Background: Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASI) are associated with significant morbidity. Data regarding induction of labor (IOL) and risk of OASI is conflicting. The objective of this study is to evaluate if IOL increases the odds of OASI when compared to spontaneous labor. Methods: This is a retrospective case–control study in women with term, singleton pregnancies, who had a vaginal delivery at a single, academic center in an urban setting from October 2015 to December 2021. Individuals with the primary outcome, OASI, were identified and matched with controls (no OASI) by delivery date. Results: 303 OASI individuals were identified and matched with 1106 controls. Women with OASI were more likely to be White or Asian, have commercial insurance, and have a previous cesarean delivery (CD). IOL increased the likelihood of OASI by 49% compared to spontaneous labor (OR 1.49, 95% CI [1.138, 1.949]). IOL was no longer significant when adjusting for confounding variables and known risk factors. Conclusion: IOL was not associated with OASI when accounting for known antepartum and intrapartum risk factors. Further investigation of modifiable and non-modifiable risks during labor is imperative to decrease the risk of OASI and associated pelvic floor disorders.

In severe cases, it may also be associated with orbital inflammation and cavernous sinus thrombosis.Purpose: This case demonstrates a rare and life-threatening post-operative complication of cataract surgery. We also hope to highlight the importance of considering the relevant risk factors associated with developing potential infections after cataract surgery, including the use of corneal sutures, high-risk behaviours such as excessive eye-rubbing, and non-compliance with appointments and post-operative medications.Case Report: We report the case of a 35-year-old female with severe autism and developmental delay who developed panophthalmitis, orbital inflammation and cavernous sinus thrombosis 6 weeks post cataract surgery. The likely cause was corneal suture-related microbial keratitis, and the patient required enucleation due to sepsis.Conclusion: Post-surgical panophalmitis is a rapidly progressive disease that is not only sight- but life-threatening and demands urgent and intensive treatment. A summary of the technical advances that are incorporated in the fourth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program is provided, covering approximately the last seven years. These include developments in density functional theory methods and algorithms, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) property evaluation, coupled cluster and perturbation theories, methods for electronically excited and open-shell species, tools for treating extended environments, algorithms for walking on potential surfaces, analysis tools, energy and electron transfer modelling, parallel computing capabilities, and graphical user interfaces. In addition, a selection of example case studies that illustrate these capabilities is given. These include extensive benchmarks of the comparative accuracy of modern density functionals for bonded and non-bonded interactions, tests of attenuated second order Møller-Plesset (MP2) methods for intermolecular interactions, a variety of parallel performance benchmarks, and tests of the accuracy of implicit solvation models. Some specific chemical examples include calculations on the strongly correlated Cr2 dimer, exploring zeolite-catalysed ethane dehydrogenation, energy decomposition analysis of a charged ter-molecular complex arising from glycerol photoionisation, and natural transition orbitals for a Frenkel exciton state in a nine-unit model of a self-assembling nanotube.

Many refugee women emigrate from countries with high cervical cancer incidence rates and have low rates of cervical cancer screening both before and after resettlement. Refugee women face many barriers to cervical cancer screening, including limited knowledge of cervical cancer and screening recommendations and cultural and linguistic barriers to being screened. Our pilot study aimed to develop and evaluate educational videos to promote cervical cancer screening among Karen-Burmese and Nepali-Bhutanese refugees, two of the largest groups of refugees arriving to the United States in recent years. We developed culturally tailored narrative videos for each ethnic group. Karen-Burmese and Nepali-Bhutanese women (N = 40) were recruited through community health educators to participate in a pre- and posttest study. We assessed changes in cervical cancer knowledge and intentions to be screened, and satisfaction with the videos. We found that women were significantly more likely to report having heard of a test for cervical cancer and indicated significantly greater intentions to be screened after watching the video. Their knowledge about cervical cancer and screening also improved significantly, and they reported high levels of acceptability with the video. Our results suggest that culturally tailored narrative educational videos were acceptable to the target audiences and may be effective in increasing cervical cancer screening among refugee women. Further research should assess how health care and social service providers could implement video-based interventions to encourage women to be screened for cervical cancer during early resettlement.

Cervical cancer incidence rates vary substantially among racial/ethnic groups in the United States (US) with women of Southeast Asian descent having the highest rates. Up to 70 % of cervical cancers could be prevented by widespread use of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. However, there is a lack of information about HPV vaccine uptake among Southeast Asian girls in the US. We conducted a telephone survey of Cambodian women with daughters who were age-eligible for HPV vaccination. Survey items addressed HPV vaccination barriers, facilitators and uptake. Our study group included 86 Cambodian mothers who lived in the Seattle metropolitan area. The proportions of survey participants who reported their daughter had initiated and completed the HPV vaccine series were only 29 and 14 %, respectively. Higher levels of vaccine uptake were significantly associated with mothers having heard about the HPV vaccine from a health professional and having received a recent Pap test. Commonly cited barriers to HPV vaccination included lack of knowledge about the HPV vaccine, not having received a physician recommendation for HPV vaccination and thinking the HPV vaccine is unnecessary in the absence of health problems. Linguistically and culturally appropriate HPV educational programs should be developed and implemented in Cambodian American communities. These programs should aim to enhance understanding of disease prevention measures, increase knowledge about the HPV vaccine and empower women to ask their daughter's doctors for HPV vaccination.

Targeted inhibition of Hedgehog signaling at the cell membrane has been associated with anticancer activity in preclinical and early clinical studies. Hedgehog signaling involves activation of Gli transcription factors that can also be induced by alternative pathways. In this study, we identified an interaction between Gli proteins and a transcription coactivator TBP-associated factor 9 (TAF9), and validated its functional relevance in regulating Gli transactivation. We also describe a novel, synthetic small molecule, FN1-8, that efficiently interferes with Gli/TAF9 interaction and downregulate Gli/TAF9-dependent transcriptional activity. More importantly, FN1-8 suppresses cancer cell proliferation in vitro and inhibits tumor growth in vivo. Our results suggest that blocking Gli transactivation, an important control point of multiple oncogenic pathways, may be an effective anticancer strategy.
