1. Irradiation dose affects the composition of organic refractory materials in space: Results from laboratory analogues

Abstract

Context. Near- and mid-infrared observations have revealed the presence of organic refractory materials in the solar system, in cometary nuclei and on the surface of centaurs, Kuiper-belt and trans-neptunian objects. In these astrophysical environments, organic materials can be formed because of the interaction of frozen volatile compounds with cosmic rays, stellar/solar particles, and favoured by thermal processing. The analysis of laboratory analogues of such materials gives information on their properties, complementary to observations. Aims. We present new experiments to contribute in the understanding of the chemical composition of organic refractory materials in space. Methods. We bombard frozen water, methanol and ammonia mixtures with 40 keV H$^+$ and we warm the by-products up to 300~K. The experiments allow the production of organic residues that we analyse by means of infrared spectroscopy and by Very High Resolution Mass Spectrometry to study their chemical composition and their high molecular diversity, including the presence of hexamethylenetetramine and its derivatives. Results. We find that the accumulated irradiation dose plays a role in determining the residue's composition. Conslusions. Based on the laboratory doses, we estimate the astrophysical timescales to be short enough to induce an efficient formation of organic refractory materials at the surface of icy bodies in the outer solar system., Comment: in publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics, sect. Abstract

Anhydrous pyroxene-rich interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) have been proposed as surface analogs for about two-thirds of all C-complex asteroids. However, this suggestion appears to be inconsistent with the presence of hydrated silicates on the surfaces of some of these asteroids including Ceres. Here we report the presence of enstatite (pyroxene) on the surface of two C-type asteroids (Ceres and Eugenia) based on their spectral properties in the mid-infrared range. The presence of this component is particularly unexpected in the case of Ceres because most thermal evolution models predict a surface consisting of hydrated compounds only. The most plausible scenario is that Ceres' surface has been partially contaminated by exogenous enstatite-rich material, possibly coming from the Beagle asteroid family. This scenario questions a similar origin for Ceres and the remaining C-types, and it possibly supports recent results obtained by the Dawn mission (NASA) that Ceres may have formed in the very outer solar system. Concerning the smaller C-types such as Eugenia, both their derived surface composition (enstatite and amorphous silicates) and low density suggest that these bodies accreted from the same building blocks, namely chondritic porous, pyroxene-rich IDPs and volatiles (mostly water ice), and that a significant volume fraction of these bodies has remained unaffected by hydrothermal activity likely implying a late accretion. In addition, their current heliocentric distance may best explain the presence or absence of water ice at their surfaces. Finally, we raise the possibility that CI chondrites, Tagish Lake-like material, or hydrated IDPs may be representative samples of the cores of these bodies.

6. The origin of GEMS in IDPs as deduced from microstructural evolution of amorphous silicates with annealing

Abstract

We present laboratory studies of the micro-structural evolution of an amorphous ferro-magnesian silicate, of olivine composition, following thermal annealing under vacuum. Annealing under vacuum was performed at temperatures ranging from 870 to 1020 K. After annealing spheroidal metallic nano-particles (2-50 nm) are found within the silicate films. We interpret this microstructure in terms of a reduction of the initial amorphous silicate FeO component, because of the carbon-rich partial pressure in the furnace due to pumping mechanism. Annealing in a controlled oxygen-rich atmosphere confirms this interpretation. The observed microstructures closely resemble those of the GEMS (Glass with Embedded Metal and Sulphides) found in chondritic IDPs (Interplanetary Dust Particles). Since IDPs contain abundant carbonaceous matter, a solid-state reduction reaction may have occurred during heating in the hot inner regions of the proto-solar disc. Related to this, the presence of forsterite grains grown from the amorphous precursor material clearly demonstrates that condensation from gaseous species is not required to explain the occurrence of forsterite around young protostars and in comets. Forsterite grains in these environments can be formed directly in the solid phase by thermal annealing of amorphous ferro-magnesian silicates under reducing conditions., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

International audience; Cosmic rays, solar ions and UV photons induce changes in both the structure and composition of frozen volatiles trapped in solar system small bodies such as comets, Kuiper-belt objects (KBOs) and trans-neptunian objects (TNOs). Recently, Stern et al. 2019 reported about the presence of methanol and water ice on the surface of (486958) 2014 MU69 revealed by the New Horizons space probe. Both species were identified also in other small bodies, such as (55638) 2002 VE95 and the centaur 5145 Pholus. Laboratory experiments that simulate the interaction between cosmic rays and frozen volatiles have shown that when carbon-bearing species are bombarded with keV-MeV ions, energetic processing determines the formation of both volatiles (such as CO, CO2, H2CO, etc.) and refractory species that may account for the visible and near-infrared reddening observed in various solar system small bodies. Here we present laboratory experiments performed to contribute in the interpretation of observations of methanol-rich bodies. Frozen samples containing water and methanol were deposited at temperatures that are close to those measured on 2014 MU69 and other TNOs. After the deposition, frozen volatiles were bombarded with 40 keV protons between a few and hundreds eV/molecule. Samples were analysed in the near-infrared range, where methanol exhibit an intense band at 2.27 microns and minor feature at 2.34 microns (4400 and 4280 cm-1, respectively). The analysis revealed a different sensitivity to ion irradiation of the two features. In particular, we show that the ratio between the band areas evolves with increasing irradiation doses. We suggest that it could be used as a probe to discern between pristine and processed ices, as well as to establish upper limits for the 2.34 microns band when only the 2.27 microns band is observed.

Abstract

Aluminium foils were used on Stardust to stabilize the aerogel specimens in the modular collector tray. Part of these foils were fully exposed to the flux of cometary grains emanating from Wild 2. Because the exposed part of these foils had to be harvested before extraction of the aerogel, numerous foil strips some 1.7 mm wide and 13 or 33 mm long were generated during Stardusts's Preliminary Examination (PE). These strips are readily accommodated in their entirety in the sample chambers of modern SEMs, thus providing the opportunity to characterize in situ the size distribution and residue composition - employing EDS methods - of statistically more significant numbers of cometary dust particles compared to aerogel, the latter mandating extensive sample preparation. We describe here the analysis of nearly 300 impact craters and their implications for Wild 2 dust.

Abstract

Meteorites have long been considered as reflections of the compositional diversity of main belt asteroids and consequently they have been used to decipher their origin, formation, and evolution. However, while some meteorites are known to sample the surfaces of metallic, rocky and hydrated asteroids (about one-third of the mass of the belt), the low-density icy asteroids (C-, P-, and D-types), representing the rest of the main belt, appear to be unsampled in our meteorite collections. Here we provide conclusive evidence that the surface compositions of these icy bodies are compatible with those of the most common extraterrestrial materials (by mass), namely anhydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDPs). Given that these particles are quite different from known meteorites, it follows that the composition of the asteroid belt consists largely of more friable material not well represented by the cohesive meteorites in our collections. In the light of our current understanding of the early dynamical evolution of the solar system, meteorites likely sample bodies formed in the inner region of the solar system (0.5–4 AU) whereas chondritic porous IDPs sample bodies that formed in the outer region (>5 AU).

Introduction: In December 2020, the Hayabusa2 reentry capsule returned 5.4 g of material from the asteroid Ryugu. A fraction of the collected material was then examined by Initial Analysis Teams. As a part of the Mineralogy / Petrology STONE team, we received ~30 small fragments to study the 3D heterogeneity and the assembly of the different phases. Material and methods: In this study, we will present the results of a muti-analytical sequence applied to nine micrometric Ryugu fragments (ranging from 30 to 80 µm in size), coming from 3 bigger millimetric grains (A0064, C0046, and C0002). These fragments were welded with platinum on metallic needles using FIB (Focus Ion Beam) microscopes in Saclay and Lille [1]. Then, we analyzed these fragments using an IR micro-tomography setup available at the SMIS beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron (France). Multiple configurations were used: analyses in transmission by Infrared Computed Tomography [2] (IR-CT) and analyses in reflectance by Infrared Surface Imaging [3] (IRSI). Regions of interest with peculiar spectral signatures were identified on the 3D volume and 3-µm thin-slices (~ 15 x 20 x 3 µm³) around these regions were extracted using FIB. They were finally analyzed in 2D with high-resolution IR imaging and SEM-EDX. Average composition: We will present the average IR spectra in the 2.5 - 12.5 µm range both in reflectance and transmission of the 9 small studied fragments. Several grains showed IR signatures at ~ 2.7 µm, 3.0-3.1 µm, 3.4 µm, and 3.9 µm, in a good agreement with the bands identified by NIRS3 or by MicrOmega in the JAXA curation facility [4,5], plus several mid-IR signatures of great interest, such as bands attributed to Si-O stretching in phyllosilicates, and C=O stretching in organics and carbonates. In general, the 2.7 µm feature observed in our data exhibits similar maximum position but is deeper to the one observed with NIRS3. However, we notice a variability of the composition between the 9 fragments, for instance in the intensity of the 2.7 and 3.4 µm features. Study of heterogeneity: The small fragment C0002-FO019, exhibits two regions with very different IR signatures. The difference in the position and the shape of the SiO feature could sign different lithologies affected by various degrees of aqueous alteration. In particular, some spectra show a shoulder at ~ 998 cm-1 which could be due to anhydrous silicate related to a less-altered lithology [6]. The origin of the variation of the 10 µm band (chemical composition, or structural diversity of the mineral) will be discussed. A correlation with the 2.7 µm band will also be presented. Complementary measurements performed with SEM-EDX to better constrain the mineralogy of the surface of the extracted thin-slices will be presented and we will discuss the structural diversity at the scale of ~100 nm.
