effective in monitoring disturbances across diverse forest types, including areas affected by seasonality. The proposed method was tested against other NRT monitoring systems for the year 2020, using small validation polygons (under 1 hectare) in the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado savanna. Results demonstrate significant improvements in detecting small-scale disturbances and drastically reduced false alarm rates in both biomes. Notably, in the seasonality-sensitive Cerrado, our solution completely outperforms the leading and only existing optical technology.

To improve our understanding of the carbon cycle, precise estimates of forest biomass are needed. High values of dense tropical forest biomass are particularly important, as they determine uncertainties in carbon stock assessment and carbon loss due to deforestation and forest degradation. However, estimating Above Ground Biomass (AGB) of tropical forests based on remote sensing systems remains challenging, most existing satellite systems are not sensitive to AGB in the high range. In this paper, we assess the use of P-band SAR tomography technique to provide AGB with reduced uncertainties in the range of 200–400 Mg.ha−1. We present the expected contribution of the BIOMASS mission in estimating the carbon loss from deforestation and from forest degradation , and in providing the Digital Elevation Model under dense forests.

The Amazon biome, undergoing significant deforestation, requires robust monitoring systems for effective management and conservation. This study introduces DETER-RT, a novel deforestation detection system that combines the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-based DETER-R and the TropiSCO systems to enhance detection capabilities using Sentinel-1 satellite data. DETER-RT utilizes a double-threshold technique to optimize the detection of deforestation by balancing detection accuracy and minimizing false positives across different forest types and conditions in the Amazon. The new system modulates detection thresholds based on the proximity of new disturbances to previously detected deforestation, incorporating a dynamic, regionalized threshold adjustment to cater to the variable characteristics of the Amazon’s diverse forest cover. Initial results indicate that DETER-RT provides more timely and accurate warnings compared to existing methods, especially during the fire season, where its performance is less impacted by smoke and haze that typically hinder optical sensors. This approach exemplifies the integration of advanced remote sensing technologies and analytical techniques in environmental monitoring.

Most deforestation monitoring programs are based on optical images, which are severely affected by clouds, especially in tropical regions. As an alternative, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are minimally affected by atmospheric conditions. However, one of the challenges inherent in such approaches is the effect of seasonal rainforest variations over the SAR images. Recently proposed stabilization algorithms mitigate this effect with significant accuracy gains, however, at the cost of higher computational resources, needed to accommodate long temporal SAR image sequences. This work addresses this issue and presents two alternative solutions that attain similar or better accuracy at a much lower computational requirements. One solution is based on a ResUnet, while the second combines an LSTM and a UNet. Both approaches were tested using raw and stabilized pairs as well as raw sequences. Experiments have indicated that both approaches can mitigate the seasonality effect using a much shorter SAR image sequences than modern stabilization methods require. The results with the multitemporal input outperformed those with the preprocessed bitemporal set by 4.3% in Recall, 1.7% in Precision, and 2.7% in F1-Score, also delivering the best deforestation probability maps.

We review how the international modelling community, encompassing integrated assessment models, global and regional Earth system and climate models, and impact models, has worked together over the past few decades to advance understanding of Earth system change and its impacts on society and the environment and thereby support international climate policy. We go on to recommend a number of priority research areas for the coming decade, a timescale that encompasses a number of newly starting international modelling activities, as well as the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) and the second UNFCCC Global Stocktake. Progress in these priority areas will significantly advance our understanding of Earth system change and its impacts, increasing the quality and utility of science support to climate policy. We emphasize the need for continued improvement in our understanding of, and ability to simulate, the coupled Earth system and the impacts of Earth system change. There is an urgent need to investigate plausible pathways and emission scenarios that realize the Paris climate targets – for example, pathways that overshoot 1.5 or 2 °C global warming, before returning to these levels at some later date. Earth system models need to be capable of thoroughly assessing such warming overshoots – in particular, the efficacy of mitigation measures, such as negative CO2 emissions, in reducing atmospheric CO2 and driving global cooling. An improved assessment of the long-term consequences of stabilizing climate at 1.5 or 2 °C above pre-industrial temperatures is also required. We recommend Earth system models run overshoot scenarios in CO2-emission mode to more fully represent coupled climate–carbon-cycle feedbacks and, wherever possible, interactively simulate other key Earth system phenomena at risk of rapid change during overshoot. Regional downscaling and impact models should use forcing data from these simulations, so impact and regional climate projections cover a more complete range of potential responses to a warming overshoot. An accurate simulation of the observed, historical record remains a fundamental requirement of models, as does accurate simulation of key metrics, such as the effective climate sensitivity and the transient climate response to cumulative carbon emissions. For adaptation, a key demand is improved guidance on potential changes in climate extremes and the modes of variability these extremes develop within. Such improvements will most likely be realized through a combination of increased model resolution, improvement of key model parameterizations, and enhanced representation of important Earth system processes, combined with targeted use of new artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques. We propose a deeper collaboration across such efforts over the coming decade. With respect to sampling future uncertainty, increased collaboration between approaches that emphasize large model ensembles and those focussed on statistical emulation is required. We recommend an increased focus on high-impact–low-likelihood (HILL) outcomes – in particular, the risk and consequences of exceeding critical tipping points during a warming overshoot and the potential impacts arising from this. For a comprehensive assessment of the impacts of Earth system change, including impacts arising directly as a result of climate mitigation actions, it is important that spatially detailed, disaggregated information used to generate future scenarios in integrated assessment models be available for use in impact models. Conversely, there is a need to develop methods that enable potential societal responses to projected Earth system change to be incorporated into scenario development. The new models, simulations, data, and scientific advances proposed in this article will not be possible without long-term development and maintenance of a robust, globally connected infrastructure ecosystem. This system must be easily accessible and useable by modelling communities across the world, allowing the global research community to be fully engaged in developing and delivering new scientific knowledge to support international climate policy.

Abstract Digital twins of the Earth are digital representations of the Earth system, spanning scales and domains. Their purpose is to monitor, forecast and assess the Earth system and the consequences of human interventions on the Earth system. Providing users with the capability to interact with and interrogate the system, digital twins of the Earth are decision support systems for addressing environmental challenges. By informing humans of their impact on the Earth system, digital twins aspire to promote new pathways moving forward. By answering causal queries through intervention analysis, they can enhance evidence-based policy making. Existing digital twins of the Earth are primarily technological information systems that represent the physical world. However, as the social and physical worlds are intrinsically interconnected, we argue that humans must be accounted for both within and outside digital twins of the Earth: Within twins to represent human impacts and responses that are integral to the Earth system; and outside twins to govern access and development and to guide responsible use of information acquired from twins. Incorporating human interactions in digital twins of the Earth represents a transformative frontier, promising unparalleled insights into Earth system dynamics and empower humans for action.

12. Evolutionary analysis of indeterminate cytology and risk of malignancy in a thyroid nodule unit

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the evolution in the diagnosis and management of indeterminate thyroid nodules over three time periods. Methods: In total, 3020 patients with thyroid nodules underwent cytological evaluation during three periods (2006– 2008, 2012–2014, 2017–2019). The distribution of diagnostic cytology, risk of malignancy, diagnostic performance indices of fine needle aspiration (FNA), and cytologic–histologic correlation in indeterminate cytology were analyzed. Results: Only 2.2% of cytology tests were insufficient for a diagnosis. About 86.9% cytology was benign, 1.7% malignant, and 11.4% indeterminate. Indeterminate cytology rates were 15.9% (2006–2008), 10.1% (2012–2014), and 10% (2017–2019). Surgery was performed in 13% of benign cytology, resulting in malignant histology in 2.7%. All malignant and suspicious cytology underwent surgery, with malignancy confirmed in 98% and 77% of cases, respectively. All ‘indeterminate with atypia’ cytology (2006–2008) and Bethesda IV (2012–2014; 2017–2019) underwent surgery, with malignancy confirmed in 19.6%, 43.8%, and 25.7%, respectively. In the ‘indeterminate without atypia’ category (2006–2008) and Bethesda III (2012–2014; 2017–2019), diagnostic surgery was performed in 57.7%, 78.6%, and 59.4%, respectively, with malignancy confirmed in 3.3%, 20.5%, and 31.6%. The FNA sensitivity was 91.6%, with a negative predictive value greater than 96% in all periods. The specificity exceeded 75% in the last two periods. Conclusion: The Bethesda system reduces indeterminate cytology and improves the accuracy of FNA diagnosis. We reported a higher proportion of malignancy than expected in Bethesda III, underscoring the importance of having institution-specific data to guide decision-making. However, there is a need for risk stratification tools that allow for conservative management in low-risk cases.

Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) are n-on-p silicon sensors with an extra p-layer below the collection electrode which provides signal amplification. When the primary electrons reach the amplification region new electron-hole pairs are created that enhance the generated signal. The moderate gain of these sensors, together with the relatively thin active region, provide precise time information for minimum ionizing particles. To mitigate the effect of pile-up at the HL-LHC the ATLAS and CMS experiments have chosen the LGAD technology for the High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) and for the End-Cap Timing Layer (ETL), respectively. A full characterization of recent productions of LGAD sensors fabricated at CNM has been carried out before and after neutron irradiation up to 2.5 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ n$_{eq}$/cm$^{2}$ . Boron-doped sensors produced in epitaxial and Si-on-Si wafers have been studied. The results include their electrically characterization (IV and bias voltage stability) and performance studies (charge and time resolution) for single pad devices with a Sr-90 radioactive source set-up. The behaviour of the Inter-Pad region for irradiated 2 $\times$ 2 LGAD arrays, using the Transient Current Technique (TCT), is shown. The results indicate that the Si-on-Si devices with higher resistivity perform better than the epitaxial ones.

In recent decades, three major volcanic eruptions of different intensity have occurred (Mount Agung in 1963, El Chichón in 1982 and Mount Pinatubo in 1991), with reported climate impacts on seasonal to decadal timescales that could have been potentially predicted with accurate and timely estimates of the associated stratospheric aerosol loads. The Decadal Climate Prediction Project component C (DCPP-C) includes a protocol to investigate the impact of volcanic aerosols on the climate experienced during the years that followed those eruptions through the use of decadal predictions. The interest of conducting this exercise with climate predictions is that, thanks to the initialisation, they start from the observed climate conditions at the time of the eruptions, which helps to disentangle the climatic changes due to the initial conditions and internal variability from the volcanic forcing. The protocol consists of repeating the retrospective predictions that are initialised just before the last three major volcanic eruptions but without the inclusion of their volcanic forcing, which are then compared with the baseline predictions to disentangle the simulated volcanic effects upon climate. We present the results from six Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) decadal prediction systems. These systems show strong agreement in predicting the well-known post-volcanic radiative effects following the three eruptions, which induce a long-lasting cooling in the ocean. Furthermore, the multi-model multi-eruption composite is consistent with previous work reporting an acceleration of the Northern Hemisphere polar vortex and the development of El Niño conditions the first year after the eruption, followed by a strengthening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation the subsequent years. Our analysis reveals that all these dynamical responses are both model- and eruption-dependent. A novel aspect of this study is that we also assess whether the volcanic forcing improves the realism of the predictions. Comparing the predicted surface temperature anomalies in the two sets of hindcasts (with and without volcanic forcing) with observations we show that, overall, including the volcanic forcing results in better predictions. The volcanic forcing is found to be particularly relevant for reproducing the observed sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the North Atlantic Ocean following the 1991 eruption of Pinatubo.

The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) is one of the biggest international efforts aimed at better understanding the past, present, and future of climate changes in a multi-model context. A total of 21 model intercomparison projects (MIPs) were endorsed in its sixth phase (CMIP6), which included 190 different experiments that were used to simulate 40 000 years and produced around 40 PB of data in total. This paper presents the main findings obtained from the CPMIP (the Computational Performance Model Intercomparison Project), a collection of a common set of metrics, specifically designed for assessing climate model performance. These metrics were exclusively collected from the production runs of experiments used in CMIP6 and primarily from institutions within the IS-ENES3 consortium. The document presents the full set of CPMIP metrics per institution and experiment, including a detailed analysis and discussion of each of the measurements. During the analysis, we found a positive correlation between the core hours needed, the complexity of the models, and the resolution used. Likewise, we show that between 5 %–15 % of the execution cost is spent in the coupling between independent components, and it only gets worse by increasing the number of resources. From the data, it is clear that queue times have a great impact on the actual speed achieved and have a huge variability across different institutions, ranging from none to up to 78 % execution overhead. Furthermore, our evaluation shows that the estimated carbon footprint of running such big simulations within the IS-ENES3 consortium is 1692 t of CO2 equivalent. As a result of the collection, we contribute to the creation of a comprehensive database for future community reference, establishing a benchmark for evaluation and facilitating the multi-model, multi-platform comparisons crucial for understanding climate modelling performance. Given the diverse range of applications, configurations, and hardware utilised, further work is required for the standardisation and formulation of general rules. The paper concludes with recommendations for future exercises aimed at addressing the encountered challenges which will facilitate more collections of a similar nature.

Silicon sensors are the go-to technology for high-precision sensors in particle physics. But only recently low-noise silicon sensors with internal amplification became available. The so-called Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) sensors have been developed for applications in High Energy Physics, but lack two characteristics needed for the measurement of low-energy protons (<60 keV): a thin entrance window (in the order of tens of nm) and the efficient amplification of signals created near the sensor's surface (in a depth below 1 um). In this paper we present the so-called proton Low Gain Avalanche Detector (pLGAD) sensor concept and some results from characterization of the first prototypes of the sensor. The pLGAD is specifically designed to detect low-energy protons, and other low-penetrating particles. It will have a higher detection efficiency than non-silicon technologies, and promises to be a lot cheaper and easier to operate than competing silicon technologies., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figuures, VCI 2022

Climate services are essential to support climate-sensitive decision making, enabling adaptation to climate change and variability, and mitigate the sources of anthropogenic climate change, while taking into account the values and contexts of those involved. The unregulated nature of climate services can lead to low market performance and lack of quality assurance. Best practices, guidance, and standards serve as a form of governance, ensuring quality, legitimacy, and relevance of climate services. The Climateurope2 project (www.climateurope2.eu) addresses this gap by engaging and supporting an equitable and diverse community of climate services to provide recommendations for their standardisation. Four components of climate services are identified (the decision context, the ecosystem of actors and co-production processes, the multiple knowledge systems involved, and the delivery and evaluation of these services) to facilitate analysis. This has resulted in the identification of nine key messages summarising the susceptibility for the climate services standardisation. The recommendations are shared with relevant standardisation bodies and actors as well as with climate services stakeholders and providers.

IntroductionCardiac rehabilitation programs face the challenge of suboptimal participation, despite being a level Ia recommendation. Cardiac telerehabilitation, with its potential to engage patients who might otherwise not show interest, necessitates the adaption of existing center-based cardiac rehabilitation programs to facilitate rehabilitation at home. REHAB + is a mobile cardiac telerehabilitation program cocreated with patients and rehabilitation centers, aiming to future-proof cardiac rehabilitation and improve accessibility. The REHAB + application enables users to remotely communicate with their coach, receive on-demand feedback on health goal progression, and reduces the need for frequent in-person meetings at the cardiac rehabilitation center. The REHAB + study seeks to compare patient-related outcomes and characteristics of patients between those offered the option to participate in cardiac telerehabilitation and those attending center-based cardiac rehabilitation over a twelve-month period.MethodsThe REHAB + study is a multicenter, prospective, matched controlled, observational study that includes (N)STEMI patients eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. We aim to enroll 300 participants for cardiac telerehabilitation and 600 for center-based cardiac rehabilitation. Participants opting for cardiac telerehabilitation (REHAB+) will be matched with center-based cardiac rehabilitation participants. Additionally, characteristics of patients unwilling to participate in either center-based rehabilitation or telerehabilitation but are willing to share their demographics will be collected. The primary endpoint is quality of life measured with the SF-36 questionnaire at three and twelve months, with patient-related characteristics driving intervention choice as the most important secondary endpoint. Secondary endpoints include physical activity, modifiable risk factors, and digital health experience. The trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov with registration number NCT05207072.DiscussionThe REHAB + trial is unique by offering patients freedom to choose between cardiac telerehabilitation and center-based rehabilitation. The integration of digital components into cardiac rehabilitation has the potential to complement behavioral change strategies for specific patient groups. Offering patients the option of cardiac telerehabilitation next to center-based rehabilitation could enhance overall cardiac rehabilitation participation rates.

Summary: Background: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination has off-target (non-specific) effects that are associated with protection against unrelated infections and decreased all-cause mortality in infants. We aimed to determine whether BCG vaccination prevents febrile and respiratory infections in adults. Methods: This randomised controlled phase 3 trial was done in 36 healthcare centres in Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Healthcare workers were randomised to receive BCG-Denmark (single 0.1 ml intradermal injection) or no BCG in a 1:1 ratio using a web-based procedure, stratified by stage, site, age, and presence of co-morbidity. The difference in occurrence of febrile or respiratory illness were measured over 12 months (prespecified secondary outcome) using the intention-to-treat (ITT) population. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04327206. Findings: Between March 30, 2020, and April 1, 2021, 6828 healthcare workers were randomised to BCG-Denmark (n = 3417) or control (n = 3411; no intervention or placebo) groups. The 12-month adjusted estimated risk of ≥1 episode of febrile or respiratory illness was 66.8% in the BCG group (95% CI 65.3%–68.2%), compared with 63.4% in the control group (95% CI 61.8%–65.0%), a difference of +3.4 percentage points (95% CI +1.3% to +5.5%; p 0.002). The adjusted estimated risk of a severe episode (defined as being incapacitated for ≥3 consecutive days or hospitalised) was 19.4% in the BCG group (95% CI 18.0%–20.7%), compared with 18.8% in the control group (95% CI 17.4%–20.2%) a difference of +0.6 percentage points (95% CI −1.3% to +2.5%; p 0.6). Both groups had a similar number of episodes of illness, pneumonia, and hospitalisation. There were three deaths, all in the control group. There were no safety concerns following BCG vaccination. Interpretation: In contrast to the beneficial off-target effects reported following neonatal BCG in infants, a small increased risk of symptomatic febrile or respiratory illness was observed in the 12 months following BCG vaccination in adults. There was no evidence of a difference in the risk of severe disease. This manuscript presents a paired dataset with experimental holograms and their corresponding reconstructed phase maps of human red blood cells (RBCs). The holographic images were recorded using an off-axis telecentric Digital Holographic Microscope (DHM). The imaging system consists of a 40 × /0.65NA infinity-corrected microscope objective (MO) lens and a tube lens (TL) with a focal distance of 200 mm, recording diffraction-limited holograms. A CMOS camera with dimensions of 1920 × 1200 pixels and a pixel pitch of 5.86 µm was located at the back focal plane of the TL lens, capturing image-plane holograms. The off-axis, telecentric, and diffraction-limited DHM system guarantees accurate quantitative phase maps. Initially comprising 300 holograms, the dataset was augmented to 36,864 instances, enabling the investigation (i.e., training and testing) of learning-based models to reconstruct aberration-free phase images from raw holograms. This dataset facilitates the training and testing of end-to-end models for quantitative phase imaging using DHM systems operating at the telecentric regime and non-telecentric DHM systems where the spherical wavefront has been compensated physically. In other words, this dataset holds promise for advancing investigations in digital holographic microscopy and computational imaging.

Remote sensing satellites allow large-scale and fast detections of forest loss. Operational forest loss detection systems have been mainly developed over tropical forests; however, it is increasingly important to have access to accurate and up-to-date information on temperate forests. In this article, we adapted a Sentinel-1-based near real-time tropical forest loss detection method, based on the radar change ratio, to detect French temperate forests clear-cuts. Using ancillary data, annual and submonthly clear-cuts were assessed for broadleaf and conifer forests, for various tree species, over public and private forests. Using 967 validation plots, the maps exhibited recall and precision of 80.9% and 99.4%, respectively. The clear-cuts area shows remarkable stability over time from 2020. We found seven times more clear-cuts in private forests than in public forests, although the surface area of private forests is only three times that of public forests. It was also demonstrated that only 1.6% out of 4 530 dieback reference plots, and 6.2% of maps of forest bark beetle attacks, were confused with clear-cuts before clear-cuts actually occurred, which makes our maps complementary with forest dieback maps. Collectively, the findings of this study could have significant implications for the implementation of a radar-satellite-based system designed for the real-time detection of large-scale clear-cuts in European temperate forests.

Abstract Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

25. Impact of Atlantic multidecadal variability on rainfall intensity distribution and timing of the West African monsoon

Previous studies agree on an impact of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) on the total seasonal rainfall amounts over the Sahel. However, whether and how the AMV affects the distribution of rainfall or the timing of the West African monsoon is not well known. Here we seek to explore these impacts by analyzing daily rainfall outputs from climate model simulations with an idealized AMV forcing imposed in the North Atlantic, which is representative of the observed one. The setup follows a protocol largely consistent with the one proposed by the Component C of the Decadal Climate Prediction Project (DCPP-C). We start by evaluating model's performance in simulating precipitation, showing that models underestimate it over the Sahel, where the mean intensity is consistently smaller than observations. Conversely, models overestimate precipitation over the Guinea coast, where too many rainy days are simulated. In addition, most models underestimate the average length of the rainy season over the Sahel; some are due to a monsoon onset that is too late and others due to a cessation that is too early. In response to a persistent positive AMV pattern, models show an enhancement in total summer rainfall over continental West Africa, including the Sahel. Under a positive AMV phase, the number of wet days and the intensity of daily rainfall events are also enhanced over the Sahel. The former explains most of the changes in seasonal rainfall in the northern fringe, while the latter is more relevant in the southern region, where higher rainfall anomalies occur. This dominance is connected to the changes in the number of days per type of event; the frequency of both moderate and heavy events increases over the Sahel's northern fringe. Conversely, over the southern limit, it is mostly the frequency of heavy events which is enhanced, thus affecting the mean rainfall intensity there. Extreme rainfall events are also enhanced over the whole Sahel in response to a positive phase of the AMV. Over the Sahel, models with stronger negative biases in rainfall amounts compared to observations show weaker changes in response to AMV, suggesting that systematic biases could affect the simulated responses. The monsoon onset over the Sahel shows no clear response to AMV, while the demise tends to be delayed, and the overall length of the monsoon season enhanced between 2 and 5 d with the positive AMV pattern. The effect of AMV on the seasonality of the monsoon is more consistent to the west of 10∘ W, with all models showing a statistically significant earlier onset, later demise, and enhanced monsoon season with the positive phase of the AMV. Our results suggest a potential for the decadal prediction of changes in the intraseasonal characteristics of rainfall over the Sahel, including the occurrence of extreme events.

LGAD technology is established within the field of particle physics, as the baseline technology for the timing detectors of both the ATLAS and CMS upgrades at the HL-LHC. Pixelated LGADs have been proposed for the High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) and for the Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) of the ATLAS and CMS experiments, respectively. The drawback of segmenting an LGAD is the non-gain area between pixels and the consequent reduction in the fill factor. In this sense, inverse LGAD (iLGAD) technology has been proposed by IMB-CNM to enhance the fill factor and to reach excellent tracking capabilities. In this work, we explore the use of iLGAD sensors for X-Ray applications by developing a new generation of iLGADs. The periphery of the first iLGAD generation is optimized by means of TCAD tools, making them suitable for X-Ray irradiations thanks to the double side optimization. The fabricated iLGAD sensors exhibit good electrical performances before and after an X-Ray irradiation. The second iLGAD generation is able to withstand the same voltage, as contrary to the first iLGAD generation after irradiation.

With growing amounts of wind and solar power in the electricity mix of many European countries, understanding and predicting variations of renewable energy generation at multiple timescales is crucial to ensure reliable electricity systems. At seasonal scale, the balance between supply and demand is mostly determined by the large-scale atmospheric circulation, which is uncertain due to climate change and natural variability. Here we employ four teleconnection indices, which represent a linkage between atmospheric conditions at widely separated regions, to describe the large-scale circulation at seasonal scale over Europe. For the first time, we relate each of the teleconnections to the wind and solar generation anomalies at country and regional level and we show that dynamical forecasts of the teleconnection indices allow predicting renewable generation at country level with positive skill levels. This model unveils the co-variability of wind and solar generation in European countries through its common dependence on the general circulation and the state of the teleconnections., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

The growing deforestation of tropical forests requires the implementation of restoration actions capable of assisting the recovery of biodiversity and the functioning of these ecosystems. This research aimed to identify the environmental factors that influence the abundance and diversity of woody plant recruitment in an Andean forest restoration project in Medellin (Colombia). Data from woody plant individuals taller than 80 cm were collected in 22 plots of 200·m−2. The environmental factors selected were edaphic variables, plantation structure, slope, elevation, prior land use, and landscape forest cover. Generalized linear models (GLM) were used to analyze recruitment densit and Linear Mixed Models (LMM) to assess recruited species richness, diversity, and dominance. Woody plant recruitment attributes in our study area were similar to those of secondary succession in an Andean forest, but planted trees contributed little to recruitment density and diversity. While recruitment density was affected by slope, canopy closure, and landscape forest cover, recruitment diversity was influenced by physical (bulk density) and chemical (pH, aluminum, Cation Exchange Capacity) edaphic factors, planted tree diversity (species richness and composition), canopy closure, and the mortality rate of planted trees. We conclude that sites with lower mortality rates of planted trees and denser canopies enhance both recruitment density and diversity, indicating a synergy between active restoration and passive regeneration processes.

BackgroundChildhood obesity is a significant public health problem representing the most severe challenge in the world. Antibiotic exposure in early life has been identified as a potential factor that can disrupt the development of the gut microbiome, which may have implications for obesity. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the risk of developing obesity among children exposed to antibiotics early in life. MethodsAn Italian retrospective pediatric population-based cohort study of children born between 2004 and 2018 was adopted using the Pedianet database. Children were required to be born at term, with normal weight, and without genetic diseases or congenital anomalies. We assessed the timing of the first antibiotic prescription from birth to 6, 12, and 24 months of life and the dose-response relationship via the number of antibiotic prescriptions recorded in the first year of life (none, 1, 2, and ≥3 prescriptions). Obesity was defined as a BMI z score >3 for children aged ≤5 years and >2 for children aged >5 years, using the World Health Organization growth references. The obese incidence rate (IR) × 100 person-years and the relative 95% CI were computed using infant sex, area of residence, preschool and school age, and area deprivation index, which are the covariates of interest. A mixed-effect Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the hazard ratio and 95% CI for the association between antibiotic exposure in early life and child obesity between 24 months and 14 years of age, considering the family pediatricians as a random factor. Several subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness of our results. ResultsAmong 121,540 children identified, 54,698 were prescribed at least an antibiotic within the first year of life and 26,990 were classified as obese during follow-up with an incidence rate of 4.05 cases (95% CI 4.01-4.10) × 100 person-year. The risk of obesity remained consistent across different timings of antibiotic prescriptions at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years (fully adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.07, 95% CI 1.04-1.10; aHR 1.06, 95% CI 1.03-1.09; and aHR 1.07, 95% CI 1.04-1.10, respectively). This study explores the adoption of cryptocurrency, specifically Bitcoin, in the Philippines. The authors argue that current behavioral prediction models, such as TRA, TPB, and TAM, do not adequately account for the affective constructs of decision-making when high monetary stakes are involved. To address this gap, the authors propose an integrative model that accounts for financial decision-making processes, risk constructs, and population-specific behavioral strategies. The study used a quantitative-based research design and involved 684 university students from one of the major state universities in the Philippines. The findings show that perceived usefulness, attitude toward cryptocurrency, self-efficacy, and descriptive norms significantly influenced the intention to adopt cryptocurrency. Overall, the study confirms the direct influence of instrumental attitude, knowledge of cryptocurrency, descriptive norm, risk tolerance, ease and difficulty, and control on an individual’s intention to use cryptocurrency. The study contributes to exploring a less studied Philippine consumer base and provides empirical findings and insights into Bitcoin adoption in developing Asian economies. JEL Classification: G15. Summary: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the rapid development and deployment of several highly effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Recent studies suggest that these vaccines may also have off-target effects on the immune system. We sought to determine and compare the off-target effects of the adenovirus vector ChAdOx1-S (Oxford-AstraZeneca) and modified mRNA BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccines on immune responses to unrelated pathogens. Methods: Prospective sub-study within the BRACE trial. Blood samples were collected from 284 healthcare workers before and 28 days after ChAdOx1-S or BNT162b2 vaccination. SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies were measured using ELISA, and whole blood cytokine responses to specific (SARS-CoV-2) and unrelated pathogen stimulation were measured by multiplex bead array. Findings: Both vaccines induced robust SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody and cytokine responses. ChAdOx1-S vaccination increased cytokine responses to heat-killed (HK) Candida albicans and HK Staphylococcus aureus and decreased cytokine responses to HK Escherichia coli and BCG. BNT162b2 vaccination decreased cytokine response to HK E. coli and had variable effects on cytokine responses to BCG and resiquimod (R848). After the second vaccine dose, BNT162b2 recipients had greater specific and off-target cytokine responses than ChAdOx1-S recipients. Interpretation: ChAdOx1-S and BNT162b2 vaccines alter cytokine responses to unrelated pathogens, indicative of potential off-target effects. The specific and off-target effects of these vaccines differ in their magnitude and breadth. The clinical relevance of these findings is uncertain and needs further study. Under the pressing warming of climate, interpretable and useful-for-adaptation information has become a need in society and has promoted rapid methodological advances in climate science. One such advance is the development of the dynamical-storyline approach, with which the spread in multi-model scenario projections can be represented as a set of physically plausible scenarios (storylines) defined by (a) a global warming level and (b) changes in large-scale dynamical conditions that arise from climate forcing. Moreover, if changes in regional climate are assessed in such a way that they can clearly inform societal systems or management of natural ecosystems, they can potentially aid decision-making in a practical manner. Such is the aim of the climatic impact-driver (CID) framework, proposed in the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Here, we combine the dynamical-storyline approach with the CID framework and apply them to climate services. We focus on CIDs associated with the viticulture sector and the region of the South American Andes, where currently both Argentina and Chile produce wine. We explain the benefits of this approach from a communication and adaptation perspective. In particular, we found that the CIDs related to seasonally aggregated temperatures are mainly dependent on the global warming level although in some regions, but they can also be sensitive to changes in dynamical conditions. Meanwhile, CIDs related to extreme temperature values and precipitation depend strongly on the dynamical response. We show how adaptation to climate-related compound risks can be informed by a storyline approach, given that they can address compound uncertainty in multiple locations, variables and seasons.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) comprise a heterogeneous group of tumors with growing incidence. Recent molecular analyses provided a precise picture of their genomic and epigenomic landscape. Splicing dysregulation is increasingly regarded as a novel cancer hallmark influencing key tumor features. We have previously demonstrated that splicing machinery is markedly dysregulated in PanNETs. Here, we aimed to elucidate the molecular and functional implications of CUGBP ELAV-like family member 4 (CELF4), one of the most altered splicing factors in PanNETs. CELF4 expression was determined in 20 PanNETs, comparing tumor and non-tumoral adjacent tissue. An RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) dataset was analyzed to explore CELF4-linked interrelations among clinical features, gene expression, and splicing events. Two PanNET cell lines were employed to assess CELF4 function in vitro and in vivo. PanNETs display markedly upregulated CELF4 expression, which is closely associated with malignancy features, altered expression of key tumor players, and distinct splicing event profiles. Modulation of CELF4 influenced proliferation in vitro and reduced in vivo xenograft tumor growth. Interestingly, functional assays and RNA-seq analysis revealed that CELF4 silencing altered mTOR signaling pathway, enhancing the effect of everolimus. We demonstrate that CELF4 is dysregulated in PanNETs, where it influences tumor development and aggressiveness, likely by modulating the mTOR pathway, suggesting its potential as therapeutic target.
