1. Fast-timing study of $^{81}$Ga from the $\beta$ decay of $^{81}$Zn

Abstract

The $\beta^{-}$ decay of $^{81}$Zn to the neutron magic $N=50$ nucleus $^{81}$Ga, with only three valence protons with respect to $^{78}$Ni, was investigated. The study was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN by means of $\gamma$ spectroscopy. The $^{81}$Zn half-life was determined to be $T_{1/2}=290(4)$ ms while the $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability was measured as $P_n=23(4)\%$. The analysis of the $\beta$-gated $\gamma$-ray singles and $\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidences from the decay of $^{81}$Zn provides 47 new levels and 70 new transitions in $^{81}$Ga. The $\beta^-$$n$ decay of $^{81}$Zn was observed and a new decay scheme into the odd-odd $^{80}$Ga nucleus was established. The half-lives of the first and second excited states of $^{81}$Ga were measured via the fast-timing method using LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors. The level scheme and transition rates are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. The low-lying structure of $^{81}$Ga is interpreted in terms of the coupling of the three valence protons outside the doubly-magic $^{78}$Ni core., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

The structure of the nucleus 25F was investigated through in-beam {\gamma}-ray spectroscopy of the fragmentation of 26Ne and 27,28Na ion beams. Based on the particle-{\gamma} and particle-{\gamma}{\gamma} coincidence data, a level scheme was constructed and compared with shell model and coupled-cluster calculations. Some of the observed states were interpreted as quasi single-particle states built on top of the closed-shell nucleus 24O, while the others were described as states arising from coupling of a single proton to the 2+ core excitation of 24O., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures and 1 table

Abstract

The structure of the $^{44}$S nucleus has been studied at GANIL through the one proton knock-out reaction from a $^{45}$Cl secondary beam at 42 A$\cdot$MeV. The $\gamma$ rays following the de-excitation of $^{44}$S were detected in flight using the 70 BaF${_2}$ detectors of the Ch\^{a}teau de Cristal array. An exhaustive $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence analysis allowed an unambiguous construction of the level scheme up to an excitation energy of 3301 keV. The existence of the spherical 2$^+_2$ state is confirmed and three new $\gamma$-ray transitions connecting the prolate deformed 2$^+_1$ level were observed. Comparison of the experimental results to shell model calculations further supports a prolate and spherical shape coexistence with a large mixing of states built on the ground state band in $^{44}$S., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

The structure of $^{44}$S has been studied using delayed $\gamma$ and electron spectroscopy at \textsc{ganil}. The decay rates of the 0$^+_2$ isomeric state to the 2$^+_1$ and 0$^+_1$ states have been measured for the first time, leading to a reduced transition probability B(E2~:~2$^{+}_1$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_2)$= 8.4(26)~e$^2$fm$^4$ and a monopole strength $\rho^2$(E0~:~0$^{+}_2$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_1)$ =~8.7(7)$\times$10$^{-3}$. Abstract

The energies of the excited states in very neutron-rich $^{42}$Si and $^{41,43}$P have been measured using in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy from the fragmentation of secondary beams of $^{42,44}$S at 39 A.MeV. The low 2$^+$ energy of $^{42}$Si, 770(19) keV, together with the level schemes of $^{41,43}$P provide evidence for the disappearance of the Z=14 and N=28 spherical shell closures, which is ascribed mainly to the action of proton-neutron tensor forces. Abstract

International audience; The structure of $^{80}$Ge has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A previous study reported for the first time a low-lying $0^+_2$ intruder state at 639 keV, based on the coincidence with a previously unobserved 1764-keV $γ$ ray, and suggested it as evidence for shape coexistence in $^{80}$Ge. We used the $\beta$ decay from the $3^-$ 22.4-keV state in $^{80}$Ga to enhance the population of low-spin states in $^{80}$Ge, including any excited $0^+$ level, and $\gamma \gamma$ coincidences to investigate it. We observed a 1764-keV $\gamma$ ray in coincidence with strong transitions in $^{80}$Ge, thus not feeding the proposed 639-keV $0^+_2$. No connecting transitions from previously known levels to the 639-keV and 2403-keV $2^+_3$ states could be established either. Shell-model calculations for Ge isotopes and $N=48$ isotones were performed. They succeed to explain most of the experimental levels, but fail to reproduce the presence of a $0^+_2$ state below $≈1200$ keV in $^{80}$Ge. Our experimental findings and shell-model calculations are difficult to reconcile with a very low-lying $0^+_2$ state in $^{80}$Ge.

Abstract

The structure of 80Ge has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A previous study reported for the first time a low-lying 0+2 intruder state at 639 keV, based on the coincidence with a previously unobserved 1764-keV γ ray, and suggested it as evidence for shape coexistence in 80Ge. We used the β decay from the 3− 22.4-keV state in 80Ga to enhance the population of low-spin states in 80Ge, including any excited 0+ level, and γγ coincidences to investigate it. We observed a 1764-keV γ ray in coincidence with strong transitions in 80Ge, thus not feeding the proposed 639-keV 0+2. No connecting transitions from previously known levels to the 639-keV and 2403-keV 2+3 states could be established either. Shell-model calculations for Ge isotopes and N=48 isotones were performed. They succeed to explain most of the experimental levels, but fail to reproduce the presence of a 0+2 state below ≈1200 keV in 80Ge. Our experimental findings and shell-model calculations are difficult to reconcile with a very low-lying 0+2 state in 80Ge.

Abstract

International audience; The existence of two close-lying nuclear states in $^{73}$Ga has recently been experimentally determined: a 1/2$^−$ spin-parity for the ground state was measured in a laser spectroscopy experiment, while a J$^{\pi} = 3/2^−$ level was observed in transfer reactions. This scenario is supported by Coulomb excitation studies, which set a limit for the energy splitting of 0.8 keV. In this work, we report on the study of the excited structure of $^{73}$Ga populated in the $\beta$ decay of $^{73}$Zn produced at ISOLDE, CERN. Using $\beta$-gated, $\gamma$-ray singles, and $\gamma - \gamma$ coincidences, we have searched for energy differences to try to delimit the ground-state energy splitting, providing a more stringent energy difference limit. Three new half-lives of excited states in $^{73}$Ga have been measured using the fast-timing method with LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors. From our study, we help clarify the excited structure of $^{73}$Ga and we extend the existing $^{73}$Zn decay to $^{73}$Ga with 8 new energy levels and 35 $\gamma$ transitions. We observe a 195-keV transition consistent with a $\gamma$ ray de-exciting a short-lived state in the $\beta$-decay parent $^{73}$Zn.

Abstract

International audience; The advanced time-delayed γγ(t) method has been applied to determine half-lives of low-lying states in the N=50 isotones Ru94 and Pd96. The inferred experimental E2 strengths for the 4+→2+ transitions in the two nuclei show a dramatic deviation with respect to the shell model predictions in the (f5/2,p,g9/2) proton hole space in Sn100. The anomalous behavior can be ascribed to a breakdown of the seniority quantum number in the πg9/2n configuration due to particle-hole excitations across the N=Z=50 shell as confirmed by large-scale shell model calculations.
