Herein, we investigate the symmetry-protected toroidal dipole resonances and conditions of their excitation in a new type of electromagnetic metamaterials. These metamaterials are all-dielectric planar periodic arrays of dielectric disks disposed on a dielectric substrate. The elementary building blocks of the array are trimers which are distributed in hexagonal unit supercells. The highest geometrical symmetry of the unit supercell is C6v. The analysis is fulfilled by using the representation theory of groups with the application of the magnetic group theory, which is a new approach in solving such problems. We have shown that to get access to the toroidal supermodes of the array, the unit supercell symmetry must be broken twice: firstly, the C3v symmetry of the trimer, and secondly, the C6v symmetry of the unit supercell needs to be reduced. Selection rules for the symmetric and antisymmetric orders of the toroidal dipole moments in the arrays are defined. In particular, we have shown that with the reduction of the unit supercell symmetry to the C2v group, the array exhibits the toroidal dipole resonance with an antitoroidic order. The arrays with the lower Cs symmetry can provide the resonances with both toroidic and antitoroidic orders. It is also shown that these arrays are always polarization sensitive. Full-wave simulations and experiments confirm the theoretical predictions. Herein, we discuss the conditions for excitation of symmetry-protected toroidal dipole modes in all-dielectric metasurfaces composed of trimer or twin-trimer clusters of dielectric disks. Such metasurfaces permit enhanced light-matter interaction due to spatially confined light in resonant systems with a high-quality factor. To describe characteristics of toroidal modes existing in the clusters, we use the magnetic dipole moments approximation, group-theoretical methods, group representation theory, symmetry-adapted linear combination method, and circuit theory. To validate the obtained theoretical results, we fulfill both full-wave numerical simulations and microwave experiments. In particular, we have shown that the toroidal dipole mode appears as a quasi-dark state of the trimer. It can be excited in the metasurface by the field of a linearly polarized wave, providing the symmetry of the trimer is properly reduced. In the metasurface, the properties of the toroidal dipole mode are determined primarily by the parameters of a single trimer and are not a consequence of the periodicity of the array. The coupling of the toroidal dipole modes in the twin-trimers can appear in both bonding and anti-bonding fashion resulting in different orders of the net toroidal dipole moment. Group theory is used in many textbooks of contemporary physics. However, electromagnetic community often considers group theory as an "exotic" tool. Graduate and postgraduate textbooks on electromagnetics and electrodynamics usually do not contain a description of properties of electromagnetic fields and waves on the basis of group theory. We discuss in this paper from the didactic point of view, several types of symmetry and the corresponding groups and representations. The benefits of the use of group theoretical methods are a more deep physical understanding of the electromagnetic phenomena and a significant reduction of numerical calculations. We propose and analyze a multifunctional THz device which can operate as a tunable switch and a filter. The device consists of a circular graphene nanodisk coupled to two nanoribbons oriented at $90^\circ$ to each other. The graphene elements are placed on a dielectric substrate. The nanodisk is magnetized by a DC magnetic field normal to its plane. The physical principle of the device is based on the propagation of surface plasmon-polariton waves in the graphene nanoribbons and excitation of dipole modes in the nanodisk. Numerical simulations show that 0.61T DC magnetic field provides transmission (regime ON) at the frequency 5.33 THz with the bandwidth 12.7$\%$ and filtering with the Q-factor equals to 7.8. At the central frequency, the insertion loss is around -2 dB and the reflection coefficient is -43 dB. The regime OFF can be achieved by means of switching DC magnetic field to zero value or by switching chemical potential of the nanodisk to zero with the ON/OFF ratio better than 20 dB. A small central frequency tuning by chemical potential is possible with a fixed DC magnetic field.

Two graphene-based T-shaped multifunctional components for THz and Far-Infrared regions are proposed and analyzed. The first component can serve as a divider, a switch and a dynamically controllable filter. This T-junction presents a circular graphene resonator and three graphene waveguides with surface plasmon-polariton waves connected frontally to the resonator. The resonator can be adjusted to work with dipole, quadrupole or hexapole modes. The graphene elements are deposited on a $SiO_{2}$ (silica) and $Si$ (silicon) two-layer substrate. The dynamical control and switching of the component is provided by the electrostatic field which defines the graphene Fermi energy. Numerical simulations show that the first component in the division regime (which is also the regime ON) has the transmission coefficient -4.3 dB at the central frequency for every of the two output ports and the FWHM is 9.5$\%$. In the OFF regime, the isolation of the two output ports from the input one is about -30 dB. The second component is a T-junction without resonator which fulfils the function of the divider-switch in more than octave frequency band.

We propose a new graphene-based THz circulator. It consists of a circular graphene resonator and three graphene nanoribbon waveguides of W-geometry placed on a dilectric substrate. Surface plasmon-polariton waves propagate in the waveguides. The nanoribbon excites in the resonator dipole resonance. Nonreciprocity of the device is defined by nonsymmetry of the conductivity tensor of the magnetized graphene. The circulator with the central frequency 7.5 THz has the bandwidth 4.25\% for isolation -15 dB, insertion loss -2.5 dB. Applied DC magnetic field is 0.56T and Fermi energy of graphene $\epsilon_F=0.15$eV. The Fermi energy allows one to control dynamically the circulator responses.

Two types of novel graphene-based components, namely, filters and electro-optical switches in guided wave configuration are suggested and analysed. The filters differ from the known ones with collinear orientation of the input and output waveguides by geometry and symmetry. The components consist of a circular graphene disk and two nanoribbons oriented at $90^\circ$ to each other in the plane of the graphene layer. The graphene elements are placed on a dielectric substrate. We show that change in symmetry leads to a drastic change in the properties of the components. The physical principle of the devices is based on the dipole, quadrupole and hexapole resonances in the graphene disk which define stop-band, pass-band and stop-band frequency characteristics, respectively. A combination of stop-band and pass-band filter properties by shifing the electronic Fermi level allows one to design a switch. Numerical simulations show that the suggested components have very small dimensions, good characteristics and provide a dynamic control of their central frequency via electrostatic gating.

Artificial magnetism at optical frequencies can be realized in metamaterials composed of periodic arrays of subwavelength elements, also called "meta-atoms". Optically-induced magnetic moments can be arranged in both unstaggered structures, naturally associated with ferromagnetic (FM) order, or staggered structures, linked correspondingly to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Here we demonstrate that such magnetic dipole orders of the lattices of meta-atoms can appear in low-symmetry Mie-resonant metasurfaces where each asymmetric dielectric (non-magnetic) meta-atom supports a localized trapped mode. We reveal that these all-dielectric resonant metasurfaces possess not only strong optical magnetic response but also they demonstrate a significant polarization rotation of the propagating electromagnetic waves at both FM and AFM resonances. We confirm these findings experimentally by measuring directly the spectral characteristics of different modes excited in all-dielectric metasurfaces, and mapping near-field patterns of the electromagnetic fields at the microwave frequencies., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Metasurfaces have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to novel ways they provide for the efficient wavefront control and engineering of the resonant transmission. We discuss an approach allowing effectively control appearance of the sharp Fano resonances in metasurfaces associated with the {\it bound states in the continuum}. We demonstrate that by breaking the symmetry transversely, in the direction perpendicular to a metasurface with a complex unit cell, we can control the number, frequency, and type of high-$Q$ resonances originating from bound states in the continuum. An all-dielectric metasurface featuring resonant conditions of the trapped mode excitation is considered. It is composed of a lattice of subwavelength particles which are made of a high-refractive-index dielectric material structured in the form of disks. Each particle within the lattice behaves as an individual dielectric resonator supporting a set of electric and magnetic (Mie-type) modes. In order to access a trapped mode (which is the TE01 mode of the resonator), a round eccentric penetrating hole is made in the disk. In the lattice, the disks are arranged into clusters (unit super-cells) consisting of four particles. Different orientations of holes in the super-cell correspond to different symmetry groups producing different electromagnetic response of the overall metasurface when it is irradiated by the linearly polarized waves with normal incidence. We perform a systematic analysis of the electromagnetic response of the metasurface as well as conditions of the trapped mode excitation involving the group-theoretical description, representation theory and microwave circuit theory. Both polarization-sensitive and polarization-insensitive arrangements of particles and conditions for dynamic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order are derived. We reveal peculiarities of the trapped (dark) mode excitation in a polarization-insensitive all-dielectric metasurface, whose unit super-cell is constructed by particularly arranging four cylindrical dielectric particles. Involving group-theoretical description we discuss in detail the effect of different orientations of particles within the super-cell on characteristics of the trapped mode. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental investigations. Since the metasurface is realized from simple dielectric particles without the use of any metallic components, they are feasibly scalable to both micro- and nanometer-size structures, and they can be employed in flat-optics platforms for realizing efficient light-matter interaction for multiple hotspot light localization, optical sensing, and highly-efficient light trapping., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

A new type of the graphene-based three-port circulator is suggested and analysed. The cross-section of the component presents a three-layer structure consisting of a layer of silicon, of silica and of graphene. In-plane figure resembles a common microwave nanostrip circulator with a circular graphene resonator and three waveguides symmetrically connected to it. The graphene is magnetized normally to its plane by a DC magnetic field. The numerical simulation demonstrates the isolation of -15 dB and insertion losses of -2 dB in 6.98 \% frequency band with the central frequency 8.23THz., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report resonant features of novel controllable reflectarray which consists of meander-like graphene strips placed on a metal-backed dielectric substrate. The structure manifests two kinds of resonances appeared as sharp deeps of reflectivity. The first one exists because the strips of periodic cells of the structure have resonant sizes for induced surface plasmon-polaritons. The second kind of resonances is defined by excitation of TM eigenwaves of the whole structure as a plane photonic crystal.
